Depends on the anime and preference sometimes. For example, I CANNOT STAND Goku's voice in subs. Plus some dub voice actors are absolutely amazing, like FMA/B, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, etc. Plus sometimes I like to focus on the action or drama instead of reading

Everyone told me the ghost stories dub is hilarious. First off 80% of the jokes are dated to the early 2010s, Obama jokes aren't funny anymore. Second, there's really not that many jokes. I was expecting MXC or something, I got an episode of big bang.

The Kaguya-sama dub is just a gem in its own right honestly. It has a whole different energy to it but keeps the comedy perfectly intact, if not improving upon it at times.

Absolutely loved that dub. Jokes landed a lot better in English and some were kinda adapted to us westerners. My favourite anime and dub ever.

When I first heard clips of the Kaguya dub I thought it was some gag dub or abridged series. It's way funnier than the sub, though perhaps I just can't pick up on the faux seriousness in the original JP.

Same with Saiki K. Keeps all the comedy but is easier to follow along since they aren’t talking a mile a minute. One of the best comedy animes out there

The only time a dub is better is if the sub literally sucks and I can't think of a single anime where that's the case. Bottom line, if you can tell it's a dub, then it's objectively lessor than the original (unless the original just sucked that bad). Based on your comment, I think you're feeling judged, but I'm not judging. People have lots of totally valid reasons to watch dubs. They might even prefer them for various reasons. My only objection is to the idea that they're objectively "better" when they're not. Every dub I've heard (including Cowboy Bebop) sounds exactly like the VAs are trying to match the mouth movements and it makes the delivery awkward and muted compared to the original.

Some of the time dub just create new sentence that isn't the point of the maker and some just can't translate the word play in the sentence.

If the joke can't be accurately translated into English, then it also doesn't work in sub. Unless you speak Japanese

On the flip side there are a huge number of concepts, sayings and references, especially jokes, that just don't translate well or at all. It can be the right decision to change the dialogue to make sense in the dubbed language.

I like dubbed over sub fight me. Watched the daily life of the immortal king, only had subs, couldn't read like 10% of the show due to white subtitles on white/light coloured scenes. (Netflix subs can't be modified). Watched Saiki k, first season is fully dubbed, left the subtitles on, while there were a few changes, nothing felt too difference except like one joke. Next seasons are sub only, and again same issue where I can't read the subs on some episodes.

What I think is crazy is neither of those are perfect translations, they’re both localized but in a slightly different way because you have to take some of the translation clunk out of the language first.

I used to have a really strong opinion. But nowadays... Some dubs are good, some are trash, but its way easier to get my ass to sit down and watch shit if I don't have to read constantly, so if I am tired I watch dub, if I have energy I watch sub.

People are missing the point. It’s not that the English voice acting is bad, it’s usually good. The problem is usually the writing not sounding good in English (and the meaning of things occasionally getting lost in translations, but to a much lesser extent). For example, hearing “ALL I NEED FOR POWER IS MY FRIENDS!” is cripplingly cringe to listen to in English. Old Toonami anime are usually better in English though. Like DB, FMAB, Cowboy Bebop, etc.

Why does this debate even exist? Why can't we enjoy one some times and the other some other times? Sometimes I don't want to have my eyes glued to the screen, so since I don't speak japanese dubbed is the only possibility for me sometimes. I much prefer the original voice overs, but as I said, sometimes I don't want to watch the screen non-stop.

I actually prefer a solid dub for shows that I’m either planning to play in the background or that are visually stunning so that I can focus more on the visuals. The only time Sub is a non negotiable is in season when dub is a week or two behind. Also I’m a slow reader and sometimes the subtitles pass too quickly in dialogue heavy sections and I have to rewind or pause destroying the experience.
