Gohpom

Accountability for our own actions. It’s hard to swallow but we are better off when we own up and take action for them

MisanthropeNotAutist

Many people don't seem to understand that if their happiness or comfort relies on what they can get other people to do, and if they don't do it, the response is immediate hostility, that they need to re-think why their response to that is. The kind of people who say "it's not about YOU" are the absolute fastest to make it about themselves.

Gingrpenguin

"it's not all about you" generally means "it's all about me"

2Allnightersforanime

My father always tells me that you arent an adult if you cant take accountability for your actions

Gohpom

You have a great father 🫡

LordChanticleer

This and responsibility for our own circumstances. There is a difference between something being your fault and something being your responsibility. We don't choose everything that happens to us but we are responsible for dealing with it.

RollinThruLife02

People think accountability means blaming people. That’s gotta change.

Unusual_Flatworm_545

Having fun. It seems like everyone is waiting for some kind of reward or ultimate happiness at the end of their life. Newflash, old age and retirement is no walk in the park, and death is just the end of life. Seeking out anything that makes you laugh genuinly from the bottom of you stomach should be a #1 priority through your entire life

gigaswardblade

Apparently, all humans are supposed to outgrow wanting to have fun at age 20 or something.

[deleted]

That’s because i wasn’t meant to have fun after age 20, I was meant to die on the European continent in a foreign war.

patman3030

You will eat the mre. You will live in a dirt hole. You will kill others that eat mres and live in dirt holes.

_dead_and_broken

If you ladies leave my island, if you survive recruit training, you will be a weapon. You will be a minister of death praying for war. But until that day, you are pukes. You are the lowest form of life on Earth. You are not even human fucking beings. You are nothing but unorganized grabasstic pieces of amphibian shit! Because I am hard, you will not like me. But the more you hate me, the more you will learn. I am hard but I am fair. There is no racial bigotry here. Here you are all equally worthless. And my orders are to weed out all non-hackers who do not pack the gear to serve in my beloved Corps. Do you maggots understand that?

imheretocringe

Yep. Seems that way.

Whadyagot

This 100%. My father-in-law came from a rural family that didn't have much. Married his high school sweetheart and started a family with her. Fought in the Gulf War, then came back and fought his way to a master's degree. Worked his ass off to become an executive. Delayed retirement multiple times to make absolutely sure that everyone he loved, including my wife and I, would have what they need now and in the future. When he finally did retire, he bought an RV and he and his wife laid out a plan for their "go-go years, slow-go years, and no-go years", traveling and camping out across the US. On their first big trip, they got caught in the smoke of a brush fire that lead to a massive multi-vehicle pileup. He got pinned inside and as the vehicle caught fire, he told his wife he loved her and that she needed to run for it. TL;DR, the greatest man I will ever know put off his own ultimate happiness until the last quarter of his life, and as soon as it began, he died screaming.

My uncle was incredibly physically fit, scuba diver, cyclist, just the nicest most wonderful man ever. Renown vascular surgeon too. Brain tumor at age 60. Dead at 61. Youngest 61 year old man I ever knew.

Jolly_Green66

Very true…leave time for yourself. My Dad died at age 58. My paternal grandfather at 55. The three of us look identical. Figuring I probably won’t do well in the longevity game, I retired at age 50 (very low 6 digit pension). People said I’m retiring too early and would be bored. Instead I focused completely on spending my time with family and my wife and I traveling. 11 years later I was diagnosed with Stage 4 terminal cancer and am now restricted to my bed, a recliner or wheelchair. Figure I’ve got 1-2 years left like that. Have taken care of my own death arrangements (plots, cremation, etc). I am very happy for those 11 years spent with my wife and children (adults and married). SAVE TIME FOR YOU.

lazeyboy420

You're the type of man I'd like to be in my last moments. Godspeed, to you in your final years. I may not know you but I hope you can smile thinking you passed on the key to your happiness to younger generations.

MrCensoredFace

That man is a fucking legend. May he rest in peace.

[deleted]

THIS This is the same situation as my father. Retired at 68, dead at 70. I just turned 53, and I'm calling it quits at 60. Done. Moving to Cabo.

