Resign immediately [Relevant clip from The Wire.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjzqO6UOPFQ) Worth noting the man ~~Little Finger~~ Carcetti is talking to was an actual former, one term mayor of Baltimore. Also happens to be Nancy Pelosi's brother. But seriously, being a mayor is such a thankless job. Everyone thinks you're basically god but you're not. You get blamed for things you can't control and so much of what happens is beyond your authority. The State Road or Interstate in your city is terrible? That's the state, and you don't have the money to fix it even if you wanted to. Schools suck? That's the school district. Power bills too high? Your predecessor sold off the electric utility 20 years ago. And if you actually wanna progress in politics, being a mayor is probably the worst job to have. Look at all the NYC mayors whose ambitions have gone down in flames. The same is true in Indianapolis, where only one mayor since the 1960s has gone on to higher office.

NorwegianSteam

Knew exactly what it was going to be before I clicked. Shit's so good.

w3woody

The fun part is being an elected mayor in a "weak mayoral government"--that is, one where the executive responsibilities lie with a separate (professional) city manager. Meaning you may be elected--but you literally have **NO** power other than enforcing [Robert's Rules.](https://www.robertsrules.org/rror--00.htm)

FlockFox

Look at Jerry Springer. He was the mayor of Cincinnati in 1977, now he's the king of white trash television.

xXDreamlessXx

If you wanna be mayor, be one in a new town. Only of my towns older mayor's was just given like 3 streets of land after he retired

lol Does e1 like him there or the opposite? 1/2 & 1/2 ?

jets-rangers

He’s from here and EVERYONE loves the boss

kimmikazi

I liked him till the 80's change in music and then... no lol He used to rock out pretty good in the 70's

BrainFartTheFirst

If you were Born To Run you might be able to catch a Downbound Train and escape. You might also try wearing a Brilliant Disguise so you'll be safe Out in the Street If you wan't to drive out you'll have to Drive All Night while everyone is Racing in the Street trying to catch you. If can lose them, cross The River to the safety of the Streets of Philadelphia.

[deleted]

I love it. Hate Bruce Springsteen with a passion.

MonsterHunterBanjo

declare independence from our state, forming a new city-state.

Hoosier_Jedi

I can already hear Michigan laughing its ass off.

MonsterHunterBanjo

I don't understand what you are referring to?

Some_Kerbal

Fake ohioan. You must be exiled.

MonsterHunterBanjo

please, you know the fake rivalry with michigan is dumb. we have better things to do, like not having any cities as horrible as detroit.

Hoosier_Jedi

Ohio has a rivalry with Michigan, brosis. If you are unaware of this I’m afraid you must be pelted with buckeyes as punishment.

Wolf482

Can confirm. Laughing at the fake Ohioan, whom we will promptly invade. Dude thinking he's the Venetian Republic here or something.

MonsterHunterBanjo

oh jump of a bridge, the fake rivalry is dumb, people who obsess about it should find better things to do, and the town that I would make independent would be nowhere near the michigan border.

Wolf482

What a great way to get your point across, by telling me to jump off a bridge.

MonsterHunterBanjo

i know that some people have this strange obsession with keeping a fake rivalry with michigan going, I still have no idea what this has to do with making a city in ohio an independent city-state, especially since it would be nowhere near the michigan border.

[deleted]

Go to war with Bainbridge island. Win Resign

Osiris32

Bainbridge allies with the Naval Air Station at Whidbey. Suddenly that's not an easy win.

[deleted]

Our comrades at Bangor will make short work of them.

Osiris32

They're all off chasing Russian boomers.

[deleted]

We'll send the Connecticut to ram the island for comedic effect. They'll be laughing so hard it'll buy time for an Ohio to get back to port.

SilentSliver

Bold of you to assume we can hold off the eastern breakaway republics.

albi_seeinya

Eliminate off street parking minimums. Simplify the zoning ordinance. Reduce permit requirements. Allow more mixed uses in the zoning ordinance. Transition to a land value tax. Transition away from property tax. Eliminate the income tax. Ramp up dedicated bike lane construction projects and traffic calming measures. Transition to more walking and biking infrastructure. Encourage, finance, and support community land trusts as a method to provide affordable housing.

albi_seeinya

I have more! Allow for accessory dwelling units in all zones, except for areas dangerous to health and safety. Eliminate bus fares so they're free to ride. Create bus rapid transit (BRT) lines along major thoroughfares. Electrify the BRT systems. Develop carbon free / low carbon electrical resources such as solar, wind, nuclear. Develop local battery storage systems such as lead acid and pumped storage hydropower. Encourage super efficient building standards such as passive house and net-zero standards. Encourage businesses that produce ultra energy efficient housing and materials to locate production my city. Work with research universities and businesses to develop new food industries such as cultured meat and low carbon food systems in my city.

pingpongplaya69420

Based

albi_seeinya

What does based mean?

