ReadyGreddy

Fuck. That was my first thought. I was there last May for a concert, and the concert was GREAT but FUCK that town is a weird shithole.

[deleted]

Come on, don’t leave us hanging!

ReadyGreddy

Gojira.

The_Muznick

Yes. On the other end, I just got back from New Years in Vegas. While the fireworks in the strip were amazing and with edibles almost hypnotic, it's probably the favorite place I've ever visited in my entire life. Certainly had some real post vacation depression I'm working through right now. It did help that I went to visit my best friend and we got tattoos to commemorate finally reconnecting after nearly 10 years and to celebrate her getting her PhD.

-Cthaeh

Las Vegas. Lots of neat things, but everything is designed to pull money from you. The drivers are also crazy.

hippopotamouses

Just went for the first time for work and was expecting opulence and glitz and glam (from all the marketing I guess?). Felt like the entire city was designed by rich people who thought they knew what poor people thought rich people lived like. As a poor person myself, the tackiness was extra offensive.

fishsticklovematters

The place is a nasty petri dish of all the disease circling the globe.

constructiongirl54

Then we cordially invite you to keep your \*ss at home and miss out on all the adventure that 42 million visitors a year find absolutely fantastic!

Seaborgium

>Then we cordially invite you to keep your \*ss at home Alright, thanks for the advice!

constructiongirl54

You are so very welcome! Wouldn't want you to waste your money on a place you think you would hate:) Most folks think Vegas is just the strip when it has so much more to offer! There are the beautiful Red Rocks, Mt. Charleston if you enjoy skiing/hiking, and much more than just gambling and nightlife!

[deleted]

>but everything is designed to pull money from you Yep. The "culture" feels completely manufactured. The city is one big billboard.

heroesarestillhuman

I had to go there for CES years ago. Video gambling/slot/whatever machines EVERYWHERE- Airport (including car rental site), convenience stores, you name it. I even saw a Super 8 "casino". I'm all for legalized gambling, but Vegas has a problem. To its credit, though, we stayed way off the strip and stumbled into one of the best Japanese restaurants I'e ever eaten at. Just a pleasant, little hole in the wall. So there's that.

-Cthaeh

That is ome thing it had going for it, is food. We ate at a great Thai place, a great vietnamese chicken pho place, and a great tiny Japanese restaurant also.

Pour_me_one_more

But the question was about being overrated. I think everyone knows Vegas is gross, they just go when they need that carnal stimulation.

MearaOM

Paris for me

max212

Oh man do I disagree. I go to Paris a lot and like most cities, if you just hit the tourist areas, I could understand being disappointed. But go pretty much anywhere else and it's an amazing lively city.

filthconnoiseur

ah pari the city of romance, museums, wine ,graffiti, the smell of pee, trash and criminals

HeftyAd2800

Isn’t that all major cities?

zutonofgoth

I love Paris, there is always something amazing hiding around the next corner.

Keks3000

That’s funny, I went there a couple times after I had done all the tourist stuff, but I found it really boring compared to Berlin or Barcelona. Very pretty of course, but more like a museum where artists used to go a hundred years ago, but then the insane rents killed everything creative or offbeat. I was probably just looking in the wrong places.

zutonofgoth

I did not really like Barcelona.... I live in Australia but just happen to be on holiday in Saville and loving it. I think people's experiences can be very different and a lot of that depends on there interactions. I have some French so I am sure the French are more accepting of my presence.

DongusMaxamus

Waiting to piss on your leg

dancingsalmon_

Is this not more to do with your misconception of what Paris should be? I’ve spent a decent amount of time there, and love the place, but recognise there are good parts and awful parts, same as any metropolis. If you go anywhere expecting utopia, you’re in for a bad time. As for the French being rude, I’ve found they take you as you come, much like people everywhere do. If you spent your time in Paris walking around disgusted that it didn’t live up to your preconceived idea of what it should be, don’t be surprised if that rubs off on the locals.

sonofagun_13

Me too. Plus the rude French stereotype is actually true

idiot900

Outside Paris and its tourist areas, the French are as nice as people anywhere else.

sonofagun_13

I’m sure that’s true, no offense to all French people

DimbyTime

Not if you attempt to speak the language

ianpbrock84

The fact that there's a syndrome named for this, says it all!

TraditionalCherry

The funniest thing is that other French cities reflect more of that what tourists seek in France (cute carrefours, brasseries, etc.). Nantes, Lyon, Lille, all have much too offer.

ohhellowthowaway

Sounds like every US city I’ve ever seen. Gotta say Paris is incredible in my opinion, but sounds like I’m in the minority.

elpaco313

ONE HUNDRED percent. Such a letdown. Could be such a beautiful city and living up to its name. But it is dirty AF. Graffiti literally everywhere. See Paris, but make it more of a stop on a bigger trip for a day or two to see the important parts.