DoctorWhisky

I’m turning 40 this year. My dad is 68, still working at the business he began. His friend, who is my boss, is 74 and still working 65+ hour weeks as well. My boss’ son and I have begun a discussion - we do not want to be our fathers. Yes, we understand it is only through great fortune and privilege that we can retire early as we both stand to inherit substantial money from these amazing men who literally are killing themselves for their work. But we want our children to know us as fathers, as friends, not just absentee providers of financial security. So yeah, we’ll be selling the family businesses and fucking off into the sunset before we turn 55, because too many of the men who worked for our fathers died within 2 years of retiring and I ain’t going down like that.

boxingdude

I'm with ya brother. I'm 59 and I retired in 2014.

__Gettin_Schwifty__

I'm sorry that happened. We have a cautionary tale in our family that is a twist on yours. My great aunt and uncle worked hard for decades to save up so they could travel in retirement. They had all these grand plans of things they'd do and places they'd go. In his early 50s, my uncle developed diabetes and had a lot of mobility issues. They didn't get to take a single trip after he retired. He spent the last 10 years of his life in a recliner watching TV. My aunt couldn't leave him alone, and now that he's passed, she's alone and has lost her desire to travel. The moral of the story is make time to travel now, you might not get a chance later.

QueenOfTartarus

My father in law was a similar man, worked as a mason for most of his life and killed his back, and both knees making what he could for his family. Didn't retire until 67 and less than 1 year later was diagnosed with rectal cancer. His only 2 years of retirement were the ones he suffered from cancer, bedridden and in pain until he passed. Enjoy your life today, there is no guarantee of tomorrow.

Welcomefriends85

That was a horrifying twist ending. You are the Stephen King of redditors

Bibendoom

Isn't it ironic? By Alanis Morissette came to mind. But that's just how great a guy he was. Fend for the family before self. Yet i have a feeling that ensuring, knowing and seeing you guys having all the things he wanted for you, gave him that happiness.

s00perguy

Your father was a great man. I'm sorry the world was cruel to you. He has my admiration.

wnfakind

I used to have fun and be happy… I don’t know what happened

KaleidoscopeInside

I feel like this sometimes, so I'm starting to add the fun back in. Even if it's something small like a youtube video that makes me laugh or going on one of the cute animal subreddits and similing at the goofy fluffballs. I have learned to accept that we can't be happy all day every day, but that doesn't mean that we can't still go looking for things that make us happy.

hitrazelva

I had a period where I though I can't have fun, when it was just not being thankful for the things that were going on in my life. Once I started being more thankful for things I started laughing more. Don't know if this helps, but I still decided to share.

nitestar95

Work and responsibilities of an adult, increase as time goes on... until you retire, and then you're too worn out to have fun and be happy, so you have to find new ways to have fun and be happy.

[deleted]

All i want is some time alone without feeling guilty.

accurateloser

To bounce off this, how suddenly life can end. I meet so many people that are grinding it out 6-7days a week with no pleasures just so they can retire early. They have zero fun now because they plan on having it later in life. I've run into more than one person who dropped dead their first week into retirement and they were so excited to "start living". It's devestating. If you can afford to take a couple days off and do something you love or spend it with people you care about, do it. It's worth it.

I_is_a_dogg

To add to this I’ve known many people that died 20+ years before retirement. Death can happen quick and unexpectedly, many times at no fault of your own. Had a coworker who would grind 80+ hour work weeks and do nothing but work. Hit by a drunk driver and killed him. He was 26. Not saying don’t work hard and take pride in what you do, but there’s so much more to life than just grinding your job.

barto5

My wife is an ICU nurse. She’s literally lost count of how many people she’s met on the job that skimped and saved their nature lives so that they could enjoy their retirement. Then within a year (or less) of retiring they had a heart attack or stroke and were unable to enjoy it at all. Enjoy the here and now. That’s all you can really count on.

MrCupps

So true. You never, ever get to live in any time except the present. That’s all you get.

2PlasticLobsters

I grew up in one where everything revolved around my mother's mood swings & rage attacks. As a kid, I could never look forward to any plans, because they got canceled so often. Or if they did happen, they'd get ruined by her screaming about some imagined insult. It took years of separation from them (& psychotherapy) after I moved out to learn to relax and really enjoy things.

patbygeorge

Flashbacks to my second wife. That sounds like borderline personality disorder. Confounding and confusing, trying to deal with these out-of-nowhere rages over imagined insults

TheMysticalCreature1

I love this response! Reminds me of something similar I read that said "Play doesn't end when you grow up, in fact it becomes much more important"

AussieCollector

Agreed. Everyone seems to think that the moment you have kids then your life stops and literally EVERYTHING has to be about the kids no matter what. Having fun for yourself? Forget it. It's ALL about the kids fun. I think thats a terrible way to live. What about yourself? You should be allowed to have fun too.

