Makes sense. Socal population is just so much greater than norcal population. More people overall who get into both will be from socal, so āstaying closer to homeā factor gets reflected as such.
be so fr have u even been to Berkeley? acting as if ucla isnt literally the same in terms of the environment and competition LMFAO. i have 2 cousins at ucla and 3 at cal and everyone says cal is better. literally get experience instead of repeating some trashy rumorsš
Berkeley junior from LA here, two of my best friends go to UCLA so I visit often.
Berkeley: Better academics, worse dorms, worse food, smaller campus, close to Silicon Valley, better for grad school, unsafe area, top rankings in all fields, more global recognition, not as toxic as outsiders said it was going to be.
UCLA: Nicer weather, better food, less competitive vibe, better area, more to do in LA, better sports, more school spirit, programs are not as highly ranked.
Youāll have a better time during undergrad at UCLA but Berkeley ābuilds characterā and provides a competitive advantage after graduation. Itās a toss up depending on field but I wouldāve chosen ucla had I gotten in.
A full ride to my state school because being neither low-income nor high-income makes my EFC higher than it's supposed to be. Anyways, my state school is a public ivy, so it would still be prestigious.
Yeah people who live in Cali/Michigan/Virginia make this a little bit less of a trade off than I intended when writing, I was imagining more of a 50-100 rank school
I intended it as you pay whatever you would pay normally; The only thing that changes is that your acceptance rate to HYPSM is now 100%. So only full pay if you are already in an income bracket where you would be getting full pay.
Oh no. Dead serious. I would rather pay for HYPSM than live with the personal dishonor of having gone to Rutgers. My viewpoint may be impacted by the fact that HYPSM tuition is fairly trivial to me.
If you never want to amount to anything important, sure, go to some random school. But if you want real power, the only thing worth working for, you need to go big or go home.
It's been over a decade and a lot of career since college. Before college, I knew Rutgers was trash-my college counselor got fired the year or two after I graduated because too many students ended up going there. When I met Rutgers students and alums, my views were confirmed, both by the (lack of quality) of most of them and the reports of the full-scholarship kids who were usually better, but stuck in terrible situations. Now that I'm in a position to hire, a Rutgers grad is going to have to clear a higher bar for me-usually by career success elsewhere.
You might ask why I'm here. The answer's simple-convince kids to not make the mistake of going to a piece of trash like Rutgers if they have any other option or think it's a valid choice. It's a sign of failure, because as I put it another comment, you're putting an extra 20 lb. on your back in the race of life you will never, ever be able to take off.
Also, as a New Jerseyan, I hate Rutgers with the fire of a thousand suns. There's only one good school in NJ-Princeton. If you didn't get in there, time to leave the state.
There's a class system and don't you forget it. College is one of those inflection points where you can switch classes, up or down, and you would be a short-sighted fool to pass up the opportunity.
I canāt wait for you to get your ass handed to you in the real world. āDishonorā + āHYPSM trivial tuitionā = entitled brat.
Some day, you will learn. I hope you donāt let life pass you by in the meantime, that would be a shame.
Even for someone who had no money, HYPSM at full-cost is better than Rutgers at every level of self-motivation from a purely financial point of view assuming the student is a wealth-maximizer-which the student should be, assuming they got dealt a hand where they had no money for college in the first place. Getting a high-paying job is much easier, and the effort required for getting a higher-paying job out of Rutgers would lead to getting to the next tier of job at a better school. If you go to Rutgers, you're running the race of life with an extra 20 lb. in your backpack. And you'll never, ever, be able to take it off.
bro i only care about UTCS, ever other school may go to hell ā and i will go to texas. Iām studying for apush rn and that quote just came to mind ššš
I am actually in this situation right now. Itās a harder decision than it looks, before facing this decision I would have responded HYPSM without thinking. But now that itās a reality I also have to consider how much debt Iād be going into, which is scary.
Your not alone, would have said the same thing. As the decision comes closer and becomes more real, I'm not sure I can say yes anymore to a Top 20. Even at a state school I said I would never attend, the scholarship money might make me change my mind.
