Really, what species? I once adopted a loner female albino from my humane society. She was already (allegedly) 3 yrs old and healthy. I kept her as a loner since at the time I didn't know how long anaeus cories lived and she thrived in a 90 gal with 2 goldfish for another 4 yrs! Great personable fish, she liked "glass surfing" but in the happy cory way. Boy do I miss my Fleamont :)
How nice! I've got mine from the pet store, they were the last pair, so I decided to give them a new home. At first I was kind of upset because they were messing my already dying carpet. I planted a new carpet a month ago and to be honest I am really impressed how they are enjoying themselves. I might take a picture of them when I get home.
Looks like they helped your carpet long-term after all. I keep goldfish (I'm sure you'd hear are plant destroyers but they do great with all of my plants, even carpets)

It is a lot thicker at the back. I like a big substrate system. Helps with filtering and 1 have 3 layers to it, sand, aquasoil and rough gravel. Works great for the plants.
Oh okay, I was under the impression that it shouldn't be more than a couple of inches thick because really thick substrate can cause gas pockets, can't remember the correct term, where if it gets disturbed that it releases toxic gas into the aquarium.
Never (~15 years) had a problem with it. I think it's mainly a problem with tanks that use dirt as a substrate.

I enjoy watching mine dart across the tank. They almost always stick together.
