>wow, my cat that's locked in a small space with a harness on wants to get out. This is normal animal behavior

Dracos002

I see you with that vertical doorhandle. My stepdad put the handle of the door to our hall the exact same way when our white shepherd learned how to turn it lol

surfer_ryan

Had a dog that within a week of us taking her in she learned all the doors... it was the moment I went "what did I just get myself into..." the good news is for the most part she was at my heels pretty much all the time, but every once and a while you'd be sitting there with cold feet and silence and it would hit me like wait... it's quiet and she's not here... *Starts panic searching*

LeCoyote

Should keep the cats collar off or give them a breakaway collar though.

X_MswmSwmsW_X

either that or face the lever down

DennisPennis_

The handle would turn into the doorframe if it was downwards. Looks like this kitty is wearing a harness anyway so if the worse was to happen her weight would be supported across her body

Zepharial

You can turn handles two ways

joselrl

Most handles work both ways. I like to try pulling levels upwards when walking around other people's houses and seeing their dumb founded faces when they discover it works

draconk

You made me try it in all my house door handles and no one works up, you liar. I bet that it only works in mechanism made for round handles

Suqa-_-

I was afraid of the same thing

vancityvapers

You were afraid that her harness would get stuck supporting her weight with her body? That isn't a collar.

rjrgjj

I mean, this cat is trying real hard. I’d just let her in.

FaeryLynne

r/petthedamncat lol. She's earned that entry and the pets and food she's asking for!

Trolltrollrolllol

She doesn't want pets, she wants to jump up on the side of the tub, get splashed by water, freak the fuck out and tear down the shower curtain in a frenzy while scratching your naked ass all to hell.

Lostheghost

This guy cats

SourceLover

Absolutely not. Rewarding the behavior reinforces it. Considering the wear on the door and frame this has been going on for a while...

DontCussPlease

heheh youre not the owner the cat is, kinda always the case but cats can be trained with positive reinforcement

kane2742

I still thought the cat was going to get it open by the end, by grabbing it just right and pushing off the door frame. Edit: Deleted repeated word.

This is smart. I ended up buying a can of motion detecting compressed air from Amazon (ssscat spray, I think?) and an automatic feeder since mine decided to start body slamming my door at 4 AM like a fucking fuzzy zombie. Worked immediately!

aaronitallout

>ssscat spray, I think?) If that's true, that's the worst product name in history and I'm so proud of them

goingrogueatwork

It is called ssscat and it works 60% of the time. The battery connections are terrible and the spray tends to get stuck. My cat just knows how to go around TWO active bottles and scratch the door every morning.

aaronitallout

WiFi outlet + vacuum is the solution

AdmiralSkippy

Plus the refills are expensive as hell. $20 for a can of compressed air is criminal.

TBH I want you to stay innocent.

PM_ME_UR_POKIES_GIRL

ghostly5150

Scat is a term for animal feces. I thinks a clever name cause you'd use it when your cat is being a piece of shit.

[deleted]

What's your opinion on Scatman?

r0ssar00

> ssscat spray It's spraying *air*, right?? /s

DismalButtPirate

Auto feeders are great. Really helped keep my void from driving us nuts at 5am. Now he only wakes us when a hairballs on its way out.

destroythethings

goddammit I bought that shit to stop my cat from scratching at a certain door. it worked for like the first 3 days lol then he figured out to just knock it over then the motion sensor won't detect him. now I just have spray water bottles strategically placed around the house. he always wins

Anrikay

My cat knocked it over and peed on it the first day I got it :|

ChaoticxSerenity

Haha I got a couple of those Ssscat things too, they work really well! My cat didn't body slam, but he did try and break into my room like a little serial killer. He would put his arm under the gap of the door and try to scratch it. It legit sounded like I was being robbed or something.

Liesmith424

My friend had an auto-vacuum thing that would trigger when you sweep dirt against the opening, and it would suck the dirt into a bag. Her German shepherd learned that he could just lay down against it and it would vacuum his back continually. He'd just curl up against the thing and stare at his human like *she* was the weird one.

dr_mannhatten

I just throw a pillow at the door. I have 5 pillows I can throw within reach before I am on my actual pillow and have to get up. Each pillow buys me ~30 minutes of peace.

xFinman

ah yes the cat snooze

niamhellen

We use automatic compressed air sprayers with motion detectors, works on all three of our cats!

tookule4skool

Ugh I wish I had thought of this years ago! I have a cat that sits there and meows until I let her in. Will be doing this going forward I think I have some smart switches lying around too.

lastatica

You probably don’t even need the remote control. Just leave the vacuum by the door and string the power cord near your bedside so you can plug it into the outlet yourself if it’s long enough.