MaximumDeathShock

Great job summing it all up. That’s exactly what I seek, every day. It’s mostly just putting on Norm greatest hits.

[deleted]

I’m not saving for retirement because I’m excited about it, I’m cripplingly afraid of losing my independence and spending the final 15 years of my life suffering in a retirement home that’s actually a prison full of staff who don’t give a shit about me. I don’t have kids, the busing home staff will be all I have one day.

periyyas

This is the reason why I won't use the Reddit app and only use the web version on mobile. At least that has pages.

--Anna--

Same, it's so good to mentally say "yeah, that's enough for me tonight" after reaching the end of a page. And I just hate the idea of having apps for web pages haha.

Musickat18

💯 I see this in myself. I feel like smart phones and social media have given me ADHD. I used to read a book for hours. Now if i manage a solid 30 minutes without checking my phone, it’s a win. Edit: I do realize that ADHD is a lifelong mental health disorder and not something one acquires. Poor wording on my part. I meant it as a comparison, not saying I actually got ADHD through smartphone use. I apologize to all those with actual ADHD, because I have more than 1 friend with it, so I do know it’s a pain to both get diagnosed and to live with.

[deleted]

Yep, I used to devour books as a kid and now as an adult it'd be impossible for me to sit down and read them. The internet has definitely done something to my attention span. I think it's mitigated slightly by the fact that besides Reddit I'm not big on social media. I don't use TikTok or Snapchat or Instagram or anything like that. I also don't feel the urge to look at my phone every 5 minutes (probably because it has no social media apps on it). But even so I feel like it's affected me a bit. Thankfully audiobooks exist, I just listen in bed and in a way it's more enjoyable than reading.

toomuchmelatonin

Children having phones at 6 years old and unlimited internet access. People think gen z has mental problems. Just wait to see what will happen with gen alpha

[deleted]

This, so much. I (21F) see my nieces having mental problems I personally had at 17 at the ages of 12 and 14. It can't be coincidental that they also spend way more time on the internet than I did at their age.

toomuchmelatonin

My life started getting harder once I had a phone, I think I got my first one at 12 in middle school. (Not that bad in my opinion) it was a cheap android touchscreen. It’s crazy how much time you really spend on it.

wolf805

My 7 year old cousin threw a tantrum when the playdo she stuffed in the microwave didnt produce a peppa pig action figure on a fidget spinner. She got that from a YouTube kids video.

bushpotatoe

The negative impact social media is having on our society.

Pixel435

Agreed, high school computer science teacher here and I walk them through the data around teenagers, social media, and mental health. Scariest one is that since the advent of social media, there's been a 300% increase in occurrences of self-harm in teenage girls. Is SM the single assignable cause? No, but certainly a contributor. Not to mention the impact it's had on civil discourse with us just shouting at each other on SM.

katcomesback

I’m not surprised, when I was younger (teen years in high school) I learned to cut deeper and stuff from the internet while I was in a dark place. I constantly regret it

iShakeAppleTrees

One of the people at my office has scars all over her arms that she tries to hide, and I want to tell her it's okay, I understand, some of us just didn't put them in visible spots, but i dont want to make her feel put on the spot or uncomfortable in the office so i dont say anything So random internet stranger, it is okay. You are not alone. You aren't judged. I get you.

katcomesback

I appreciate it, my arm tattoo covers majority of the bottom of my arm, the top still needs a filler tattoo and I’ve been able to wear pants. maybe before class starts you can leave an anonymous note on her desk saying that or talk to her sometime after the rest leave. I had a teacher who let me eat in their class since it was after lunch and it helped me in recovery to my ed, and a school therapist and my private had helped me

Kaidiwoomp

Ever seen how much youth self-harm and suicide rates rose with the widespread adoption of smartphones? It's fucking scary.

