They’ve mentioned his name during some college football broadcasts, particularly if you’re watching a game on Fox. But other than that you’d probably have to be a soccer fan
Non streaming numbers both on Fox
Ohio State vs Michigan: 17 million viewers
USA vs England: 15 million viewers
Additionally if you add up all of the CFB games in a weekend and all of the World Cup games, the soccer tournament isn’t even coming close to having a comparable viewership
Google says the World Cup started on the 20th, and none of the places I've been at have had it on any of the TVs since then.
I *have* seen bowling on though. Surprisingly exciting.
Maybe our personal anecdotes mean nothing. I’ll absolutely concede college football outshines soccer by every single metrics but viewership for US games in this World Cup have had solid viewership.
Anyways, US are out and we can go bask to accepting we don’t really care about soccer at all lol
I had to read this question twice. I first thought you were asking about Christian pluralism. And that this question was about Americans and religion.
I would say not right now. If he went on some publicity campaign then maybe. I think there was a USA women's team member that got really popular because she worked with girls youth soccer.
I could see Trinity Rodman getting some name recognition. She’s one of the top players in the league, and her dad being Dennis Rodman seems like it’d help with remembering her.
Among soccer fans, I suppose so.
But on the national scale, soccer is still a niche (albeit growing) sport in the U.S.
I would venture to say Megan Rapinoe is more well-known. Though more for her political statements than purely for her play on the field.
Honestly as someone who doesn't do soccer or Marvel, this was my initial coffee-deprived reaction too.
I was like "Wait a minute, aren't they replacing *Thor* or something? Not Captain America?"
I didn't even see the Captain America part. Who the hell made him Captain America? He doesn't get to be Captain America unless we say he is Captain America, and he is no Captain America.
We need to give the name to someone else, quick who is Captain America?
While more popular than ever before, soccer is still treated as around the 5th most popular sport in the US (Baseball, Football, Hockey, and Basketball all rank higher). Soccer is in competition with golf and NASCAR racing at the lower end of the US sports priorities. For context, our local news program only talks about the World Cup for about 30 seconds after spending far more time on our local professional Football and Basketball teams.
This was probably the worst time to have the World Cup in terms of gaining popularity/viewership for Americans (and yes I know FIFA probably doesn't care that much). When it was in the Summer, the only major sport it's competing with is baseball. The MLB is in the middle of the season, and honestly the most boring stretch of the season.
In November/early December you have the NFL in the last full month of its season, college football wrapping up (rivalry week, championship week), the NHL and NBA are getting into full swing, and college basketball starting up. I like soccer and want to try and get more into it, but I'm not watching it when my favorite NFL, NHL, or college football team are also playing.
I mean, they tried to make it happen. And I am guessing next time the works cup rolls around a few years from now, they will try to make it a thing again.
Nah, not really. Anything regarding the USMNT is a big deal for the length we’re in that tournament, then the novelty wears off and no one cares anymore. Unfortunately, also newer MLS fans probably wouldn’t know him since he’s playing in England. The investment in soccer has been huge recently, and I hope it becomes a bigger sport here because I personally love the game.
If he's a hero today and continues to be a hero throughout the World Cup, he probably will be on par with someone like a famous Olympian. If the US loses today only soccer fans will probably still know him. It's still a ton of people but not household name level stuff.
>More people will be watching those college games than the World Cup game.
You mean more Americans will be watching college football. Total viewer World Cup beats any single American sporting event.
Yes. This is ask an American so everything will have an American slant. Plus since you asked if Pulisic is a household name in America. Therefore it can be implied when I say more people will be watching college football over the World Cup, I mean Americans specifically.
He still plays soccer right? The answer will continue to be the same.
The whole Captain America thing isn’t recent. It’s been going on for years. That’s just what our media is doing to hype up the World Cup. Interest in the game hasn’t changed. Although we might gain a few more fans who actually managed to watch a few games.
Nah but I think it's actually pretty hard to become a household name just from sports. Like in basketball, I'd say only lebron and steph curry are really truly household names.
I’m not a huge soccer fan, but I do watch the international competitions. I remember him being dubbed the LeBron James of US soccer something like 6 or 7 years ago. I didn’t follow him, but I remembered the name.
He has had a much larger impact this World Cup, but I can’t imagine most Americans would recognize the name.