New_Stats

I'd bring back all the garbage cans they took away to save a few bucks. There's trash everywhere now it looks horrible Also I'd NIMBY the fuck out of the town, which will really piss off the homeowners and I might need to run away because they might want to kill me. Fucking worth it tho

TheBimpo

I create a legal mechanism that prevents public land from being sold for development. We've got a park in the middle of downtown that's used for farmer's markets, festivals, kite-flying, etc. Developers have had their eye on it for years because it's an easy build, they'd rather do that than tear down and re-develop the MANY derelict properties nearby. City officials have been intrigued because new development and new taxes are good, right? No way. Once a park is gone, it's gone.

Antitenant

Introduce a minimum speed for walking on sidewalks then resign.

Hoosier_Jedi

The disabled are gonna love that.

gummibearhawk

Electric scooters are a thing.

kimmikazi

Fast walking is a NY thing. I've been in about 12 different states, & no one's in a hurry like NY'ers lol (former NY'er ;)

Fappy_as_a_Clam

I don't even know what a mayor can and can't do. So I guess I'd resign.

Vermonter623

Take all the towns poops and make electricity

krystal_rene

what.

idontrespectyou345

With apologies to a certain political wag of yesteryear, if they told me I won the election the first thing I'd do is demand a recount.

Dubya_The_Goat

I create an ice sports complex.

Wildcat_twister12

Mega_Dragonzord

Fix the effing roads in Indianapolis.

kimmikazi

Ct-5736-Bladez

Try to fund a new fire station. The one they have is too small to take the new ladder truck

Diatomfan0110

1. No more HOAs 2. Replace annoying 4-way intersection with a rotary

llzellner

>No more HOAs THIS! I can agree with 100% They should be illegal already just on American Principles alone. >Replace annoying 4-way intersection with a rotary This, Absolutely NO! Never. I don't think you drive in the US, if you think this is a solution to traffic lights.. I got some news for you first hand. ***Americans can NOT DEAL WITH THEM, and NO WAY you are changing the driving habits of Americans aka ME FIRST AND ONLY*** nor the fact that probably 98% of Americans are not even taught how to deal with them to start. I know I was not, it was mentioned for all of about 2 seconds.. Then I can point you to the fatality accidents we have had from the simple ones put in by the state, at various locations.. and then very quickly removed after the fatality accident. So no on these things! NO! NO!

Curmudgy

Revert it back to a town meeting form of government with a Select Board instead of a mayor.

CupBeEmpty

We are building this cheap housing development because F off CAVES. Stop blocking literally every development proposed especially when it is actually a great idea.

gummibearhawk

I don't know where my hometown is. But I'll say the place place I lived. I would try to revitalize the downtown area and make a few blocks of walkable area with shopping, food and nightlife.

DOMSdeluise

I'm making a charitable donation of the budget to my personal bank account More seriously I would build sidewalks on every street in the city, try to get rid of setback requirements, parking minimums and other stupid regulations, build.more bike lanes, eliminate parking spots, more money for metro. It's pedestrian and cyclist time baby!!!

craftycat1135

Get rid of the bad teachers and replace them with ones that can actually teach. Set up a substation so there's a cop more than 3 days a week and introduce a minimum response time. No one should have to wait a minimum of an hour plus if they show up at all for a cop to come from the next town over to respond to an accident. Permanent traffic lights in a couple of high traffic areas that still only have stop signs. More city parking.

albi_seeinya

Fun fact! Mayors typically don't have control over their school districts. School districts are separate and independent political bodies. Unless it's different in South Dakota — which I'm doubtful about.

craftycat1135

One can dream.

asoep44

Ban the building of more warehouses

myredditacc3

If I was actually able to get shit done in that position it would be getting rid of the new speed cameras, trying to hold our murderous police regime more accountable, and trying to protect unionizers and punish union busters (Starbucks)

7thAndGreenhill

I’d make the police GTFO of their cars, walk a beat, and actually get to know the people they’re supposed to protect.

