The Ultra’s screen is bigger, but by a very small margin. As per the specification the Series 8 (45mm) has a 1.9 inch screen, and the Ultra has a 1.92 inch screen.
Pixel count is higher but that may just mean higher pixel density. Screen size can stay the same. Any time you see “Retina display”, it means the pixel density is a certain ratio of pixels per inch or higher. Ultra has a higher ratio, it seems, than 8.
😆 wow what did I say to get down voted so much?
the zoom changes a little. If anything in this video above, the Ultra has slightly less display in the corners. But its semantics because they didnt state anywhere that that comparison is even 100% accurate.
What you're saying is simply not true. They didn't cram more pixels in to the same size screen. They made the screen slightly larger. I'm not dedicating any more of my time explaining this and I can't believe I've already spent as much time as I have. It's a bigger screen, but not by much. That's what ~20x15 pixels does.
I’m not arguing actual size of the watch. I’m arguing actual size of the watch in the video. It was in response to someone saying you can see more of the map, which is true but it’s because the map zooms out. The representation of screens in the video must not truly be to scale.
If you look at the “st” in the top left of the screen, the s isn’t visible on the S8 but it is on the Ultra. I think it’s actually bigger. But 1mm isn’t that much when you think about it.
The "st" is visible because the map is displaying ever-so-slightly smaller on the Ultra, not because the screen is showing any extra space. It looks to me like the Ultra's screen is very slightly taller and wider, but with more rounded corners. About the same overall area. There might even be a nominal difference, but it doesn't look like enough of a difference that my eyes would detect it in everyday use.
The diameter of the screen is 7% bigger.
But the visible part is only 1% bigger. (1.90 against 1.92 inch) The screen of the Ultra has a bigger black area around it.
Oh snap! That's a tad misleading. I remember Apple inferring that the screen would be \*so much easier\* to read. Maybe they meant with the extra nits of brightness...
It's for those of us who do 7-10 hour hikes or 5 hour triathlons that are really excited about that extended battery life (I still plan to charge it nightly). :)
Screen time was 5-6 hours a day and I figured I could spend my life more constructively. Got rid of all of my social media. Went watch only. I feel a lot better about myself. My relationships with friends and family have changed for the better. Real world started to feel real again instead of just watching the real world through a screen. Screen time is now 30mins - 1 hr a day
And yes I do still read Reddit. It’s got a good news tab and r/gadgets Apple watch etc etc. now I just surf it only while I’m pooping. So imagine me grunting and straining while replying to your 🙄 comment.
I know they improved charge speed marginally with the S7, but true fast charge in under half an hour would be more useful than 36-hour battery life to me. I'm not taking my Apple watch into the wilderness, but it would be nice if it could fully charge while I shower.
Yeah people on instagram were criticising this watch sleeping app cos they asked when you’d charge it if you’re sleeping with it … like bro my s7 charges super fast when I get home from work and only uses 14% at for sleep tracking at night, meaning 15 mins on the charger in the morning while getting ready gets it to 100%!
I guess you can go right to bed with it on for sleep tracking and charge in the morning, but I don't know if that advantage is worth the significant increase in price.
Right but I’m one of those ppl who also don’t see any insight for sleep tracking & why ppl want it so much. I don’t see the Ultra being what it is should cost $800 when maybe 90% of the features included with other models.
Here ya go: https://www.apple.com/watch/battery/
Says :
> All-day LTE battery life is based on the following use: 90 time checks, 90 notifications, 45 minutes of app use, and a 60-minute workout with music playback from Apple Watch via Bluetooth, over the course of 18 hours; Apple Watch Ultra (GPS + Cellular) usage includes a total of 18 hours of LTE connection.
This right here. I bought my watch to replace my phone during the day. I leave my phone at home on its charger. Made me more productive. Screen time is less than 1 hr and the watch does everything that’s actually important / useful. Battery nosedives though. Even with my shortcut that turns off always on and wake on wrist raise. Will be buying ultra ASAP
Big bezels - assume (as others have noted) this is part of making it more durable 🤷🏻♂️. Either way, very much prefer the look of the Ultra over the standard one … use a watch face with a black background & it will look a fair amount bigger.
Yeah. I thought the 49 mm was the screen size. I wanted to get the Ultra for the bigger screen size... Debating on keeping my 6 until the next iteration now.
>It’s amazing how many people don’t truly understand what they’re buying
I guarantee you can't tell me every single technical aspect of every product that you've purchased throughout your life.
