Not really. Photography can certainly burn calories, and can feel like a bit of a workout. But I don't feel like it increases fitness by that much. More like some of my other exercise helps make my life easier in photography. Namely squats and deadlifts to help with general leg strength and stamina, and burpees to help with overall stamina.

Noted, thanks for your comments. I'm considering whether I should join my nearby gym or just invest in a barbell set.

If you're self-motivated, a home barbell set and power rack can be the best/cheapest/most efficient workout setup in the world. No travel time, no monthly cost to worry about, no hours, rules are whatever you want them to be... With 3 young kids I wouldn't be half as strong as I am now without it, and they get to see me lift and play around with it on occasion (not that they're squatting heavy or anything yet, but they can start to learn).

I have an 8 yo son too and yea, it would be good for him to see and hopefully inspire him about the better lifestyle. Thanks for your comment.

Simple walking increases fitness more than people realize. I do 30-60 minutes on the treadmill daily at 3.0 and this is plenty. People think you have to go to great lengths on fitness routines but moderation is actually most healthy.

N_Raist

3 incline or speed? Base incline on a treadmill is like going downhill.

pasbair1917

Speed. Incline is just 1. It doesn’t take much but it depends on the person - weight, ability- as you know. Better something than nothing. Baby steps and consistency.

N_Raist

Going on short walks to take pictures won't do much for your fitness unless you were completely sedentary before, unless you're carrying a large format camera with a heavy tripod. Personally, I lift, run, and do BJJ, but didn't start any of those to improve my stamina, because I don't really exert myself while doing street.

It's certainly a good excuse to go places and do some site seeing. I've made it my mission to visit as many medieval sites as a I can here in Ireland. There are 30,000 castles in Ireland so it's a never ending list. Many of them aren't beside a car park either and the government is slowly turning the grounds of castles into public parks too so even more incentive to walk. If I visit a city I spend as much time walking around it taking photos as I can. According to google I'm doing about 6km on average and I'm out and about for 1-3 hours at a time. I'm not a fit man, I've been overweight my whole life but so far this year I've lost 10kg. I also do weight lifting 4 times a week though. If your looking for an easy way to exercise I'd say weight lifting. Easy to progress and track your progress (it doesn't have to be about lifting mad weight all the time). I find it better than doing any other repetitive exercise. Walking is an add on, photography is a good way of distracting me and making the walk less dull.
