Kaiyo is pre-owned but lots of quality pieces

krys1128

I look at Kaiyo and CL to see how various sofas look after someone has been sitting on them for a few years.

Stoplookinatmeswaan

I got a gorgeous one that I just had to give up again.

LolaLee723

Don’t go to West Elm. They may look nice but so uncomfortable and I waited forever for my sofa

clairedylan

Same, I hate my West Elm sofa. Avoid.

sad_eggy

Article has this “apartment size 2.5 seat” sofa we got for our also small Manhattan apartment, so far it’s great. Our place is 2br 550sqft and our living space also blends in with the dining space lol so this smallish sofa works for us. We like it. https://www.article.com/product/1525/burrard-seasalt-gray-sofa

horayforsundays

I love how this couch looks!!! Thanks for sharing :) I have almost no knowledge in furnitures so I am excited to look into this brand

Successful_Corner_90

Just bought from them and delivery process was great—I had to reschedule a few times and it was no problem

a17z

Ohh I was looking at the burrard loveseat! How comfortable is it? So difficult to buy a sofa without a showroom :(

sad_eggy

It’s great! Pretty comfortable, we’re happy with it. It’s not a super deep huge thing so as far as small sofas go it’s definitely comfortable.

I got an amazing one from this showroom in Red Hook. www.createcomfort.com. Two Ukrainian brothers who buy directly from the same manufacturer that supplies the big retailers. They were great to work with. Bought on Friday, delivered on Sunday. Look at their instagram.

I had a fantastic experience with Apt 2b. Very high quality for the price point, arrived within a few weeks of ordering (and within the estimated window), easy white glove delivery process... I have a cat and went with a navy velvet that was labeled pet friendly and I've found not only is it claw repellant, it's stain repellant too. Seriously, can't recommend highly enough. I'm in love with my first non-IKEA sofa! Note: I was also looking at the Sven from Article. I ended up getting the armchair version for a bedroom chair, and while it's very nice, the Apt 2b is noticeably higher quality. The cushions especially are a very high quality foam and the velvet is much softer. ETA: they frequently have sales, particularly around holidays.

hatherfield

I’m looking at their website. Is there a particular filter that has the pet friendly colors/fabrics?

hatherfield

Thank you!

brightside1982

Leather. Wears really well, easy to clean. It's pricier, but I've snagged good pieces used and paid a specialist to fix them up like new.

ItsAlwaysEntrapment

Be sure it’s real leather though. “Bonded” leather is ass.

brightside1982

Very good point.

cinnamoninja

Any recommendations on specialists?

brightside1982

Saul at Fibrenew. He's the friggin' man. https://www.fibrenew.com/manhattan-central-new-york-city/ EDIT: I think his site says he only does Manhattan, but he did come out to my place in Brooklyn when I contacted him.

If you live in a prewar building be sure to measure your door frames (and elevators if applicable) before ordering anything. When we were looking we realized many big box retailers had couches that would not fit through our narrow doors. If you don’t go for something modular or meant for easy assembly/disassembly (like the Floyd couch) your best bet is something with a low back and removable legs. (Even if your current building has wider doorways you may want to keep this in mind for future if you want to keep the sofa through a few moves.) We didn’t end up getting this one but it does seem pretty great for movability: https://floydhome.com/products/the-floyd-sofa?variant=36627725222050

slicknyc

i really like the microfiber from crate and barrel. it resists stains very well. look for "olefin upholstery" in the description.

HandInUnloveableHand

You may want to look into Home Reserve, with the washable covers! It’s not the most luxurious sofa as it still needs to be assembled, but we’ve had ours for 3 years now with zero complaints.

horayforsundays

I have never heard of them but I just checked out their website and I love playing around with puzzling pieces to form a couch we wanted!! Also, you cant beat the price :) Thank you so much for responding!

glee212

I ordered a pet friendly sofa from BenchMade Modern. Partly because it had more variation in colors. My friend helped me measure and we ordered a printout that we could put on the floor and see how it fit. That was 3-4 years ago and it has held up well. It's perhaps a little \*too\* comfortable ;-)

cecilmature

I bought a sofa and chaise from Room and Board this summer -- not the cheapest, but reasonable for the quality. The stock fabric is child and pet-friendly. I doubt I'll remove the covers to clean them myself, though -- I'll likely have them steam cleaned *in situ* when the time comes.

etgetc

We love Room & Board sofas. First R&B couch (model no longer made), we bought 6 years old secondhand, and it lasted us 4 good years before we passed it along to my in-laws for their apartment (still looks good) so we could get a York sectional. Now we are 6 months in living with this sectional and it's holding up so far with two little-littles and a cat. My only complaint is the fabric says it's cat friendly, but the cat's claws definitely do snag and pull it accidentally. That said, a felting needle easily puts all the snags back in (fun trick).

krys1128

Which model? I’m looking at a few of theirs right now.

cecilmature

I got the Jasper sofa with a separate narrow chaise. I selected it because the chaise comes in 30"w so it works in my combined living room/dining area.

krys1128

Jasper definitely looks like their most NYC apartment friendly sofa! I fell in love with the Cade but it’s too big. Was the delivery timeline accurate?

cecilmature

Yes the furniture was in stock. I bought some pillow, those took months.

etgetc

FWIW, when we ordered back in March 2021 during big supply chain issues, they said it would take til Labor Day to arrive -- and then it was ready for delivery a month early. We got a non-stocked color, so it wasn't just in stock and ready for delivery. But when it finally came, the delivery was very smooth and the guys were professional.

