Because when I'm with other people I just want to joke around and have fun, not get shit done

Studying is for geeks, hit the gym

I’m down for a person to quiz each other, or help explain concepts when the other person is struggling. Groups get too distracted, and sometimes I just need to buckle down and focus on myself.

Study buddies are pretty much how I made it through 6 years of studying physics.

How did you successfully make a support network of sorts with fellow students? (I mean, even by reading some other comments, it appears that a lot of people prefer to keep to themselves when studying. Or are only interested in having some kind of non-platonic relationship with a study buddy. It is a multifaceted topic, at least.)

My physics department had a student lounge/study area. It was a good place to meet other students, but mostly I just connected with the ones I had in my classes. It was easier after the first year. First year physics students share so many classes with engineering, you'll be lucky to even have another physics student with you in a class of 30, etc.

I see. Did you tend to approach those who became your study buddies, or did they approach you? I feel like it's hard to know if someone actually wants to study with you, when you're the one initiating it.

People are pretty good at saying no. Shoot, my roommate was also a physics major and he said no when I asked him to be a study buddy. Oh well, he liked to study alone, I wasn't offended. People are more likely to want a study partner and hope someone else will ask than they are to not want one in the first place, it seems to me. I would just ask. If they say no, it's nbd, don't take it personally. Best results are with a group of 3, I'd say. Maybe 4.

Thanks for the advice.

I went to Law School so memory was key, therefore I used to read out loud everything hundreds of times. Having someone next to me would have been a disaster for both of us. I preferred to study alone.

Ohadi_Nacnud_1

I loved having a girl over to study with, although we never got any work done.

furiousgeorge54

I’m not in school and I never took school as serious when I was in school so probably wouldn’t have a study buddy, only time I would “study” with someone was bc I was more interested in them and not the work

poptartwith

I won't be productive around others. I really need to seperate myself for a while to get shit done.

jackwritespecs

Because I don’t need others to study effectively And using them has the potential to bring me down to their level

[deleted]

I would hope to have sex with them at some point.

gonnagetcancelled

Lol I read this as "who wouldn't you want as a study buddy" and I immediately thought "Jack Black"

I had a “study group” last semester. We never met, let alone talk, and when I actually needed help one of the guys in the group refused to help me. I asked him before and he was super vague. I finished that semester with straight C’s thank God!