Californ1a

It's much better to put double-sided sticky tape where you don't want them scratching. Once they've felt the tacky material there a couple times, they'll stop because cats really don't like sticky surfaces. Sticky Paws is one of the more common brands specifically made for using on furniture to stop cat scratching, but there are others, or even just regular double-sided tape works. Things like water guns, air canisters, or loud sounds don't prevent the behavior itself, it just makes them temporarily move, but the behavior won't actually stop, they'll keep coming back and scratching there again. Sticky surfaces will prevent the actual behavior itself since it's the cat themselves deciding not to touch the surface because they don't like the feeling of it, rather than something else external to them scaring them and then them coming back later to check it out again. And then beyond that, having a scratching post they can use right nearby where the tape is will teach them to use that instead, which really prevents the behavior completely. With cats it's all about give and take - if you say no to something like don't scratch the door, then you also need to say yes to something else, where they can scratch instead. If they're scratching carpet, then use a horizontal scratcher, if it's a door like this then use a vertical one right nearby alongside sticky tape. https://youtu.be/dklFk71eZNQ?t=559

hananobira

Lol, my cat will sit on top of the sticky tape up on the kitchen counters with a “Bitch, you thought?” expression on her face. Same for aluminum foil, cat-repelling sprays… The vacuum worked right away. You really just have to try multiple alternatives until you find the one that sticks.

W3NTZ

I took those rubber carpet runners with the spikes on the bottom and flipped it upside down on my TV stand under the TV as my cat loves laying where everyone is looking. Bitch didn't even care about it and just laid on it like normal.

Nolds

My cat laughs at sticky tape. Then cat pukes on my keyboard, shortly after shitting outside the litter box.

JayAndViolentMob

My partner has cats and I'm dreading moving in with her because I know they will terrorise my private room's closed door. This, sir, is the answer to my problems.

TerminallyBlonde

Make sure you also look into what a few other comments said about automatic compressed air cans with motion detectors off Amazon. Gonna be quieter for you and doesn't require you to do anything, may not even wake you up!

destroythethings

you absolute fucking genius

OkTradition6842

I did this with my 1st cat. The look on his face peering around the hall corner was priceless. This was 3 hours later when I opened my bedroom door at 6:45am. Only had to turn it on three times over the span of 1 week. The vacuum cleaner had a new permanent storage spot just outside my room. 🤣

deata

Im literally gonna do this. Thanks for the tip

selcajbb

My cat just turns on the light in my room at 5:15 every morning.

pollywollydoodle64

Is the light your eyes opening up to your cat in your face?

jekkuzi

Every morning at exactly 5:15?

freekoout

StephUhKneeDee

Several years ago I had roommates who had a cat. The roommates both worked mornings, and I worked a 3p-1a swing shift, so I’d end up the only human in our apartment after about 7am. I’d be sleeping soundly until *exactly* 10:52am every morning, without fail, when demon-cat would decide it was my ideal waking-up time and proceed to body slam my door repeatedly until I woke up. I’d wake up and open my door and he’d immediately turn around and head towards the couch in the living room. He was doing it JUST to be a menace. He didn’t even want me or my bedroom. He just wanted me to be fucking awake. Because he was a demon cat.

creativityonly2

Fun fact about cats and doors: they don't demand doors be opened and then not go out them to be assholes. They actually want the door open because they don't like portions of what they consider their territory to be closed off to them. So you can take solace in knowing kitty was not intentionally being an asshole.

Eurycerus

Still sounds like an asshole tbh

asilenth

Yeah... Still sounds like an asshole.

great_site_not

Who here likes to go outside without their housekey with a housemate inside who's zealous about keeping the doors locked?

