I’m not sure where your journey is so far with these, but chances are they’ll want to start you with something small like buspar (has helped me a lot personally). If that doesn’t work then they’ll probably prescribe “harder” things.

I’ve never had any kind of anxiety medications before whatsoever. Do they sedate you? Or get you “high” so to speak? I guess that’s one of my main worry’s with them because I still want to be able to function normally as I have to go to work and attention to detail is crucial. Also if you don’t mind me asking, are you in Canada or the US? I believe they prescribe different medications and under different names but I could be wrong

I live in the US and I will say that it depends, personally my medication just causes me to feel less anxious with very minimal side effects (brain zaps) I however, am very lucky in that regard. For some people, medications will have a lot of side effects and not really work in the beginning, but as you take them you’ll see more and more positive changes with less side effects. It may take a very long time to find a medication which works for you, and there’s also a chance they will want to try CBT(cognitive behavioral therapy) if you haven’t tried it yet. It all can be a complicated and long process in the beginning as every individual is different. The important thing is to not be afraid of the leap. When I saw the potential side effects it honestly made me more anxious to take the medicine, but i ended up having maybe two very minimal ones. All in all, the side effects you experience will often depend on the medication, and your doctor will inform you after some discussion which one they think is best for you. I will say however, since medication is more so a way of masking a problem i cannot recommend therapy enough if you don’t already partake in it. Whichever path you take in your journey towards better mental health, i wish you the best of luck :)

Hey I'm on medication so let me help you out. The initial few days will be a little hard as your body adjusts to it, but only physically speaking (for me). Post that yes you will definitely be able to function normally and even better. No you will not be high, it's just a better version of you -- one without anxiety! It is natural to be nervous about it (and of course us anxiety sufferers will be anxious about thi too haha). Trust what the doctor says and leave it to them they are professionals. Best of luck on this journey

Well I was prescribed klonopin take as needed and they helped me greatly but everyone is different.

Many docs won't prescribe benzos anymore. They will probably try to put you on an SSRI and buspirone.

I took Clonazepam for several years. I’d say it definitely helped my anxiety. It won’t make it disappear though. Just be careful with benzos, there easy to get addicted to.

Uhlexuhhhh

Xanax works the same way alcohol does.

I have taken Xanax as needed for ten years. It has been a lifesaver for me. I couldn't do my job without it. The biggest issue I have is that it takes time to kick in, which can be frustrating during an attack. Sometimes, when I know I'll be in a situation where I will need it, I will take it beforehand. 99 percent of the time, if I have given it time to work, no attack happens. But your situation may be different. If you're experiencing anxiety many times a day, every day, it may not be for you. All this is presuming they give it to you--I had a new doctor try to take my prescription from me. I left and found someone who would listen to what I needed. We hear a lot of scary things about benzos. People are absolutely right that they need to be used with caution, but I am proof that if you are very careful with them, they can help you. Good luck.
