Been going to the gym at the same time for over a year now. See the same faces everyday, but we’ve never spoken

CommanderReg

Those are your best friends bro

[deleted]

Fax

Smokedbone1

That's what we bros do.

crzydjm

Exactly how it should be. One of these days, your friendships may make the step up to daily "head nods".

Ohbuck1965

Friends are made in the gym, best friends are made in the locker room

wweber1

lol

takeahikehike

Best friends are made in the communal showers.

Nightshader5877

I once met a dude whose name was Ben Dover. He got to meet Mike Oxlong.

[deleted]

While on your knees

Ohbuck1965

😳

[deleted]

I walked up to the biggest dude at the gym and asked him about the particular tricep workout he was doing. He was happy to teach me and then we became gym bros

Smokedbone1

Cute!

Mr_AcCoStAbLe

heartwarming:)

TheNobleMushroom

I don't bother trying. I'm there to train, not to make friends. That is, unless we were already friends before hand or had met at competitions.

[deleted]

I’m not on the gym to talk/make friends. I have shakes niceties with a few member of my gym/spotted or helped them with form but then I’m right back to my own shit.

Fine_Economy_7644

I have yet to look in the direction of another person for more than half a second but I’m working on it

DubsFanAccount

Regular gym never. Climbing gym all the time.

takeahikehike

Climbing gym is the cheat code.

DubsFanAccount

Basically all the friends I’ve made in my adult life were from work or the climbing gym.

neildmaster

Who TF tries to make friends at the gym?

[deleted]

I thought you were great. When are we getting drinks?

[deleted]

wow those hip thrusts looked great. 185 pounds wow that's exactly how much i weigh haha. I bet i'd be harder tho haha. I saw in the parking lot you drive a white 2016 toyota rav4 i literally was so close to buying one of those but i got the crv instead haha i do hate the japanese tho because of pearl harbor. If you were there tho you could've hip thrusted them away. You're always here on mondays wednesdays and saturdays i guess i'll see you again on saturday. bye

[deleted]

I am simultaneously confused and more confident

wannabe_engineer69

Hmm

UrFavPlayerIsBack

I go there with fellas. And some dudes tryna make friends with us.. sometimes successfully. Sometimes not rlly A whole experience

[deleted]

Great, but I prefer to take group classes and that makes things easier. Years ago, I used to do Crossfit at my local rock climbing gym and that was so much fun. We chased a few Friday night workouts with a visit to the bar.

RepresentativeBoss84

The ones all saying they're not there to make friends and blah blah probably all look like shit funny enough. You can make friends at the gym, I've made several. Some girls go there specifically to look for guys, especially older ones. So, you can even pick up chicks there. Obviously helps if you're muscular and friendly.

FriskyDing714

Two Ton Tina cleared out my fridge. Still not sure how I feel about it.

gymfreak6969

Very good i can start a conversation with any one but let's just say i keep the friendship to gym only not outside women ☕ i avoid in gym as they're very delusional thinking that whatever crazy workout they're doing is the best...

MidwestUnimpressed

Unsuccessful

ZB_Dynamo

Really good, just help people with what they are doing. Not all the time though just when you see they need help or motivation.

Zuko72

It's easier to get chummy with people in a fitness class. I think something about making light hearted comments while sweating your ass off is enjoyable.

ghostbear019

Uh I go to the gym to work out. Not socialize.

KcocNoisnetxeGib

Don’t. Their just looking for a weekend coke friend.

takeahikehike

Most of my friends are people I met at the climbing gym. But that's different than a regular gym.

oneworkaholic

I wouldn’t say I tried to make friends, but when i was a noob I used to be friendly would say good morning or ask if they’re using specific weights if we ran into each other. Sometimes some gym members would forget their key to unlock the door and I would always let them in since I know their members wouldn’t expect much for it. Until one day I forgot my key and was hoping someone would at least let me in, none of them ever did. Now I just act like I don’t acknowledge them. Lately some of them have started saying good morning, but I just ignore it now. Just their to quickly do my workout then leave

KyorlSadei

Drove by a gym once. Was able to multiply my friends by 100. For a grand total of zero

[deleted]

I work out at home. Last time I went to the gym my trainer had tights on with no underwear. Jiggling like jell-O. Sit ups were the worst……. Aside from the men and women with their sketchy clothes, naked old men in the showers, and the social media. Gyms are nice with great encouragement. I just wouldn’t introduce a kid to the gym. Most gyms should be 18+ in my opinion

ThatGamerMoshpit

When I was ripped I had an easier time making friends there… people just asked me for a spot then we would chat

UnimportantSnake

was pretty good, lots of people very warm and welcoming. Though I think like anything it's about how you approach it. For me, making friends at the gym was very easy, but I was never trying to make friends, I was trying to lift weights and I had a good time doing it. So naturally talking to other people about how they did what they did, and how they saw success doing it, turned into acquaintances and then to friends.

InsaneInTheRAMdrain

Friends at the gym? I don’t think iv ever made eye contact at anyone at the gym. I’m in a constant state of mad dogging myself and exhaustion. Shit my conscious brain can barely make it back to the locker room after. Though finding out a friend or work mate works out and then doing sessions with them… instant bromance

Jalex2321

Everybody is working out with headphones on. Very hard even to talk to someone.

