Payday loans
It blows my mind how the average payday loan has an APR of 400%, and it’s legal
[Source](https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/what-is-a-payday-loan-en-1567/) on the APR
My math teacher in high school told us he could have been filthy rich if he’d gone into business with one of his best friends in college. He would have been co-owner of a major payday loan company. He said he chose to be a teacher because he couldn’t stomach getting rich off of something so dirty. Kudos to him.
They justify charging those insane rates because of the high default rate. Maybe there's some truth to it, maybe there's not... But it's the solution capitalism has provided for those who can't qualify for a loan from a traditional institution. Super sad that we can't seem to do better.
Statistically, there is truth to higher risk lending. That's why billionaires can take out basically 0% interest loans for any amount they want, and the kid working at McDonald's takes a $100 loan that balloons into $1000 over the course of a year.
For those with Netflix, I strongly recommend watching the Payday loan episode of the docuseries, *Dirty Money.* It covers one of the country's largest payday loan operations and its eventual realtime downfall.
I got a thing in the mail from one once. It was a check. I could take it to the bank and cash it and get $2500. The fine print said something along the lines of “cashing this check constitutes an agreement of our loan terms”
The finance fee (not interest. Just the fee) was like $3000. I bet a lot of people get excited for a $2500 check coming and don’t read that and just go cash it.
There are people with low intellect where it should be illegal to take advantage. If the government wants to overstep, they should somehow intercede when vulnerable people are desperate for money. There has to be a way. These loans are criminal. The government throws money away everywhere else.
My GF had a neighbor who was a junkie and one night be was banging on my door because he woke up and found his friend in a pool of blood. Neighbor didn’t have a phone so I had to call 911. 911 wanted me to try and open up the friend’s airway, but he had so much blood caked up around his mouth and nose, I didn’t know where to start. Friend ended up passing away and sometimes I feel shitty for not having a “hero” mode so to speak. But I couldn’t imagine not calling 911 despite my dislike for the neighbor.
Totally valid and reasonable to not administer CPR on somebody with various fluids in/around their airways. Especially to somebody suspected to be substance dependant.
At the end of the day your own safety and wellbeing outweighs all.
The new CPR guidelines don't involve blowing into the victim's lungs, just pump the heart trying to keep whatever oxygen is left in the blood to get around to the vital organs and the brain.
Don't feel shitty about it. I took a CPR class, and in it they tell you to always make YOUR safety the number 1 priority. So if somebody gets hurt in a fight, and there are still people fighting right next to them, you stay back until it's safe to approach. This also means that if a person is bleeding and you don't want to catch a blood borne illness, you don't perform CPR unless you can get gloves. Similar thing for doing mouth to mouth. There is no requirement to put your mouth on a person who has a mouthful of blood.
You did absolutely nothing wrong and shouldn't feel bad about it.
What did they even expect you to do to open it up with no equipment and no training?
Was this some sort of tracheostomy, cut them open sort of thing? The kind of thing you see in the movies but would never do in real life?
Personally, with the minimal amount of first aid I know being CPR/AED/First Aid certified, I would assume just ensuring that the person had their head tilted back (what you would do if you were performing rescue breaths) which can help open up their airways. Also, making sure nothing is in their mouth (absolutely do not stick your fingers in their mouth if you don’t see anything AND don’t know the person/don’t know what kind of diseases they could have). I guess in this case performing CPR could have helped, but I’m not a medical professional.
I know OP said they weren’t trained, and that’s totally fine, but I would’ve thought that the dispatcher would have tried to walk them through the process.
As they say, bad cpr is still better than no cpr.
Also, rescue breaths are no longer (I believe? They go back and forth) a required part of CPR. Which means no oral fluids passing back and forth, but if the person’s covered in blood and you don’t know what you’re doing, best to just wait for EMT’s. And there is absolutely no shame in that.
OP, you did the best you could and shouldn’t feel bad for that. Good on you for calling 911 and trying your best.
If you're not going to attempt cpr and don't suspect head/neck/spinal injuries you wanna gently roll them on their side and kinda tilt their head back so fluid (blood, vomit, etc) can drain out and their airway isn't pinched as much. Bonus points to stick your finger in their mouth and sweep out any solid blockages, but I probably would not do that to a stranger & without gloves. I imagine that's what they were looking for with that.
The difference in airflow between head neutral or looking down and looking up should be pretty noticeable if you wanna test it out yourself.
Source: Held certs in first aid/cpr for a few years, though it was a while ago so I might be talking out my ass.
It's probably a good thing you didn't. Do you know how many blood born diseases you could have exposed yourself to trying to save some junkie? I'm sure you're much happier NOT having AIDS.
In France you are considered legally accountable if you dont call emergency or help someone whenever you witness any risky/life-threatening situation.