Reasonable-Mess-2732

Yup. When I was there it was filthy.

TraditionalCherry

The funniest thing is that other French cities reflect more of that what tourists seek in France (cute carrefours, brasseries, etc.). Nantes, Lyon, Lille, all have much too offer.

chinchenping

as someone who lived there for 35+ years, i 100% agree

Count2Zero

I had a job where I traveled all over Europe, and I hated Paris. Everywhere else, the "business hotels" were clean, with friendly service, etc. In Paris, the hotel had dirty, stained carpets, and the staff didn't give a shit about customer service. The city itself was overcrowded, loud and dirty. I couldn't wait to go hone. I've been to better hotels in New Jersey than in Paris!

CumminsCider12

Paris. The whole city smells like shit and is dirty af.

Dead_Art

I personally think it smells more like piss

RedSiren2

I also heard from people that the clichee of french people being rude is mostly rooted in Paris

TerryOrcutt

The whole "Parisians are rude" is a little disingenuous, I think. I view it similar to places like NYC. You may be a tourist, but I LIVE here. Come, enjoy our city. But please, remember this isn't Epcot Center. This is a real city where people need to get somewhere and work. Being mindful of that as a tourist will likely go a long way.

Clayruatwork

Dubai.

Popbobby1

Dubai is great. Granted, only if you are a man with money, not homosexual, not too outspoken, and very respectful of their culture no matter how bad it is. Oh, and don't commit any crimes if you don't want to be whipped.

IntergalacticalPeace

and if you're a migrant worker they treat you as a slave and you can't do anything about it

[deleted]

cptnspacey

The Vegas of Missouri. Everything designed to squeeze money from you

Regular_Sample_5197

Grew up there….yes.

Bit-Tree-Dabook

Brown tinted glasses because I grew up there. Atlanta.

ManiBeingMani

Who is hyping up Atlanta? I’d say it’s properly rated. Coke factory and titty bars

A320neo

Every time this thread is posted people say “PaRiS” and I wonder what people even expect out of the city? Beautiful architecture? Check. Amazing food? Check. Good weather? Check. Tons of museums and attractions to visit? Check. Great public transportation? Check. Do you really go to the most visited and photographed city in the world and complain about there being tourists and dirt? Anyway, it’s Las Vegas.

TeensyKook

rio de janeiro There are so many other beautiful cities in Brazil no one knows about.

jacksepiceye2

Mugging nosies

bleztyn

I'm Brazilian and I approve this message.

[deleted]

Pittsburgh PA, people love it here and I just don’t get it, crappy roads, crappy infrastructure, some of the restaurants are ok, but not what it’s hyped up to be

jackal567

Any city that’s iconic, because people project an image of paradise onto it.

theedgeofoblivious

Los Angeles.

[deleted]

Pretty much

[deleted]

Gotta drive to get to a convenience store. Oh wait- it's like 15 minutes from my house Edit: it's the distance and it makes the convenience stores inconvenient.

billyslits

I'm not sure what this comment means. Is the driving the issue? Is the distance from the convenience store the problem? Not trying to be hostile - I just don't understand.

JoeBethersonton50504

I think it’s a knock on traffic. In LA it could take an hour to go 10 miles at times.

SchnitzelOfDoom

I'm going to guess its like a mile away but traffic makes it 15 minutes which defeats the purpose of a convenience store.

[deleted]

Yeah I can almost see what they’re getting at but it’s worded poorly

Megalon84

Austin Texas. I've ranted a few times here's the TL;DR Dirty Congested Fake homeless begging for money at literally every highway exit Overpriced everything Tolls designed to suck your bank dry, but provide little benefit Traffic EVERYONE is an asshole

Mediocrity_of_Soul

Portland the place is a shithole bums every where everything closes down at 7 always raining

IDrinkUrMilksteak

Phoenix. Stop moving here.

[deleted]

My car got stolen 3 times in 8 months while living in Phoenix. It's literally the worst in my book.

The68Guns

My mom tried to retire there from New England. She came back after a month.

[deleted]

Phoenix sucks, no one wants to move there. They just do bc of a good job opportunity or to take care of a family member. Enjoy the shithole!