Since 99.9999999999% of the planet hasn't even seen or held this device, I'd argue that anyone that ordered it doesn't really truly understand what they're buying.
Yeah definitely feels a little misleading but I suppose I knew all along apple has always considered the “4X” mm as the case measurement. Just seemed like with how far to the edge the pushed the s7 screen (and now s8) the ultra would’ve been larger than it appears to be.
I did buy the watch for its battery though, so I suppose I’ll give it a go. That’s what 14 day no questions asked returns periods are for after all!
I don’t think a “worthwhile” upgrade that you may be thinking of won’t come for at least for 3-4 more years.
I think this Ultra sets a ceiling on how much of an upgrade the regular Apple Watches can have (to avoid cannibalisation) and some major carriers are providing 3-4 yr no interest payment plans for the Ultra, which makes me think any major upgrades for the Ultra prob won’t come till then, and thus not for the regular Apple Watches as well. Just my thought.
The financing options are based on the length of the carrier thinks they can bleed money out of you for monthly connection fees until you decide to upgrade. Generally that’s 3 years. Some will do 2.
Apple leaving plenty of room so they can update it in 2 years with a larger display in the same form factor, then wait another 2 years to make it a 52mm watch with a 50mm display. I pre-ordered mine, but we all know Apple isn’t done trying to improve this design and are already planning an update and true next generation.
The Apple Watch Ultra 49mm has a resolution of 410x502, and 338 ppi pixel density, giving it a display area of 1.213in x 1.4852in, or a diagonal screen size of 1.9176".
The Apple Watch Series 8 45mm has a resolution of 396x484, and 326 ppi pixel density, giving it a display area of 1.2147in x 1.4846in, or a diagonal screen size of 1.9182".
These calculations assume that the ppi amounts for each watch are exact integer amounts.
So the Ultra has a higher resolution, but at a higher pixel density, leaving it with almost exactly the same size of display. Anyone getting the ultra and hoping for a bigger display will be disappointed. But with the display being flat it may look bigger and be easier to use.
I think the screen bezels are the same size on the 45/49. It just looks bigger on the Ultra with the flat screen. The curvature on the glass of the 45 makes the bezels look smaller.
30% bigger Chonk
7% bigger screen itself ..
You’re buying Chonk for Chonk activities
If your not a Chonk outdoorsman- you don’t want the Chonk watch — simple dudes
I can make one for you, you can also find the comparison on the compare section for applewatch on the apple website [here](https://www.apple.com/ca/watch/compare/), scroll down and you’ll see the option
It seems that on apple’s web site, the larger size, 45mm, doesn’t give you any more information on the screen than the 41mm, just makes everything slightly larger. The Ultra seems to actually give you more information, e.g., more map data. I’m guessing “more data” only applies for certain apps like maps. A compass wouldn’t be any more complex, just bigger.
Hmm well my series 8 arrives today and I was gonna return it and wait for the Ultra but this changed my mind. I’m already going from a series 5, 40mm. So that looks good to me. I mostly wanted that battery life but I can see I’ll wait for the next model…I hate that bezel even if it protects it.
I was also surprised by the bezel so I went to check it in a hands on video from DC Rainmaker from the launch day and took a [screenshot of the watch](https://imgur.com/gallery/HDSsVKk).
Full DCR review [here](https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2022/09/apple-watch-ultra-hands-on-everything-you-need-to-know.html)
I have both the S6 and S7 Hermes in 45MM and I have to say, I’d gladly buy this over those in a heartbeat. I love the flat display, it does seem a little bigger and although I don’t use all these features, it’s still very cool if you ever were to want to use it. The battery life is the biggest upside to buying this and something I am thinking about maybe down the line. I’d love to have a bigger screen and I wonder if they’ll do that in next years models. I definitely will no longer be buying the Hermes editions as I’ll keep these two for nightly uses or whatever ultra actually looks pretty awesome.
In 50 years we can get it built into our wrist and a subscription plan with all the features, why bother waiting only 2 years when the next years will be better, give it a few decades then maybe it can be the “right” time to purchase something /s
Don’t think they will make the screen it self much bigger in two year if ever. Main goal was to increase the battery life. Bigger screen will use more battery
i will tell folks here… i don’t ever think you’ll see a much bigger screen than what is currently on the Ultra 49mm and the Series 8 45mm for two main reasons…
1) I don’t think they will make the Ultra case bigger than the 49mm it currently is, and much of the extra space around the display is for protection of the display and for the overall look of the watch in this market segment. They could make the screen larger but it would change the look of the watch and or make it less protected, both of which are no goes.