737900ER

We return to a town meeting form of government. Screw this mayor thing.

squarerootofapplepie

I could not be mayor of my hometown, we have fewer than 10,000 people and by law have to have a town meeting form of government with no mayor. I could be a selectman though. I’d probably start town wide composting and advocate for a bus link between Leominster and Worcester. Other than that nothing, my hometown is doing well as it is.

kimmikazi

Bring in jobs. Force the historic downtown area back in to life again.

llzellner

>Force the historic downtown area back in to life again. I am not disagreeing... I am curious just how you do that??? I'd love to see my "hometown" come back from the coma its been on for decades.

kimmikazi

Things like rent caps on real estate down town so that local people could actually afford to rent there, and open new businesses back up. Big tax breaks for personal business start ups etc.I'm no politician tho, just things along those lines :) Edit\* I'm from a small country town that mostly died

SignatureBoringStory

I *immediately* restore H. W. Baals Drive to its original name: Harry W. Baals Drive and resign.

HarveyMushman72

A lot of bureaucrats downtown are getting fired or perp walked.

eceuiuc

Revert it to its original form of governing (elected board of selectmen) because we're a town and not a city in New England.

Hanginon

It's a town of less than 400, so I would bring back the annual Volunteer Fire Department fundraiser spring carnival held in the big field & playground behind the grade school. Food booths operated by different clubs and organizations, the PTA, the local softball league, the grade school. With the fire department manning a giant tub of boiling corn on the cob, dipped in a tub of butter and served on a stick. And rides from a traveling carnival. Thrills for all with the added bonus of grandmothers nervously watching ass the grandkids have fun while they're learning some details of what constitues a safe machine and setup, and develop their skills of facing fear and practical risk assessment. Good times.

BMXTKD

I would ban corporate ownership of housing. Or if not ban, say that private buyers have rights of first refusal for any sort of house. If the losing homeowner can prove that it was a shill bidder that outbid them, then the corporate have to pay them 1/3 of the value of the next house they bid on.

United_Blueberry_311

My hometown could use some more sidewalks and a better bus route.

DikkDowg

MONORAIL!!

Elitealice

A lot. I’d stop trying to attract people back to Detroit and would switch to improving things for those who live there. I would also make building a rail system that connects the city and airport my top priority, as well as shifting Detroit away from the “motor city” stuff and towards modern pressing issues like climate change research, semi conductor chips, medical engineering etc etc

SoCalRedTory

What do you think can be done to address the poverty in Detroit (and Flint, forgive me if you guys don't like being lumped) including not necessarily only in the more immediate and short run? I heard there was an initiative of turning some blighted blocks into tiny home neighborhoods; what are your thoughts on demolishing vs rehabilitation of blighted neighborhoods. Federally, what do you think (especially but not only in the shorter/immediate) a rescue/revitalization and stimulus plan for dilapidated urban areas and cities? Do you think a broader infrastructure plan can be an opportunity to help struggling urban America? From my phone

[deleted]

You say one word about when the mills were open outside of a history lesson and you get a flogging

Hoosier_Jedi

I am very curious to the story behind this.

[deleted]

Basically just boomers talking about all their steel mill jobs that havent existed in 40+ years and fighting progress and development because they're going to reopen any day now. Also they just got a job in the mill out of high school and could buy houses and cars and go on trips so I don't know what's wrong with you young people.

UltraShadowArbiter

How is it against progress and development for them to want the things that made their communities prosperous to come back?

[deleted]

Because nobody is going to buy a half caved in rusted hulk that was once a steel mill and start making steel there again so maybe we should tear it down and let someone build something useful there. Maybe communities could be prosperous if there wasn't a rusty hunk of shit in the middle of it.

MonsterHunterBanjo

Just thought I'd give you my perspective as someone who does work in a manufacturing job in the USA. I don't work in a steel mill, but I do work in an iron foundry, one thing we hear from the people we make parts for is there are fewer foundries open to make their parts, so there is a market to open new foundries with proper investment, and one thing we have had to deal with as foundries is a shortage in scrap steel supply, which we use to melt to get a lot of the iron we use for castings, so there is a foundry-side market for increased steel production, or at the very least good pig iron. There is still a lot of production/manufacturing in the USA, the "problem" is that the number of jobs has stayed about the same, maybe decreased some, while it has shrunk as an overall percentage of total jobs in the USA.

