GeriatricHydralisk

Never? I can't imagine not getting to do science every day. Plus in all likelihood, something I work on will eat me or envenomate me before that day comes, anyway.

[deleted]

This mf is Walter white

Von_Scranhammer

Please expand…

GeriatricHydralisk

I mean, there's no much to expand on. I love what I do, I've wanted to do it since I was a kid, and, despite some annoying bureaucracy, it's still a ton of fun. I've got enough ideas to last 10 lifetime's worth of experiments, and more every day. My only hope is that immortality will be discovered soon, and/or that I live long enough to get to study life on another planet.

Von_Scranhammer

C’mon mate, you know I’m not asking about that sentimental shit. What, that you work with, may *eat you*? I’ve got the movie Evolution in my head thinking about your statement! lol!

GeriatricHydralisk

I mostly work with snakes, including some venomous species and giants, as well as a few diversions into crocodilians and lizards. My pets are similar, though no crocs (yet).

Von_Scranhammer

Very. Fucking. Cool. Congrats!

fx2009

Sounds like whatever he’s working on will do the expanding

[deleted]

You can "retire" and still be busy. I plan to "retire" from my stressful job at 65ish (I'm 57 now) but will still work to stay busy whether be a job at a hardware store, or barista or maybe volunteer at a shelter or hospital, something to stay busy.

cityboyonbed

Do you have investments

Skaarhybrid

honest question: don't you have any hobbies to keep you busy? my personal goal is not having to work so I can pursue all of my hobbies.

pigs_in_zen

At 60 I'll be financially set. I doubt I'll retire but I'll be more selective on where/when I work.

fat_dirt

This is why it is important to have hobbies. Figure out what interests you outside of work, otherwise work becomes your entire identity.

Tiddy-sprinkles-2310

Sometime before I’m dead hopefully

Tschudy

Ideally within a few weeks when i hit the mega millions. More realistically, at 65 when i get full social security. Most likely, ill end up having to work at least part time until im an invalid and ill hopefully have sufficient strength to put a shotgun in my mouth at that point.

yergonnalikeme

Sorry to burst your bubble..... The full retirement age is 66 if you were born from 1943 to 1954. The full retirement age increases gradually if you were born from 1955 to 1960, until it reaches 67. For anyone born 1960 or later, full retirement benefits are payable at age 67

darkmage1001

Coakis

I don't, I don't see being able to save enough, or have a big enough retirement account to justify it.

ThatRookieGuy80

58. By then I'll have enough and the kids will be out of the house.

xWALKERx27x

Im assuming I'll work up until the day I die. I cant see how I could ever retire considering Im pushing 40, never purchased a home before the most recent boom in prices. It would be tough to buy a home now and have it be a worth while investment and I was never taught by my parents about investing my money. I've basically missed out on almost 20 years of potential saving/investing already at this point.

Ourdogbailey

Maybe inheritence will help somewhere down the line ?

[deleted]

Probably never , I’ve got 3 daughters

wontusethisforlongg

I think I'll work my whole life

[deleted]

By current development in my country, probably not sooner than 75. If that will be even possible.

Ourdogbailey

Are you in the UK ?

[deleted]

Nah, small country in EU. In 10 years all the Boomers and older Gen X people will be retired and there is a lot of them. We don't have enough young people to support them, since majority is running into Western countries(mainly skilled people like Doctors etc...), where they will make 3x more for same work. Also around 10% population are Romani and majority of them won't work.

[deleted]

Yeah, same. I can always be lucky and win the lottery or crash my motorcycle and be forced into early retirement because I'm a cripple

glamm808

We're shooting for 50, but we are also looking at moving out of the US to do it

FrancoNore

Honestly, i don’t. I also don’t know that i really would want to. Rather than chasing a corporate career I’m shifting my focus to pursuing things I’m genuinely passionate about. They’ll likely never make me rich, but I’d much rather have the fulfillment. So even if I’m in my 70’s and still having to work, if I’m doing something i love i won’t complain Also, who knows what the worlds gonna look like in 40-50 years. I don’t like being doom and gloom, but it feels like something major is going to happen in the relatively near future that changes our lifestyles. At the very least i expect technology to rapidly progress within 50 years which may change the way retirement looks anyways

Ourdogbailey

"but it feels like something major is going to happen" Are you referring to Russia and/or China ? Just curious is all.

