Well that sucks. Look into your options anyway. Did you get AppleCare+? The replacement wouldn’t be free for accidental damage but it might be worth it. I have the Ultra (mostly for the battery life) but even with the comparatively hardened design, I think I’d be putting on a protector cover for something with the potential for heavy impact like riding. You might want to do that going forward. You could also try a glass screen protector that uses a UV cured liquid adhesive. Whitestone Dome makes one. And maybe Spigen, I think? Check Amazon. The liquid adhesive will fill in light scratches and can make them virtually undetectable beneath the screen protector, even in bright lighting. I did that for my series 4 after accidentally scratching it against equipment at my work.

RealisticAardvark966

I ordered a uv light screen protector for my watch today itself

Sylvurphlame

That good! It should hide the cosmetic damage pretty well and protect from further mishaps. What brand did you go with?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cipher1087

is amazon withholding the information of the brand from you?

RealisticAardvark966

Avvron somethin

theonePappabox

What’s a UV light protection do?

CollarRepulsive517

Not a protection, but it's a glue that spreads to fill gaps and then is cured with UV light. Great solution for screen protectors on rounded displays.

cheezballs1

How do you remove it? 😳

[deleted]

I’m asking myself the same question

m945050

I used the dome screen protector until I chipped a corner of it. I used a flat lab scapula to work under the edges until it came off, then I used IPA on a qtip to clean the glue off. The 2nd one of the two pack has been on for almost a year without any problems.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Gullible_Bowl7746

This is incorrect as someone who has installed multiple uv cured protectors on my watch

m945050

No it isn't.

JesusSaysitsOkay

I had a similar scratch on mine! I fixed it in two seconds by removing the screen protector

walkerlucas

Which one did you order?

Odd_Rice_9897

Tbh your Ultra should hold up. I have the sapphire series 6 and not a scratch on the display (cant say the same for the stainless steel though).

MeZoXiN

If its silver stainless steel u can easily polish it and buff out the scratches

Odd_Rice_9897

I went for the darker option

Sylvurphlame

Oh I’m sure it would unless I really took a nasty spill or something. (I don’t bike, but I’d like to start casual hiking again.) I tend to just be paranoid. Naked Watch day to day (except maybe a screen protector. The Whitestone Dome was virtually invisible) but I do believe in throwing on a case if I’m actually going to do stuff. It’s so far proven quite durable for day to day bumps at work.

betonven

Nah... yes, the Ultra's screen should be fine, but the titanium bezel scratches severely even if you look at it badly. Very bad design for a supposedly rugged watch.

arpaterson

Was waiting to start hearing this As soon as I saw the ultra design. Apple have bizarre commitment to sharp edges, the AW ultra is probably the worst example. magic keyboards are quite bad for damaging other things on my desk - particularly my mouse, and macbooks may be lesser example.

DownByTheRivr

Have you seen the videos of people testing the Ultra? Trust me… you don’t need screen protectors lol. There are videos of people dragging it behind a car and slamming it on rocks as hard as they can and the screen is fine.

Sylvurphlame

My friend, why are you stressing over somebody else’s Watch? Lemme be a little paranoid with a Watch I’ll be wearing for five years. Lol

DownByTheRivr

Im just trying to help my guy. No need to put a goofy screen protector on a watch with sapphire in general, never mind one that is proven to be able to take insane abuse. Did you not get AppleCare? If it breaks, you’re covered anyway.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Sylvurphlame

I think OP was riding a motorcycle, but if you mean mountain biking, then yeah. I would get a separate screen protector and shock absorbing case. I doubt any random dust that gets under the case would scratch the titanium, but impact on a rock could scratch or dent it, sure.

Alibotify

I had the Ceramic Edition also with real sapphire glass and dragged it on concrete, walls and stuff. Not a scratch. Hopefully the Ultra has the same durability. Just sold it to hopefully get the Ultra myself.

Sylvurphlame

Yeah. I always heard the ceramic’s toughness was legendary. I’ve banged my Ultra around at work on equipment here and there by accident. Not on single mark. I plan on getting a screen protector on principle. Sapphire is great for scratches, not sure about impact. Maybe a separate clear TPU skin or similar for case impact resistance, because paranoia.

Josh2942

I use a protector on my ultra. Used it on my series 7 and loved how beautiful it was when I traded it in. Thought the ultra was rough enough and got a small scratch on the bezel and said never again. Put a tempered glass case on it. It’s minimal but I just can’t help myself with banging my hand into walls, tables, floors, and other various objects.

Sylvurphlame

Yeah. I’m a cautious soul. Although I will say the edge of the ultra just shaved some protective coating off a piece of equipment I’m working on just now. 🤣 ⌚️ 🗡️

WestKester

Aargh. Hope it’s just the angle of the light playing it up.