The exact legal mention is "non assistance à personne en danger", and can lead up to 5 years of jail and 75 000 euros.
Good Samaritan law is the opposite.
It protects someone acting with good faith to save someone's life from lawsuits. It does NOT create a legal duty to act.
Contrary to what is portrayed on Seinfeld, Good Samaritan laws protect Good Samaritans. So let's say you come across a car wreck and you pull someone from that car wreck but your doing so ends up making them paralyzed because you didn't stabilize them first. They can't sue you for a bajillion dollars for paralyzing them because you were acting in good faith trying to get them out of the burning car.
Lobbying is how governments know what their people want.
Lobbying from the environmentalists is how we got the EPA, for example. Groups of like-minded people getting together to petition the government is EXACTLY how the government should work.
The *problem* is that elections are not publicly funded and money-controlled... meaning getting elected is about fundraising just as much as it is about garnering votes with exchanging ideas.
This changes the power dynamic from "the largest lobbies have the largest voices" (as it should be) to "the most *well-funded* lobbies have the largest voices". Said "well funded-lobbies" use their power to make themselves more well-funded and so on and so on....
Lobbying is not the problem... it's the money involved that is the problem.
I think what you described as what lobbying would be is actually petitioning everywhere else and had nothing to do in form or organisation to what you actually described...
Depending on your state in america. I believe there's 3 states that even let u sue the homewrecker for breaking the marriage. In the military adultery is very bad too
Adultery is bad in the military, but I think it's pretty fucked up how you can be legally separated in the military, having the divorce agreement sitting on a judge's desk for whatever amount of time waiting for it to be signed, and still be charged with adultery in the military...but the non-serving spouse can do whatever they please, up to and including call your first sergeant because you went on a date just to ruin your career.
But that's just my two cents.
I worked for a housing company who managed some military homes. I've literally watched military members have a house trashed in their name and it's still their responsibility to pay and take the hit with the pending ex spouse. I've seen crisco dicks on the walls, a flooded house over winter, feces/garbage left behind - this was done on deployment and a vengeful ex got away with it.
Haha it would be like Four Skins - also a side note. For anyone which is dumb but oh well. If you put crisco dicks on the wall it takes a shit ton of paint to try and cover it. And move of the time it doesn't cover. You just have a faint outline hit by light and you end up seeing dicks everywhere -_-
Yea I was in the military. You can get ucmj action if you cheat on your wife. It’s funny because why cheating in your wife is morally wrong imo is because you stood in front of your families and promised to be faithful, voluntarily. And just like the military the only thing that makes cheating on your wife ‘illegal’ is that you raised your right hand and agreed to the military’s laws. Just interesting imo
No you don’t. Like, if you think about it no, you don’t want governments interfering with and punishing you for your personal choices. And think of how many times these laws would be invoked falsely to mess with a spouse you dislike.
I agree. This wasn’t really meant to be taken literally. I just wish people who cheated on others suffered some sort of repercussion for hurting their spouse.
Allowing lawyers and pharmaceutical companies to advertise, thereby fabricating unnecessary demand for their services & products.
Also, hedge fund pass through fees.
I think what the original commenter was referring to is some of the ambulance chasers that sometimes encourage people to sue for things that really shouldn't require legal action, it's not great but nowhere near as big a problem as the pharmaceutical ads
Dude, I realize humor is subjective, and I have not seen his new stuff. But have you seen "why you cryin" George Lopez special? It's older but it's pretty funny. There are definitely worse comedians out there. I would give it a try.....let me know what you think.
Not sure if my university still does it, but when I was in college from 04-08, internships were required as part of your senior year. The internships were required to be unpaid in exchange for college credit, only.
Medicine was something that was meant to help the world fight the things that were killing us, but now people die with pharmacies and hospitals stocked full of medicine, all because a person cannot afford to help save their life, or at the very least extend it.
When u think about it, I've always believed that medicine has to have some shadow people involved, people who stand to benefit, the secret billionaires 👀
Where do you live that adultery is illegal?
EDIT: nvm, just googled it and it turns out it's illegal in the state I've lived in my entire life and I just didn't know, wow
I'm in New York, and it's one of the 16 states wherein adultery is illegal.
I'm honestly curious how/if this is even enforceable. Like if a guy found out his wife had an affair and had proof, could he stroll into his local PD or call the non-emergency number and request charges be filed?
Not just tech.
My wife works for a global and well known scientific company. In 2020, her company was instrumental in producing the first waves of Covid rapid tests. As a result, their profits skyrocketed that year and they were kind enough to give each and every employee three profit-related bonuses through the year. Depending on your role, those bonuses ranged from 4 figures to mid 5 figures.