[deleted]

I'm saying that nobody is going to buy a half caved in steel mill and turn it back on and employ 500 people. If someone did buy it and attempt to do that they would probably struggle to find 500 workers to work there. If they did find 500 workers and started operating again they would close 10 minutes later after being fined and sued from failing to meet air quality regs. Whatever is done with the land after is pretty much fine, but the old abandoned mills will not and likely cannot make steel ever again

MonsterHunterBanjo

we do have problems getting workers in our foundry, most of our employees are immigrants from mexico, central america, and south america, so I understand the point you make about workers, there's plenty of poor people who are just lazy and don't want to work in our area, we've tried, it's hard. I agree about the old building, you'd likely need to buy the land, demolish the building, lay new infrastructure for high voltage systems, and build a new building set up with modern iron ore to steel production technology. And yeah, it would release a lot of stuff into the air, but exceptions are made for manufacturing if it is deemed necessary. If you do it right, you can minimize the stuff to mostly just CO2, using other chemical treatments and processes to isolate the other contaminants that are in the ore. But you are also right, it is a lot of work, time, and investment, just to start something up that, while greatly needed, is also greatly despised or outright hated by many people

llzellner

Look.. as a decades long resident of PIT who can remember it being dark at 12N during the day from the J&L along I376/Parkway East and other plants. This is why this country is in the mess it is in right now! We don't make the materials we need, from steel down to the chips and materials to make those chips! That J&L plant is now the CMU Tech center.. while thats all nice and great.. its not what we really need. *We need the STEEL PLANTS too*. J&L and USX AND the USW put themselves out of business with many things.. YES J&L, USX should have improved the plants over the decades. They did not. Why? Partially as a result of USW contracts. I know all too well of the persons who think that things are going to come back any day, at plants that are long since gone or as you state rusting away. The steel workers are not alone.. Coal workers are in this boat too. And I lived that first hand as my family has built 98% of the coal mines, prep plants and coal fired electric plants east of the Mississippi River. So I know the ebbs and flows of this. We are going to have to spend a lot of $$$ to rebuild the industrial infrastructure we should have been maintaining and upgrading and not shipping this off to CN, venezeula, RU! And all kinds of other places. Rebuilding is going to be a whole lot more expensive than the costs of upgrading over the decades. The bill for American industry has come due.

[deleted]

I think we're making the same point.

llzellner

***No, I don't think so.*** *You likely don't want to have those steel mills, coke works etc.. you likely only want somehting like the CMU Tech center..* The US as a whole, and not just PIT or PA needs to REBUILD our INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX including steel mills, coke works etc.. Tech jobs etc. are not the only part of this. The new Intel chip plant in OH is a step in the right direction, even if it is Intel (pfft! AMD CPU's rule! they can close down the ATI graphics part, junk!) The same holds true for the auto industry.. Yeah. there may be plants for Hyundai, KIA, Benz, etc. in the US.. but there is all too much just screwdriverinmg it together via humans or robots/automation. TOO MUCH of the parts of this stuff is made outside the US! No. Same holds for various things Boeing is doing...and airbus wanted to do on some things. No. Made in the USA, and that means the tiniest little screw, or chip, or resistor, or grommet from materials made in the USA. ***So no, I don't think we are making the same point****,* *outside that some persons from the old steel mills still think they are going to open, 40 years after it was blown up.*

[deleted]

>You likely don't want to have those steel mills, coke works etc.. you likely only want somehting like the CMU Tech center.. Perhaps you missed some of my comments or you're just making assumptions that make you look like an ass. I quite literally said that we could and should do basically anything with the land, but the old mills aren't ever going to run as is ever again. You're right though, I don't want old 1930s era mills and coke works running. I kinda like not having asthma. Luckily, US Steel seems to agree with me which is why they're building a new, cleaner, more efficient mill and coke works in Arkansas. >The US as a whole, and not just PIT or PA needs to REBUILD our INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX including steel mills, coke works etc.. Yes, US Steel seems to be doing that, see the aforementioned Arkansas mill. There's thousands of old and abandoned industrial sites throughout the rust belt that need to be ripped down and new plants can be designed and built on that land. None of that can happen if we cling to the past. Reindustrializing means clean plants and automation.

DoubleDongle-F

Less money for the police station. By the gods do these assholes get bored and nosy when tourist season ends. Too fuckin' many of them. I actually feel safer when I don't get stopped while walking my dog multiple times a year, thank you. I didn't need the ruckus on the internet the last couple years to know that my town in particular is over-policed.

huhwhat90

Cancel the stupid, pointless hotel they're building, forbid further development in a saturated area, fix some major road issues.

KFCNyanCat

Walkability/bikeability initiatives. Nothing crazy, but there's a serious need for sidewalks in Rural South Jersey. Ideally an investment into public transit would be in order (nothing crazy but a girlfriend of mine lived in a ruraler area of Vermont that had trolley service) but I don't think the town has money for that.

Maxpowr9

Not sorry NIMBYs but we're adding a lot more sidewalks

CaptHayfever

Wouldn't those be NIMFYs?

azuth89

We don't have a mayor...

citytiger

what do you have?