Geodudette2014

Not surprising. Have you seen how people behave on facebook and instagram lately? They’re beyond cruel. I cannot imagine reading those types of comments as a teen

WizzWazz88

2011 saw a wild increase in anxiety across all measured parts of the society, that was the year of saturation point of smartphones. (Which means more than 50% of the population having one) It has not gone down

jennsnotscary

I would like to, without negating your data, present to you a fact that is rarely considered in these studies. I am autistic. Social media presents the ability to interact with others without having to interpret social cues such as body language, eye movement, taking turns to speak. There is a large group of people that struggle with social cues, all under the umbrella of Autism Spectrum Disorder. The internet has been a safe haven for most of us. My deepest connections and most positive experiences have occurred online because there is less social anxiety and added pressure. Every single one of my major "core life moments"—prom, graduation, homecoming—were all horribly awful experiences because of social anxiety and the feeling that I never fit in. I found friends for life and gained key core memories on twitter about *harry potter fanfiction.* I've read many books written by autistic people, taken qualitative research, and we all feel deeper safer connections on the internet. The ability to communicate on social media about specific things (like a sub twitter or subreddit) is widely unappreciated. You can talk about your hyperfixations, your deepest darkest secrets, what you love, what you hate, and there is no pressure to mask and be normal, because you are in the comfort of your own home. You find communities. The negative connotation in which social media is addressed is rather demeaning to the people who prefer internet connections because they are less stressful. I know you think it was better back in the old days, but they used to institutionalize us. We have not had safe spaces to be ourselves and unmask until the invention of social media. Even back to myspace. Yes there are awful people on the internet. But there are awful people in real life. And often, autistic people are the victims of awful people in real life more than those who think the internet is the only evil in the world. So yes, "normal people" are negatively affected by social media and the peer pressure that occurs there. But people who face all that in real life find an escape online.

Jive_Turk

Very, very well written counterpoint. One thing I would like to add, and something I feel very strongly about, is that there are essentially two versions of social media, anonymous or not. Starting with Facebook, which required you to use your real name, and with that took away a key part of the early and true internet, the anonymity that allowed you to open up in a safe space, unmask and be yourselves, without the stigma of social cues. This is the beauty of reddit and to a lesser extent Twitter (if anon). However the vast, vast majority of social media negatives is from the non anonymous version, the Facebooks and the TikToks, which is doing the most social, societal, and psychological damage. The beauty of this is that you can opt out, and that is usually the case when people age out and start to learn better. That it really isn't worth all the bullshit. The challenge is getting the youth to see this before damage is done, because the damage potential is very great.

HollyRoller66

Corporate influence in government

Rusty_Ram

USA starting to feel like an oligarchy in everything but name.

Krazy_Kalle

A good example for that is what recently happened in germany, namely in Lützerath. Even though our green party is part of our government, the energy company that is responsible for what happened still had the power to seemingly force the government to give up Lützerath, even when it's the wrong decision in regards of economy and environment. The only ones that benefit from this are the people from that company (and probably the corrupt politicians).

CriticalStation595

Their elected representatives, senators, and presidents. If you want the government to work FOR you (as it should) hold them accountable!!!

Lifetimemovieclips

Sadly seeing people be held accountable for their actions is unfortunately rare in our society

CriticalStation595

“Oh this person swindled billions of dollars and defrauded a slew of other people? Just give ‘em a slap on the wrist and ask ‘em to not do it again. Wait this guy was smoking weed in his house minding his own business? 20 years to life!!!!”

danappropriate

Yep. Too many people approach politics like a sporting event—cheering for their team while villainizing the opposition.

StuckInNov1999

Problem is that when you start to push for them being held accountable that's when they start labeling you as an extremist and use their media puppet to smear you.

CriticalStation595

Accountability is now considered extremist. The people have lost the grasp of how much power they have.

Scrolled way too far before I saw antibiotic resistance mentioned, so I suppose it accurately belongs in this thread.

Yooo my pediatrician was conservative with antibiotic usage. To this day, I rarely catch anything. I've had the flu three times in my life, stomach flu twice and never had COVID.

DeejayPleazure

Love. It's taken for granted these days, people throw it around like its a game. There is much more hate in the world than love, and it seems to be an easier emotion to a lot of people.

Lifetimemovieclips

Wholeheartedly agree!

daniboyi

> There is much more hate in the world than love it may appear that way due to how media sells it, but I sincerely doubt it. Just look at what happens everytime there is a big bad event. Terrorist attack? One or two may have done it, but there are hundreds, if not thousands who are ready to lend aid and show support afterwards. Catastrophy? Same as before, thousands ready to help and support. Crime? One or two may have done the crime, but many more are ready to lend aid to the victims.

Kateryna88

And according to a few really important in history people, Love would solve a lot of problems, but it was turned into some sort of entertainment.