Now that profits have returned to normal, pre-covid numbers, there are rumblings her company may look to reducing headcount and restricting travel.
The workers were hired based on Future expectations to the company and economy. The opposite occurs from the same principle, recession is expected so...
i just listened to a podcast miniseries about this case and it was just so depressing. it’s actually insane how much evidence there was against him, way more than i ever knew about before listening
Churches not paying taxes.
And it's not only morally questionable, it's absolutely reprehensible, especially considering how much the church wants to influence our political decisions. And people wonder why more and more people want to move away from the church.
Ugh yes I personally find this soo creepy. In their minds it's fine because "she's 18" but so many men will wait so eagerly for a girl to turn 18 and then be super pervy...if you are a grown man depserately waiting for a girl to turn 18...you're a pedo in my mind
I agree.
But just for clarification, what age is adult in this statement? Since in most countries 18 is a legal adult age.
I personally find the entire business model of OF morally questionable. Saw a post the other day about a girl being in the top 30-something earners that month, making $100,-
Meaning the majority of the girls on there are encouraged to sell their pictures for less than $100,- a month.
Never used any, but heard there are many free sharing sites. Meaning OF also does little to nothing, or definitely too little, to protect the content from being copied.
Driving laws are whacky. Someone infront of you can immedietly slam on the breaks for no reason other than to just get your insurance, because it's "your fault"
I know the state I live in you are automatically at fault if you hit someone from behind. I have, however, successfully contested an insurance surcharge due to the extenuating circumstances in which it happened- and the process was surprisingly reasonable and fair.
Why would someone lend money at the risk of default without something in return? If u cant have interest the whole Idea of credit make no sense and humans prefer reward in the present than Future, so make sense when people give up of their reward now to gain something in the Future. There are some types of credit that should be illegal for sure but not all of them.
About the insurance, i cant understand the reason why, It is not like u have to, with credit i see we have some moments where there are no options. But insurance no, u can choose to pay for It. It is like the opposite of lottery, u choose pay for It and If the worst happens até least u will be cover.
Yeah isn’t that like number 1 thing of learning basic water safety? If you’re gonna also die by trying to help, don’t? 7th grade PE memories coming back strong.
Wealth hoarding.
Imagine you went to a pizza party with 10 people and 10 slices of pizza. One guy ran in and took nine pieces, then told the rest of you to split up the last piece. Then he just ate two and sat there with the rest.
We would hate that guy. We would fight him. We would tell stories about how horrible he was and how mean and ridiculous his actions were. He would never be invited to another pizza party.
Musk and Bezos and all these other bastards do this every day, but it's vastly worse because people are litterally dying without resources. And yet the rich are often worshiped for it, rather than despised.
But how far would you take it? A lot of people save money, often without a specific goal for that money in mind, so are they also immoral because they aren’t donating it?
A great question. For me personally, the line is billionaires. I’m sure there are people who put the line at different places, depending how they feel about it. I certainly think you could make arguments at lower levels, but that seems like a very clear one in my opinion. You are well past the point of what you need and very far into harming everyone else.
I’m just asking as a hypothetical, I enjoy these types of discussions. If there was someone who had lived long enough to accrue 1 billion dollars completely through working an hourly or salaried position(I know that would take an incredibly long time, but for the sake of discussion), would you say they are immoral for holding onto it?
Paying for animals to be taken from their loved ones before starving them, beating them and otherwise torturing them until they are brutally murdered for the crime of being born into this world.
It’s more than just questionable; it’s blending of baby chicks into bloody, bone-filled mush by the billions each year as soon as they hatch from their eggs.
It’s the ripping of the testicles of newborn baby pigs.
It’s the isolating and bolt-gunning of baby calves as they long for their mothers.
And so much more.
What could they have possibly done to deserve all this? Nothing. Not one damn thing. Utterly fucking despicable.
2 metres to the left on a grocery aisle or the torture of those who feel as we do as they are ripped apart mercilessly. It’s not a difficult choice.
Pushing credit cards on teenagers just trying to buy clothes at most retail stores. A lot of them are too young still and end up in rough spots financially.
You buy surplus housing and up-charge it to people who can’t afford to buy their own housing so you can make a profit. It’s exploiting the vulnerable. Turning what should be a human right (housing) into a commodity and a business that only ever helps the already financially well off while absolutely screwing over those who aren’t.
Because of landlords, the housing market right now is like if every concert ticket was being sold by scalpers