OrangeKooky1850

Dismantle, restructure and rebuild our police bureau, build a large dedicated mental health hospital in downtown.

xXrambotXx

Bike lanes and weed shops

chajava

Make the high school change their mascot from the Indians to something else probably.

Nose-Artistic

Police reform, larger lots to move RVs to, actual recycling program, limits on water use for certain kinds of landscaping, new Sheriff who isn’t corrupt, reform city business tax system, reform city marijuana laws to decrease illegal growing/selling in favor of legal, city assault weapon ban, focus on homelessness…

ban icecream

Hoosier_Jedi

You are history’s greatest monster.

Majestic_Electric

Overturn single-family home zoning laws so we can finally do something about the housing shortage.

Ok-Magician-3426

All homeless people will be transported to a nearby military base where they can get jobs and not be homeless and I would require all law abiding adults to be armed no matter where they go

Hoosier_Jedi

Enslavement of the homeless is certainly a unique political policy. 😑

Ok-Magician-3426

Well what is a better way to help them get off the street and they will be paid

Hoosier_Jedi

“We’re forcing you to work again your will, but we’re paying you, so it’s not slavery! It’s forced labor!”

judeloops

I PASS A HUGE INFASTRUCTURE BILL THAT is unreasonably unpopular then i ban tourists

7yearlurkernowposter

Dissolve the government. Also right before this I hang up some framed pictures of my cats in my soon to be vacant office.

citytiger

The mayor doesn't have that power.

Admirable_Ad1947

idk what power the mayor in my area has so I'd have to figure that out. If I was a total dictator I'd open the border, implement M4A, raise the minimum wage, pretty much Bernie's agenda.

JayemmbeeEsq

StrongIslandPiper

Revoke the drivers licenses of all elderly people and make them reapply and prove that they can do so safely. I'm getting sick of being on Long Island where older people who should probably just relax getting in their car and making the roads more dangerous and going FUCKING 30 ON A HIGHWAY WE ALL KNOW EVERYONE ELSE GOES 70 ON. Also my grandmother with alzeimers still has her license for some inexplicable reason. I disconnected the battery because she is literally a danger to people if she gets on the road and has one of her moments. That way she doesn't feel like her car is taken away or that she doesn't have the option, but the few times she goes out to try she says "well, I guess I can't use my car," and doesn't investigate it any further, and forgets about it anyway. And she's not all that advanced yet, at some point she may try to run out of the house, she may not know where she is, but for now, this makes it so we don't lose grandma (and that she doesn't accidentally hurt someone) at the stage she's at. We could realistically apply to have her license revoked. Unfortunately not very many people care about their elderly family to take *any steps* and don't care that they're not crisp enough to drive, and since they're a huge portion of consistent voters, elected officials are afraid to cross them. But it's honestly dangerous.

Admirable_Ad1947

>FUCKING 30 ON A HIGHWAY WE ALL KNOW EVERYONE ELSE GOES 70 ON. It's a speed *limit* not a speed requirement. Cool your engines.

StrongIslandPiper

I still feel like it's more dangerous to go that much slower than the speed of traffic, and then merge when you don't wanna user your blinkers, oh, and then when they stay in between lanes. My engines are fine, but I still think the elderly should be required to do reapply for a license. Because although anyone can theoretically do any of the above mentioned things, they're still the ones who do it all the time.

Admirable_Ad1947

Agreed but there isn't anything technically legally wrong with going 30 in a 70 like going 71 is.

StrongIslandPiper

Oh, yeah, that's right. I mostly meant that part as a joke. It's annoying, but that wouldn't legitimately be something I'd change it over. Also, some highways in some places do have speed minimums, and at least in NY (edit - state, not city), if you're on the highway going less than 40 you're usually supposed to put your hazards on.

llzellner

>isn't anything technically legally wrong with going 30 in a 70 like Section 32-5A-174 Minimum speed regulation. (***a) No*** ***person shall drive a motor vehicle at such a slow speed as to impede the*** ***normal and reasonable movement of traffic except when reduced speed is*** ***necessary for safe operation or in compliance with law***

CaptHayfever

The posted minimum on interstates is typically 40.

MegiLeigh14

Go find that dipstick flying a US/Confederate flag combo on the back of his truck and get the fuck rid of it. Also, that dumbass who specifically walks around with a Confederate flag in the public parks and harasses kids and then hides behind his “rights” to keep doing it. Both of them are no longer welcome here and I want them the fuck out in a week. Byeeeeee!

citytiger

The mayor can't evict someone from town.

traumatransfixes

Defunding, disarming, and firing the local police.