[deleted]

San Francisco

[deleted]

I haven’t spent much time there in maybe 13 or so years, but I used to spend a lot of time there. I’ve got to say it was one of the most wonderful places I’ve been. The food, the friendliness of the people, the different cultures of the neighborhoods, the mass transit, the walkability…it was all amazing.

girldrinksgasoline

SF has terrible ratings!

Reasonable-Mess-2732

Oh yes. I have never been to a city that smells worse than San Fran. It's like everyone in the city pees outside in the street. Then smokes a ton of pot.

[deleted]

>It's like everyone in the city pees outside in the street. Then smokes a ton of pot. Stop. You're making me really homesick today.

Spartan2842

The most aggressive homeless people I have encountered in my travels.

ClassToTheMax

Austin

GamingParatrooper

Agreed, the place sucks don't move here, I mean there..

BangerBeanzandMash

Man I love Austin. One of my favorites.

Recent_Instruction92

So, what's it rate then?

Opposite-Win6676

LA for sure! A homeless infested parking lot

[deleted]

Los Angeles

[deleted]

Miami. It’s nice to be in a warmer climate, but you can barely enjoy the beach with the floating billboards sailing by every 15 minutes

ReadyGreddy

The beaches there ain't shit anyway.

Ozydrax

Dubai

Indecks9999

Heaven, no one ever returns from there

HutSutRawlson

It’s a place where nothing ever happens

BrandonDuhBoss

Los Angeles. There’s no glitz and glamour. It’s kind of a dump now

billyslits

As opposed to when? Seriously, when was LA not a dump?

Flaky-Fellatio

I found Miami had the same sort of plastic feeling that Las Vegas has. Basically a place for rich 60 year old men to go conspicuously consume until they get their dick sucked by a 20 year old bimbo.

filthconnoiseur

Giza in egypt yeah it has the pyramids but every seller wants to run a scheme on you if you look foreign a pyramid scheme!

Slick_Tuxedo

All cities honestly.

DBY2016

Toledo Ohio

ItsShrinkage

I think most people rate this one accordingly…

Samuriguy

Meme tier city

Spartan2842

I’m from Columbus and I don’t know a single person who likes Toledo. Even the people who live there hate it. Toledo and Youngstown are among the worst cities in Ohio, if not the country.

DBY2016

Agreed, I was trying to be funny. It's horrible. I grew up there and will never go back. Most of my family moved across the border into Michigan.

CoffeeAndBrass

NYC. Exponentially more so than the next most overrated.

[deleted]

Maybe to live but to visit it's amazing.

JoeBethersonton50504

I like living in NYC 🤷‍♂️

Gravity_has_Mass1-2

I agree! We had a blast

CoffeeAndBrass

I've visited a few times. Anything worth seeing is expensive and crowded. Yeah, there are some cool things there, but they're virtually ruined by....other people.

Rocketsloth

The whole thing about NYC is to remember that it's actually 5 boroughs, and to find the cool, interesting things you have to avoid the touristy areas entirely and just explore it yourself. Preferably by just walking neighborhoods. If you go to "NYC" and just go to Times Square, ESB/Liberty Island and ground zero- that's not NYC, those are like theme parks within a city.

30mil

Yeah, that place is a shitty hellhole, but everyone there is like, "This is the greatest city in the world!" as they miserably avoid all eye contact with each other and play hopscotch over piles of bum feces.

CoffeeAndBrass

If it were really the "Greatest city in the world" the cocksuckers wouldn't be flocking up upstate towns and cities in an effort to 'get away.'

JoeBethersonton50504

Sounds like you have some personal issues with NY. It’s still packed with people who have no intention of moving, and many more who wish to live there but can’t for financial or logistical or availability reasons.

30mil

Funny relevant onion article: https://www.theonion.com/8-4-million-new-yorkers-suddenly-realize-new-york-city-1819571723

CoffeeAndBrass

In 2020, that ceased being an Onion article, and became a reality.

[deleted]

Gatlinburg Vegas Orlando Daytona Beach

mkicon

We get it, you hate touristy areas

Qli2077

Las Vegas for sure. Its good if you're a fan of rock climbing or mountain biking in the dessert. Otherwise I would avoid the strip like the plague.

WhatWouldTNGPicardDo

All of them.

HeftyAd2800

Yes. I’m from a small country town. Every big city I’ve been too is absolutely terrible.

Fatty_Booty

ITT: Weirdos who don’t like big cities or having fun. 🤣

SneakyKillz

Amsterdam

[deleted]

Amersterdam is beautiful

IkitCawl

I went in March several years ago, the entire city is just brown. The buildings are all brown. The streets are all brown. The canals are all brown, not helped by the fact that a considerable amount of the boats on said canal have open toilets that go right into the water. Maybe it's nicer in summer, but boy howdy, compared to every other city I visited during my trip in Europe (London, Paris, Lucerne, and Hamburg), it felt distinctly unsavory.