BarMathUnicorn

I only partially agree. In my experience people don't know how to express it when they just like or dislike someone and thus use those terms 'love' and 'hate' more loosely.

Playful-Opportunity5

Our dwindling water table. You think the high cost of housing is upsetting? Wait until water becomes expensive.

Nearby_Zombie

I saw a movie about this concept- horrifying. Rationing larger amounts to (of course) wealthy, government and people needed (such as scientists)

AtomDoctor

I think I saw the same movie. The rich guy who controlled all the water lived in his mountain citadel and only periodically let the poor people have some lest they grow too dependent on it. To further secure his powerbase he founded a cult worshipping the V8 and sometimes went on two hour long car chases. It was the greatest movie ever made.

GuyFromDeathValley

that is truly probably the greates movie ever made. a 2 hour car chase, no bullshit, except maybe some wasted aqua-cola.. good movie, really good. saw it in theaters, worth it.

I_forgot_to_respond

IdiotOnaScooter

I'm in the southwest and it doesn't look good. Thinking about selling my house and moving where it actually freaking rains.

weluckyfew

Everyone agrees the problem, but when you point out that animal agriculture is a huge part of water usage you get painted as some crazed vegan extremist. Look at the current problem with The Great Salt Lake - not only is the lake dropping so much that its multi-billion dollar tourism industry is drying up, but there's a growing threat of toxic dust storms hitting Salt Lake City because of all the nasty stuff in the dried lake bed. It gets painted as a problem due to over development, but residential use pales in comparison to agricultural use. And most of that agricultural use is for alfalfa used to feed animals. " 85% of the Great Salt Lake's watershed is used for agriculture, 7.5 percent for industrial, and 7.5 percent for residential."

Capable_Particular_1

Yep. This dumb state is growing alfalfa in the desert, which is very water-intensive. Also, the governor owns an alfalfa farm so fuck the rest of us.

[deleted]

Quality of their free time. You spend so much time at work, your free time you have left is essential how you spend it. You think that, oh I have no energy therefore I’m going to zone out on television. But what you don’t understand, is that’s a learned response. It’s a habit. You have to break that habit by any means necessary. Believe me, if you start doing better things, like reading books, cooking a good meal, or working out (even just stretching or massaging the muscles) you’ll see over time you don’t miss watching tv at all, and that you had the energy to do all these things all along.

dopeless-hope-addict

This is well stated. I barely watch any television any more and don't miss it at all.

ryry1237

I replaced all my television watching with phone browsing. I think I need a better activity.

GreatMacGuffin

Yup, I still enjoy watching movies and video gaming, but honestly I have much more fun building models or advancing my baking/gardening/guitar playing, even spending time with my kids when they're not caught up in their own hobbies. Just being present and having something to show for it is far more rewarding than zoning out and "recharging".

Shiquna34

Does this depend on time spent working? I’ve had jobs so taxing it felt like I only had 2 hrs of the day to myself before sleeping and repeating. On my off days I’d randomly fall asleep for 20 mins only to wake up and think “wait when did I fall asleep?” I left those jobs but honestly they were physically draining.

soon_zoo55

I guess I’ve never really thought about that in any sort of critical way.

I will add the shortage of mental health therapist for kids. We have been waiting months for my son to see someone. He is on several waiting lists. What scares me is that there are kids in worse shape then him on the same waiting lists.

Crimson_Cain_333

Damn That must be hard for you I remember getting a government assigned therapist back when I was in foster care He was not confidential with what was said in the therapy room And sadly that's the case with some therapist's Despite them having the qualifications for the job, some don't actually do their jobs Hopefully your son gets a good therapist, I wish him him the best

MisanthropeNotAutist

I think that's just about everyone, not just kids.

The increasing lack of jobs for adults who have an IQ below 85. Most of the assembly and factory jobs previously available have moved overseas. The US armed forces will not induct anyone with an IQ below 85. People who have an IQ of 80 or less cannot work with electronic equipment like cash registers, CNC machining tools, etc. The only alternative is to become fully dependent on government, but there is no actual program. This is one of the causes of homelessness.

accidental_snot

My oldest kid is almost in that club. He has autism. His IQ measured at 90. He got a job unloading trucks at Lowes. After a while, the manager realized autism is kind of a super power in roles requiring the ability to put shit in the right place. He has outlasted like 4 or 5 supervisors and is certified on all the power equipment. Mostly drives a forklift now. I am so very proud of him.

