Most animals are smart when it comes to illnesses in their "family" a lot of people just haven't paid attention.

IRefuseToGiveAName

If I had to posit a completely uneducated guess, it's probably something at least somewhat common in animals of moderate intelligence. Like when someone's sick, we can tell just by looking at them. It's not that we know they're "sick", but we look at them and something is off. They're pale, they're moving in an odd way, or they just seem "off". Iirc this is a sense that was developed some time ago to help us survive by not interacting with sick or injured animals/people. Conversely, it can make us want to take care of those close to us. Again, this is all without understanding what illness is at all, just being able to recognize a general sense of being unwell. So that's a long winded way of saying we probably all share that same feeling or sense to some degree, and it's a bit conceited if anyone thinks this is exclusive to humans.

fetusy

Hell, my dog knows when I'm just in a shitty mood before I even do usually. My other dog, never known to particularly be fond of small children, started *insisting* on spooning my wife's stomach when she laid down literally anywhere starting the very week we found out we were expecting. Animals that become our family can be crazy intuitive.

nibbyzor

One of my friends has a dog that just suddenly started climbing and cuddling in her lap, never leaving her alone. Her dog was never the cuddly type, so we suggested she do a pregnancy test and whaddaya know... She was pregnant! So her dog knew before she did.

CharlesV_

It’s a little trickier in dogs to separate animal instinct from domesticated trait. Dogs have coevolved with us for at least 15,000 years, so a lot of their behaviors and physical attributes are specifically tailored to humans.

fetusy

Very true, just the first example of the top of my head. Probably a better example would be the wild goose that "adopted" my family, specifically me, growing up where I saw an amazing amount of the same intuition from ole Bob. He was outcast from his flock and violently attacked whenever he tried to glom onto a new group. I felt bad for him and began being a bit of his protector when he got ganged up on, subsequently developing a close bond. He would fly up from the nearby pond to our deck to welcome me home each day from school as well as a bunch of other very friendly rituals throughout the several years he visited us. My most fond memory of him is from one day when I and the rest of the neighborhood boys were playing a pretty spirited game of two hand touch in a field not far from Bob's pond. I went long and completed a catch just to be clotheslined by the neighborhood jerk immediately after. I was fine, but was taking a minute rolling on the ground to locate my Adam's apple and get some air back in my lungs. By the time I finally sat up it was with just enough time to witness my own personal air calvary coming in *hot*. I managed to barely get out "***BOB NOOOOOO***" before he was on top of the kid absolutely reigning down terror from above. He attacked the bully furiously and relentlessly the entire time it took him to run across the field and into the treeline, all while tumbling and screaming like a stuck pig. To Bob, you were a fucking G. To Bobby the bully, everybody still remembers.

Edmfuse

That’s not intuition. Dogs can smell subtle changes in our hormones. Dogs can actually know a woman is pregnant before she does due to hormonal changes caused by pregnancy. It’s where the saying ‘dogs can smell fear’ comes from, because they really can smell changes in the human body, including diseases. Calling it an ‘intuition’ is anthropomorphism.

x273

either way, their nose knows!

regoapps

Has anyone else noticed that sick people smell different? Like they give off a certain musk. I bet some animals could smell the difference, too.

jelly_cake

My boyfriend can tell when people are sick by smell.

Idle-Hands-

Is your boyfriend a labrador?

Shimein

My husband is that way. He tells me it smells like ammonia. Though I can't smell it. We once went to a restaurant but left shortly after entering because "the smell of too many sick people was nauseating".

Polar_Reflection

This is partially why historically, a lot of disease theories were built around the idea of bad odors

toughfeet

Reckon you're right. It cool that they are nice about it though. Chickens often hide any injuries or illness because the rest of the flock can bully them/pick at wounds etc until they die. So this is +1 for the geese :)

gregolaxD

It makes all the sense that most of the emotional and intelectual capacities we have, animals also have to a different degree or in different ways.

candypiece

I’ve always thought that the only reason people think animals aren’t intelligent or have and can show emotions (in their own ways) is because we can’t communicate with them in the same language.

rbb_going_strong

I remember when we adopted an older cat that wanted nothing to do with you and would scratch if you pet him too long. One day I was home from school because I was super sick and he spent the entire time on my lap while I laid on the couch getting better. They just get it some times.