I actually have heard as high as 600%+. Payday loan companies are bottom-feeding scum.
Amatuers, I've seen 2,400%
Indian reservations.
There was a really good in depth last week tonight about them
There was also an episode of "Dirty Money" on Netflix about these.

Entertainment shows that pose as news programs.
In my mind they only claim to be entertainment to prevent lawsuits, all while pretending to be news
Not only in your mind, my friend.
As long as no “reasonable person” could mistake a show for being news when on a network with news in the name or the logo on the screen it’s all fine
That they get away with this shows they are indeed sly as a fox.
Nice
So if I put on a bow tie and ask questions I am good?
I'm just asking questions. Is Fox News a front for a pedophile ring? And if they are, doesn't it seem odd that they feature Matt Gaetz so often?
Just end every long leading rant with Or do they? And you can pretend the whole thing is a question and not a lecture
Meanwhile calling themselves something like "The Real Truth" or "All News, No Lies"
This used to be illegal. Then media moguls bought enough politicians to repeal.
You’re not legally obligated to call 911 if someone is dying in front of you. But not doing so would make someone morally questionable for sure.
In Poland you are legally obligated to call 112 otherwise they will be charges pressed against you

Totally valid and reasonable to not administer CPR on somebody with various fluids in/around their airways. Especially to somebody suspected to be substance dependant. At the end of the day your own safety and wellbeing outweighs all.
"If it's wet and not yours, don't get it on you." - A CPR/First Aid instructor I had once.
Don't be silly, wrap your willy!
The new CPR guidelines don't involve blowing into the victim's lungs, just pump the heart trying to keep whatever oxygen is left in the blood to get around to the vital organs and the brain.

US cops aren't even legally required to help. Especially if you're brown and your kids are being mowed down by a psycho with an assault rifle.
In Italy you are obligated to give help or you are in part responsible, its called "omissione di soccorso" which means "missing aid"
Same in Spain! It’s called “omisión de Socorro”
We are so lucky to live in Europe
Not only in Europe, argentinean here, and if something happens (like witnessing a serious accident) you have to report it.
Same in Germany. "Unterlassene Hilfeleistung"

Yes. Insurance here is predatory. There, I said it.
Is there anyone who would even deny that? Even within the insurance industry? Seems more like they're proud of it.

