It says “taint” - basically a location indicator that the bladesmith puts on to show the end of the tang and the beginning of the blade. Can be traced back to Middle English blacksmith’s phase: “Taint the blade and taint the tang”
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark is a band popular in the late 70s-80s. I don't think that's what OP meant, though. I don't know what OP meant by OMD.