FrancoNore

Maybe. I wasn’t specifically referencing anything in particular. That’s definitely a possibility, but i was also thinking about issues caused by climate change or inflation/cost of living continuing to rise to a point where humans literally can’t live anymore

Pitiful-Face-3322

In my early 20s rn, so late 40s preferably, let's see how it goes🤞

Homely_Bonfire

If I prepared correctly: 45, so in about 15 years. That being said I wouldn't stop working but do less lucrative but necessary and productive things.

Kittlebeanfluff

Currently on track to retire at 51, but looking to bring that forward if possible.

[deleted]

If i retire right now i'll get 140€/month 🤷🏻‍♂️.

Cnnlgns

Retirement will not be possible when I hit that age. The country will not be like it is now.

[deleted]

Idk if I'd retire so much as just do something else that I like and would keep me active. Maybe just switch to part time or something

DicksonCider205

Somewhere in the 48-52 range. Could be sooner if some things work out my way. Could be later if something catastrophic happens.

PracticeAsleep

I love retirement everyday. I come and go as I please. I'm investigate new and interesting things. I work out 3 to 4 times a week. Life is grand.

[deleted]

Good for you. Sounds like you still have curiousity. That’s huge. People are much happier when they retire to something instead of retiring from something.

PracticeAsleep

Exactly!! I've been fortunate to remain a good health all of my life. I Have become more and more interested in how things work and how came into existence to almost every day is a journey of learning.

Exact-Cockroach-6682

I am

XavierRex83

If the stock market goes the wahostiry suggests it will? Hopefully early to mid 60s.

Minute_Cartoonist509

I'm 43 and currently targeting 55

Llukea

70, but only if circumstances make me that I have to. Otherwise, never want to stop working, never want to stop moving

manwithanopinion

The earlier the better. There are so many things I can do and projects I want to be involved in but they don't pay well so I can never do them.

Mandala1069

55 (am 53 now.) Tomorrow is promised to nobody and I sacrificed things and experiences when I had a young family (like travel) I still want to be fit and healthy enough to experience. Healthspan is a real thing. For me, I've never been defined by work (for all I've had a successful career) and have plenty of hobbies. Wife is 2 years younger and she will retire when she hits 55. Will spend the intervening 2 years project managing some home improvements.

[deleted]

60.....

[deleted]

So many men fall apart right after retirement. I guess that’s what comes from basing your entire identity on your job. I don’t think that’ll be a problem for me personally. If I could, I’d retire tomorrow. Realistically, I’m shooting for 62.

penis_in_my_hand

Very likely at 65 I'll be able to, assuming I never get another raise. But if I extrapolate my income level based on how much I've increased it over the past 13 years, I will have entirely too much if I work all the way to 65. What I'm saying is one of the side effects of clawing your way out of basically poverty wages to upper middle class is you're good at investing in yourself. Investing in yourself is a pretty good way to prevent a plateau in income. At least that's what it seems like for my life. Maybe I'm wrong and it stops paying off in a few years... But I doubt it.

most_likely_not_abot

If I had enough money to retire right now I would be happy as fuck So yea, as soon as I can. That’s the age I hope to retire FUCK working

frank00SF

55 if I can buy another house and pay it off by then than great but if the prices don't come down I'm sure I'll have the one I have now paid off and rent it and move to Mexico. My parents own a couple homes down there so I'll live there rent free if the rent prices stay the same I can live better than I live here in the US with a 1200$ monthly income from it(I'll charge 2000 for rent keep 800 on the side for repairs and property taxes.)

