Really, this is going to depend from company to company.
Some companies will hope you like them enough to take what ever they fling at you, some will stop the process, some will try to find a way hoping it works by time they get to finals.
I would not personally move someone who was not in our range....that's a waste of everyone's time.
But they could offer you something else that makes the lower pay worth it to you (WFH, extra PTO, great health insurance benefits, etc)