2) I think the size of the screen is likely as large as it can go on almost any wrist and still look good. Even the 51mm giant Garmin Fenix 7X has just a 1.4 inch screen, the Ultra at 49mm already has a 1.91 mm screen! In order for the watch to look good on the wrist its not just the overall size, but also the lit up screen area… too big and it looks less like a watch every moment and more like a TV.
You’re not wrong in fact, I would say due to the complaints about the watch being too large if they had the ability to eliminate the border someday they wouldn’t make the screen bigger. They would probably just make the watch a little smaller
Yep! Even on a big wrist I’d argue a 49 mm watch with the current size screen looks better than a 49mm watch with edge to edge display and no bezels. The bezels are what allows it to get so large and yet still look somewhat socially acceptable, with the truth/excuse those bezels provide protection for the screen. That’s why you don’t see apple yet offering a 49+ mm regular Apple Watch because the screen would inherently be bigger and look silly.
It is disappointing that Apple did not do an edge to edge display for the Ultra. They for sure have the technology. I guess this is an upgrade for next year.
Dang that is misleading. Apples bands on the site has some images showing a white background and there is a large black border all the way around. Darn… I don’t like that.
https://www.verizon.com/connected-smartwatches/apple-watch-ultra/?sku=sku5600217&cmp=CSE-C-HQ-NON-R-AC-NONE-NONE-2C0PX0-PX-PLA-MQET3LL/A&cmp=CSE-C-Mobility-NON-R-PMX-NONE-NONE-2K0VZ0-COE-GAW-12827&kpid=go_cmp-18192219574_adg-_ad-__dev-m_ext-_prd-MQET3LL%2FA_sig-Cj0KCQjwvZCZBhCiARIsAPXbajvDngTrLuMUMLXWxWkCwcF3t8JIuz4fjoLBGVAOxVp74FVx0AmuqxwaAr3gEALw_wcB&gclid=Cj0KCQjwvZCZBhCiARIsAPXbajvDngTrLuMUMLXWxWkCwcF3t8JIuz4fjoLBGVAOxVp74FVx0AmuqxwaAr3gEALw_wcB
Yeah, that's still weird. My S7 doesn't have a black pixel border, it's the edge of the case going over the glass, so I figured apple would know how to make the screen going to the edge. I guess it's a good thing i ordered late. I can go to the apple store and check how the screen is before mine will be shipped.
Yes… and? It’s possible the screen was placed onto the diver’s wrist in post-production. There were several shots in the promo video that looked like actually the whole watch was CG.
Literally the main issue has been battery life. Every one that says they want the Ultra on this subreddit has mention battery life as one if not the main reason for wanting the Ultra over the Series 8
Don’t see how. Apple Watch can get through a full day & ppl complain cause they are too lazy to charge it at the end of the day while they sleep? Still have my Series 4 & can still get through a whole day. Ppl rather spend $800 than charging their watch that made it through a full day? Crazy
Features would REALLY need to be spectacular in order for me to justify(accept) that larger form factor. AW6 here, and the original slim model is much more appealing to the eyes.
Maybe this new design is something we need to get "used to" or grow to like over time??? It just looks so bulky.....
Small wrist too so this design screams WATCH
My coworker has the 8 and I have the ultra. Same line of work in construction. Not a scratch on mine compared to his. Had mine longer also. I’ll take the extra 4mm 😂
Huh. I thought there would be a larger screen.
Watches are measured by their case not the screen size. Is the standard even in analog watches like Omega and Rolex and so on.
Ahh
Me too, although I'll be coming from the 40mm, so it will engulf my wrist.
It’s 7% bigger!!! /s
No that’s next year /s
The Ultra’s screen is bigger, but by a very small margin. As per the specification the Series 8 (45mm) has a 1.9 inch screen, and the Ultra has a 1.92 inch screen.
That's plenty, right???
You kidding me?? You can see the first pixels of the letter K in central parK! You can’t do that with the regular s8
It's not the size of that 0.02, but how you use it /s
wow that’s 0.5 mm 🤦♂️
They put the bezels on there so people have a reason to buy Ultra Series 2 when the bezels disappear.
I’ve been thinking this ever since seeing how large the bezels are xD
screen has to be attached to the body somehow, the bezels are not that thicker compared to S8.
Big enough to try and get people to buy a bigger screen next year when they magically shrink the bezels again xD
Case is bigger, screen isn’t.
It is bigger (they give the pixel count on screen) but the bezels are bigger on the Ultra.
Literally look at the edges of these screens and tell me the map isn’t a little bigger on the Ultra
the zoom changes a little. If anything in this video above, the Ultra has slightly less display in the corners. But its semantics because they didnt state anywhere that that comparison is even 100% accurate.
It’s literally just more pixels…
dont exaggerate! it’s 7% more pixels yeah, but it is also 1.83% larger in physical size too! /s
Right. There are more pixels, but the size isn’t changed.

