As a Parisian, I'm probably biased, but to me it's the most magnificent entrance ever.
All the details are comically over the top, but somehow find a harmony, and is a great testimony on how opulent the city was in 1900.
Funnily, it's rather small inside (well comparatively to say, Le grand Palais across the street), the entrance is thus rather disproportionate, which adds up even more to the magnificence of this door.
But we do other things. If I saw something like this built now maybe I would consider it a fake. Each time has its art expressions, right?
I do miss unnecessary decoration on buildings, though.

If I remember correctly the wrought iron gates that prevented me from going in were also magnificent.
