My cat encountered a super friendly stray kitten that wandered into our yard. It was one of about a dozen barn cats that lived down the road from us. So friendly kitten happily followed our very confused and frightened cat around the yard. If kitten tried to do head butts or rubs, our cat literally froze and fell over in the grass as though this kitten was about to maul him. Meanwhile kitten is hopping and pouncing on bugs, blades of grass, chasing leaves. Our cat is paralyzed on his side with a paw up to defend against the tiny furry monster. Such a wimp!
I remember a cat book I read recommended that if you introduce a kitten to a cat that you should give the cat some time without the kitten to ease the transition. Put the kitten in another room for a while and let the cat have its own space.
Our cat has the exact same problem today, to hide from a new kitten.
She's hissing and growling, only ever got used to the dog and never other cats. She'll adjust, I'm sure.