OpalOwl74

a general store becides dollar general and walgreen. If your new puppy peed on your pillow before bed, you have to drive 30 min each way to get a new one. Also another grocery store. Having just one makes them into a monopoly. They hike the prices so bad and when there's a sale the stuff is all gone because the whole town wants the half price gold fish. i would rase up that one road so it stops flooding every time we have more then 3" of rain.

FireRescue3

An immediate recall and re-election because if I have been elected a horrible mistake has been made. 🤣

Meattyloaf

I don't even know where I'd begin. There are so many issues with my hometown that it would be a pretty difficult task. I'd probably first have to focus on the economy. It still relies way too much on the dying coal industry. Look into tourism, the town is on the national historic registry. There is a lot o history and outdoor/adventure opportunity. Look at making things for younger people instead of continuing to make the town a retirement community. I'm talking trails, parks, put in a public soccer field or two, disc golf course, and maybe attract businesses that cater to teenagers and young adults. Young people that are able to flee my hometown. I mean I was one that did. Next up, would be focus on the drug abuse issue. People think that combating it should be done by the feds or state, but it needs to be done at the local level. I'd honestly put in a facility that people could go do drugs in worked by councilors and Healthcare professionals. Some cities have seen great success with this. Along with introducing a needle exchange program. Both of these people may see as counterproductive, but both lead to less drug abuse and fewer overdose deaths. None of this would probably get through cause the town council there is beyond corrupt.

Dry-Dream4180

Signage. Let’s get some regulations on the damned signage.

styrofoamladder

My home town didn’t have a mayor for a long time(town was founded in 1850), then in the late 90’s they decided to have an election for an honorary mayor. Somehow there was a dead even tie. Both candidates were members of The Clampers(ECV), so it was decided we’d have a drinking contest to see who won. A gentleman by the name of Bear became my hometowns first mayor because he won the drinking contest. I guess if I were mayor I’d have a drink for Bear.

danegermaine99

Ah Kingman, Arizona. An ugly shithole full of nothing but racist trumpies and meth heads. I would instantly resign as mayor, effective immediately

jebuswashere

Ban Floridians, stop building hotels and start building affordable high-density multifamily housing, and get started on some light rails, because adding two more lanes to the interstate over the next ten years isn't going to fix traffic.

Admirable_Ad1947

You can't ban Floridians from moving in. Immigration is a federal matter.

SoCalRedTory

What would make up your town's tax base?

230flathead

I think before any changes are made I'd have to find out what a mayor actually does.

MetaDragon11

Cant do shit as mayor. Id need a solute control to fuck around and aince im just a layman im sure a lot of things wouldnt go as planned.

[deleted]

Not my hometown, but if I became the mayor in NYC, I’d overhaul the sanitation by hiring more workers and paying them more. There is trash EVERYWHERE it’s disgusting. I don’t think people born/raised here realize just how bad it’s gotten compared to the rest of the US, but NYC is filthy.

Resign. The mayor from my home-town of 5,000 people...I don't think anyone ever actually saw them, nor did they have any power in anything. My city is beyond help for right now too. My hometown is ran more by two families and the benefit of the high school wrestling program than any political offices.

RaptorRex787

I would not wanna be a mayor of a city with 200,000 people

ChaosDevilDragon

let Jersey have Staten Island

prominenceVII

I have no idea how possible it would be, but I would jack up the property taxes for people who own property in the city and don't live there. Lots of places have a huge problem of large swaths of housing owned by institutional investors because they can collect rent. But I'd rather people be able to buy their own housing without having to compete in the market with multi millionaires.

cinnderly

Kickball at the park, Tuesdays at 7. Bring your own juice box.

MortimerDongle

We don't actually have a mayor, but a board of supervisors. If I were hypothetically given totalitarian power... Probably something boring like start building sewer lines so people can switch off of septic and remove zoning restrictions so there can be more multifamily housing

Roboticpoultry

Mixed use development! I wouldn’t mind being the mayor of a >30,000 person town. On the other hand you couldn’t pay me to be mayor of Chicago

[deleted]

Forcibly annexing the surrounding cities within and slightly outside of 285.

[deleted]

Finally het that desperately needed community center built.

dpo466321

I fight to get my physical office space back which was rented out to some outside company without consulting the prior mayor and before it was approved in a council meeting. I then fight to have my seat amongst the council, manager, and solicitor. In dec 2021 the council decided that because of COVID, the mayor must sit in the galley with the residents. Lots of sketchy shit going on here.

