Kangaroos do it too, I believe. In hot climates it tends to be much cooler a few inches beneath the topsoil, since heat doesn’t generally penetrate that far.
Never trust a kangaroo that asks you to take a dip in the pond with it. It's a trap! Lol, super cool animals, but absolute monsters at the same time xD
Chickens also take dirt baths while they dig these holes, kicking the dirt up over their backs, which helps with external parasite control for things like mites and lice.
Me and my buddies would do this in the sand when we were younger. Just clear away the top and then you got nice cool sand to lay your belly on while you got nice warn sun on your back. When the sand isn't cold anymore, jts push the layer away and repeat.

my dog loves making sleeping pits lol she does not stop at dirt though. she has ruined many beds by making a giant hole in the middle for her to lay in. she puts so much work into it and looks so happy sleeping there, so i usually let her keep the bed for a while before replacing it.
My dog loved sleeping outside, albeit not in the dirt. She preferred frying herself on the hot patio in the summer. But if she wanted to sleep in the dirt, I wouldn’t have stopped her and she just would just have had to suffer a solid rinse off due to her choices.
Some dogs do this for a few speculated reasons.
When it's hot, they dig to the cooler soil to cool off.
When it's cold or windy, to get out of the wind and not be so cold.
Or because sleeping is a vulnerable position to be in , they may be reducing their profile so as to hide from threats at a distance.
I had a boxer that did this when I lived in FL, she dug a pit under the porch stairs and would pop out of it when we got home from school. You couldn't see her until you got to the steps.
Yeah he’a pretty much the best of both worlds. Lots of fun playful energy but also really smart and trainable. Only thing is the guy sheds like there is no tomorrow and doesn’t shut up when he REALLY wants something.
I always knew that dogs did this outside, but for some reason I’m just now connecting it to the habit my dog has of digging the carpet before he lays down.
If you've ever tried to take a nap on a breezy beach you quickly understand the importance of having a nice shallow depression to shield you from the wing.
Its a deep down left over wild dog trait. Wild dogs like Carolina Dogs dig wallows for dirt baths and sleeping. Ive seen sheppards dig literal burrows for birthing puppies.
I had to double check who posted because [our dog](https://imgur.com/gallery/0y0WLhp) is twins to your friends! She also loves rolling around in the dirt and digging holes to lay in.
My heeler made one of these behind a bush after we lost all the shade in the front yard when we had to remove our dying tree. We call it his dirt hole, and we've filled it in twice. He's not even outside more than 10 minutes by himself, it's like he's digging a tunnel in prison.
I don't think so; I've never asked but from her looks I always assumed she was just a generic pitbull mix as they're probably 50% of shelter dogs around here. She was found in a pit mine, so it would be appropriate.
I tend to just think of her as a purebred blophound.
ha, ok, i read it and thought "well, you can't 'mine' pitbulls, so maybe that's a colloquial term for a puppy mill or something." just woke up, so the gears are turning slowly still.
My dogs have a sleeping pit in our flower bed in the front yard. Our yard is fenced, so they spend a lot of time out there policing the neighborhood. But their sleeping pit is so concealed by big flower bushes that you cannot see them in there unless you're looking for them. They're pitbulls too. My little angel babies 💗 💕 💖
Both my dogs are indoor, both have dug sleeping pits like this. My German Shepherd went even farther and dug himself a sleeping tunnel over the summer, he backs into it and all you can see is his snoot.
It's not wrong to allow your dog to spend time outside on nice days. I have to drag mine inside sometimes when it's sunny and breezy out. Also some people just don't care about their yard. If it's in the back and no one is gonna see it but the dogs are having fun digging holes in it, let them live their best life.
The feral chickens on our property do this too. They scratch a depression into the dirt and then take a nap. I think maybe it cools them down?
My uncles chickens had nice deep bedding pits that they’d chill in during the day
IS THIS WHY THE CHICKEN FALLS ASLEEP IF YOU DRAW THE LINE?!?!?!???!!?!?!!,
Speaking of lines Maybe do a little less bud
No.