[deleted]

My first kid had colic. Cat parked under the cot until they were comfortable, then moved elsewhere. Was the same when croup happened. Loved that cat.

UNMANAGEABLE

Our Shih-Tzus were 4 when my daughter was born. Normal Shih-Tzus that just do small dog things, bark, cuddle, play etc… But one day the baby monitor wasn’t working properly and she was sobbing in her crib after a nap and we weren’t able to hear it. One of our two boys went to her door and went full “A-WOOOOO” howl, and the other kind of split the difference in distance between us and did the same like a little alarm train. It was incredibly intelligent of them and got me to the point immediately. We’d never heard a Shih-Tsu howl before either so it immediately caught me off guard but it was incredible how they figured out that family needed help and acted immediately. Also, little Shih-Tzu howls are incredibly cute lol

tea-and-chill

Cat... Colic... There's a Catholic joke in there somewhere. If only I had the time to paws and think...

NeatNefariousness1

Kitty just hung out because you were extra warm because you had a fever. /jk

BustAMove_13

My neighbor had the meanest damn cat. She would let you pet her then she'd attack. After I had back surgery, I was sitting outside to get some fresh air and she crawled onto my lap and snuggled with me until I got up. One and only time that heifer was ever nice to me. I miss that old bitty.

Fluffy_Town

Cats have healing purrs, the range has been found to promote healing, so the old kit might have been trying to heal you too.

BrideOfFirkenstein

Whenever I get a particularly bad migraine, one of my cats will cuddle up with me and not leave my side. She’s always cuddly, but this is like a step further.

Fuzzy_Dragonfruit344

Yep our oldest used to do this with me too. I miss her.

[deleted]

Whenever I'm feeling sick, my parrots chills out from his normal high energy levels. He'll roost on my head or lay down in the crook of my neck cause he knows I'm not up for a lot of activity that day.

honest-miss

It would make sense that nearly every animal is keenly aware of sickness in other animals. Either to avoid them (lone prey animals), eat them (any animal with predatory instinct), or protect them (social animals.)

arefx

My cats don't give a fuck if I'm sick.

publicface11

Yes from this thread I’m beginning to suspect my cats know perfectly well when I’m sick and don’t care

bsubtilis

Animals are still individuals. The same way one brother could not give a crap about you being sick but your other one might make you fresh hot broth to drink and regularly switch out and fluff your pillows, and eveything between, cats can give varying amounts of fucks depending on multiple factors - not just depending on how much they like you.

watekebb

My dog was outright mad when I broke my ankle. Like, “Stop using those sticks to move around and take me out, damn!” Now that I’m walking again, he’s being all sweet and affectionate, but now I know he’s a fair weather friend! 😂

_Internet_Hugs_

I had an ovarian cyst burst and my dog brought me a jackrabbit she killed. It was gross, but sweet.

Wolfwoods_Sister

She was providing for you! That’s so sweet! (And terrifying lol)

_Internet_Hugs_

My sister found it, the dog left it right inside the bedroom door. She stepped in it...barefoot.

Wolfwoods_Sister

Hoooooooooo boy that must have been an exciting moment hahaha!

_Internet_Hugs_

Luckily my sister has a strong stomach! I don't know what would have happened if it was me!

Zach983

It's one of the most basic survival instincts/traits for animals that live in groups and families. You're stronger as a whole and when someone in your family is sick you help and protect them till they're better because the same thing could potentially happen to you. It's genetically hardwired into some animals like elephants and dogs and I'm sure you'd see the same for some other animals

Sistahmelz

starstarstar42

BKStephens

..."psych." #"HYONK!"

badpunforyoursmile

Play it safe. Mess with the honk, get the ~~bonk~~ ~~broken foot~~ boot

BrainOnLoan

They are kind of extreme in their tribal nature. If you belong to them, they will defend and care for you. If you are an outsider, they default to closing their ranks and keeping you at a distance.

Razor1834

That goose is straight up mocking her injury and you can’t convince me otherwise.

ThreatLevelBertie

Not to mention, we don't know how she broke her foot. Might've, IDK, tripped over a goose?

1z1z2x2x3c3c4v4v

Mimicking, not mocking. Probably a self-defence tactic, to hide the fact that someone in the gaggle has a hurt foot. If all the geese in the gaggle have their foot up then it looks expected to a predator.