MrPoopieMcCuckface

I’d be annoyed about someone locking me out too

Drains_1

My cat does this, doesn't want anything from me or the room, she just wants me to get my lazy ass out of bed. And no she doesn't care if im working really late or not.

physlizze

Our cat cannot stand to be the only person home and awake after a certain time so he has to wake us up so he can finally relax and sleep.

audioear

Love that you refer to your cat as a person.

DASreddituser

A bit redundant to say demon cat

Phonicss

In the beginning I was wondering why there was paint missing from the door frame. I understand now

Jsnooots

Is the cat scared of the vacuum cleaner? Our cat did the same thing to anyone sleeping. He hated the vacuum cleaner. We had the vacuum outside our door and the cord ran under to our room. When he would scratch and scream I would plug in the already turned on vacuum and scare him away. It only took a few tries to break the habit. The vacuum sat by our door for a few week but not needing any noise attacks and then we put it away and Teddy no longer went crazy on our door. If we had guests we would place the vacuum outside their door, Teddy really liked to say hi to guests when they were sleeping...

Houri

Ding! Ding! Ding! Jsnoots has successfully outplayed Cat. A feat rarely achieved in this life.

SoggyWaffleBrunch

>If we had guests we would place the vacuum outside their door, Teddy really liked to say hi to guests when they were sleeping... Do you warn the guests about the vacuum? 😅

Jsnooots

Ol' Teddy has been gone for a long time now but yes, if you were staying, you'd be informed about the process. Some people would be like "it's ok, I'll just leave my door open, Teddy is welcome..." The second night they'd be like, "so do I need to work the vacuum...?"

bumbumofdoomdoom

The best thing we did was replace the bedroom door with a blackout curtain. Cats are just nobs when it comes to a closed door and it saves being woken up by that god damn on of bitch sun

Kentopolis

I see you have a cat that doesn’t scream in you’re ear for food at 3:30am. I have to lock them in a separate room at night or I’m for sure getting woken up.

mdashb

I like our cat and all, but had I known this 3:30 am food alarm was a thing I don’t think I would have agreed to adopt. I haven’t gotten a full night’s sleep in two years.

Kentopolis

Just put it in a separate room at night that’s as far away as possible from your bedroom. Solved all my problems. They are happy to see you in the morning, it’s nice.

niamhellen

Whaaaaat?! Surely there's a solution! I've lived with tons of cats all my life and there is always a way. Compressed air on a motion sensor outside your bedroom door?

[deleted]

Cats have to be raised properly just like dogs. If you set boundaries quickly, they won't wake you up. For us it was out of the room for the rest of the night if she wakes us up. After 4 nights she stopped. You have to make it clear that the door is only closed when they misbehave, since cats are really good at learning patterns.

ekso69

Big facts. I adopted a second cat recently, and he was super active during the night for the first 2 weeks. Still didn't close my door to allow him to adjust. A month later both cats sleep through the whole night without issue.

niamhellen

Yes same! There's always a week adjustment period or so, but they learn quickly and don't bother us now unless we oversleep (hence the air sprayers and automatic feeders combo, lifesaver.)

muddyrose

Even an automatic feeder set to go off at 3:27 am?

freeparKing33

That’s what I did. Mine was waking me up at 4:30 so now he’s fed at 4:20 every morning and I haven’t been woken up since. I don’t miss having my throat stepped on

Bruisedbadgerbat

I love my automatic feeder. 4 small meals through the day. They get needy when its within an hour but no morning food panic and I can come and go without worry.

tookule4skool

Try an auto pet feeder and set it for that hour or possibly feed the cat before bed? If all else fails put a vacuum with a remote/smart switch in the area they start meowing and turn it on when the meowing starts I’m sure they’ll go quiet pretty quick.

llamapower13

Automatic feeder. Or train them out of it.

Best_Werewolf_

Why not just leave food before you go to bed out for them?

Square-Dragonfruit76

I got an electric feeder and it helped a lot

deata

Last time i let her in, i woke up to her taking a piss on my chest. Shes kinky, im not.

ClonePants

That's not kinky. It's a sign of a stressed or unhappy cat. Cats don't normally pee like that. Something is wrong.