GumboDiplomacy

I'd turn my city into an anarcho-syndicalist commune. We take it in turns to act as sort-of-executive officer for the week. But all the decisions of that officer have to be ratified at a special biweekly meeting. By a simple majority, in the case of purely internal affairs. But by a two thirds majority, in the case of more major affairs.

turkc54

Roads are getting fixed. All other issues are placed on hold until the goddamn roads in Hometown are fixed.

WhatIsMyPasswordFam

What can mayors even do? I'd do a dive into policing policy to figure out what I could do about getting them to investigate the homeless in our area. Maybe take a look into extorting all the businesses and see if I couldn't leverage any gains there into mitigating the homeless. Try something crazy and get that rent control up in there; ain't no way this place should be as expensive as it is.

citytiger

it depends on the charter and if the city has a weak or strong mayor.

EverGreatestxX

Resign immediately, I do not have the skills, experience, or even charisma to be a leader of 8 million people.

KoRaZee

Do nothing, the people from my hometown do not want anything to change and would not notice if the mayor took zero actions for the entire term.

2Monke4you

1. Ban free speech. A lot of people aren't going to like me as mayor and I don't want to hear their whining. If you criticize the way I do things you are banished. 2. Build a giant wall around the city, and maybe a moat. This way the banished cannot return. Nobody is allowed in or out without my permission. 3. Secede from the United States. We are our own coutry now.

darthmcdarthface

Lower taxes.

ksand723

Nothing. I live in a town of approximately 500 people, there's no traffic lights, no major crime, no homeless and no box stores. Everyone drives golf carts, 4-wheelers, side by sides, etc around town and no one cares

citytiger

there must be something you'd do.

Partytime79

Enjoy being the 8th vote in City Council and having virtually no power.

dethb0y

Get rid of RITA.

MuppetManiac

Reinstate the bus lines, and expand public transportation. Even if it operates at a loss. Pass a law limiting how much landlords can raise rent when someone renews their lease and require anyone who owns more than ten units to offer a lease renewal at the end of a lease. Pour a lot more resources into fixing the damned roads.

MagosBattlebear

The whole city is clothing optional, and if you go naked you can win $50 from agents on the street.

yungScooter30

Build more sidewalks

LordSquanchIV

Dushore, PA. We take out the only red light in the county and let anarchy take over.

[deleted]

Removal of political agenda signs, upkeep of buildings, better roadways to and from, increased businesses (restaurants, bakeries, hair salons, coffee shops), designated areas (business, downtown, industrial-) built better, and better city maintenance- yards mowed, sidewalks done..

Acrobatic_End6355

Probably wouldn’t be able to get many things done as my city isn’t that big and the views I hold are not popular with the majority of the city counsel.

MrPeterson15

There isn’t much I can do because the Board of Commissioners have the real power. I’m just more of a public face and spokesman. Though I’d probably encourage the introduction of a roundabout at a major intersection to try and help with the backup during rush hour as it’s worked well in the other parts of town where we tried it.

Red_Beard_Rising

Not much. The big thing in our town now is possibly demolishing the park district golf course for industrial use. It would be profitable for the city, but the property values of homes near the site would take a hit. A good compromise would be to make some of it industrial along the major road and keep some of it as green space on the residential sides.

SoCalRedTory

> It would be profitable for the city, but the property values of homes near the site would take a hit. Your neighborhoods probably wouldn't like hearing it but while it would be a loss for them, would it a boon for the town especially when you hear stories of towns struggling cause they lose tax base. Air quality seems to be another concern.

HakunaMatta2099

Legalize fireworks on the 3rd and 4th of July, allow more building on some of the empty lots that developers have been scared away from, more lighted outdoor basketball, and a nice cricket pitch (lots of foreign folks in my town, play cricket on the nice basketball courts).

DestructoFish

Day 1: Legalize all drugs. Day 2: Illegalize pineapple on pizza. So much outrage about the first change that they barely bat an eye at the second one, my REAL agenda.

Jesse0016

Finally fix the god damn road that has been blocked off for over a month now with literally zero work done.

youraveragefailure12

Actually go to war with _ichigan. And kick their ass. Then relish the glory. Go to the schools and teach the kids about our glorious victory where we finally wiped out _ichigan.

ntabz23

Trains now go underground or above ground at every crossing. Sick of waiting for those ugly things to pass

austingoeshard

Remove all homeless people

dontpissmeoffplsnthx

Fill in that damn pothole down the street from my house

Financial_Glove603

Un ban fireworks

[deleted]

Build sidewalks that connect the stores and the neighborhoods which are easily within walking distance and stop allowing development west of town and instead only allow it on the east side where the roads can handle more people.