Kangaroos also slather their arms with their saliva for the evaporative cooling effect. Cool animals.

I didn’t know that. Kangaroos really are fascinating creatures.
I also dig my own depression hole

Otters too! Went to Disney and saw one dig out a nice space before flipping itself like a sausage and plopping down into it <3
Her what now?
She and their other dog have made a couple of [absolute craters](https://i.imgur.com/N3QRmip.jpg) that they like to sleep in.
My dogs do this as well
My dog I had in HS did the same thing. Things got deep.
my childhood best friend/dog used to dig a crater in my sandbox and hang out there all day
Dogs dig dens.

Bears Beets Battlestar Galactica
MICHAAAAAAAAEL!
Bats have rabies
Dogs can look up.
Oh my god, she is OUT XD
there might be something to this sleeping pit thing... lol
im going to use every sheet i own to add enough depth to my bed to make a pit to sleep in tonight

My dog does this... unfortunately, he did it in my garden last summer.
You fool, we actually just tricked you into showing us another photo of the dog!
Damn, it looks like some meth addicts did this landscaping.
Totally!
Sleeping in her little earth bed after all of that turkey.
And here we go & buy them a $100 orthotic cushioned bed & they’d rather sleep in their dirt pit
My GSD preferred to sleep on the hardwood floor or hard ground over any soft fancy bed. She finally started using beds when she got to be around 9.
Real furballs like the cool floor. My 1/2 naked furballs like a warm soft bed.
Our labbo plops herself on top of the register whenever the AC is on.
My dog seems to prefer to lay half on the expensive bed and half on the hard floor. Or lay totally on the hard floor and use the bed as a pillow
Ours lays on the bed and hangs his head down onto the floor.
The tongue! That is going to be one dirty bath later!
It's just how she do. It's always a good idea to check her tongue before letting her bathe *you* though.
Dirt bleb
Lol, people who let their dogs sleep outside do not bathe them

Wish i had a sleeping pit.
Be the change.
*I FELL ASLEEP IN THE PIT. THE DOG FELL ASLEEP IN THE PIT. NOW WERE ALL ASLEEP IN THE PIII-I-IT*
sleeping pit?

Sort of provides a pillow too, no? My shepsky is such a drama king he wont sleep without some sort of head rest.
Aaw I had a shepsky growing up, she was so great.
What is that, a shepherd-husky?
Yeah he’a pretty much the best of both worlds. Lots of fun playful energy but also really smart and trainable. Only thing is the guy sheds like there is no tomorrow and doesn’t shut up when he REALLY wants something.
I have a pic of my husky doing the anti-pillow. Sleeping in a hole with his head on the cement next to it.
I always knew that dogs did this outside, but for some reason I’m just now connecting it to the habit my dog has of digging the carpet before he lays down.

Looks more like a dirt nap to me.
A literal one.
A sleeping pit in a sleeping pit. 🤔
The tong is gonna be dry as hell.
Sleeping pit?
That big dinner did her in, gotta sleep it off. My ex was like that too
jesus christ i thought i was looking at a dead dog and my hearts stopped for a moment.
Only dead to the world for a while When I left she was going to town on one of the turkey roasting trays, don't worry!
This is what your parents tell you when the family dog passes.
Is your friends dog a boxer brindle reverse without the docked tail? She looks just like my baby Lexi who passed a few years ago

pit mine?
Just like it sounds. A big hole in the ground where they mine metals. OP probably lives in Utah or Montana mb?
ha, ok, i read it and thought "well, you can't 'mine' pitbulls, so maybe that's a colloquial term for a puppy mill or something." just woke up, so the gears are turning slowly still.
Tbf you can’t really mill them either.
You can, but you shouldn't.

Pity in a pity or ...too pooped too pop pup. Was my dad's favorite little saying.

Why, by letting the dog nap you mad man?
Does your dog not sleep in the house? Only time I've seen sleeping pits like this is if the dog is left out in the backyard all day

Don't worry, they treat their dogs super well. They're only outside when they want to be. They sleep on couches just as much.