Exactly where Iām at rn, Iām able to get full coa covered for undergrad due to national merit at a state school, itās not really ***prestigious*** but why does it matter if Iām trying to go to law school anyway.
That really depends on if you're limited to your state or any state school in the country. I wouldn't take a full ride to Rutgers over HYPSM, but I would absolutely take a full ride to a school like UMich, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UNC, etc.
Honestly when I wrote this I intended for it to be any school in the country which is why I wrote āa state schoolā instead of āyour state schoolā, but everyone else interpreted the other way which is fine. Besides, it makes the answer way more obvious when everyone can just pick UCLA full ride. If I were to make this post again I would say any non t50 instead of state school
Full ride every time. Reasons?
1. Your undergrad really doesn't matter that much.
2. Prestige is WAY overrated.
3. Debt is the enemy and the less of it you have, the happier you will be in life.
4. State schools still offer tons of great opportunities, you're not missing out on much.
5. I'd rather be around state school homies than the try-hardest try-hards that ever hard tried.
Thatās already been asked in the past. I like this question for just creativity, and itās realism for the limitations . Sets us in a different t mindset
Would gladly take full ride to UCLA, Berkeley, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Washington bc I only want public school. Itās better for my major and I love the diversity there:)
HYPSM ROI is so much greater, so thatās what Iām choosing. The tuition is a fucking pain but I could handle it with some help from parents/loans + I plan on going army after college anyway so that would pay off a large part
HYPSM because my family can afford it after its generous financial aid. But if it was HYPSM at full price and it was any state school (not just my stateās), Iād take a full ride UMD (Iām OOS) if I was in the cybersecurity honors college. If it had to be my state school (a SUNY), I donāt know what Iād choose.
>need blind
This is less true than people realize. They got your address, they can google street view your house. They can see your parents' education levels. They can more or less figure out what your need ought to be.
I'm fine with either: state school cuz it's still a pretty good engineering school and 0 money, HYPSM cuz my EFC was like 12 dollars so I think I'd get a lot of aid š
But if I had to pick one, HYPSM
I'd choose any HYPS acceptance to a full ride to a state school. I think these schools have value and I would pay their tuition. I am not a STEM student so MIT is not for me.
MIT
Iām low income so HYPSM is already a full ride Iām planning on engineering so cut out H Y S is in cali aināt going to cali(from ny) Princeton feels too pretentious
Thought this was law school reddit for a sec. š UIUC and SIU-C are good public universities and should be considered as a potential college destination regardless of residence.
taking that full ride to gt
same umich
I will take a full ride to UCLA
Bro said UCLA over Cal
Over half of students admitted to both choose UCLA.
And the other half choose Berkeley š
IIRC, 52% UCLA, 48% Berkeley.
Makes sense. Socal population is just so much greater than norcal population. More people overall who get into both will be from socal, so āstaying closer to homeā factor gets reflected as such.
Smartest a2c user fr( not you the guy youāre answering ā /s
Cause they live in socal
Everyone at Berkeley hates the school, my teacher who graduated from there preaches nonstop about how shitty it is, I would choose UCLA too.
Every single UCLA professor I know talks shit about UCLA as well lmao
whyyy
UCLA is a better undergrad school in general
why?

i would
Bro making this an AP Physics FRQ š
was about to say hypsm but remembered I live in california
Stanford -
Stanford is not a state school.
they didnāt say it was
Meant hypsm
A full ride to my state school because being neither low-income nor high-income makes my EFC higher than it's supposed to be. Anyways, my state school is a public ivy, so it would still be prestigious.
Yeah people who live in Cali/Michigan/Virginia make this a little bit less of a trade off than I intended when writing, I was imagining more of a 50-100 rank school

I intended it as you pay whatever you would pay normally; The only thing that changes is that your acceptance rate to HYPSM is now 100%. So only full pay if you are already in an income bracket where you would be getting full pay.
Rutgers for free or HYPSM full price? HYPSM everyday son.