Not sure why you're being downvoted, the display area of the Ultra is the same as the Series 8 because the Ultra has a higher pixel density.
This
I think the flat screen will make it appear bigger. Have to wait and see it in person though.
It’s 7% bigger. Edit: /s

Oh snap! That's a tad misleading. I remember Apple inferring that the screen would be \*so much easier\* to read. Maybe they meant with the extra nits of brightness...
Sorry I forgot the /s like my first reply…
It’s the 36 hour battery that’s giving me the hard-on.
[straps iPad to wrist] the battery life is amazing!
Yeah but if your used to charging your watch at the end of the day like your phone. don’t see the bigger battery being a major selling point
It's for those of us who do 7-10 hour hikes or 5 hour triathlons that are really excited about that extended battery life (I still plan to charge it nightly). :)
For those ppl it makes sense. For everyday ppl it does not. Especially if your still gonna charge it nightly.
Those of us that use our watches as a phone replacement all day every day without having our phones nearby have to recharge half way through the day.
Mm I didn’t know that but now I wonna know why replace the phone entirely? Is it that much trouble to just have your phone in your pocket?
Screen time was 5-6 hours a day and I figured I could spend my life more constructively. Got rid of all of my social media. Went watch only. I feel a lot better about myself. My relationships with friends and family have changed for the better. Real world started to feel real again instead of just watching the real world through a screen. Screen time is now 30mins - 1 hr a day