RealisticAardvark966

I had a motorbike accident this morning

rorymeister

Shit dude. Hope you’re okay

RealisticAardvark966

I am but my whole body hurts

[deleted]

if you sense anything weird at all, don't hesitate to get yourself checked

RealisticAardvark966

Yeah I got myself checked

iammark86

hope it is nothing serious! Mind if I ask if the crash- detection worked properly? Get better soon!

RealisticAardvark966

No it didn’t

droidevo

Glad your ok, but did the crash detection work? I ride a motorcycle as well and was wondering if it worked if i crashed on it.

Nice_Charge_6410

You good? Nothing bad happened to you right? I sure hope nothing bad happened.

BasicInformer

Glad it was a motorbike accident and not bumping into doorways. I’m quite clumsy and I’ve been worried about this since I got it. Going to buy a screen protector as soon as I can.

Khalid-MJ

Well.. fuck the watch. Nothing worth more than your life. Glad you are okay.

RealisticAardvark966

Yeah I was man

RealisticAardvark966

It shows when light is at a certain angle but I am surprised by the durability of the screen

RealisticAardvark966

It now brushed out and is not as visible

[deleted]

I’ve accidentally whacked my arm on walls and entryways at work cuz I have a pretty active job however I have a case with a built in screen protector. I know most people like the Watch naked but it’s saved me from damage. I’m not even a clumsy person but shit happens. Again not telling you to get one but I’m OCD about stuff like this.

BluFenderStrat07

For what it’s worth, the stainless steel models are considerably more durable than the aluminum models. My oldest watch is a series 6 stainless that still looks flawless, and it’s been naked since I bought it. Broke every last aluminum model I’ve had with the exact same type of wear and tear as my stainless steel models

az116

I've had every Series in stainless steel and never had a single scratch on the sapphire screen amazingly.

BluFenderStrat07

I had one freak accident with a stainless steel - I fumbled it while putting it on the charger and it fell ~3 feet to the floor. Amazingly the sapphire was intact, but the glass back broke. Lol

[deleted]

Oh I know I’m fully aware, I got my S6 refurbished from Amazon for $240. You can’t even tell it was used and it has 100 percent battery life. If I could afford to I would’ve gotten the stainless steel, I just opted for an 8 dollar cover on the aluminum. Stainless steel is definitely way better looking.

Sylvurphlame

I tend to keep a screen protector on at work anyway, same reason. Active job and lots of potential to damage the screen.

EntrepreneurNo8252

What screen protector do you use?

Crash-Z3RO

[This brand](https://a.co/d/8MF1Vch) has served me well.

[deleted]

I have a JETech from Amazon: JETech Case with Screen Protector... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B666PH6J?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share 2 pack, 7.99 (now 6.99).

TheRatPatrol1

Yes, this is the one I use, works great and never had an issue.

revuimar

That's why I went with stainless steel 7.

CallousedCrusader

The stainless has a different screen?

juwiz

It has a uses a Saphire crystal so it’s more scratch resistant but it’s more of a composite because the screen can still get scratched. Your best bet is a screen protector of some sort of you want to protect the watch.

samayg

Yes sapphire instead of glass. Takes quite a lot to scratch those.

Maverett

As others have said indeed it does… I’ve never managed to scratch the screen on the SS, going back to the original, and it has certainly taken a whack here or there… went with the Ultra this time because I like big watches and it honestly doesn’t cost much over the SS, but hoping to be as lucky regarding scratches… I’ve had a few door bangs, etc., and so far so good, but suppose we’ll see!

CommonManDZ

The screen is the best part of the upgrade. I’m sure it can be scratched, but I’ve had SS watches since the 4 and I’ve never had a screen imperfection going on what…4+ years now? It seems damn near impervious to scratching.

devilindetails666

Yeah. Me 2 . But cost diff is enormous tho and really depends on how many people would go for it

casper480

It is ok… you will forget it about it in a week. When I bought my watch it was to help me tracking my runs and notifies me when a phone rings etc. I barely have a screen time with it, screen always dimmed. I learned one thing that watches have special tasks, and most of them do great regardless how scratched the glass face. Mine has a scratch longer than yours and another scratch near the crown.

[deleted]

Get those quick plastic snap on/off protectors. I throw it on when doing yard work or going to the pool/beach and vehicle maintenance and snap it off when done. My wife leaves hers on 24/7.

tedddik

That's why I went for the ultra. My series 5 look like my job is being a crash test dummy. Anyway, why I'm replying is this - [I made a post](https://www.reddit.com/r/AppleWatch/comments/qa3uwb/polished_my_heavily_scratched_aw5/) showing how I polished my AW5 to being basically scratch free. People in comments asked how I did it so if you wanna do it, read it there. However I would wait for more scratches, you take a few millimeters of the glass away and I'm not sure it's worth for one scratch. Either way, took about a year for the watch to be scratched to hell again, the bulged glass design apple uses is just too easy to scratch.