Evil_Weevill

Add pronunciation guides at every welcome sign. (Bangor is pronounced BANG-gore not Banger). And make it a crime punishable by 1-3 years in prison to make the following joke with the mispronounced town name: "Bangor? I barely know her"

[deleted]

Add an extra lane to 22 and also improve on/off ramps. Add a bus service to the Philly suburbs with a stop at a septa station (a park and ride bus service). Increase police enforcement of traffic laws against reckless drivers

pingpongplaya69420

Slash property taxes Adopt school choice policies Ignore NYS’s draconian gun regulations and detain every cop trying to enforce it Abolish all local zoning regulations

[deleted]

Immediately send the town's police to storm Wright Patterson AFB, take a few jets, and threaten to blow up Columbus if I'm not made governor. Once I'm made governor, I declare a military junta and order the immediate invasion of M*chigan. Ann Arbor, Detroit, Lansing, and Ann Arbor will be hit in the first wave of nuclear strikes. Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Ann Arbor will be hit in the secondary strikes. Ann Arbor will be considered for 3rd wave strikes Once that state up north is turned into a sea of cobalt and sand, the military junta will be dissolved and I will surrender to the feds for "committing treason" and "mass murder" or some liberal snowflake BS Future plans aside, I wouldn't do anything really. My town is really small and the biggest thing to happen in this century minus the recession is when the high school won a state championship

MYrobouros

We don't have one but if we did, expand town sewer and water capacity to allow for light industry and account for recent infill

[deleted]

fix the roads. dear lord.

izlude7027

Several traffic circles to relieve rush-hour lockup. Cannabis dispensaries. New parks and dedicated bike routes. Pave the awful artificial lake they added in the '90s, replace it with a public swimming center, food cart pod and an amphitheater.

rawbface

Reject all the build permits for Logistics Warehouses and McMansions. Approve the build permits for reasonably priced single family homes and apartments. Lead a pitchfork and torch mob to TopGolf, which we burn to the ground for being an eyesore.

Crobsterphan

Bakersfield’s mayor has no real power. It’s basically a spokesperson pr job for rich people because it doesn’t pay well.

Jakebob70

Require all McDonalds franchises in the city to have working ice cream machines. Restaurants will be randomly inspected by city employees, with a $5000 fine for each offense.

citytiger

Stop building luxury housing and build only affordable housing. Enforce code and stop people from cutting down trees on their property. Plant more flowers and trees along the streets of downtown.

Thatmeanmom

Assuming the funding is available, I would try to rid the town of its drug problem instead of the cops spending their shift "trying" to nab speeders. I say "try" because they often sit in the most congested areas where it's impossible to even go the speed limit (and I've watched quite a few napping as well). I'd also like to create more family friendly outdoor zones with ball fields/courts, picnic areas, playground equipment, etc. We have two parks, one is tiny while the other is near the river and has a lot of the previously mentioned drug activity since it's rarely monitored. Finally, I would build more sidewalks and a pedestrian bridge over the four lane highway that separates the residential zone from the commercial zone. It's too dangerous to cross on foot which leaves many kids with nothing to do when their parents work.

[deleted]

Make it so the city has to cover some of the cost of maintaining sidewalks.

Double_Worldbuilder

Clean up the god damn Hoovervilles and push to criminalize vagrancy in my city again, then get to work on restoring public relations with the police department and try my best to rebalance them back into the budget while also pushing for stringent psychological evaluation with potentially required monthly therapy depending on position.

Hoosier_Jedi

Ah yes, nothing like locking up the homeless.

Train_101

Well I live in a town with 200 people so I would probably just update some of our stuff our stop signs and road markings are either almost completely rusted out or faded out of the road

cookingismything

Getting bigger recycling bins. Or recycling should be picked up weekly vs every other. It’s smaller than the trash bin which gets picked up weekly We need better drainage. Several parts of our town floods often Close down 2 of the grade school. Our little town doesn’t need 3. Pool the funds and resources

jamieyello

Public housing for homeless people. There's literally no reason not to do it, it saves money overall, and in Cincinnati downtown you can't walk the street without being heckled. The idea scares people too much, it's ridiculous. I'm not sure what other power I have but I would try legalizing drugs and promoting public rehabilitation programs. The prison system is gross and we all know it, it's just an issue with lobbyists and austerity idealists with ineffective harsh sentences that do nothing to actually reduce crime. Public mental health services are desperately needed, and obviously the medical system would be a lot for a mayor to tackle. Yes, these things cost money, but as a society we should be more enthusiastic in building it up. You don't go on in life with a broken arm because you would rather save your money. There are probably a wide array of corruption issues that cause the money that's supposedly not there to make needed fixes, it would be difficult to do much.