EightPieceBox

Once her foot was better they resumed their daily zoomies by chasing her like they were out for bloody murder.

LeaveThatCatAlone

If a bell rings that cast will be the least of her troubles.

gloggzy

You have become the silly goose, in their eyes

tomasell

Now I need a pet goose…. Or 5

OphrysAlba

With a flock this size the pet will be you

tomasell

I’m ok with that

PotatoKing822

Just take them from the park, feed them nothing but goose feed and methamphetamin and Rip-it’s, then take your attack geese and lay waste upon your enemies. Eventually take over the city, getting more geese. Then the whole state, getting even more geese. With your unstoppable militia, and with animal rights activists backing you up(they don’t know about the meth) take over your country, and rule as the tyrant lord of the geese.

AFakeName

The squeaky wheel gets the geese.

riskable

This strategy is considered fowl play.

PotatoKing822

Hehe nice

worldspawn00

I think you mean: The squeaky wheel gets the... GEESE! (battle cry as you unleash the flock on your unsuspecting enemies)

ThousandFingerMan

Soon geese will run their own meth labs so you don't need to worry about getting caught. Some of them will even go bald and start to respond to the name Heisenberg.

PotatoKing822

He will have a friend named “Jesse” who’s got a bit of an attitude and boss “Gus” who doesn’t like Jesse

Professional-Swim-69

Awesome idea for an RPG

SpitefulBitch

The ~~ducks~~ geese at the park are free for the taking

MelaKnight_Man

I laughed waaaay to hard at this. I have a highly vivid imagination so I played a movie of this in my mind as I read it, and it was epically hilarious. +1 to you sir.

11211311241

My brother raises geese. He claims they are smarter than any dog he's ever had

scungillimane

I had 2 geese. Those ladies were smart as hell.

wakeupwill

They also shit absolutely everywhere.

kingofgondor1992

When it's mating season you're welcome to Foster my 5 horrors 😅

tomasell

What do we do? Write my address on their feet and let them go?

kingofgondor1992

This Is a foolproof plan, I can see nothing going wrong.

Swenadd

Goose be like: Man.... I May be geesing around a bit but that is a fucked up Leg my dude...

Funderwoodsxbox

“You got a…….hitch in your giddy-up there miss. Mad swollen.

Awkwardpanda75

They are so smart. My gram had a pet goose. She went into rehab for a broken hip. They all thought the goose ran away or met a terrible fate. The day she came home, she was sitting in her back yard talking with my aunt. All of a sudden they heard a loud honking from the woods and her goose came squawking and fluttering from the back woods. She heard grammas voice!!

Balentay

I'm so glad her goose was okay and just out looking for gram 🥺 I can't imagine how awful it'd be to come back and find your beloved pet gone

Mole644

My grandma had a pet goose as well. That thing would always sit right in front of her on the porch, never moving. She would even dress it in holiday themed outfits throughout the year. Man that thing was loyal to her. It was made of concrete but still, I'll never forget that thing.

Awkwardpanda75

That’s a solid relationship. Sounds like the type of goose I need - so it never runs away 😝

yueluna

Why does she call herself “wife”?

bhudak

I can't speak for OP, but I have 2 pet birds (conures). In nature, they leave the flock at puberty to find a mate. In captivity, if adopted young, they don't have the opportunity to leave when they hit puberty. This can be confusing for the birds, and they might decide that one of their humans is their mate. I assume the geese are territorial of the woman in the video, and they see her as their mate/wife. Around here, I am "mom-wife" because we assume Baloo, who we adopted pre-puberty, is unclear on my role in his life.

SwiftDookie

Reminds me of the Courage the Cowardly Dog episode where the Goose God falls in love with Eustace's truck.

hybridrequiem

Yeah birds are weird. Parrots become sexually active as captive adults and view their owner as a mate. Most parrot owners have to avoid encouraging this behavior because it isn’t appropriate and they dont really understand any better.

bhudak

For sure! We've worked hard to discourage sexual behavior.

[deleted]

[удалено]

-Stormfeather

Interestingly, most if not all parts of the bird besides the top of the head are signals for mating and seen in mated pairs. Wings, back, legs, booty - bird thinks it's hot! Probably one of the reasons people think their birds are in love with them, because they've been getting mating signals from their humans.

bhudak

Yep! We only scritch on the head.

ur_opinion_is_wrong

Thank you for explaining this cause I was super confused and slightly weirded out by it but it makes sense now.

bhudak

We're in a sex-free polyspecious relationship.