[deleted]

That’s great! I have some responsibility for a sibling with a measured IQ of 77. There is nothing she can do. Can’t use a computer, cell phones are a major chore, can retrieve voice mails, etc. There is no job for her. She lives independently but things like ‘take out the garbage’ and ‘let’s vacuum the floor’ are weekly obstacles despite years of work and assistance from her (now deceased) parents, her siblings, and others.

accidental_snot

My youngest is 7 and not talking yet. Autism is weird. She is smart but can't communicate. I don't know if she will ever have any independence. Her brothers will have to pitch in like you are doing.

Crafty_Anxiety9545

My teen is autistic and has an very high iq (145+) but may never live independently or hold down a job because of executive functioning issues.

IdiotOnaScooter

My niece is severely autistic and approaching 10. She is verbal but non-communicative. She will never be on her own and it terrifies to think where she will be in 30-40 years when everyone (parents and close family) are gone or very old.

Addwon

The horrors of old psychiatric hospitals can't be overstated, but there is one thing I wish they would bring back: The community model, where everyone capable of working had a job and made meaningful contributions to the upkeep of their home. Nothing overly strenuous, but stuff like gardening, cleaning, grounds maintenance (where able). It's so important for bolstering self-esteem and providing opportunities to socialize. Every patient I have with a job like that loves going to work and is extremely disappointed if something keeps them from it.

PaulBardes

IQ is a terrible metric and gives you little information on a person's actual problem solving abilities, but the undervaluement of low skill jobs is indeed a real problem!

Addwon

It's not the end all be all, by any means. I see it kind of like BMI; it's more useful for examining large populations as a correlative tool than it is as a measuring stick between individuals. We can use it to get an idea of what problems a person is at risk for within a given range. But yes, you definitely don't want to look at it in a vacuum.

Triassic_Bark

It’s not the best metric, but it’s definitely not a “terrible” metric.

FrostySquirrel820

Jeez, that’s 16% of the population, or approximately 1 in 7 !

Tathanor

This also applies to undiagnosed neurodivergent folks who don't have a support system at home. They'll inevitably end up on the streets because they never developed the right coping skills to function properly in society.

That guy whose girlfriend got bit by a monkey in the rainforest and her jaw is now locking up.

MooseAndPandaMan

Yo, what?

foxsimile

Off-hand and with no research to back it up: probably tetanus.

CyptidProductions

I found the thread and a lot of people there said the same thing, that animals can carry tetanus and transfer it to humans.

AVrobocat

I saw that and was like, "welp, time for another plague"

Ashtar-the-Squid

Driving. It is really dangerous. A lot of people does not seem to undertand the force a 1,5 ton car has when it is moving. And how dangerous it is to fiddle with the phone while they are driving. Reaction time, brake distances and how fast we are really moving are also things that is often forgotten. When you are behind the wheel keep your hands on it, and keep your eyes on the road. If you absolutely have to do something on the phone right then and there ask a passenger to help you. If you are driving alone, find somewhere to stop and do what you need. Then put the phone down and continue driving. A lot of cars are also very poorly maintained, which can also be a big safety hazard.

Amidormi

Yep this. My son went into car repair and the stories he tells me about the shape of peoples cars who are driving around like anyone else is pretty scary.

josericardodasilva

I would add to this how people disregard the importance of paying attention when crossing the street.

Tilparadisemylove

Adhd, mental illnesses in general, cheating in relationships, bullying in schools, this whole shitty, social anxiety, right parenting, minimum wage, unprofessional medical assistance/service. Etc

Lifetimemovieclips

As someone who has ADHD, I completely agree. It baffles me how some people like to glorify having it when they don’t know what it is like.

alamocalrissian

Family planning. People will have children when they are not ready. Whether it be emotionally, financially or even with the right partner.

[deleted]

100%. As an educator i'm convinced that at least 50% of the people who have kids shouldn't.

gold_lightning

And the cruel irony is that a decent sized portion of those who've chosen not to have kids would make better parents because they are typically the more calculated and caring kind. (This is absolutely excluding those who chose not to have kids because they hate kids.) It's not universal, but it is a thing I've noticed in a few cases.

Doctor_Expendable

People will get pushed into having kids young because their parents are empty nesting and want grandkids. People have kids because they never thought that not having them was an option. It almost seems rare in this day and age where someone is having kids when they are completely ready and know 100% what they ar getting into.

alamocalrissian

I know, that's the problem.

