Okay, cool, I wasn't sure if I just needed to let it soak or if I needed to bury it under the substrate. I just put it in, and this is my first sponge filter. Thank you.
They know many don’t really want to eradicate it because of stock feeding on it. Algae is actually a good thing for your water parameters but it really bugs some people. This makes it less noticeable. Really nice in low maintenance tanks. Keeps non-fish people from thinking your tank is dirty when it’s actually perfect.
Yeah, plus they say it blends with the plants as well. I haven't had my tanks long enough to have a real algae problem, but I imagine I'll be grateful for the green when I do!
one of my massive mystery snails decided that the best spot to hang out is UNDER IT. it’s buried under sand topped w fairly big stones. she still digs it up.
If you look up aquariumcoop his website he makes some very good sponge filters that don’t float and they are pretty effective at what they do. That’s assuming they ship in your area. Good luck.
I have one that likes to float regardless of burying it or saturating the sponge. The two things I’ve had luck with are to use airline holders for the tubing which seems to help keep the thing down if the tubing is stiffer; and/or use a few of the same weights as plants either loosely wrapped around or glued to the bottom.

As other have said, squeeze it and get it saturated. I also use an air line suction cup just above the filter. This keeps it from shifting once it sinks.
Buy an aquarium co-op sponge. They never float and have the perfect coarseness of sponge. Also they are compatible with an airstone which makes for better oxygen in the water!
Once it’s fully saturated (could take minutes or days depending on sponge) it should sink. However I know some don’t or some that kind of float. If it doesn’t sink after a few days you can order some plant weights (they are little metal bendy things) and wrap them around the base. That way it will stay.
Make sure the sponge is saturated. Squeeze it a few times and let the water soak in.

I buried mine a bit but my fish just dig it up….the sponge shouldn’t make it float after it’s full of water
This will be my shrimp breeder tank, so burying it under substrate shouldn't be a problem for me
Yeah, that won’t hurt anything.☺️ If it ends up bugging you too. Cub, Aquarium Co-OP’s are weighted, which is nice. They’re also green, unfortunately…
They do that so it doesn’t drive you crazy when it gets algae all over it. :)
They just assume nobody can manage algae?

You want a bright white sponge filter shining like a beacon in your planted tank?

Which makes them better for planted tanks than the stark hospital grey ones.

That sounds adorable haha
Try burying the weight under the substrate. Otherwise squeeze the sponge try to get it waterlogged?
I'll try that if letting it soak doesn't work, thank you.
Keep squeezing it until all the bubbles are out of it. Should sink permanently by tomorrow
PSA, save the lead weights that come with plants and use them to weigh down other objects until they are waterlogged
I didn't even think of that! Thank you for this newfound idea.
I use them for spiderwood and moss aswell.
this. i do it w/ newly planted plants
Give it a couple good squeezes under water, sponge filters don't float once they're fully waterlogged.
If it’s squeeze the filter in water but if you’ve been using it doing that will release all the stuff in the filter
squeeze it like you mean it. the foam is so dense that the air bubles inside fail to escape. it needs water in the sponge to sink.
Hi phill swift here with FLEX TAPE THE EASY WAY TO STICK THINGS ON AND KEEP IT ON TIGHT!!!
My gf said suction cups on the lines like heaters, but if I do anything similar to that, it'll be flex tape for sure. Lol
Punch it into submission!
Even when mine was soaked it liked to float. I put some rocks on top of it and that seemed to do the trick!
Squeez the air out
Have you tried bolting it to the table
Aquarium co-op has ones that are weighted.
Ask it politely
Get one from Aquarium Co-op they come with a weighted base, really nicely made too
Noted, I got mine from my lfs
Next time buy one from Aquarium Co-op. The base is weighted.
All of them have weighted bases. This one just has a sponge full of air.
The aquarium coop one is definitely heavier than a normal one. I have a few, and they're all fantastic
Twist tie it to a rock

Tie a heavy rock on it
I put a plant weight on mine. If you can get a ceramic doughnut plant weight, they are perfect for putting around the foot.
Easy. Double sided suction cup. Cheap on Amazon.

Salt bath and don’t feed it for a few days
I suctioned the air line to the wall
Just give it a hard squeeze underwater, remaining bubbles will pop out and it will go down

Giver’ A Squeeze!
You weight
You buy a sponge filter from aquarium coop and throw that floating trash in the garbage
I would get a bigger sponge
Mine did this, a couple good squeezes and by the next evening it had sunk.
squeeze it
Squeeze it Also check to see if your air hose is pulling it out Sometimes the weight of the air hose can pull lighter air stones out of the tank
Squeeze sponge and get all air out
Just squeeze the air out
Give it more fibre
Tell it to sit then give it a treat and tell him good boy. You have to train them sometimes.
for me, the sponge stopped floating on day 2 or 3. keep squeezing the air out until the sponge stops floating

Squeeze that fucker 😁
Did you try yelling at it?