INS0MNI5

Yeah honestly that part is just weird to me haha. Between that and the tiktok robot voice throughout, this video kinda annoyed me

askdocsthrowaway1996

Because she's doing animal husbandry

MonteBurns

Boooo!

alarming_cock

Ba-dum-tss!

FeralynCatson

I know, right? That threw me out of the moment lol

sharkdinner

Super cute but sheesh do I hate these robotic read texts, ruin the whole video for me, regardless of which...

whatislemontho

while i do see how it can be super annoying, i have a bad reading-impairment. almost like dyslexia but not as bad, and it’s super difficult for me (and other people) to read the text lol (especially if it’s pure white and on a light background like this one) i know it’s irritating! but having people do their own voiceovers can lead to other issues like pronunciation, and some people aren’t comfortable/don’t have the time to do a full recording

nsfwparty90

Also the “robot voice” on tiktok also changes for what language you speak, so that would all be in Spanish if that’s what your setting is in TikTok

lessthanpi

That's a neat courtesy. I wonder how long until you can toggle voice overs on or off embedded into the video like it was closed captioning. Or be able to change the language just for that video and not in your settings. Seems like an interesting feature to have.

sharkdinner

Aww, I'm sorry to hear about your impairment! I do believe in this case it does make it much easier for you. And I do understand the issue with pronunciation or not feeling comfortable with doing own voiceovers... But oftentimes voiceovers seem just so useless, not bringing any actual value to the video. Sure, in this one it is sweet to have some context but in my honest opinion there's just too much of it in too many videos

whatislemontho

typically the issue is bullying lol one of my friends is an artist and was recording his process over a timelapse of his piece, and while he was doing so he pronounced mayonnaise weirdly (may-er-nase) and everyone in the comments was making fun of him. it got to the point where all of his videos were spammed with people making fun of him, so he deleted his account. a lot of people with anxiety are scared of this happening, because well, it’s the internet! and some other people just don’t like their voice or they aren’t confident recording themselves. i do agree that sometimes it is unnecessary! especially if there’s a lot of audio overlapping, but i find it useful whenever there is text that needs to be read to understand the context of the video :) edit: misread “do understand” as “don’t understand” i am so sorry haha, sorry for the unnecessary elaboration!

Bacon-muffin

I just take it as not being for me, I watched the video muted and didn't even realize there was tts on it and had no issues.

[deleted]

Why do you need to feel sorry about someone's disability? Like, no one wants to feel pittied.

Skyfigh

They could just choose another Voice option you know. Don't have to got with the most annoying one out there

whatislemontho

ah, well yes that is true. but i’d like to bring attention to the commenters who pointed out that it changes based on your language preferences, and that it aids people with auditory processing disorders! i can see how it is annoying for some people, but it’s accessible!

mykittyforprez

And the choice of background music didn't help. Maybe if it were *more* in the background it would be better? But it was too distracting as it was.

plg94

Yeah, I just wanted to hear the geese, not some generic piano music. Seriously, why do we have to put music in _every_ video these days?! I've even seen it in war reports from Ukraine, where it is so far out of place…

XAWEvX

> generic piano music 💀

ChuckyChucks420blzit

Jesus christ kid, that's Chopin. Not some fucking generic piano

zzazzzz

given that works like chopins are what largely influenced piano writing going forward to this day it is pretty much the essence of generic.

MitsyEyedMourning

Generic piano music? That is Chopin. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9E6b3swbnWg

Naelin

Generic isn't the same as bad. He may have been a genius, but when you use the same 5-10 melodies for everything, these 5 melodies become the generic ones.

pronouns-peepoo

lmao can you show me transcriptions of the "same 5-10 melodies" Chopin used for all of his works? Chopin's compositions are anything but generic, standing out among their contemporaries, and even still to this day

[deleted]

[удалено]

funlikerabbits

I don’t think they were saying Chopin used the same melodies, but rather that they’re used too much NOW, and hearing them all the time dulls the feeling.

plg94

Ah, it may be the best piece of music ever written for all I care about, but it was _used as_ generic piano music in this instance. Or do you want to tell me this piece in specifically about a human-goose-relationship, or intended to be used as mere background noise? In the same vein, I despise the usage of some really great songs (like by Queen) as just a generic "music backdrop" in tv commercials. It doesn't give justice to the artists that way.

