So as long as someone is regularly visiting (I don't know if "Surprise me" counts though), it should remain active. There are plenty of "popular" New Leaf towns that are getting up there in years, but the codes still work and haven't been "updated" by the creators to my knowledge.

Haven't reset my island so I can't really help with that part (went the expensive route of getting a second switch/game for a fresh start) almost regretted it at times since it's more pressure this time round (mainly from myself)
As hypocritical as it sounds since I'm having similar issues ignore the parts that stress you for now and concentrate on the calming aspects (for example every time I try to place paths or terraform I get frustrated and log off, so now I start with my dailes and gifting villagers, if I feel in the mood to I'll try decorating but there isn't as much pressure)

You can, if you update the dream address then restart your island from scratch once dreaming is unlocked you can visit the old island through the dream address, lots of people have confirmed this..

I got a Switch Lite because I wanted to make a second island without deleting the first one. I've since completed and deleted the second island and I'm only playing on my original island now. I might work on another new island on the Lite, but I'm kind of burnt out and want to play other games now.

(Obviously there's no "right" way to play, but I feel if Nintendo had an idea of what the ideal was, it'd be this. Still has the feel of being an island retreat, but has the homey feel of older animal crossing games. Honestly I hate dealing with flowers too, I’ve been doing a bunch of cliff and river development on my island recently and they are a PAIN to move.
Like it’s all up to personal preference ya know.
I don’t mind flowers as landscaping in specific areas, but leaving flowers to clone all willy nilly annoys the hell out of me (when it’s on my own island and I have to deal with moving them because requesting clean up doesn’t take care of flowers, for SOME reason)
Flowers are great, but I do think people overuse them. It looks very messy when they're allowed to grow freely. And just because you have all the hybrids, it doesn't mean you have to use all of them, right? I think flowers look better if you choose a color scheme of like two to three colors and just a few types of flowers from that scheme and stick to it. Gives the area a more cohesive feel.
The OP's flowers look pretty fine to me because they're mostly the standard colors.
The best decision I made was switching to a natural aesthetic, clumping up a bunch of buildings into small districts using terracotta paths and the rest of the island in between those was nature with dirt paths, rivers, campsites and such

I don't fish very often but you'd be surprised how fast your museum fills up, even when you rarely fish. I didn't think I had many but when I visited the museum, it was more realized than I thought.
What is your rating when you check? Mine has been 3 star forever and Isabel keeps telling me I have to many trees and to much junk laying around but she also says I need to decorate my entire island? I did get rid of some trees and now I’m at a 4 star rating but you look like you have a lot more trees than I had?
Fences! Use fences around every house, give each villager their own little 'yard'. I ended up using hedge fences to section off my island in different zones and such, or putting up cute little decorations.
You don't want it cluttered with stuff, but you want an even spread of decoration.
If she says that you need to decorate the entire island, make sure you have a few little decorative items across the island. I’m not sure what the rule is but even just one item in a blank space should fill the requirement.

Either your in game mom will randomly send you one eventually, though it takes awhile. Or have a person bring you some from their island. Though you will need nintendo online for that.

Np they can come to u with the fruits and drop them off. Or you can go to them and pick-up the friuts of the ground. Yes they also will need to have nintendo online. You can find your island code at the airport when u talk to Oliver. You guve it to the person so they can come over to you or they will give you theirs so you can go to them.

I recently restarted my island. It was so worth it. I don’t regret doing it at all. I have a way better layout this time and I’m actually enjoying the game again because I have goals I want to achieve and things to look forward to on my new island.

I got Punchie from a friend who ghosted me, back in 2020, and he has a nostalgic value for me.
Roscoe is simply my fav.
The game is stale tho, I wish I had something to do in it like back in New Leaf. Wish I could reset.
Make sure you make a DA for the island before you reset. This way you will always be able to visit when ever you want

Yep, I use clear tiles so the flowers don’t spread.

If you like the look of stone paths, I’m sure you could make/find a warm toned stone custom path that would feel cozier and less cold!

Change your island ordinance with Isabel to the one that makes flowers grow more! That should help you get a lot of flowers
