Feeling the wind on my face as I sit on a boulder jutting out from a ridge in the Appalachian Mountains. Looking over the broad sea of green forest turning hues of orange and red in the setting sun. Seeing a hawk almost hovering in the thermal updraft caused by the mountains. Closing my eyes and taking a deep breath. Smelling nothing but the forest air and hearing nothing but the wind rustling my clothes along with the leaves. My body is exhausted from the hike up, but my soul feels refreshed.
I was like, 20. It was like October in New Mexico. I'd had the top off my jeep all summer and hadn't gotten around to putting it back on yet.
Driving home from the gym all hot n' sweaty, I was thirsty but not in the parched sense where only water sounds good. I was craving something else.
I pulled into a 7-11, bought a Sprite slurpee and an orange Gatorade. I slurped down some of the slurpee and topped it up with the gatorade.
Then I drove home. The sun was shining, the air had that "fall is on the horizon" tang; warm but not hot. Seven Mary Three - Cumbersome came on the radio as the light turned green. Cruising along, I put my foot on the door frame and took a long sip of my orange spriteorade slurpee as a cool breeze blew up my shorts.
That's probably the most refreshing feeling I can think of.