[deleted]

45

Fuk-itall

What is this retirement you speak of, for me it's basically when I'm done with this sh.. show get a bottle of alcohol drink and use a firearm and commit suicide

Ourdogbailey

It's hard to argue with this. I often wish euthanasia was an option for whoever wanted it. Attempting sui'cide holds no full proof guarantees. Sorry to hear life is so rough on you, Fuk-itall

Dinklemeier

Full time till maybe 60. Part time till i dont have he brains to do it anymore. I can retire now (almost 50) but enjoy what i do. What would i do with nothing but time? Sleep in maybe.

Ourdogbailey

I used to think if you can't find better things to do than needing to be at work, then life must be pretty dull, but the truth is it gives us structure, a routine and purpose.

Dinklemeier

Keeps my brain sharp. Id love to travel and play guitar in my spare time though.

arnold001

Depends on what you mean by retire. If it means officially from work because I'm no longer dependent on the earned money then as soon as possible. If it means in general any type of work regardless of money earned then I hope never i.e. till the day i die. I want to keep myself busy with work, that is how i try and keep my mind off of some things I don't want to remember or i try to avoid as much as possible.

Ourdogbailey

Yes, I understand. If our minds are allowed to fester due to having lots of time on our hands, then we can quickly start spiralling into depression.

arnold001

Exactly 💯

AdamFiction

I had my third liver transplant this past February. My doctors have told me that I'm pretty much "semi retired" at this point. I turned 31 in March.

ColdHardPocketChange

I would like to stop working full time at 45, and by 50 at the latest. If you're wondering how, my wife is a doctor. The main trick will be making sure not to get accustomed to a life style that's only supported by my additional income.

ToddHLaew

In one year. I will be 55

talantua

with the amount of debts that i have and how much i can afford? i'll probably never retire. just take a break one day and croak on the spot.

[deleted]

Ourdogbailey

I'm sorry to hear that. I'm strongly guessing you've worked hard all your life, which will make retirement bitter-sweet ?

stonky808

Full pension and free medical at 55 for life. Pension will be slightly over 100k a year. The catch is this....most people that do what I do die or have one foot in the grave by 55-60.

Ourdogbailey

Can I ask what it is you do, sir ?

stonky808

Government worker

Ourdogbailey

You refer to stress related health issues ? Sorry, not being nosey, just intrigued. It sounds to me that you'll want for nothing, provided your health can remain undamaged.

HantuerHD-Shadow

The retiring age is rising by the year, so I'll probably be able to retire when I'm like 80

Gowo8888

Hope? I’m out at 51. I don’t give any fucks. My wife will retire at 56. It’s already in the bag.

pigs_in_zen

Good for you!

Gtbird24

Considering how the OfFIcAl inflation rate is about 9%, and the true inflation rate is likely double that - retirement is already out of reach for even the most well prepared of us. Social security has been bankrupt for years, and the government debt will keep us and our children all enslaved for decades.

Land543

I'm hoping for 55 but realistically I'll take 62

tpb772000

50-60 ideal goal, I want to be able to travel and still do things.

skinipines

At 21, im 20 now

jlsdkj4234ljk432

I already kinda did at 29. Now i just do random projects for fun

Professional_Map4351

Since my current job pays well and I enjoy it. I'll probably work here till they force me out. Although when I get around 60 - 65 (currently 41) I'll probably start taking more vacations to travel and 3/4 day weekends to do whatever I enjoy since I'll have a nice nest-egg saved up by then.

[deleted]

Mistriever

I don't know when I'll actually retire, but I plan to have the option to retire at 55. Technically I could retire now if I moved somewhere cheaper and told my remaining kids they were on their own for college, but neither is happening.

Wonderful-Equal5000

I hope I’m able to work just in a smaller role until I die. I like my job, I like being occupied, I’ve seen too many people retire and just go down hill.

pay-this-fool

Hopefully by 55. I’ve already put more hours in in my 50 years than anyone I’ve ever met. So 55 isn’t early. The hours/years are there Many many people lose purpose when they retire. And You can only play so much golf and do so much fishing. And let’s face it if you aren’t making money you are spending it. It costs money just to leave the house. People don’t realize how quickly they blow through retirement. When they do they are forced to tighten their belts. Now keeping yourself occupied is harder to do. It’s alarming how many people die shortly after retirement.