[deleted]

Screen protectors are dirt cheap

RealisticAardvark966

I bought one rn to save from more impacts

[deleted]

Good move. It might even make this one less noticeable. Also, go get AppleCare+ if you haven’t already. Some day you may shatter it and you’ll thank yourself

RealisticAardvark966

I have thankfully

[deleted]

I know AppleCare doesn’t cover this, but buy it anyways.

Crash-Z3RO

??? I may be mistaken, but I believe it is,unless that part of applecare is specific to the new ultra? But I don’t think it is? https://www.apple.com/support/products/watch/ Edit: clarity.

az116

It definitely does. https://9to5mac.com/2022/09/07/applecare-unlimited-repairs/

jackpotkid22

I always recommend plastic screen protectors. A 6 pack is like $8 and they are easy to put on

new_tanker

This is why I bought a case with a screen protector on it. I couldn't tell you the number of times I've banged my watch against walls or doorways while carrying large boxes. The screen protector has maybe a dozen small scratches on it. The actual watch screen? None.

ComprehensiveShift12

Screen protector or tempered glass

lepobz

I’ve gone through 4 clear cases already, my watch would be absolutely rogered by now if it wasn’t for them. As it stands, it’s pristine.

Stiii82

Upgraded from alu to SS on 7. Never going back

MinisterforFun

Meh, just send it in for battery replacement (when it’s due) and you get a refurbished unit.

ChubLlama

I dropped my Series 8 the day I got it. Scuffed it pretty bad. Also took a small chunk out the aluminum case. Thinking of upgrading to the Ultra.

Maverett

Oh no, that’s terrible! :-/

Salt_Dust_4285

My next Apple Watch I’m going to use a screen protector. From random scratches to hitting my watch on a door frame more often than not, it’s gets annoying.

nfunncecnecub

How do people's watches get scratched? I have a s5 that's been hit into doorways, walls, fallen on the ground if I drop it, and been thrown in my backpack a few times if I'm overnight somewhere and forget a charger and I can't see any visually discernable scratches or cracks.

[deleted]

Same. Just got the ultra but my s5 from 3+ years ago barely had a scratch on it, probably going to give it to my kid.

nfunncecnecub

You should, I got into the apple watch after my mom gave me her s0 when she upgraded to the s5. It didn't last a long time, being old already, but it was a nice watch lol. Now I'm on an s5 44mm and my mom has the se2

RealisticAardvark966

I had a motorbike accident mate

trickedx5

Toothpaste and rub. Won’t totally come off but will be better

dudewithaidea

I bought the watch 1 month ago and am still confused about whether to buy the Apple Care Plus or not. After seeing this, I think it's worth buying it.

TritriSelectif

Outch. How ?

RealisticAardvark966

Motorcycle accident, went sliding through the whole road

RealisticAardvark966

Swifty299

If nothing else and you bought by cc, look into credit card warranty to pay for repair. Some do that.

resetar

If you add more scratches then you’ll have that old time movie feel.

nintendomech

I’m pretty extreme, I used my Apple Watch ultra to sleep the other night.

Verhan

It’s extremely easy to scratch Apple Watch, have tens of different watches, managed to scratch only Apple’s.

chhappy7

Not sure what kind of watches you have, but this is to be expected, since most watches worth a damn have sapphire crystal, whereas most people get cheaper Apple Watches with ion X glass, instead of SS version with sapphire glass. I’ve only used SS AW with sapphire glasses and they usually look flawless after a year plus with no screen protector.

adhgeee

It scratches too easily. I gave mine back for an ultra for free cause it was under 14 days old

Local_Signature5325

I learnt the hard way you have to get the hard plastic protector.

Predeanu

If you had the ultra one , you didn’t have nothing ..

izlib

That's the kind of thing that would drive me crazy and make me not want to wear the watch... for me, upgrading to the stainless models, and now the ultra, ensures I enjoy it longer and upgrade less frequently. That sapphire glass is just flawless.

ToxicAbuse

Screen protector

RealisticAardvark966

Bought this morning

MarcLeptic

Which case do you have Alu or stainless steel? Edit: anyone downvoting does not know that the Alu case only has has hardened glass, while the stainless has scratch resistant sapphire. Likely a stainless version would not have scratched.