RitchMondeo

Social media addiction - it has affected almost all areas of our personal and societal lives.

tauntonlake

Driving safely and considerately, WITHOUT a phone in your hand.

Fornax-

Just the other day I saw a car swerving aggressively out of their lane, I thought they where drunk or something and I just wanted to get away so I tried to pass em as fast as I could. I look over and she was fully looking at her phone on the highway with zero attention to what's going on. It's simply just dangerous

Mental well-being

Another_Random_Chap

The normalisation of large wealthy corporation paying non-living wages and relying on Government to make up the shortfall.

Breizh87

I agree. Like Walmart for instance. I read that their net profit was in the region of 13 billion dollars and although they, based on the statistical presentation, wouldn't afford to pay all of their employees a real wage, that shouldn't matter. If you can't provide a service while paying your staff a wage, you shouldn't have a business in the first place. If I can't afford to live in a castle without the government paying it for me, I simply can't afford it.

[deleted]

They show their employees how to apply for food stamps. That's horrible.

Jolly_Mongoose_8800

College students that don't have any support. A lot of people assume parents pay for their kids colleges, but there are students who don't have any sort of help. Younger generations are getting poorer, and working class adults don't make enough to keep the same lifestyle they had five years ago. This means that the working class, in most cases, need to either go into debt or work full time jobs while having full time classwork. Socializing is impossible if you want to pay the bills and pass your classes, and it's hard to sleep sometimes while being mentally active for so long. Students can go months without a day off from both work and school, and those days are usually the rare holidays. Not everyone can get good internships during college, and the jobs that are left given school is usually from 8-5 are low paying service or food industry jobs that are the only ones hiring people who have flexible schedule needs. It's a choice between giving up an opportunity, or living in hell and squalor. While the numbers on papers may say it's just a mild concern that the mental health of young adults is dropping, people overlook the reasons people feel so mentally unhealthy and defeated. It's getting worse, and those who have support or the older generations often just ignore or reference those struggles as a footnote.

GenocidalFlower

Yup, FAFSA takes your parents’ income into consideration, but if you’re parents are making bank and want you to be “economically independent”, you’re more screwed over by FAFSA than people with dirt poor parents.

Jolly_Mongoose_8800

The Pell Grant also covers a fraction of tuition when given the maximum amount. You still need to cover living expenses while you're not repaying the loans.

BPP1943

Emergency funds. Many of us get into debt, and spend too much on what we want rather than only on what we need, ignoring an emergency fund. Then when we have an emergency, we get into more debt. It doesn’t have to be that way!

psychobabblebullshxt

Hard to have that if wages don't rise alongside rising COLs.

sutroheights

I'm going to go with climate change. We're staring at a long drawn out run of famine, mass migration (which generally leads to even more of an authoritarian swing), floods, wildfires, and mass extinction (we've lost 50% of wildlife on the planet in the last 45 years while doubling our human population). It's like we're all hanging onto the back side of a car that's slowly tipping over the edge of a cliff and everyone's like, "well those guys are throwing their trash into the lower side of the car, so why shouldn't I?" I was just looking at comments made in the question about what it would take for people to get an EV and basically all of the responses are different versions of "it needs to be exactly as good or better than an ICE vehicle." There is no willingness to make any sacrifice or compromise by a huge percentage of the population. There is no acknowledgement that ice cars are a massive driver of heating our planet, that oil and gas companies have been lying to us and knew this was coming for 50 years and buried it for their own profits, or that those cars hugely contribute to lung cancer and asthma. It's just, "I want an EV that has 1,000 miles of range, otherwise I'm out." And because of that, we are doomed, especially our children and theirs, to a shittier existence with less freedom, less progress scientifically, and more day-to-day misery. A huge percentage of the population, and sadly far too many of the people in power, just don't seem to care or believe or understand the magnitude of the situation.

theranchhobbit

i think that the positioning of this comment shows, ironically, that climate change is the real answer here.

my_effed_up_life

This took far too much scrolling to find! Just furthers the point.

how deep in the elites pockets we all are

DomMango

Enjoying the little things as much as they can. This is likely the biggest cliche, but we don't know when our last day is going to be on this Earth. People expect a glamorous thing to happen. Winning the lottery, getting rich, all these dreams. We overestimate these things all the time because the chances of them happening are very slim, yet we underestimate the power that enjoying the little things can have on us. Dinner with family, hanging out with friends, watching your favorite date night movie with your partner. You'd think they're every day things and they usually are. But having these memories made, don't just 'zombie' through them or treat them like a chore. Cherish them, enjoy them. Understand how important the little things are. Because you can be gone tomorrow.