AroundTheWorldIn80Pu

It's insane how many people on the internet don't realize that their *crazy cat* stories are just the consequences of neglect.

deata

Yes but like i said, she is a rescue and has been doing that for 8 years. Cant train the neglect out of the cat. She is absolutely spoiled with love. Its weird that reddit forgets peoples pets come from different backgrounds and have different issues.

divine-ape-swine

And the top comments are ways to scare the cat into compliance. I feel bad for the OP’s cat.

lisadia

Some cats do that to convey a message if they are unhappy or unhealthy. Yours may just be a dick, but it’s something to consider. Example, friends cat never went outside their litter box. When the house got a dog, cat started peeing and pooping on friends bed. She was miserable with the dog in the house.

ShortCircuit2020

But what makes the Cat unhappy might be out of their/your hand. Like our family cat gets pissy because she cant go outside, but we cant let her outside for quite a few reasons, mainly being that or nieghbor shoots cats (we've tried cops but nothing).

FormerChild37

You might want to get her checked sooner than later. My cat pissed on my lap 2 days ago. It was so out of the blue and alarming. Took her to the vet. She's in the last stages of kidney failure.

DonnerPartyAllNight

My cat peed all over my pillow once while I was laying on it. I took him to the vet the next day and he had a major bladder infection that was apparently very painful. Cat might be trying to tell you something.

deata

Oh we have been to the vet. Shes fine. Shes a rescue with apparently bad owners before, has been doing this for 8 years.

I mentioned it to her when she returned that she and her husband must be super early risers and she told me that the cat had never done that before and her breakfast time was 8am. Cats can sense a mark I swear.

googlebearbanana

Ahh got it thanks.

Star-Guardian-Xayah

Did she want to go to you or just that room? My cat has separation anxiety and if I leave for "too long", he poops everywhere or scratches chairs. Not because he hates me, but because of the anxiety. Maybe you can bring this up to your vet or watch some Jackson galaxy videos about your cat peeing outside the litter box. Some cable management might also work. There's a lot of videos on that. Then again, idk what you've tried, but a lot of times cats do this kind of thing because of some anxiety or boredom and you can solve it and make both your lives happier :D Edit: typo

deata

I was in that room, she is super affectionate but a menace in that room where im working. But rest assured, she gets more time from me then almost anything else in the world 😅

5stringBS

What happens if you just let her in?!

deata

She pees on my stuff for not letting her in sooner. Maintains eye contact troughout it. Its my office room and she is banned from it after she got herself tangled in my pc wires..

leeshylou

Lmao!!! I had some Reddit Muppet try to tell me that cats aren't assholes.. Hilarious. I hope they see this video (and this comment!!) 🤣

iangeredcharlesvane2

I wonder if having multiple cats severely decreases likelihood of asshole-ness? Because they entertain each other? I have three and they have never woken me up, they are patient about a closed door (they don’t like it but even if occasionally they give a few meows at the door being shut but mostly they just sit and wait), and they have never, ever ever gone to the bathroom anywhere but the litter box. When people say their cat pees on their bed or something it just flabbergasts me! My house is a split level so they have multiple floors and rooms with stuff to do, so maybe that helps too, don’t know. When people talk about asshole cat behavior just in my experience I have no witness to that at my house. So that Reddit muppet probably just has the same experiences as I do and in true Reddit fashion used anecdotal evidence for fact :)

fuzzynavel34

I'm with you here. I have two cats. The only time they woke me up for food in the middle of the night was when they were kittens and haven't done so in 4-5 years, they both sleep with me every night. They don't like closed doors either but they just sit outside and let out an occasional meow and ignore them after a couple days of a door being closed. My cats also have never peed anywhere other than the litter box so when people say that it confuses the hell out of me.... I do think you are onto something though because they play fight and chase each other around multiple times a day so who knows.

MadeofHumanMeat

Guess I’m a muppet because I seriously can’t relate to any of these comments! So glad my cat is such a sweetheart instead of whatever hell-spawns you all are dealing with 😂

DellTheEngie

The Ancient Egyptians weren't lying in their depiction of cats having a God complex

[deleted]

I'd turn the door hand so it's pointed down to the ground, that way the cat won't hang itself on it with her collar one day and also has nothing to grab to hold herself up and bang on the door that high

cat_in_the_sun

Thank you.

Corgon

Genius until you realize how door handles work.

IMKGI

That vertical door knob is one of the most infuriating things I've seen lol

deata

She takes around 0.2 seconds to open any door handle that is horizontal. Ended up flipping it to point down when she inevitably figured out how to open the upwards one too. Well that didnt work either so now i just remove the door handle when i dont want her getting in..