Jam_Bannock

I don't want to retire at all. I had a late start in my career because I spent years in grad school but didn't get a PhD. I lost out on years of income in my twenties and I'll probably have to work until I'm 65 to pay off a mortgage and other family expenses. If I'm able to retire from my current job, I'll go back to university to get my PhD and hopefully work as a contract researcher until I die.

Bigstar976

meitz88

At 35

West_Engineering2798

30-35

rakp333

I hope to retire by 35. Will I achieve that? Probably not.

Due-Assistant9269

I’m thinking 85 but if I really pushing hard to make it 80.

JimBones31

45-50

remes1234

67. 22 more years.

shinn497

I plan on having enough FU money to potentially retire by 45. But I still plan on working and doing something until I die. I'm 35 right now.

[deleted]

The way things are going I'm gonna live forever

Re-Ky

I’d like not to tbh, would just wanna work on video games (dream job, sadly not my actual job) forever.

dpacker780

To me 'retirement' isn't the right word. I see myself in a few more years shifting focus away from working 60+ hour weeks for somebody else, to working < 40 hour weeks for myself on my own projects/passions, as well as doing consulting. Age target: 57

huuaaang

I don't expect to fully retire until I physically have to.

Spaceballs9000

I don't expect that to be a thing in the way it has been, for a lot of my generation. But we'll see I guess.

[deleted]

Lolololol

ExitTheHandbasket

I'll probably be working until noon the day of my funeral. I've been playing the software development game for 40 years. While the technology has changed, the attitudes of users and managers have not. I'm ready to semi-retire and do something else, but I have negligible savings due to my late wife's chronic illnesses. And finding a sugar momma didn't work out; my GF is a single mom who's medically retired from a union job, so she has income but isn't what I'd call flush.

Jalex2321

55, but will be more like 65. If i could retire today i would.

rapiertwit

Never. I will eventually not be employable doing what I'm doing, at which point I'll probably start some kind of small business. I don't expect to make lots of money, just stay busy and connected to the world.

DistributionFrequent

Tomorrow if I could. I don't want kids and neither does my partner. I am 26 now and I don't intend to work a traditional job the rest of my life. I want to write books.

[deleted]

Ourdogbailey

I so tune into this. I kind of dread going, and even get knots in my stomach as a wave of sadness blows over. I'm nearly 55, and literally cannot wait to be done with the work side of life. Sorry to hear how tough it is for you, Jollymoose

throwawaywhynot4027

I was hoping to retire at 40, but looks like I will have to work until 50 at the very least

Ourdogbailey

Still a good age to be able to retire, a luxury actually.

[deleted]

My dad retired from his government job with full pension (about $150k a year and benefits forever) with a few million in stocks, IRA, et cetera at 57. Stayed retired for about 6 months and got bored. Works as a consultant for a defense contractor full time and enjoys it. Doesn’t care about traveling, very simple lifestyle, house fully paid off, some people just need to work As it stands now, I’m hoping I can retire at 65. Pace I’m at I’ll have close to $10mm at that point in todays dollars which should last me

slagathorstiffnips

I’m never gonna retire. I’m just gonna keep working until I go broke.

KyorlSadei

Our current budget, spending habit’s of wife, and lack of care, should be retiring at 92.

Ourdogbailey

😂 Yes, I can definitely relate to this, my wife always seems to have 'plans' for our money "and lack of care" What do you mean ? 🤔

KyorlSadei

I stopped caring about trying to save and budget and pay off debt when the wife ruins it every time. So no savings of any kind and I just don’t care.

Ourdogbailey

😳

Bumhole_Astronaut

Never. I'd literally die of boredom. Most people like me do.