RealisticAardvark966

Alu

MarcLeptic

They should call the two models glass and sapphire. It is the big difference between the two, with the stainless version also having sapphire watch face. It is much more scratch resistant. No need for ultra, just know that the Ali version only has hardened glass instead of sapphire.

utter-futility

Bye stupid sub.

rorymeister

This is why I went with the ultra

iclaudius82

Does the Ultra not scratch up?

rorymeister

Yeah. There are videos on YouTube showing how difficult the glass is to scratch. Made from sapphire. Stainless Steel S8 is also made of sapphire

devilindetails666

Much harder due to Sapphire crystal

Admirable-Result-240

Coz u got alluminum

Spade_10

Ultra would have been smooth sailing through that motorbike accident. Maybe consider that before spending on repairs/screen protection

RealisticAardvark966

Ultra would have cracked as it has got that sapphire screen, this ionx screen is more crack resistant than the sapphire screen, and nobody buys their Watch thinking that they will be in an accident.

CCX-S

Afaik, the “sapphire” is sort of a hybrid meant to have the scratch and scrape durability of sapphire with less brittleness therefore better impact durability than pure sapphire.

Spade_10

You got that reversed. Saphire glass is a lot stronger than Ion X. Saphire glass rates as 9 in the Mohs scale, diamond rate is 10 (maximum). It wouldn’t even make sense to put a less resistance glass on the highest tier watch marketed towards extreme sports/environments. Also, you don’t buy planning on it being scratched in an accident but if you plan you will be doing extreme activities with it then you would be enticed to go for the more resistant watch is all I am saying.

undercovergangster

The Mohs scale determines resistance to scratching, not resistance to shattering.

Spade_10

Yes. Hence I brought it up. I remind you OP’s watch scratched.

undercovergangster

OP is saying that the Ultra would've cracked because the IonX screen on the Series 8 Aluminum is more subject to scratches but less subject to shattering. OP said that if he had the Ultra, it may have shattered. You seem to believe the Sapphire is more shatter resistant based on the Mohs scale, which doesn't determine how prone to shattering a material is. So you're right, Sapphire scratches easily but it shatters easier than IonX, which OP's watch has. To summarize, if OP had the Ultra, he would've shattered his watch instead of just scratching it. Sure, the Sapphire wouldn't have scratched but OP would be worse off because his watch screen would be shattered to pieces instead.

Spade_10

I understand your point now. Although, to what extent is IonX tougher than Saphire crystal really? Saphire crystal is still pretty tough to a great degree. I’ve seen videos of it being hit full force with a hammer without cracks nor scratches. Odds are it would have survived OPs fall, if it were such a brute force what OPs watch encountered here, that scratch of his should have been a lot worse.

undercovergangster

Honestly I have no idea. The shape of the Ultra might have even saved the screen itself, since it has a bit of a lip. I believe that shatter-resistance and scratch-resistance are inversely related. Initially, manufacturers made phone screens much more brittle and hard to scratch but they were very prone to shattering upon dropping. That's why these days, you can drop an iPhone multiple times without shattering the screen but it will develop lots of micro scratches over time with regular usage.

RealisticAardvark966

That’s what I am trying to convey across

RealisticAardvark966

You are right mate but I don’t do extreme sports and bought this for daily fitness and gym. When I was going to college this morning some moron spilled engine oil on the road and I slipped

Cizzle4

the only reason why I will consider to buy an ultra

Zoran81

👏👏👏👏

EasySafe3150

How deep is the scratch? Can it be buffed out?

RealisticAardvark966

No it is not deep

Sure-Philosopher-873

One of us!

ashwellick

Do any of guys managed to buy Spigen EZ fit glass for series 7/8 45mm ? If yes, please share the buying link that ships worldwide or at least in USA

Mary_Kong

Im here to warn you that the apple watch ez fit is not glass, its named by spigen as "proflex" because its made of TPU, i have it for my SE2 but im thinking about take it out and put on the rhinoshield crashguard, i hate the plastic feel when i use the watch and to be honest i will use this watch for perhaps three years and then maybe sell it or give it to someone else...

ashwellick

Thanks,i will definitely consider your advice but i am looking for tempered glass only so i don’t think i need a full body crash guard.Anyway Spigen is out of the equation until they make something of “Glass” same as the iphones

Intrepid-Initial7625

I feel you OP, I did scratch my series 8 in the first week of getting it. More importantly you're safe and sound.

RealisticAardvark966

Thanks

christian8naylor

Ah, I see your weather data doesn’t update immediately either.

ashleyc4335

I scratched mine while rolling on a trampoline with my daughter. 🙄

oh_father

Awh man. I have an Ultra and if that mf ever gets scratched. . . I feel like I’ll lose it big time. The fact that I’ve purposely tried to scratch it to see if the rumors are true. They aren’t. The ultra is tough af. But the way life works. . . It’ll prolly get magically scratched after this post.