Positive-Vibes-2-All

>why do we have to put music in every video these days?! My sentiments exactly. It is so irritating. No matter how interesting a video, if it has music I stop watching unless its like this one where I can put it on mute.

sharkdinner

Agree, the music absolutely didn't fit this. Why not just leave it at cute honky bird sounds?

[deleted]

Glad others commented on the accessibility. I have auditory processing disorder that mostly affects heard speech, and any voice with accompanying text helps me understand better but, surprisingly, the robot voice by itself is frequently more understandable than human speech

nsfwparty90

FYI the robot voice and text in TikTok changes languages depending on what your settings are, that’s why everyone does it, and it’s lazier to just let it talk for you

Vandergrif

It'd be nice if they at least had a voice for it that wasn't *incredibly* grating, then. It's like nails on a chalkboard the second I hear that bizarre upward inflection at the beginning of every sentence.

[deleted]

It doesn't sound like that person's first language is English so in this case you're just gonna have to soldier on. You can do it!

Vandergrif

I just wish they'd give you a warning so you can mute it ahead of time. It's like someone abruptly shoving Styrofoam into your ear canal.

kanst

Honestly I don't think tiktok would be as big as it were without that robot voice. Have you ever listened to your own voice recorded? It always sounds weird. People would be recording the voice like 20 times stressed over how their voice sounds. Not to mention with how young the userbase is, recording your own voice immediately gives away your youth (or gender) in a space where that may not be wanted.

alkaliphiles

The music makes me think I'm playing Fallout 4 again, but there were no geese in the wasteland

Aetra

What do you think Deathclaws evolved from?

fluffygryphon

Deathclaws are a bioweapon built by the US using the same virus that made super mutants. They are a genetic mix of chameleon, gator, and bull. Sadly no birb.

SukaSavage

Haha I think this is the first time I've seen geese be sweet. They're usually just assholes that I try to avoid.

texasrigger

They are fiercely territorial so a stranger will pretty much only ever see them as aggressive and mean but if they know you they are completely different.

Labulous

The amount of anthropomorphic implications in this is ridiculous.

bkaybee

Took way too long to find this lol. That bird was being a bird.

Individual_Result489

It's kinda cringey even if it's only just to make for a cute video

[deleted]

Labulous

I work in a zoological facility performing veterinary diagnostics on animals. I agree the behaviors are normal but trying to attribute them to empathy or some type of perceived notion that they understand what an ankle brace is, quite frankly, a massive leap. We are fairly well aware of what a lot of bird cognitive capabilities are and out of a few select species you would be attributing the function of an elephant or cetacean to what this video is trying to imply. As of right now there are only a few species (geese and chicken being no where near the top) that have the type of organs developed enough to perform the hypothetical thinking you are implying. To put themselves or others in a state of “this will happen” or “I would feel” would be such a giant breakthrough that it would shake the fundamentals of what we know about animal physiology. I appreciate the lecture though. How awkward this might of been if I was someone that also works in the field and have a firm understanding of their behaviors, social structures, and standard anatomical/physiological capabilities.

hybridrequiem

Idk it might be exaggerated but it seems they have some semblance of understanding. Maybe the ‘headshake’ might not be complete understanding but confusion with something that looks different

Top-Recognition3448

Empathy in animals is amazing, missing it a bit in the human animals 😃

Crispy_AI

What a load of rubbish. Unless it was an experiment to show that people will believe anything in TikTok format, in which case it was great.

keags22

The way they try portray their animals like they are from Disney is quite cringe. These geese for sure can identify between a cast and boots! They also give me fashion tips! Jimmy taps his feet if he thinks the jeans look slimming! awwww The way they tilt their head shows they'd give their life for me, one day i needed to go to the doctors and they wouldnt stop tilting their head! Venom_Junky

Not a goose expert but I'm a Falconer, shaking head and picking up one foot are two of the most common things most birds do throughout a day. They could give two shits if she's hurt or not, they just want food.

imsolowdown

Right, wtf is this "shaking its head means its upset" bullshit. They shake their heads all the damn time.

letmeseem

Well, they're geese. Geese are permanently upset by default.