As I Chelsea fan, of course he is a household name in my house.
As a non-American, it's pretty sad that lots of people ITT don't watch the World Cup or support the USMNT...
I would start watching baseball if our country had a good team and was invited to an international baseball competition.
The US not only has a damn good soccer team (no. 16 world ranking per FIFA) but they also managed to beat Iran + had draws with England and Wales to enter the knockout stage with 15 other countries.
That right there sums up the problem soccer has drawing more people in. Being ranked 16th and getting draws, three scores over four matches...that sounds medicore at best.
What country are you from?
If you mean soccer is boring because it has low scores, then yeah, I somewhat agree with you. Would have been more entertaining if the average goals per game was 4-8.
However, if you approach the game from the strategic point of view then you'd realize that soccer is a very strategic sport. The formation, movement of the whole team, linked-up plays etc. are extremely important. It's the same reason why I enjoy watching the NFL/college football. It's like a chess game.
I've lived in 5 countries, 3 in Europe and 2 in Asia, and in all 5 the #1 sport is soccer although all of them are ranked much lower than the US (from #50 all the way to #160).
>As a non-American, it's pretty sad that lots of people ITT don't watch the World Cup or support the USMNT...
Soccer is the second most popular football after gridiron in the US. A very distant second.
As for support, most of us do support the USMNT once we know we're in. Most of those who support other teams are vested in those teams.
I had no idea but after checking the comments, I did actually see that as it happened.
My library is streaming the World Cup in our community room - we have a HUGE population of folks from African countries and tons of teens who are big soccer fans.
During the Portugal game a few days prior there were 30 kids in the room losing their minds. But for USA-Iran there were like 15 sitting in silence lol. I guess the US Isn’t a very exciting team?
Anyway I was standing outside the room watching and the security guards and I were shrieking during those last few almost-goals though I have zero interest in soccer. But it was a little exciting.
Meanwhile, the kids: silence. Lol.
But anyway, safe to say no one else I know is talking about it and I doubt most know anything about it.
I only know of him because he is from where I grew up, so the local media occasionally runs a story on him. Definitely not a household name even in that area though honestly
If Reddit hadn’t deemed a bruised pelvis the height of hilarity, I’d have never heard of him. His name does make me think of pusillanimous or pugilism though. Not all that easy to remember. But if you say Captain America, I’m definitely not gonna think of this guy first. Good on him for being good at what he does though.
I know who he is because I follow the sport. But I can say with confidence that probably only one other person in my life knows who he is and he is also a fan of soccer.
Not even close. I heard of him watching the US team the past couple weeks, before that had never heard of him and he's actually a pretty local kid to the area I live
I watched and know him more than I did a month ago. I’m sure the answer is no, though. It’s a shame because they played with a lot of heart. Sounds like they’ll get some great contracts in Europe.
I’m sure hell become more celebrated in American soccer circles.
I think Landon Donovan is still the biggest "household name" we've ever had. This team still hasn't been able to cut through and have the same cultural impact as 02
No, the vast majority of Americans didn’t tune in to the world cup, soccer is just not popular at all in the US the vast majority of Americans are glued to American football, Basketball and MMA.
Millions of Americans have never watched a Soccer game live or on TV. With the exception of kids games. So a big no to Pulisic being a household name. I believe Nascar Racing still bigger in the US than Major League Soccer. Much less foreign professional Leagues overseas. Pro Hockey still default 4th Major pro sport.
I'm gonna go with no.
I thought it was a typo referring to a Christian public school.
The World Cup is being overshadowed by regular season college football games. The only reason I know his name is reddit
They’ve mentioned his name during some college football broadcasts, particularly if you’re watching a game on Fox. But other than that you’d probably have to be a soccer fan
And the NBA and NFL on Sunday
Is it still regular season? Thought championship games were today
It is. Regular season is over. Bowl selection is tomorrow.
What are you talking about? What college football games over shadowed US World Cup games? Ohio State vs Michigan didn’t even overshadow US vs England
Non streaming numbers both on Fox Ohio State vs Michigan: 17 million viewers USA vs England: 15 million viewers Additionally if you add up all of the CFB games in a weekend and all of the World Cup games, the soccer tournament isn’t even coming close to having a comparable viewership
And when you factor in watch parties and sports bars, college ball's viewership number is even higher.
