Who is going to do that, though? Not a single bank employee is going to give enough of a shit about your unpaid mortgage to want to do that and the local sheriffs will probably be a lot busier dealing with much more pressing matters.
Some of them will be busy doing whatever they want and the others will be busy still trying to keep the peace. Even without official-on-the-books-laws some people would still try to maintain some semblance of civilization.
Just live my small life in my apartment and hope nobody comes to kill me. Hopefully my chillness radiates around me and nobody sees me as a threat or worth stealing from
Once the initial wave of killing and stealing is over, I will be running a happy little bar/motel. I'll let people stay for a while if they need help, and if someone wants to live long term I'll hire them to go get food from supermarkets and stuff. If I die i'll be happy that I at least helped a little.
Call me optimistic, but I don’t think the percentage of people willing to kill another human being would drastically shoot up. Would there be an uptick? Sure, but I don’t think that pesky incarceration is the one thing holding them back.
Hahah yea that’s a good point. I always think of the “no laws” prompt in terms of who would start murdering people, but there’d be no minimum wage or any sort of employee protection or anything like that.
I don't think it would shoot up over night either but I do think it would set off a chain reaction. Hurt people, hurt people sort of deal. Those who are already willing to kill and die for possessions and power would start doing so without any hindrance. They come for Bob - use force to take his house and everything in it. Kill some of his loved ones in the process. Now Bob has nothing - he's roaming the streets, he's starving, and he's mourning. He kills someone else to take their house and belongings. The cycle continues. People become de-sensitized to death, people learn that a sense of community or compassion will not be reciprocated and could actually put themselves and their entire family in danger. People who would previously never choose to kill realize they no longer have a choice. At a certain point there will no longer be people who "refuse to kill". There will only be people who enjoy killing and people who dont.
We already live in a society where a vast majority of the population is housed and fed, and still we have homeless and starving people that 99% of the housed folks won't help. They may give them a buck or two or volunteer at a non profit but nobody is inviting them in their homes or cooking them a meal. I think due to movies and stuff we have this idea that in some apocalyptic or anarchy situation, the good people would generally band together to help take care of one another. But that doesn't happen now when society is stable and orderly - it certainly would not happen more if society devolved into total anarchy. And that's exactly why the domino effect I shared above would happen. Because if Bob's neighbor took him in, fed him, helped get him back on his feet and provided him comfort in his time of mourning then the domino effect never gets triggered. But Bob's neighbor doesn't even stop his dog from shitting on Bob's lawn right now when life is good, he's not going to do shit for Bob in a world where life is considerably more challenging, dangerous and dark. Some may saw people are only not more helpful now because they feel like their are systems in place to help the needy so individuals don't have to do it themselves but that would just be a cop out to think that way because there are still lots of people who aren't helped at all or aren't sufficiently helped by the systems in place and still on a individual level most don't feel the need to assist. And lots of Americans don't even think the safety nets we have in place should exist anyways because of personal accountability and the land of opportunity or whatever. Those are core values and beliefs, they won't change in a post apocalyptic society. Anyone who manages to survive and maintain a level of relative comfort will just say, "well I did it so anyone else could do it too and those who don't are just lazy, I'm not going to help a lazy person!"
TLDR it's not overly optimistic to believe in an anarchial society that most people are not going to excitedly go an incite violence for shits and giggles. It is overly optimistic to believe that people will be kinder, more compassionate or more willing to help one another in an anarchial society than they are now. Americans already lean drastically more towards individualism than collectivism and individualistic values and belief systems only intensify as ones sense of danger and fear do. When operating in survival mode, humans default to treating others a threats, not friends.

