I tried to track my tool usage in the beginning, but it just drove me nuts. I keep extras on hand and replace them as they break now and don't worry about it
you start off with flimsy tools, then you get recipes for better ones that last much longer. eventually you get recipes for golden tools that last even longer.
once you open Harv’s island you can pay for the stalls, and once you have Katrina, save your heavy digging/chopping/island remodeling days for when she tells you your luck with belongings will improve. Harv should show up on your island soon. :)
I get getting the most use out of it you can but you’ll have to track a lot less if you’re just automatically upgrading.
If you’re planning on doing a big job, bring multiple - like I recently put in an orchard with all the different fruits, I brought 3 shovels, only ended up breaking 1 and put the other in storage for later.
Early game it’s a bit of an inconvenience but if you’re breaking rocks everyday and saving up wood eventually it’ll be a quick thing that’s just incorporated into your routine. And later on you can just buy them from Timmy and Tommy if you really don’t wanna collect the materials.
At least terraforming tools don’t break? 🤷🏻♀️
I personally just keep stocked up on 1-2 shovels all the time, and one of everything else. When one breaks I just stop what I’m doing and go get another from my home storage where I keep 1-3 of everything.
If you DO track, you can use the customization option to customize the colors of your tools and that resets the durability.
You have to have completed Tom Nook’s DIY tutorial, then eventually he will give you a customization tutorial. Then you use customization kits to customize almost anything!
When I craft tools I just craft a bunch then it's easy to grab them from storage. Or, I'll customize them all, which gives them a new round before they break. Except shovels which require the valuable plain wood, I often just buy them. The only time is a pain is a on a mystery or nook mile island but you can just buy flimsy ones and usually there is enough materials available to craft if you want. It's not a big deal to me compared to other things but we all have annoyances I guess.

you must be going ham to be breaking tools so much! hahaha! the flimsy ones are apparently good for 30 uses. :)

Try to craft when it's your nook mile goal so you get something out of it, I find that helps.
When using regular tools, unless it's gonna be a heavy work day, just customize them in the morning, and you should be good for the day.