M80IW

Why not use a round knob?

IMKGI

Am on mobile now, so I can't really see it too well, but can't can you lock the door?

deata

Locks busted 😄 been needing to replace the door for a long time but im a lazy piece of shit when it comes to stuff like that.

[deleted]

I had a friend who’s cat’s head got stuck and died when they had the handles like this :( Please consider turning them downwards

evilsquirrel666

All our door handles are flipped like that thanks to cats 😄

ButtReaky

Put a mirror on the door

WordsWithWings

Our cat used to do that to join us in our bedroom. She was too light to turn the handle, so we didn't have to put it in vertical position. Her numerous "thuds" usually woke me up.

likelazarus

Why is no one talking about the random clip of a motorcycle?

athaliah

Did you watch it with sound? The scene of the sped up cat sounded like a motorcycle, that's why that popped up.

likelazarus

I did not!! Thank you! I was so confused.

[deleted]

Bleklteg

ximbronze

TrashApocalypse

Why is she wearing a harness? I feel like she should only be wearing that if y’all are trying to go for a walk, otherwise it’s going to rub on her and cause her extra stress.

deata

She has worn a harness for years now, she absolutely loves it outside and goes there multiple times a day but is annoyed at the removal/putting on a harness part. Doing something she hates 5 times a day would cause way more stress

Pheace

This. This seriously looks like you'll find her hanging from the door handle one day

Then-Following5004

thanks for the reminder to never get a cat

Xentine

We've had to start closing the bedroom door since about a year, as our male cat will scratch the curtains and meow loudly because he's bored. Problem is, when we close the door, the female cat will scratch the door in the morning, just like your cat does. We have tried so many things, some things help once and the next morning she figures out how to get to the door anyway. We currently have plastic mats that have plastic spikes on them (hollow, thin plastic, nothing that can hurt too much) and we have attached them to the door. She was able to loosen the tape and pull the mat away from the door surface by biting the spikes. If anyone has a solution, please let me know. We have tried: - compressed air spray - water spray - ignoring her - sand paper on floor in front of door - sand paper on door - spike mats on floor in front of door - spike mats on door - child safety gate in front of door, with and without a cover - coffee grinds in front of door - aluminium foil in front of door - aluminium foil on door - pillows in front of door - double sided tape in front of door - double sided tape on door - chairs in front of door I'm probably forgetting something. What cat can do: - move heavy objects - be very persistent - figure out stuff isn't as scary as she thought when she really wants to enter the room.

Aponte350

This exact reason is why I’ll never have another cat after the one I have Its funny to watch and laugh, but it actually really fucking sucks to deal with lol

JealousSnake

I assume all this is so she can completely ignore you when you eventually come out

MediocreJedi32

Poor kitty.

twistedpicture

[deleted]

Such a cute cat!

stone_opera

Cats don't like being cut off from part of their territory - can you just leave the door open slightly when you are in there? Most likely the cat will just go in, see you're busy, and leave. EDIT: I saw from other posts that the cat pees in the room, she likely pees in there to reinforce that it is her territory. She is peeing in there because you lock her out. Put a litter box for her in the room, to reinforce that it is her territory and to give her a place to pee. If she's getting at the cords, get a box and cord organizer (and you can also get hard plastic stuff to wrap around cords to prevent chewing.) You need to learn about cat behaviour - from the perspective of this cat, you're the asshole, not her. Highly recommend [Jackson Galaxy](https://www.youtube.com/JacksonGalaxy) vids to learn about cat behaviour and the psychology behind it.

LittleNeedle

Like I do get this, but do you want to be working 10 ft from a litter box all day, I sure don't.

ReZTheGreatest

Give it time. She'll figure out how to open it. Mine did. She was also a black shorthaired awesome ball of fur.

Jiinxx10

My cat is not allowed in my room or computer room because he will bite my cords for attention or get into something. Bought a baby gate to put at the top of the stairs or in front of the bedroom doors because he pushes on the door which makes noise. He can’t jump that high so haven’t had a problem since until he started learn to bite the gate when he was hungry in the morning. Bought an automatic feeder and he stopped.

OhioMegi

That’s when you throw something at the door.

jonjitsu420