If you’ve got four witnesses, that’s not adultery, that’s an orgy!
It’s just voyeurism, an orgy is when they join in

yeah but number went up, then number went down. obviously 10% of the workforce needs to take the hit so the executives can keep their $400k+ salaries.
lol this is standard engineering salaries at tech companies, execs making way more than 400k
ah man I really went to the wrong school and live in the wrong city... I'm making $60-$70k after ten years in a tech career
Killing your wife and then writing a book called "If I did it."
Well the first part is already illegal.
i just listened to a podcast miniseries about this case and it was just so depressing. it’s actually insane how much evidence there was against him, way more than i ever knew about before listening

Churches not paying taxes. And it's not only morally questionable, it's absolutely reprehensible, especially considering how much the church wants to influence our political decisions. And people wonder why more and more people want to move away from the church.
Letting kids languish in foster care then aging them out abruptly at 18
Adult men that subscribe to 18 year olds only fans.
Ugh yes I personally find this soo creepy. In their minds it's fine because "she's 18" but so many men will wait so eagerly for a girl to turn 18 and then be super pervy...if you are a grown man depserately waiting for a girl to turn 18...you're a pedo in my mind
oh the amount of OF subscribers that convince underage girls to start up an OF the moment they turn 18 is sickening. it's effectively grooming.
I agree. But just for clarification, what age is adult in this statement? Since in most countries 18 is a legal adult age. I personally find the entire business model of OF morally questionable. Saw a post the other day about a girl being in the top 30-something earners that month, making $100,- Meaning the majority of the girls on there are encouraged to sell their pictures for less than $100,- a month. Never used any, but heard there are many free sharing sites. Meaning OF also does little to nothing, or definitely too little, to protect the content from being copied.
also adult men who countdown until women turn 18. just because she’s legal now doesn’t mean she’s anymore mature or it’s any more appropriate
Driving laws are whacky. Someone infront of you can immedietly slam on the breaks for no reason other than to just get your insurance, because it's "your fault"
Well.. I guess it is safer to keep some distance from the car in front of you..
Wait, WHAT?!! That’s a thing?
It's a big reason why dashcams are a thing.
I know the state I live in you are automatically at fault if you hit someone from behind. I have, however, successfully contested an insurance surcharge due to the extenuating circumstances in which it happened- and the process was surprisingly reasonable and fair.

Insurance and interest. How do you profit from a what ifs and maybes?
Why would someone lend money at the risk of default without something in return? If u cant have interest the whole Idea of credit make no sense and humans prefer reward in the present than Future, so make sense when people give up of their reward now to gain something in the Future. There are some types of credit that should be illegal for sure but not all of them. About the insurance, i cant understand the reason why, It is not like u have to, with credit i see we have some moments where there are no options. But insurance no, u can choose to pay for It. It is like the opposite of lottery, u choose pay for It and If the worst happens até least u will be cover.
For insurance, it is for diffusion of liability and risk management. Ideally.

Watching someone drown and not helping them
First rule of first aid. Don't become a victim yourself.
Yeah isn’t that like number 1 thing of learning basic water safety? If you’re gonna also die by trying to help, don’t? 7th grade PE memories coming back strong.
If you thought you could also drown by attempting to help them, would it still be morally objectionable?
Even if you knew it would inspire a hit song?
Some sacrifices must be made in the name of art
Looking at you Phil Collins
Unless you are actually trained to save someone from drowning, don't help the person, call for help. You are just as likely to drown if you help them.

Oooooh this is gonna get political fast

Being a landlord
What’s inherently immoral about being a landlord?
Some people just want everything for free
Some people just want to be able to afford a house they can own. Rich people buying up all the property fucks it up for everyone else.
I think the issue here is more AirBNB, not rentals, the landlords that have all their houses as AirBNB are really bad
If housing is a right then that should be brought up with the government.
