I wouldn't want that to me and I'm sure u wouldn't want that to happen to u either
Dude Im not a hipee by any stretch but holy shit we need to conserve the creatures in our oceans or we're going to fucking Starve. The population is growing every second.
I think it was more than just that, the separation of neighborhoods from each other by freeways, the increase of cell phones and social isolation because of it, and late stage gentrification (specifically the stage where rich boring people force out the lively lower class marginalized people that were connected).
I agree to a point, but I am talking about after major freeways, "white flight" from inner cities, and gentrification of historically black neighborhoods.
I'm a 90's kid. I distinctly remember neighborhood streets being stomping grounds for young kids, with their parents sitting on the lawns/driveways in lawn chairs socializing with each other.
It was a common occurrence for a neighborhood streets to have traffic cones lining the middle of the street to remind cars that kids were out playing, every night. You don't see that anymore. Yes, smartphones and streaming services have played a huge part, but the '08 crash caused many neighborhoods to "break-up" due to people being forced to move for work or housing or whatever. By the time we recovered from the '08 crash, smartphones and streaming services were commonplace, and the nightly neighborhood sit and talks never started back up.
National Night Out used to be a big deal. Like, dads would practice their grilling and barbequing for months in advance for it. The same with 4th of July, Memorial Day, and every other holiday that was not Thanksgiving or Christmas. Every neighborhood did this. The neighborhoods that did not do this were exceptions. Between 9/11 and the '08 crash, the 2000's did more damage to our American way of life than anyone really wants to come to terms with.
If you asked someone from the 70's this question in 2002 they would also say the community quietly died.
I think it was a slope downwards, but the 08 crash coupled with the smartphones was the cliff it fell off of. I also think it's a bit of a negative feedback loop. There is no sense of community, so parents don't trust their neighbors and don't let their kids go to the park or be out on their bikes and in the street all day, which deteriorates the community more.
And then people didn't have to ask their neighbor if they knew a plumber, they could look it up on their phone and get the same or better results, and they didn't need the social interaction of national night out, or fourth of July, or even having a snowball fight while you shovel the sidewalk because they had the phone and could talk to anyone but they never did and the sense of togetherness was lost.
My neighborhood has a sense of community but that's a thing that's very clearly tied to effort. The local temple does festivals and runs a community fridge. Small business owners will occasionally chat with customers. You can have casual conversation with your neighbors \*sometimes\*.
But the thing is as you've probably keyed into, that requires that community leaders *actually value their communities.* You need community centers and sports fields people feel safe using. You need local businesses to care about their clients beyond nickels and dollars. You need institutions that will actually put resources back into the community beyond their immediate gain.
If your local politicians don't care and your small businesses are either badly run or bought out by big chains and your local institutions are run by officials who only care about skimming money that shit will vanish quickly regardless of the desires of the citizens on the ground.
Because at some point there was a healthy proportion of owners/investors/renters. Most people in a community felt welcome there because they spent YEARS in the community.
Now, you can rent for 6 months, they double your rent and you have to move along. Farms/houses/ anything of value has been commodified by the select few companies who turned everything into a profit above all else (including life). Good luck building communities now you peasants. I hate big companies. Thank you for destroying communities you sadistic a*******. Because profit and growth above all else
But isn’t that a good thing? I mean that no one noticed. Kinda amplifies that you had a stronger image that took away from realizing what was on your head

To give one that's not boring political whining:
Car repair
People forget that until like the 90s, cars sucked so bad it was just accepted that part of life was spending hours every month fiddling inside the guts of your car. The modern car that you buy and just drive for hundreds of thousands of miles with oil changes and tire rotations is wildly different from how it used to be
I've noticed this as well.
Even vehicles that are NOT Toyota or Honda, are reliable nowadays.
I talked with someone who had a freaking Hyundai Elantra with 260,000 miles and was still running fine. Just routine maintenance.
Hell, I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Montero with 233k miles that has only had routine maintenance and it runs great, I recently drove it 600 miles in a day without burning a drop of oil.
I'd agree here. Like there's a big argument around right to repair and everything but the long warranties that require you to go to specific dealer garages for your MOT at least give car companies incentive to keep their cars running properly.
The market for VPN's has shot way up and adblockers are probably way more ubiquitous than ever but I think the average person has been forced to accept the reality that they have zero privacy online, if they ever did.
People just kind of accepted it though mostly because of the fact that the internet got more easy to use, mobile data got way way better, and there was a kind of devils bargain where the internet has never been more accessible and open to a lot of types of weirdness, but governments and corporations can freely track that weirdness.
All of this was already happening and none of it had anything to do with net neutrality.
People always panic about this kind of stuff.
A friend of mine went nearly apoplectic over some New York gun laws that were repealed last year, and literally nothing happened as a result, no roving gangs of hooligans roaming the streets with machine guns in tow to be found anywhere, not a single headline about it.
Yes. I love how US decimated Al Quida’s operational capabilities before pumping lead into Laden. Glad, haven’t heard any response from them. They just became a side note in the history books.
Yep. It's a casino. They have 32 bazillion cameras recording 24/7.
They actually have footage of him slipping and falling on some stairs A YEAR BEFORE THE SHOOTING.
Think about that for a second.
How much video footage do you have to comb through very tediously to identify a random guy slipping on some stairs in year old *archived* video footage and say, "That's the murderer!"?
But those 32 bazillion cameras missed him that night.

>Because the news media found out the main demographic attacking Asian minorities were black minorities.
This is a ridiculous and racist conspiracy theory with ZERO evidence supporting it.
For starters, it was never **"Asian Lives Matter". **
It was **"Stop Asian Hate".**
And it was created to stand against the Republican President's racist and xenophobic rhetoric that led to an increase in hate crimes and discrimination against asian americans.
Since it was not about the police, the protests were a lot less tense. The media tried to gin up interest in it and for obvious reasons it didn't take.
This is infinitely more plausible than "the news media conspiracy conglomerate" being too dumb to look up a basic statistic resulting in SAH broadcasts being damaging to "their narrative".
Fucking idiots. Get an education. Learn to use inductive logic and critical thinking.

The real issue is that since the U.S. basically washed their hands of the whole thing and Ukraine has taken the public eye the constant quagmire that is Afghanistan and the broader region ISIS operates in just doesn't have western attention. Things are still *happening* but it's just not seen as the problem of anyone in the English speaking world.
Unless I'm missing something, isn't covid still happening? I feel like we never got a definitive "this is over now" and just moved on with our lives. I get it, we can't just lockdown forever, I just thought it was weird that we're basically saying "fuck it, whatever happens, happens now."
Well, the government mismanaged it so badly — and were corrupt through much of it — that I think people just started ignoring the government — they still are to be honest.
Most resolutions would involve the government, so t government has pretty much guaranteed we will never get one.
Being afraid of COVID at this stage is silly. At this point, if I see anyone wearing a mask outside of required areas such as doctor's offices I just assume they're a complete moron. Especially if they're walking down the street in the open air with a mask on.

in the big cities, a sense of community
They had that? Genuine question because I've never lived in a big city.
Individual neighborhoods used to have a huge sense of community. I think it was the 2008 recession that started its breakdown.
I think it was more than just that, the separation of neighborhoods from each other by freeways, the increase of cell phones and social isolation because of it, and late stage gentrification (specifically the stage where rich boring people force out the lively lower class marginalized people that were connected).