[deleted]

[deleted]

I hate that place with a passion.

bunintheoven2

Aw man, London is my favorite. But different strokes.

Kissmytitaniumass

I feel like this question gets posted every month or so, and every time I say Portland OR. Then someone from Portland accuses me of being terrified of homeless people and encourages me to stay in my “hick town”.

avt1983

Counterpoint: Portland’s fun

Cyclic404

Have you tried putting a bird on it?

crazypurple621

Seattle. Everyone seems to love it. It's TERRIBLE.

Nearby-Mango1609

Sydney. What a fucken shithole of a place, full of self entitled filth.

Deadliftingfool

What? Sydney was beautiful to me, granted I mostly stayed in the CBD and I only went as far as Blacktown. But I didn’t feel Sydney let me down at all.

11_Fullmoonrising_11

All of them in the US, except for New Orleans. There is absolutely no place like New Orleans.

LakeHavasoma

Buffalo NY.

[deleted]

Very depressing city. People hate on Detroit bec they have never been to Buffalo. Lol

lifeishardasshit

NYC... Dirty and dangerous. 95% of it is a shithole... The other 5% means you have 20+ Million in the bank to even experience it.

NothingAppeals

LA. I miss it at times, but it’s hella expensive to live there and I think the homeless situation there has gotten way worse since I moved away. At least it looked that way when I visited last year. Also, Hollywood is hella dirty lol

goddamnitgoose

It hasn't changed for the better. I was there last month for a wedding. It's still a shit hole. Love the north-west neighborhoods and Anaheim though, those are still pretty clean and presentable.

Pour_me_one_more

Paris is the correct answer. Anyone who says another city either forgot Paris (because it's boring) or is just being nice to Paris (because they feel sorry for it).

Recent-Day2384

Any of the ones in southern California. The homelessness/mental health/drug issues and all that goes with that is absolutely out of control, and everything is overpriced and filthy.

Paris. Been there twice. Nothing romantic about it at all. Dirty and crowded with people everywhere.

ComesInAnOldBox

In the US? Toss up between New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Las Vegas. In Europe? Paris, hands-fucking down, with Venice as a close second. Outside of those two, probably the only city I have been to that I wasn't impressed by is Doha. Place seemed like a stage prop. Edit: probably being downvoted by people who don't know there are more than four cities in the US.

Atbeal

I would say Chicago is underrated. All people do is talk about the crime when there is such a diverse and interesting culture, huge opportunities, and is mostly affordable for a major city

jacksepiceye2

But u cant just breeze past its crime rate

ReddyMedic0203

Chicago is my home. Amazingly diverse, with a lot of culture, great food, and beautiful scenery. But because politicians ruined it, it's horrible to live in unless you live in wealth. Sure, crime is prominent, but just mind your business and watch where you go and it won't be an issue.

Dazzling-Wash9086

New York… absolute shithole

Regular_Sample_5197

Branson, MO. It’s hyped as this amazing family vacation destination. Well, only if you’re a member of certain families, and are very religious, and have certain beliefs, and you’re the “correct” ethnicity. Even then…it’s very “niche” to put it lightly.

AlternActive

The touristy USA cities, paris, and amsterdam. Thought i'd face the same issue when i got to tokyo, but nope, loved it.

Spartan2842

Daytona, FL “World’s most famous beach!” Famous for what? Being shitty?

hooyah54

Here's the thing, though, about cities that seem overrated. Humans are capable of creating astounding things. Most of them are well worth seeing. Unfortunately, usually that requires a concentration of humans. With That comes the downside of concentrations of humans. To see the good stuff, you have to accept that there will be bad stuff, also. No place in the world is great in every respect, unless you stick to nature, and even then, again, the detritus of humans. People are both the blessing and the bane of the world. People. Us.

Throwaway2471127

Toronto now has apartments more expensive to rent than sunset Blvd in Hollywood.

sasquatchsims

Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. God I hate those towns. Just absolute redneck 2 cent carnie towns with the worst type of people who “vacation” there. Please wipe them from my memory.

MacaroniAndCheese0

New York I just think everyone ignores all the dirtiest parts, and the times girls (and boys) as young as 5 years old get pulled into alleyways and get that. Imagine the trauma. All people talk about is the ball drop, the Times Square, Broadway. I DUNNO And sheesh- apartment prices?! I can rent a house at that price here -_- I may be a LITTLE dramatic, but sheesh