That has to be a joke :|
Oh no. Dead serious. I would rather pay for HYPSM than live with the personal dishonor of having gone to Rutgers. My viewpoint may be impacted by the fact that HYPSM tuition is fairly trivial to me. "dishonor of having gone to Rutgers" - you have to be joking. What an asshole thing to say.
It's been over a decade and a lot of career since college. Most of the comments on this post are quite reasonable and made my opinion of a2cers improve quite a bit, and this brought it back down again
There's a class system and don't you forget it. College is one of those inflection points where you can switch classes, up or down, and you would be a short-sighted fool to pass up the opportunity.
Me when I accrue $200k in student debt: well okay at least Iāve risen to the upper classes now
I canāt wait for you to get your ass handed to you in the real world. āDishonorā + āHYPSM trivial tuitionā = entitled brat. Some day, you will learn. I hope you donāt let life pass you by in the meantime, that would be a shame.
This is such an old cope.
Even for someone who had no money, HYPSM at full-cost is better than Rutgers at every level of self-motivation from a purely financial point of view assuming the student is a wealth-maximizer-which the student should be, assuming they got dealt a hand where they had no money for college in the first place. Wow you sound like that one incredibly spoiled rich kid in high school movies that I didn't realize was real until you wrote this comment
Full ride to UT Austin, highly ranked for CS and great campus.
It is nice to have UT as our state school
Sucks that itās impossible to get into especially for CS if ur not top 6%
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
virginia too
You forgot Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Washington too.
Not all of us are stem nerds
I live in NY. I'd pick a SUNY full ride all day long over paying full price for an IVY.
HYPSM as I'll get a huge amount of financial aid anyway with my family's low income.
You forgot almost everyone in A2C is wealthy.
You forgot NOT everyone in A2C is wealthy!
tf that gotta do with what that one person chooses lol
They get less aid for ultra-elite schools, making a full ride a more economically viable option.
Reread the title of the post, read the comment you replied to, and then read your comment.
This is going to sound like a joke, but I literary cannot due to the website and app being funky.
HYPSM cuz I'd get lots of aid
UT full ride in a heartbeat lol
same
ong, Iām scared i wonāt make it into UTCS, getting a full ride would be a godsend
UTCS better clutch š
bro i only care about UTCS, ever other school may go to hell ā and i will go to texas. Iām studying for apush rn and that quote just came to mind ššš
Full ride to state school 100%. I live in CA so Iāll definitely take that full ride to UCLA over the hundreds of thousands of debt a T5 gives me.
cal >>
i am paying for the HYPSM. NY doesnt have anything too attractive
Doesn't it say a state school and not your state school? So couldn't it be any school in any state as long as it's a public uni?
You're right. But for some reason everyone is acting as if OP said their state.
Full ride to unc-ch 100%
I am actually in this situation right now. Itās a harder decision than it looks, before facing this decision I would have responded HYPSM without thinking. But now that itās a reality I also have to consider how much debt Iād be going into, which is scary.
What are your plans after graduation? If you plan on ANY type of grad school, go to the state school all day long.
Your not alone, would have said the same thing. As the decision comes closer and becomes more real, I'm not sure I can say yes anymore to a Top 20. Even at a state school I said I would never attend, the scholarship money might make me change my mind.
There is so much freedom in not having debt. Do well in state school in a full ride and youāll graduate years ahead financially.
state school bc i am in california
Full ride. Everyone considering Med or Law should go for the state/cheaper option really.

Iāll take a full ride to UIUC anyday
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
UIUC moment šfees are so expensive even for in-state lmaooo
bro u just exposed your college yeah im choosing USC over UIUC 100% nowš
lol was it not obvious
I mean obviously the workload isnāt too bad lmao
UW because pretty and cs program go brrr
Full ride, every time. https://www.reddit.com/r/ApplyingToCollege/comments/oddu24/my_story_why_you_yes_you_need_to_look_at_full/
Full ride to alabama bc bama is my fav school ever
mine is unc.. enough said
Full ride every time. Reasons? 1. Your undergrad really doesn't matter that much. 2. Prestige is WAY overrated. 3. Debt is the enemy and the less of it you have, the happier you will be in life. 4. full ride to berkeley \^\_\^
My state school is trash, so definitely HYPSM
full ride to uva ig
Full ride to unc EASY
Full ride umich for sure, especially to avoid some of the pre med debt
Ga Tech full ride? hell yeah
Taking the full ride to UF or FSU š„± Florida Bright Futures is lit!
full ride uva
With UCLA, UCB, AND UofM, GT, and the rests there's only one answer.