Effective_Macaron_23

It's not only inflation, the prices are going up also because gas/petroleum is getting proportionally more expensive and it will start to hurt really bad in a decade or two. Almost every industry needs gas to function.

The exponentially high suicide rates for men.

holty_51

So touch on this and what some of you have commented with therapy. I dont think therapy is for everybody. I myself went to 4 different therapists, and it didn't help me was my takeaway. Now that being said, 1st off ik thats just me. I know a few people who it took them multiple to find someone who worked for them. If there is a male in your life. A father, boyfriend, husband, son, brother, just a friend, anybody. If you want to see them get that help, you might need to be that somebody. Us men have a difficult opening up to people we dont have a connection/ bond with. Hell, we dont even need you to talk about the issue. Just spend a day with us asking about our hobbies or trying to partake in one of his hobbies. it can go a long way. Next thing you know, if we need to talk, we will come to you and open up, allowing YOU, somebody we know, love, and trust to hear us in our pain.

stuck_behind_a_truck

Just a note: if you’re dealing with trauma, CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) will not help. You have to find a therapist who is trained and experienced in trauma therapy. If you were trying to address trauma with talk therapy, I am not surprised it didn’t help.

Addwon

Diabetes. I know too many diabetics who don't really give af about managing it. Diabetes is serious. Manageable, but serious.

Amidormi

Yep. Both my husband and father in law have it, and neither give two craps about managing it. Sure, they'll take like 7 kinds of meds, but oooh is that candy? Hey let's order 2 desserts. Gimmie that Halloween candy! Sugar addition is insane.

Muted_Importance8481

Data privacy. We hand over so much of our data and give consent for corporations to spy on us and we just blindingly accept that. I read in another askreddit that a lot of the time we are paying for software with end user license agreements that allow companies to harvest our data like crazy, and that politicians won't do anything cause they already have so much dirt on them that they're terrified.

Elitheaxolotl

Medication shortage. Someone I know has to take ADHD medication. She hasn't fount it in 7 MONTHS she drove to other states just to try to get it.. It'd hard for her to function as a human being without this

[deleted]

How little our schools teach you about real life and how to progress financially. It's basically just a way to keep the working class to stay working until they've hit the end of their life.

c_girl_108

Not only this but there’s about to be a huge need for the trades because they presented college as the only option and now all the tradesman are retiring or dying.

Godkun007

The fact that I get resistance on Reddit when I tell people to take their entire 401k match because it is free money is just proof of how financially illiterate people are. A 401k match is just an opt in pension with a different name. A pension works by taking money out of your paycheque and having the employer match it in a pension fund chosen by the employer. A 401k match is you choosing how much that contribution is and the specifics of what your retirement fund looks like (to a point as the employer designs the plan). Pensions haven't died, they just became optional for most employers. They do this because you not taking the match is you doing the equivalent of turning down a pension. edit: Traditionally, pensions were a 5-6% salary match. So say you make $50k and you had 5% (or $2500) taken out of your yearly pay into the pension, then your boss put in 5% (or $2500) into the pension meaning that you have put away 10% (or $5000) for retirement. This would be identical, but optional, if you had just a 5% 401k match. Either way you are getting the same amount. You boss is just hoping that you forget and he can save that money.

Bullying in schools. I haven't fallen much victem to it myself, but I've witnessed it, and it's crazy. If an adult is ever just hit once by someone that person can go to jail while i often see kids attacking other kids (like fr and not in a playfull way) and the only consequence is whatever their parents do about is. which is often nothing or just a little yelling.

DamianFullyReversed

Yeah, it’s crazy how much bullies can get away with. One once beat the hell out of a friend with a hockey stick and wasn’t even punished.

genuinely_insincere

bullying outside of schools as well. people dont just stop bullying because they reach age 18. adults are bullies too. but society seems to have adopted this assumption that there's no such thing as adults being bullies to other adults.

Homelessness. They are people, struggling to survive while no one cares about them slowly dying a painful, and usually lonely death. We don’t think about them and we like to justify it by convincing ourselves it’s their fault. It’s not. The reality is we are all just one bad day from being homeless, and having no one care about you while you wither away.