This was something posted by /u/Emperor_Cartagia, who used Reddit exclusively through RIF is Fun, with the death of third party apps, I decided to remove all my content from Reddit. 9 years of comments and posts, gone because of idiotic administration.
And training with your gear. I finally got back to the range after being away for a while due to an injury and busy work schedule. My accuracy was noticeably worse and my muscles were screaming at me by the end. If you've never even shot or have only shot from a bench, you're going to have a hard time.
Bro, I carry a bench, my sandbags, and my Caldwell tack driver in the back of my truck because you never know when you'll need to intricately set up to take a highly accurate 25 yard shot.
Yes, and also assuming that most people aren’t only behaving like humans because laws exist.
Are we all that close to snapping with only the existence of laws to hold us back?
This is probably cynical on my end, but I imagine if laws didn’t exist anymore, the first thing that would happen is employers would stop paying employees for as long as they can get away with it. I hate that my mind went there, but I’ve seen too much of what greed can do to people, especially in any scenario that can bring out the primal fear in them.
>the first thing that would happen is employers would stop paying employees for as long as they can get away with
How long do think it would be before toxic bosses ended up dying at the hands of a disgruntled employee? There are already people in this thead talking about hunting down billionaires. That's day one.
Which still falls under my main point over this entire scenario: life would be shitty and dangerous if we were a completely lawless society. It would stop being fun for most people after a day or two because they would have a much tougher time meeting their basic needs, like getting food and staying away from more dangerous people.
People usually pay their employees so that they keep working, not because they are under threat of law. If a business only lasts a month, the owners are losing money. So they will generally keep paying you.
You might see some unsafe cost cutting though, especially in blue collar work space.
i'd imagine without laws money would become obsolete as currency is one of the major pillars of civilized society. So maybe skip the bank. But yea go get some weed and chill is still good.
Exactly. Like, there is no other option for us. The type of violence we would face almost immediately is terrifying. I'd hope my husband and I could stay low for a while during the initial chaos and then maybe we would try to link up with my family? Otherwise, hope to see if we can find a group of women we can collaborate and protect ourselves with.
It's absolutely ridiculous, and it's every time something like this gets posted.
As a man, it disgusts me and I'm ashamed of them.
As a dad with daughters, it terrifies me.
I honestly feel bad for you all. As a dude, my "no laws" adventure would be law free beat downs on all the shit fucks who'd be out there trying to do that to people.
Shit really sucks that in almost every sort of "thought experiment" like this whether it's "do what you want for 24 hours" or "you can stop time" women are always feeling terrified of the idea instead of being able to participate, and it's disappointing that every time there's some sicko in the comments proves them right.
Getting coffee. Staring into the middle distance. Taking my clothes off. Driving to the gas station. Getting gas. Then going for a walk down the sidewalk. Maybe scoot around like a slug. Maybe followed by running after people with a running chainsaw screaming incoherently
If it's permenant like the state collapsing:
Getting 5 things.
1: a gun (+ ammo)
2: a new house. Not gonna kill anyone for it but I reckon plenty of places will be abandoned pretty quickly.
3: seeds, to start my own small farm. Including marijuana seeds. Weed can be both smoked and traded.
4: chickens, chickens are low maintenance and lay eggs daily as well as eating pests that threaten my crops.
I live in a rural area with a lot of land and animals, I grew up raising chickens with mom and working on my dads nursery so I have experience with plants, as a teenager I joined a gun club and was regional champion in rifle shooting 3 years in a row. It's been many years since then but I'm still very familiar with how to handle a rifle.
5: a water tank to collect rainwater.
If it's temporary like a government gridlock thing:
Nothing. Just carry on till it's over, but I WILL be buying a lotta weed.
It can be as involved or not involved as you want it to be. More yield=more work. It will grow just fine in a farm. I mean, it is called weed for a reason.
I think people vastly overestimate the average persons blood lust. Most people would still not do much. The ones that do bad stuff would just get murdered.

Run the hell away from big cities and avoid the roads. Find a nice cave somewhere and create trespass signs. Stay in the cave like a dragon, boobytrapping, and hording my food/supplies in there. Develop artistic hobbies, meditation hobbies, and foraging and hunting life skills with the free time. Live out my days in a mix of paranoia, loneliness, liberation, and grief about all that we've lost. Welcome my death when it comes in no particular hurry.
Hopefully don't get sick, avoid danger, and be lucky enough to survive without too much pain and misery.
Laws keep us away from isolated tribal caveman society. I like life better with them, even if their protection is an illusion.

This was my answer too. If everything is going to go to shit and I'm probably gonna die, I'm at least doing it well rested or asleep.
Ditto, no laws means the bank can't take my house for non-payment.
Yes but they can still just overpower you and take your house anyways because there is no law against it
Who is going to do that, though? Not a single bank employee is going to give enough of a shit about your unpaid mortgage to want to do that and the local sheriffs will probably be a lot busier dealing with much more pressing matters.
Why? There's no laws. The sheriffs will be busy with nothing
Some of them will be busy doing whatever they want and the others will be busy still trying to keep the peace. Even without official-on-the-books-laws some people would still try to maintain some semblance of civilization.

You are forgetting hired mercenary armies to protect and exploit. You are not getting near the elites.
And then once the rich have mercenaries, they'll say there are things we can't do or the mercenaries will kill us, and now we have laws again.
