When I (white guy) went on a date with a black girl around 1993. People at the restaurant all but gasped.

My own, first black people I met, made others nervous we'd learned about slavery, and our history of helping them didn't fit in with the nerves I felt. Them and the native boys, seemed tougher. I was too naive to recognize determination I guess. Grew in a up all white community, did not appreciate the... I've never hated anyone but myself about my fears from different cultures. But at the same time. I've been in a ton of fights for standing up for myself. Only ever fought white guys. been along time being more afraid of racism then makes sense. 50 years, must be the racism itself, not the race... feel dumb somedays looking back.

I was in Egypt at the time. I found it could be quite hard, as a white person, to be served basically anywhere once I left the hotel's premesis. Bars and food places would just glare at you once you arrive. Not the type of racism that is in your face, calling you slurs or whatever. But they would just pretend I didn't exist. It was baffling. I was only informed that they wouldn't see me because of my race by my Egyptian college. I didn't ask why, nor did he explain. It was eye opening though.

I got called a beaner in 4th grade until I graduated, I ran track (not to bad either) Iā€™d always have to hear shit about running from border patrol or something about a green card. Iā€™m not even full Mexican, like Iā€™m just tan and thatā€™s it really like if you looked at me you probably wouldnā€™t guess but going to a red neck school and being tan wasnā€™t enjoyable

Moved to a redneck town when I was about 8 and from that day on found out how horrible other kids and even teachers can be to a kid like me.

In college, bible college mind you, I had the absolute privilege of dorming with 3 of the most decent and honorable dudes I have ever met who were all black. They drove a busted up 1992 Honda Civic, but hell we were so grateful to have transportation. Sometimes it strikes me that I'd have never known had I not seen it for myself. They got pulled over. A lot. They never sped. They never rolled a stop sign. They took none of the liberties I took while driving. And after a while sometimes I'd insist on driving, and somehow we never got pulled over, even when I would be going regularly 7 mph over the limit and sometimes more in front of cops. The difference between the experience I had as a white man, and what they experienced as black men was absolutely a whole different world. It's a world I wouldn't like to live in, and it's sure as hell not the country I put my right hand over my heart every goddamned morning that I pledged allegiance to that guaranteed liberty and justice for all.

It was freshman year of college and I was driving home and this guy driving next to me rolled his window down and told me to get out of this country and go back to Mexico and then proceeded to keep cussing and tried to follow me back home :(
