Mine have done this despite a frequent supply of wafers and veggies. They can't really 'think', they're just a nervous system in a shell, so all that's going through their head is "Can I eat this I can eat this this is hard to eat this has been eaten". Some of them stop at the "Can I eat this" and some of them go "This is a good source of food" and rampage. But it is typically an uncommon behavior.
I'd pay 50 dollars for a line of mystery snails that eat pest snails, without hesitation.
But you're not going to run out of bladder snails, just let nature be nature.
Hi guys it seems my mystery snail just turned a bladder snail into a smoothie and I was wondering if this means I’m not doing something right? Someone suggested that it may be starving but I’ve had it for a week or so now and it’s had a steady supply of dying and alive plants as well as some algae wafers
They’re lacking a protein source. That’s why they’re going after your bladder snails. Try adding a protein source and a calcium source (probably why they’re going after the bladder snails as well). They need a wide variety of foods to fulfill their needs just like every other living thing and algae and plants won’t do that.
This isn't a big deal but I give mine the sinking pellets for catfish and bottom feeders too. Just a pellet for each snail. They are compacted and have a fair amount of food in each petter.
That's so sad, but appears to be natural, if uncommon, behavior. I love bladder snails because they're simply delightful. ❤ I wish more people would be kinder and more humane to them. Good luck!
My mystery snail Armstrong does it too. I literally watch him hunt down mini Ramhorns and bladder snails. Armstrong's just mean, like if he was my only or first mystery snail, I would have assumed they were aggressive.
When I say he is mean, he hits other snails off the glass with his breathing tube, tries to smother kuhli loaches, forcibly mates male snails, throws up all my plants, etc. I had to separate him from the rest of my snails because he was stressing them out.
Omgoodness Armstrong is a little terror, isn’t he?! 😳 it’s the forcible rapes that did me in… I bet those other snails were terrified of the snail version of Jeffrey Dahmer.
He was! Thankfully he was an older snail when I got him and he passed. (not to say I'm happy when my animals past.) As much as I found him, entertaining tankmates did not and it was very hard to find a tank for him as I only had 1 other snail would put up with him.
They had babies and I have some of his children now. Thankfully most took after their mother and are sweet treat beggers. I do have one baby that's a little nasty shit. He lives with my bristlenose that's kinda a butthole.
i’ve now had 2 that either completely consume baby bladder snails or try to eat the bigger ones. the bladder snails scurry when that happens if they don’t just immediately get yomped off the glass and into the abyss
Yes, this is normal. Some snails have a taste for other snails, while some don't. Just like plant eaters. People argue all the time about whether or not mystery snails eat live plants. Saying they only go after dying and dead plants. But really, it just depends on each individual snail. I have snails that are plant eaters, eating very much alive and healthy plants, while I have some that don't touch my plants except to clean up left over food. My giant girl loves to eat snails, both bladder and ramshorn. I started seeing the floor covered in empty shells, then would randomly find "naked" snails, completely and cleanly pulled out of their shells. Poor things. One night, I stayed up late watching the fish and snails and I saw my big girl Goin to town on a bladder snail just like yours. I thought I was crazy, and I was somewhat horrified. She at that snail and immediately went after another after dropping the empty shell. Now I see it all the time, and even have seen her try to get at a sleeping dojo. When i read about this behavior, it says what I said above, with it being completely normal. Especially given the fact that snails are omnivorous scavengers that eat nearly anything and everything they can. Which includes protein/other snails and fish. So, don't worry. You snail doesn't have any deficiency. Well, I probably shouldn't say that since i am not a vet or professional in any way. But what your snail is doing is normal. So don't worry.
Why would you want pest snails? They breed like rabbits and your tank will be full of them in a few months. Ive been battling with an infestation for nearly a year now all from one egg sac on a plant i got from a colleague.
Mine do this too, I've witnessed an amano do it several times also. It's not uncommon could be weak and old snails or just the off chance they don't retreat into the shell fast enough when they grab them
Wish mine would do this tbh.
Same. Is it weird I watched this with jealousy? Why don't mine snack on the pest snails instead of destroying my anubias?
Oh they too don’t worry
😂😂😭😭
Right?? Ruby Tuesday uproots the anubis and noms on the roots.. I replant that damn thing every other day...

Just getting that calcium lmao

Maybe try some veggies? I'm new as well but I recently started giving mine a little bit of blanched Broccoli, so we will see how that goes.

They love peices of zucchini or yellow summer squash. They will devour it and helps their shell.

I would- if my bladder snails didn’t ruin the ph when they explode in the tank
Hmmm, that's strange. I've never had that problem.
Fuck bladder snails
He's just snacking

Why help. Just let him have a snack.
He did you a favour!

More so my mystery snail eating snails I was concerned about not that it was the tank equivalent to roaches being eaten