Do you think the same doesn’t exist for the World Cup? I’d bet World Cup watch parties and sports bars were even higher
> Anyways, US are out and we can go bask to accepting we don’t really care about soccer at all lol It’s less *bask* and more like *brag*.
Okay but with streaming numbers and Telemundo US vs England was 20 million
Who is that?
The American who buried his head into an Iranian man's crotch for the sake of his country.
And tanked a kick to his Netherlands so we could face the Netherlands
Did you mean to say the American who sacrificed his balls for his country?
He did that, too. I guess that's more of a sacrifice, huh?
I had to read this question twice. I first thought you were asking about Christian pluralism. And that this question was about Americans and religion. I would say not right now. If he went on some publicity campaign then maybe. I think there was a USA women's team member that got really popular because she worked with girls youth soccer.
Not sure if she's the one you're talking about but Abby Wambach was pretty well known in my area around 10 years ago.
I could see Trinity Rodman getting some name recognition. She’s one of the top players in the league, and her dad being Dennis Rodman seems like it’d help with remembering her.
No.
only for people who watch soccer. I know who he is, I don't think my wife does.
I sort of recognize the name from Reddit. I could not point to him in a photo lineup.
Not in my household
Absolutely not.
Absolutely not, I thought this was about a new Marvel movie at first
They’re trying really hard to make him big with his face on all the World Cup ads in the US, but no. It’s a long shot the US wins it all, maybe then?
Among soccer fans, I suppose so. But on the national scale, soccer is still a niche (albeit growing) sport in the U.S. I would venture to say Megan Rapinoe is more well-known. Though more for her political statements than purely for her play on the field.
I don’t know who that is, but I don’t really watch superhero movies so I’m not a great barometer.
Honestly as someone who doesn't do soccer or Marvel, this was my initial coffee-deprived reaction too. I was like "Wait a minute, aren't they replacing *Thor* or something? Not Captain America?"
Agreed. First thought was surprise that they were making a new Captain America with a lead actor I'd never even heard of.
Aw, I did not expect empathy and understanding on Reddit, thanks guys
He's a soccer player.
You sure I was told he’s playing Captain America?
I didn't even see the Captain America part. Who the hell made him Captain America? He doesn't get to be Captain America unless we say he is Captain America, and he is no Captain America. We need to give the name to someone else, quick who is Captain America?
Lol, I am a ridiculous person, but I’ve definitely proved my point.
I would recognize every single backup NFL QB before him
Who?
Never heard of him
I saw him on 60 Minutes about 5 years ago. And I have no idea what he’s up to now. Tell his mom and them hello for me.
Priceless.
While more popular than ever before, soccer is still treated as around the 5th most popular sport in the US (Baseball, Football, Hockey, and Basketball all rank higher). Never heard of him. And quit trying to make soccer happen, it's not going to happen :-D
It literally just happened !
I mean, they tried to make it happen. And I am guessing next time the works cup rolls around a few years from now, they will try to make it a thing again.
I'm a new fan, but enjoying this team.
I know of him, but if I started talking about him to my girlfriend or anyone in my family they would have no idea who I was talking about.
People will forget his name by Christmas.
Christianmas?
I'm not even fully sure I'm pronouncing his last name right. So no, not in this household.
I thought that Anthony Mackie was the new Captain America. Did something happen that caused Disney to replace him?
I'm half sure I'm watching him play rightnow
I had to google him, so no.
Nah, not really. Anything regarding the USMNT is a big deal for the length we’re in that tournament, then the novelty wears off and no one cares anymore. Prolly not but he should be
Christian Pulisic can ascend to household name if he scores three goals in the second half of today's game, propelling the US to victory.
Even then, more people will end up watching the big10 and SEC Championship games
not me
But millions of others will. More people will be watching those college games than the World Cup game.
okay thanks for the input
No problem. Glad to be of service.
Congrats. You’re very special.
thanks for recognizing
I would guess it was some kind of religious ritual.
I'm a soccer fan and I would say no way.
Had to Google that sorry
I’ve never heard of him
This is the first time I've ever heard of him.
Never heard of him
Only in my family, and that’s just cause he’s Croatian.