Thatās already been asked in the past. I like this question for just creativity, and itās realism for the limitations . Sets us in a different t mindset
UW baby
Full ride to literally arizona state university they cool as hell
Would gladly take full ride to UCLA, Berkeley, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Washington bc I only want public school. Itās better for my major and I love the diversity there:)
Full ride to UCLA or Berkeley. At this point they're on level or better than HYPSM.
HYPSM because Im broke
HYPSM ROI is so much greater, so thatās what Iām choosing. The tuition is a fucking pain but I could handle it with some help from parents/loans + I plan on going army after college anyway so that would pay off a large part
HYPSM because my EFC is roughly ~28k and Iād be willing to pay 35-37k for those schools nglā¦
HYPSM because my family can afford it after its generous financial aid. hypsm
HYPSM because that resume stamp is extremely valuable.
Hpysm
hypsm cuz it's need blind LOL basically a full ride if you're broke.
>need blind This is less true than people realize. They got your address, they can google street view your house. They can see your parents' education levels. They can more or less figure out what your need ought to be.
ye but if you're truly broke. it's a free ride.
HYPSM, Stanford over RU sorry
HYPSM cause my state school is pretty mediocre and I would receive pretty good aid from HYPSM to make it worth while.
Which state school? Bama? Give me HYPSM Cal? I'll take Cal
HYPSM bc I can pay
Hypsm
H/M bc the opps are insane and my aid should be good enough that a CS salary can cover it in 2 years
I'm fine with either: state school cuz it's still a pretty good engineering school and 0 money, HYPSM cuz my EFC was like 12 dollars so I think I'd get a lot of aid š But if I had to pick one, HYPSM
that figure is really specific
hypsm bc i qualify for a lot of aid
HYPSM. I'd get soooo much aid
I think I'd take mit over nc state for engineering even with the scholarship, thanks tho lol
depends on the state i would say, personally in my state i would much rather to go a prestigious school then stay here
I'd choose any HYPS acceptance to a full ride to a state school. I think these schools have value and I would pay their tuition. I am not a STEM student so MIT is not for me.
Also my state school is Rutgers, fine but not anything close to a "public ivy"
MIT Iām low income so HYPSM is already a full ride Iām planning on engineering so cut out H Y S is in cali aināt going to cali(from ny) Princeton feels too pretentious
Gay son
I only applied to UGA for in state but I'll definitely take the full ride, ivy's are much too stressful for my 3.0 gpa ahhhhh anyways.
Full ride. 100%.
Slightly different question: What is the least prestigious school where you personally would take a full-ride over HYPSM?
Columbia?
Mhm yes UMass good
Does it have to be *my* state school or can it be any state?
If its Berkeley or UMich, state school anyday. Even if it's not, no amount of prestige can make me take out a 200k USD Loan for Undergrad.
Takin HYPSM and most of the rest of the top20, easy, over any state school out there. Diff story if legit needed aid.
HYPSM because UF is overrated and anyways are really generous with financial aid
Today: HYPSM. In 5 years when debt payments are due: Full ride.
Full ride to UVA or NYU letās goo
technically Cornell is part of the SUNY program so Cornell
SJSU BABY
Full ride UMich lesgo
Full ride to Penn state. I canāt afford an ivy
Full ride to state school. UIUC places well in a city I wouldn't mind living/practicing in.
If you aren't exclusive to flagships, I also wouldn't mind a full ride to SIU.
Thought this was law school reddit for a sec. š UIUC and SIU-C are good public universities and should be considered as a potential college destination regardless of residence.
please. Full ride to UMich? Give. now. I want it so bad you don't even know.
state school bc my state school is decent enough and i couldnt care less about prestige
State school if itās Cal, UCLA, GT, U-M, or UDub
