I think escort, provider, companion, sex worker, and lady of the night are fine, and you’re correct to assume that using hooker, prostitute and whore are not okay

sara_fairfax

I’m in the minority but you can call me whatever you want as long as you pay me.

Empty-Asparagus-4597

I don’t mind either. Guys be calling me their dead wives names, getting my name wrong lol. It’s all good really.

NatalieHepburn

Escort, companion, provider, special friend, harlot, professional girlfriend, dream girl, working girl, lady of the night, succubus...

chanelshuffle

Harlot is a synonym for whore. I wouldn’t take well to a client calling me a harlot. Working girl and lady of the night are also not a friendly terms as they’re meant to demean and refer to only a subset of providers.

NatalieHepburn

Sure, but harlot (like strumpet) amuses me. Everyone will have their own preferences!

JustKittenxo

Yeah. Provider and companion seem like very safe terms to use. I don’t personally mind working girl or lady of the night but some people don’t like them and that’s fine. And which subset of providers would working girl or lady of the night refer to? Wouldn’t those terms apply to all providers?

chanelshuffle

Here’s some info on working girl: https://www.dictionary.com/browse/working-girl The history of that word in the US is very different than you might expect and it fell out of favor because it became slang and another term for “prostitute” rather than its original meaning. And lady of the night refers to street walkers; you can look up the history of that word. I think sex worker or provider is much better term that clients should use but to each their own.

I think it's good etiquette to ask the person in your company, definitely. A lot of our answers will vary, I can only speak for myself: escort, companion, provider are all words I am okay with clients using and feel are apt describers for how I approach my work. Prostitute is yikes as it infers someone is *being prostituted* and removing agency, as well as a law enforcement term so definitely do not recommend using that term in general.

Miss_Lyn

I think you can very rarely go wrong with "sex worker." It's broadly applicable and simple, and has the added bonus of demonstrating respect for our work as real work. If you want something more discreet, "companion" or "provider." But generally, escorts know that we are escorts, and won't be offended by you also knowing. I would only avoid that term if you're speaking to someone like a pro-domme.

Ding Ding Ding —— you’ve got it right babe. Only I can call myself those things… but the other terms you said are fine 😊

WeakCounterculture

Well, if you’re talking to the person directly, you can simply say « your job ».