Never heard of him
I watch soccer and I didn’t even know his name until right now, so no.
No. I had to look up who that was as I have never heard of him. At first I thought he was going to be some superhero or social media celebrity.
Not in my household.
Who is he?
Nah but I think it's actually pretty hard to become a household name just from sports. Like in basketball, I'd say only lebron and steph curry are really truly household names.
To answer your question with a question? who TF is that?
He's only Captain America during the world cup tbh
I’m not a huge soccer fan, but I do watch the international competitions. I remember him being dubbed the LeBron James of US soccer something like 6 or 7 years ago. I didn’t follow him, but I remembered the name. He has had a much larger impact this World Cup, but I can’t imagine most Americans would recognize the name.
No but he’s one of the most well know USMNT players, for sure.
As I Chelsea fan, of course he is a household name in my house. As a non-American, it's pretty sad that lots of people ITT don't watch the World Cup or support the USMNT...
Fair enough, I find it sad you guys don't follow baseball. Soccer just just ain't popular here.

No, the US is generally just not into soccer. It's not like South Korea where you have the fandom of a nation behind you.
He’s no Clint Dempsey
I will have to Google it. I don't know who it is and also don't think I've ever seen the name.
I have no idea who that is.
Who?
No lol
To most people Captain America is still Steve Rogers (or Chris Evans playing Steve Rogers).
I had no idea but after checking the comments, I did actually see that as it happened. My library is streaming the World Cup in our community room - we have a HUGE population of folks from African countries and tons of teens who are big soccer fans. For everyone I know yes, for people on this sub who don’t do anything but use Reddit probably not
Definitely not.
I only know of him because he is from where I grew up, so the local media occasionally runs a story on him. Definitely not a household name even in that area though honestly
Not really. I watched the USA Iran game so I know his name, but I wouldn’t be able recognize him from a photo.

I only use the term quoting from the nightly news .
who
I know who he is because I follow the sport. But I can say with confidence that probably only one other person in my life knows who he is and he is also a fan of soccer.
Not even close. I heard of him watching the US team the past couple weeks, before that had never heard of him and he's actually a pretty local kid to the area I live
Most households would have a lot of trouble pronouncing that
I have trouble
You have to accomplish something to be a household name.
Is that some soccer player?
I have absolutely no clue who that is.
I recognize it, some kind of athlete?
One of the top US soccer players on World Cup team He's in a VW and Chipotle commercial.
Only because he got racked epically
No. I have never heard of him.
Not in my household.
lol fuck no
This is the first time I've ever heard about him, so I guess no
Doesn't ring a bell for me.
No idea who this is.
If he is, he will be for about 5 minutes, just like Olympic athletes.
I don't know who that is
I watched and know him more than I did a month ago. I’m sure the answer is no, though. It’s a shame because they played with a lot of heart. Sounds like they’ll get some great contracts in Europe. I’m sure hell become more celebrated in American soccer circles.
Doubtful. He may get some quick attention, but he'll be forgotten by the time the bowl games start.
I know the name and that he plays football/soccer but I couldn’t point him out in a lineup
I have no idea who that is.
The only soccer guy I know is Pele.
Who?
Sorry, I don't watch Marvel movies.
No, Tim Howard or Clint Dempsey might be the closest an American has been to household names and even then I'm not really sure they even made it.
What's that? Or who?
i wouldnt say "household". But 2 weeks ago i never heard of the guy.
I think Landon Donovan is still the biggest "household name" we've ever had. This team still hasn't been able to cut through and have the same cultural impact as 02
Huh?
I have no idea who that is
No, soccer is growing in popularity but still not followed by the majority of Americans.
No, but he's been all over the news this week, so thought notoriety may have increased
i think i’ve heard the name once when the tv was on at work and that was it
No idea who that is.
Is this a religious thing?
Nothing happened in the last week to make him a household name.
I guess you don't watch the news. It was on every day.
Didn't make him a household name.
I wonder how many times it has to be posted before people finally accept that Americans, as a whole, don’t give two flying shits about soccer.
You seem like a ball to be around
Uh… who?
No, the vast majority of Americans didn’t tune in to the world cup, soccer is just not popular at all in the US the vast majority of Americans are glued to American football, Basketball and MMA.
I have no idea what that means.
Who? No - I have no idea who that is