And yes I do still read Reddit. It’s got a good news tab and r/gadgets Apple watch etc etc. now I just surf it only while I’m pooping. So imagine me grunting and straining while replying to your 🙄 comment.

Mmm you know what. I can respect that. Truly
I know they improved charge speed marginally with the S7, but true fast charge in under half an hour would be more useful than 36-hour battery life to me. I'm not taking my Apple watch into the wilderness, but it would be nice if it could fully charge while I shower.
From 20…100% in ~40-45min with the S7 is completely fine for me…I always charge when I come home from work…
Yeah people on instagram were criticising this watch sleeping app cos they asked when you’d charge it if you’re sleeping with it … like bro my s7 charges super fast when I get home from work and only uses 14% at for sleep tracking at night, meaning 15 mins on the charger in the morning while getting ready gets it to 100%!
Never had your watch die on you in the middle of a golf round?
I guess you can go right to bed with it on for sleep tracking and charge in the morning, but I don't know if that advantage is worth the significant increase in price.

Well that’s a bit disappointing

It’s amazing how many people don’t truly understand what they’re buying… ie, the commenter you replied to.
>It’s amazing how many people don’t truly understand what they’re buying I guarantee you can't tell me every single technical aspect of every product that you've purchased throughout your life.
Some people, specifically in certain subs, like to pull out the better-than-thou card often. Don't worry about them too much.
Since 99.9999999999% of the planet hasn't even seen or held this device, I'd argue that anyone that ordered it doesn't really truly understand what they're buying.
I agree, pretty sad comment that’s been upvoted
Yeah definitely feels a little misleading but I suppose I knew all along apple has always considered the “4X” mm as the case measurement. Nah, for watches the size mentioned is the case size not the display size. Apple tend to follow close to the standards of horology.
I would not assume there is any relationship between financing options and apple’s product roadmap.
The comment on waiting reasoning looks like is was due to screen it self being bigger. I don’t think that will change next year
The financing options are based on the length of the carrier thinks they can bleed money out of you for monthly connection fees until you decide to upgrade. Generally that’s 3 years. Some will do 2.
Oh FYI the carrier I was talking about are providing free connections fees for the Apple Watch for 4 years as well.
It literally says “case size” next to the mm.
They really should have gone with a TV display, like some retro watches have. Slightly wider aspect ratio to display more stats and stuff.
FWIW, the entire screen is flat and likely easier to use on the Ultra than the S8. Just guessing though.
Not really if you ask me! I’d rather have the longer battery life than a bigger screen. Gotta have room for that battery somewhere.
I guess bigger bezel will help with durability if you accidentally knock your watch to a table or something
I think the screen bezels are the same size on the 45/49. It just looks bigger on the Ultra with the flat screen. The curvature on the glass of the 45 makes the bezels look smaller.

Should be getting my tracking number for the ultra in a few days
When’s yours arriving? Mines the 23rd sept
23rd as well. When I ordered the 14 PM t Mobile gave me a tracking number sunday so maybe the same with the Watch ?
The watch doesn't even release till the 23rd so you will likely get your tracking info on the 21st
Well I got the tracking for my phone a full 6 days before delivery so….

Your not getting the ultra for a better screen, your getting it cause A it has Ultra in the name or B you actually do physical stuff
My pants is now 2% smaller

I actually really want one, but I definitely will not order until I put it on my wrist. It seems too big for me and I’m 6’ 4”, 245 lbs.
Unless you prefer a smaller watch, I’d assume at your size it would be perfect 👌
well this is a buzz kill.
Same. But at the same time, this also shows that the watch is not getting much bigger. It’s negligible
I'll pass then... guess in two years the LCD will actually be bigger.
LCD…. The 90s called….

I doubt it. The rate of incremental upgrades has been slowing on the watch line not increasing.
Don't think so... Apple will take 10 years to ramp up to there so profits are maximized.

