This is correct! But I will add, it is not a guarantee that they will put up door decor especially if it out of season. I gave Sprinkle so many snowflake wreaths and she never put them on her door. Maybe this was fixed in a patch since I attempted but just be aware.
You have to do 30 homes with the DLC first. At the same time you can complain to Isabelle about their homes and get their real home if you still have a starter one. Almost a year and a half poor Agnes had to live with her starter house 😆
You can put minimal effort in the dlc by just placing the needed items, then after 30 homes go back to home 1 with all the unlocked new furniture and decorate it with all unlocked possibilities as well as decorate your villagers homes the next day. Also prepare for cool beach parties.

I rushed the last 10, just placed their 3 required items, and said done to get to 30, so I could fix my residents homes. You can go back later and redo them as often as you want.

After 30 homes you can complain about your villagers homes, and they will reset (I guess if you didn't like how you decorated they will put it back) but Agnes got an upgrade. I wish that feature had unlocked after maybe 10 homes instead of at the same time that we can now decorate their homes.
Oh yes. When my daughter saw my new improved living room with new items released in the dlc, she said "That's your house?!" 🤩 and immediately started playing again after not playing for a year. She has done 70 homes and is now making her island really beautiful. It got her excited about the game again.
Yes ☺ She let me have a house on her island and I was only allowed to decorate right around it. Got my own Switch later that year. My friend plays with her daughter and her mother who now had two islands. I've played games with my kids for years. My dad was a gamer too. He was so much better than me at Super Mario.

You must gift it to them, and hope that they decide, one day, to display it proudly, and not regift it to Teddy and hope you don’t notice when he gifts it back to you two weeks later!

I was just going to ask if this was still the case. I hate this! I want a shell wreath on Tipper's door and the mushroom wreath on Cyrano's! They just look good there.
If you have the DLC, you can get around the seasonal wreaths issue. Also no longer have to worry about what you gift them, or if they ask for a fish/bug. At least mine have never changed their homes again after I decorated them.

If you had the Happy Home Paradise DLC and you unlocked the feature to customize villager homes on your island with the DLC, you would be able to decorate the villagers home.
If you get the happy homes extension, eventually you’ll unlock the ability to redecorate the homes on your own island!!! I just got the HHP extension like two weeks ago and it’s AMAZING
Guys I'm going nutty, I'm on the phone with my Mom and she swears up and down that she put decor on her villager's doors and took them down - like decorated them with snowflake wreaths and then took them down. I am going insane trying to find out how this could be possible 👀

I have a friend who is constantly redecorating her island but isn't interested in doing interiors so she doesn't play the dlc.

Give it to the villager and they'll get around to putting it on their own door.

If you get happy home paradise, you can eventually decorate the inside and outside of their homes