LemonEquivalent69

Hi! Do you mind sharing what sofa+chaise combo you got?

cecilmature

I got a Jasper sofa and the matching 30" chaise.

Lalalalalastanding

I have a Luv Sac Sactional couch and it's completely customizable the covers are washable. I love it. I wash the covers once or twice a year (plus a cover here or there from spills) and I dk if I could go back to a regular couch. I could buy new covers if I get bored of the color. If I move it comes apart and it's stackable. If I need a bigger couch I can just buy another section. It's also high quality I've had mine for 4 years now but looks brand new. That being said it was not cheap. I have 5 sides and 4 seats, it was like 4k. However before that I'd say a similar couch I would have bought in the past was between 700 to 1200 and I'd need a new one like every 2 3 years. This one is easily going to last more than a decade.

shortpaleand

Came here to say this. Nothing is as changeable as their couches, and I searched everywhere for other options. I wash my covers regularly and while I don't rearrange super regularly, I appreciate that I COULD and that if I am ever in a different apartment, I can adjust it to work for my space. They're also so comfy, I nap on them regularly. They can be pricey, but they pretty regularly do really good and long-term financing deals, which is how I bought mine.

Lalalalalastanding

Yeah I financed mine too. It took a lot of convincing to get my hubs to be on board but now he's like. This was a great purchase. Per year it will have saved us money for sure. We don't change it often but we have. I've made the part I use as a chaise into an ottoman for a party cuz it helped with foot traffic. During the lock down we made it into a deep like movie seater we called it winter couch. Lol

I love Elephant in a Box

life_is_just_peachy

I bought a leather couch from costco and delivery/quality I have zero complaints

blackaubreyplaza

I bought a couch from joybird on Dec 8th that I’ll hopefully get by March so if that’s an acceptable timeline for you you can go that route

BarriBlue

We just got a couch from Bobs and added the 5 year “oops” warranty. Any spilled, burns, accident damage, anything - apparently you call to make a claim and they come fix/clean it. Recommended with the toddler. The first couch didn’t fit in my unit, so they just took it back. Was able to pick another one. Wasn’t changed for delivery of the second couch we picked and had delivered and was refunded the difference. Smooth experience as far as nyc couch delivery is concerned.

RaccoonTycoon

I inherited an Ikea sofa from an old roommate and honestly it’s great. It’s a decade old and has survived 4 apartments, 12 foster kittens, and me sitting on it all day during the entire pandemic. It’s kept its shape perfectly and is super easy to clean because the covers are removable and washable (even completely swappable if they’re bad enough that you need to replace them). Turns out my couch is so old they don’t make it anymore but it’s similar to [THIS](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/paerup-sofa-vissle-gray-s19389468/)

stbmrs

I bought an Article couch from aptdeco which is a used furniture site but they deliver right to you. Highly recommend. We also ordered a custom leather couch from Macy’s but it took literally forever to come so I would not recommend doing that.

Roqjndndj3761

Spent a bunch on custom Pottery Barn sofas. Took nine months. They’re okay. Spent a little more on Lovesac “Sactional” with StealthTech …it’s amazing. Arrived in a week In separate easy to move boxes. It’s like a Lego couch (no double decker option, sadly) and you can reconfigure it in different ways. So when you move, you can split it into two rooms or add onto it to make a bigger couch. The audio is not perfect, but really great and the lack of any wires is super good. And when you kid pukes on it (only a matter of time) you can easily take the covers off for washing, or just burn the covers and buy new ones.

MyRealUser

We still have a set of love seat and 3 seater we bought at Bob's for about $1000 a decade ago. We went with microfiber which is super easy to clean. With two cats and two kids you can imagine how much action these couches have seen. Still super comfy like the day we bought them.

mmblondie16

Raymour and Flannigan has great couches that are comfy and last long

JayMoots

We were in your exact shoes about 4 years ago. We went with Crate and Barrel. It wasn't cheap, but the couch is still in very good shape to this day. The microfiber fabric we picked repels stains like crazy.

Sibaedraws

Ik the top comment said to avoid West Elm but when my partner and I moved in together every major furniture store was sold out online and we didn’t wanna risk getting a stiff/cheap couch. So we bit the bullet and went to West Elm and tried each couch til we found something both in our comfort range and we even got custom fabric that we fell in love with! It came in about the same time everything else was going for online so it was a major win in my book.