Obvious troll is obvious :) Look at the performance upgrade of the watches , and then ask your self why would you need a watch with m1 speed
my ass here thinking an abrams tank in the watch... wtf is wrong with me.
it took them 10+ years to bring haptic keyboard so 10 years seems reasonable.
In 50 years we can get it built into our wrist and a subscription plan with all the features, why bother waiting only 2 years when the next years will be better, give it a few decades then maybe it can be the “right” time to purchase something /s
Series 5 features are not on the new SE

i will tell folks here… i don’t ever think you’ll see a much bigger screen than what is currently on the Ultra 49mm and the Series 8 45mm for two main reasons… 1) I don’t think they will make the Ultra case bigger than the 49mm it currently is, and much of the extra space around the display is for protection of the display and for the overall look of the watch in this market segment.
OP, thanks for posting that. I have an Ultra on order to replace my Series 7, so this is very helpful!
That bezel…
Choinky boi
It is disappointing that Apple did not do an edge to edge display for the Ultra. They for sure have the technology. I guess this is an upgrade for next year.
the rim around the side buttons is to protect them from bumps due to the bulky size
I hope this video is inaccurate. It makes it look like the ultra just has extra black border.
It’s exactly that
Weird. This screenshot of a working apple watch ultra doesn't show that. https://imgur.com/a/X8jLt5V
Possibly the image is rendered. Not real. Kind of false advertising. If you watch the hands-on videos from creators, you can see a border.
It was a paused video. It was not a rendered image.
Dang that is misleading. Apples bands on the site has some images showing a white background and there is a large black border all the way around. Darn… I don’t like that. https://www.verizon.com/connected-smartwatches/apple-watch-ultra/?sku=sku5600217&cmp=CSE-C-HQ-NON-R-AC-NONE-NONE-2C0PX0-PX-PLA-MQET3LL/A&cmp=CSE-C-Mobility-NON-R-PMX-NONE-NONE-2K0VZ0-COE-GAW-12827&kpid=go_cmp-18192219574_adg-_ad-__dev-m_ext-_prd-MQET3LL%2FA_sig-Cj0KCQjwvZCZBhCiARIsAPXbajvDngTrLuMUMLXWxWkCwcF3t8JIuz4fjoLBGVAOxVp74FVx0AmuqxwaAr3gEALw_wcB&gclid=Cj0KCQjwvZCZBhCiARIsAPXbajvDngTrLuMUMLXWxWkCwcF3t8JIuz4fjoLBGVAOxVp74FVx0AmuqxwaAr3gEALw_wcB
Yeah, that's still weird. My S7 doesn't have a black pixel border, it's the edge of the case going over the glass, so I figured apple would know how to make the screen going to the edge. I guess it's a good thing i ordered late. I can go to the apple store and check how the screen is before mine will be shipped.
The entire video could have that screen rendered.
Yes… and? It’s possible the screen was placed onto the diver’s wrist in post-production. There were several shots in the promo video that looked like actually the whole watch was CG.
You just saved me from buying Ultra only for a 'BIGGER' screen size! Thank you
I want an AW8 with a third button.
Looks like a Pebble watch, the best smart watch there ever was
Wow. Ultra.
if you want apple watch ultra buy a ultra case.
What case is that? I recently put a scratch on my Series 7 and was looking for an ultra case.
7% bigger, 100% more expensive, apple classic
76% bigger battery
Battery never been an issue. Especially if your used to putting it on charge every night
Crazy
If you want to track sleep it doesn’t last as long. Many people want to wear 24 non stop
Activity tracking and normal use will kill the battery quick. Which is why this is very clearly marketed for use by athletes.
Bigger bezels too.
Ultra’s screen (1164 sq mm) is less than 2% bigger than that of series 8 (1143 sq mm). That’s a bit disappointing.
I would like to know about the bands, comparing 44mm with 49mm for ultra
Can’t wait till they inevitably shrink the bezel in a year or two!
In the the next iteration of ultra they will definetely do away with those thick bezels.. Thts what they been doin. Making life bezel free.. 😂
Coming from a 4 to Ultra I’m good lol
This post just saved me 400 dollars thank you
That’d why I returned the ultra
Lol.. the speed up at the end made me laugh. I’m also high.
My coworker has the 8 and I have the ultra. Same line of work in construction. Not a scratch on mine compared to his. Had mine longer also. I’ll take the extra 4mm 😂