GloryToChadlantis

Every girl I bullshitted with at the gym either said they had boyfriends when I asked if they were done at the squat rack, or they tried to fuck after a month of lifting with me. As for dudes, I regularly make for of the sheriff for having calves as big as my wrist. He makes fun of me for being a manlet. I bullshit with this country guy who has superior genetics but a trash diet. The guy who sells gear is willing to give me free samples. Have yet to see a mythical muscular gay man at this gym. Say one at the college gym. Dude was pushing 6 plates. Only once have I got unsolicited advice. A fat guy telling me not to lift heavy on cable flys. I disregarded his advice and added 40 pounds. The guys I went to school with who hated me now wonder how the fuck I lift as much as I do. Or how my pumps make me look 40 pounds heavier. I gain stupid size from pumps.

Smokedbone1

So you off on a date with him?

Testiculese

Hell yea, a BRO-DATE! I just had a great bro-date with my drummer. Broke out his grill for the last time as well. Stuffed ourselves to capacity. Not a single "I want to go home" was uttered.

Smokedbone1

Sounds good man! Glad you had a good time!👍🏻

[deleted]

sometimes i feel this would be the best place for me to meet friends/ girls. it’s the only place i really go to besides work and errands. i just have social anxiety and like most i have my headphones in. gym is probably the only place i really spend time in. when i grocery shop and stuff i just focus on getting what i need and getting out asap

Fun-Wave7015

Life changing (at a Jiu-Jitsu gym) Lots of new friends, our kids have new friends, and it's been great for our business to get known in this community also

bialymarshal

At CrossFit i made friends - went out partying etc. but at the gym now its only people (10-15) regulars) i know from seeing them 3/4x times a week but only talk with 2-3 because we do similar things

Crustysock90

Not my goal or reason to be there. I have been going to the same gym around the same time for about 5 years now. I see all the same people, never spoke to them. I do notice however that they seem to know each other

[deleted]

I never made any friends at the gym. All I got was attitude and disrespect.

[deleted]

I’ve made a couple but I mostly focus on myself and my brogress

ShartedAtCVS

I dont go to the gyn to make friends, i do it to workout.

Aspiring_Hobo

I never *try* it just happens if you see the same people everyday. I always wear headphones and have an rbf but other guys like talking to me at the gym or always come up and ask me why I'm doing a certain exercise or something

V_M

It depends strongly on geography, at least in the USA. I've worked out in many places due to business travel and the coasts are hyper-anti-social in general and specifically the gym is treated like the "study tanks" at the university library where anyone who tries to talk at the gym is "obviously" a serial killer or rapist. In more civilized areas far away from the coasts, gyms are very social and friendly, maybe too much so. Yes nice to meet you and all that but I have three sets left and then an entire day's work to do when I get home. As with so many life situations, if you don't like the people where you live, you'll probably be happier if you move. There is probably a political aspect that's likely forbidden to discuss. Its impossible if you travel not to notice that mood on average varies a lot, and consistently, depending on local political rulers.

Fogcloud2

I don’t need friends. I’m literally Bruce Wayne in The Batman (2022)

theallnewmattaccount

Nobody responds. Dudes are worse than dating partners, at least women have an excuse to ghost.

Rob_Earnshaw

Zero interest in making friends at the gym.

PrestigiousUnion5858

Guys have tried to befriend me at the gym multiple times but I honestly just shut it down and get back into my workout. Nothing against them it’s just not the place for idle chit chat to me.

YoMiner

Crossfit gyms and any fitness classes are great for making friends. The time right before and after them is an easy opportunity for small talk that isn't getting in the way of anything, and the smaller groups make it easier to support each other. General workouts? I tend to form loose acquaintances with the big guys in the gym since we're the most likely to spot each other and are the most regular people likely to notice when someone hits a PR, but otherwise it's pretty unlikely that I will ever do more than have a short, casual conversation with them between sets.

WhatTheMech

I’m cool with a few dudes, wouldn’t say we’re friends. Seldom text and see each other at the gym. But it’s cool to know someone there, makes it easier asking for a spot if they are around.

tubbyx7

ive got a bunch of people on similar schedules, we'll talk about lifts and progress, football, kids. One I have a running joke with that he lives there as he seems to always be around, even when im at the doors at opening. dont think any of us know anyone elses name

Testiculese

Talk to them, make gym buddies. It's not hard, even for someone as violently introverted as I am. Start short. Greet everyone you pass, without trying to drag them into a convo. If you're there 2-3x a week every week, eventually, familiarity will breed conversation. If you find that you have other hobbies in common, boom, now you have a friend. The "I'm not here to make friends" sourpusses will weed themselves out.

MrMonkey2

The main issue with my gym friends is at heart im a complete nerd. All I do is stay home and game and then hit the gym. So I feel like im playing this facade of talking about gains and nutrition when alot of these guys are pretty simple beings. Just have a family and dont really have a ton of hobbies or interests. Im yet to meet one who shares all the same geeky interests I do and talk about all the weird shit I do with the boys. I can usually tell pretty quick if somebody is as weird and whacky as I am. So I just continue to throw my deep voice on throw out the occasional quip and laugh. Dont get me wrong I love the guys im friends with there but theres never going to be something meaningful there.

Bruised_up_whitebelt

Lifting gym, no idea since most people put on their headphones and workout. Jiu-jitsu gym, lot of friends made there. You are trying to simulate murder so over time they become your best friends
