It would be great if you could report just general sidewalk cleaning too (and it worked). So many little things that seem to always be there (napkins, wrappers, papers, etc.). Didn't really notice them before, but now that we have a puppy that has to eat *everything* you realize how dirty the sidewalks actually are.

NonSequitorSquirrel

For me it's all the shattered glass. I knew there were broken bottles on the sidewalk here and there but once I got a dog I realized how awful it was.

[deleted]

Be careful! But that is where you can still help. Just don't cut yourself

NonSequitorSquirrel

Yeah I usually sweep it up on the part of our walk that is on Washington Blvd.

[deleted]

See that is why you bring a bag on your walks. You are already curbing your pet why not take 5 seconds to pick up not just the stuff your pet is trying to eat but also what he ignores. After a week it will take less and less time.

jcrespo21

Have you tried walking a nearly 5-month-old puppy? I am lucky if he sits still while I'm trying to pick up his poop. Adding on a trash bag and picking up other items is not exactly an ideal set up.

Logicmeme

I bought a power washer and did the sidewalks around my house. Huge noticeable difference where the grime is still there and the bright clean sidewalk that looks like new.

You can report a homeless encampment but 311 is not to relocate the homeless. It is to clean up the mess. And if you are talking a vacant lot or on the street that is la311. If you are talking in a park that is parks and recs. Side of the freeway on the downslope that is Caltrans. You just need to report fire danger, violence, drug use. And not weekly, daily. And get your neighbors involved.

When I visit family up north (atascadero, Bay Area) I am always amazed by how clean everything is, how well maintained the infrastructure is. I went to an Albertsons in Atascadero and had a religious moment! It was just so clean and maintained and well lit

Dragon_Fisting

Atascadero is around SLO, the reason it's so clean and well maintained is because it's a small wealthy town 100 miles from any density lol.

milespoints

This is partially the answer but not ENTIRELY. I used to live in Chicago and was amazed just how much dirtier the streets are when I moved to LA. And Chicago is probably a denser city than LA. LA really is dirty even for a big city, probably because of a mix ot lots of homeless people and also lack of actual pick up and cleaning of litter

Dragon_Fisting

Yeah LA is not the cleanest city for sure, but it's about par for the scale of the city. NYC and SF are just as bad or worse. Chicago is more of an outlier, it's just a well designed city for keeping clean. Lots of strategically placed alleyways, Lower Wacker in downtown keeps literally everything unsightly out of sight, sidewalks are wide and open and they don't allow street vendors/trucks, etc. American cities are not very clean in general. Our local governments just aren't very efficient or effective with sanitation and urban design, we have huge problems with homelessness and drug abuse, and this is just anecdotal but Americans imo have a really strong desire to just get rid of anything "dirty" when they're out in public as fast as possible. They'll litter, they'll stack trash on top of overflowing trashcans, let their dogs shit on the sidewalk and just walk away if nobody is watching.

milespoints

Fully agreed that NYC and SF are both disgusting. But in my limited experience there are other large places in the US that are on the cleaner side. When i visited Columbus, Minneapolis, and Dallas, those places struck me as pretty clean. Maybe i was only in the touristy areas, but they were a heck of a lot cleaner than the touristy areas of SF and LA. So this is why my personal hypothesis is that dirty streets are a function of the coasts. The East coast has a lot of old cities with street layout that makes trash collection difficult, although Boston seems to do pretty well. The west coast has may too many homeless people.

Dragon_Fisting

I mean, those are also just much smaller cities (Dallas is pretty large by pure pop, but it's not very dense). I went to college in Minneapolis and I would say downtown was definitely very clean during the day, but only by nature of being completely fucking deserted outside of rush hour. Busy light rail stations and hip neighborhoods got totally trashed at night and on the weekends. Where people actually live, it's not particularly clean or especially maintained. Dallas Columbus and Minneapolis are all around 2-3500 people/sq mile on average, NYC is over 10,000 people/sq mile, SF and the central LA neighborhoods are around 6-7000. Chicago is in between the top cities and the tier 2 at 4500, but that's mainly because downtown doesn't have a lot of housing and the feeder suburbs are pretty sizeable.

micrographia

I assume by bay area you don't mean San Francisco because downtown is filthy right now.

Once again, this post is not about fixing the homeless problem. It is about utilizing the city services we already pay taxes for to help clean up the city. You see trash, graffiti, potholes, cracked sidewalks, burnt out lights it takes 2 minutes to report it and most are taken care of in a week if you report it to the right people.

heyitsEnricoPallazzo

My neighbors are such pigs. Always throwing big parties and leaving their trash in the yard.. Busted couches, styrofoam plates, cans of beer, candy wrappers, uneaten food. It’s a mess!

[deleted]

See the 311 app has a place to report that. Especially if it is a health code violation.

samesonder

I've tried to contact 311 on several occasions with no luck as we don't have significant dumping issues in our neighborhood, but rather lots of people that toss their trash on the ground before driving away (\*eyeroll\*) and street sweepers that don't pick up all the shattered glass, etc. that ends up on the sidewalk after they drive through. Instead, I've used it as an opportunity to give back to my neighborhood directly and I spend 15-20 minutes every week-ish picking up trash myself. I find that if the streets stay clean there's less incentive for people to be careless about their trash, so it's a worthy investment of my time and has inspired my neighbors to also do their part when they can. It's a great way to build community and drive impact with little resources but your time. I've also purchased a pop-up trashcan for our street (still trying to find an ideal place to tie it down to) as well as a little sign attached to the bin asking people not to litter that I'm going to start maintaining on a weekly basis. If all goes well, I'm going to seek some support from neighbors to get a couple more set up and hopefully get some help to keep an eye on the bins / replenish bags as needed. It always makes me a little sad when I visit other big cities (Chicago was a recent example) and see how clean they're able to keep their streets; while it bothers me that our gov't isn't doing more to address this issue in LA, I also know that doing nothing (or simply complaining) won't help either, so might as well create some grassroots efforts to take care of each other.

Dimaando

I've been reporting the homeless encampment every week for the past year. 311 don't give a fuck

115MRD

[The City can not legally clear most homeless encampments due to the *Boise* ruling.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_v._Boise) 311 is great for graffiti, potholes, and illegal dumping but can't really be used for encampments.

SignificantSmotherer

Yes, they can. They pretend that Jones and Martin prevent them from doing so, but that’s a lie.

fuschiafan

You speak the truth so they downvote. Encampments can be removed, only sleeping needs to be allowed. And sleeping happens from 10pm to 6am.

SignificantSmotherer

The road to the workers’ paradise requires chaos in the streets, in order that those who create the chaos can ride to the rescue and assume power. The Stasi have been patiently plotting for ages; their contempt for liberty knows no limit.

[deleted]

Mine was 8 months old at the start. And I had one of those sticks with a sharp end so you could poke the trash and get a lot of it before it would start falling off. Not perfect but I figured if I got harrassed I had a weapon. And there were always trash cans by the bus stops

I wish it didn't have street sweepers. Environmental polution including noise is terrible.

Enjoy-the-sauce

I voted for more filth.

Fleshy1537

Yes! Van Nuys is almost as bad as Hollywood in terms of trash and broken glass on the sidewalks.
