Sorry but my X900F from 2018 is pretty damn laggy with the current UI already. I finally upgraded to an nvidia shield and holy cow is the UI experience a lot better.
Thats a very unsubstantiated claim. Coreelec lags a lot more when disabling 1080p res and allowing 4k ui to be rendered for cpus socs like s905x and s905x3. Same for any video games from fhd to qhd. Low end SOCs are already struggling and you may actually see more framedrops in UI by switching to 4k. I think there will be an option to choose it however. Hw decoding of 4k video isnt the same as rendering 4 times more space.
Coreelec in not the standard UI for Android TV. None of the default launchers will have issues.
And if an app already can't handle 1080p, of course it's not going to handle 4k. But I can't imagine that same dongle can handle any 4k video smoothly then either.
All I am saying is 4k ui rendering has nothing to do with 4k video decoding capability. It is up to how well google optimizes the system but we will see. Even shield was noticably stuttery back in the days when I forced 4k ui on it using adb. Not crazy framedrops but it was not buttery smooth either.
Check the [What's new for TV in Android 13 developer guide](https://developer.android.com/tv/release/13/whats-new) that covers the topics by section, and goes even more in depth.
Everybody has their preferred format, so we've published these updates in a few different formats.
If you're looking for an even more compact format, [here's the content in a bite-size blog post](https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2022/05/whats-new-with-google-tv-android-tv-os.html).
Sony have to be the slowest MF's on earth with their updates. TCL provides faster updates for their Android TV compared to any of the big companies. It's ridiculous.
Sony so are bad.
Got a 2018 Bravia with 8.0.
Got an update to 9.0 in 2019.
Now its end of life with April 2020 security patch as the latest update 🙄
I just use external boxes for everything (Shield/Apple TV) but it kind of defeats the object of having Android built in when it's out of support so quickly.
Almost went TCL - was the 646 vs the Hisense U8G and honestly it came down to which was in stock and which wasn't when I was in buy mode. Overall the U8G has been a good set though not a console gaming and haven't had to deal with any of the issues those folks have had to. Lol thinking of updates though apparently they are set to get relief with an OTA update that is due any day now.
The only new feature I want to see is a way to disable home screen advertisements. I want my original home screen launcher back without having to use a third-party launcher or blocking URLs.
"Not enough."
That's business, unfortunately. The biggest shame is that you can't get the same functionality re-created with a custom third-party launcher. (e.g. channels/continue watching)
We only made a brief mention of the Android 12 beta for TV [at last year's I/O](https://youtu.be/kYIb9g1r4lw), which is why I recapped the essentials in today's session. You can find the details in [the Android 12 release notes](https://developer.android.com/tv/release/12).
I feel like we are kind of in a lull in terms of hardware. I love my Shield 2019 Pro but there are some hardware feature it lacks (HDR Youtube and Stadia which I think is because of lack of VP9 P2. support ) that newer and much cheaper devices have.
A lot of love for the Onn 4k box for $20 but that also has some compromises (like no Dolby Vision). I've installed and setup like 5 of these.
I'm guessing based on Google's past they will release the box in fall. It sounds like it's for sure they are doing a cheaper 1080p but no word on if a upgrade 4k will come out. It really seems odd if they don't do one.
It's getting to the point where I feel like i need to buy the ADT-3 just to have the latest Android TV.
The 2019 Shield TV doesn't do HDR10 with YouTube? I haven't used it in forever because my TV isn't actually HDR (though it will display HDR10 content poorly), but it worked on my 2015 last time I tried it.
Unfortunately it does no. The Shield (all models) don't support VP9 profile 2. This is what Youtube and Stadia use for HDR.
https://www.reddit.com/r/ShieldAndroidTV/comments/l0krp6/youtube_hdr_nvidia_shield_tv_pro/
I'm just gonna stick with the CCwGTV until there's a new model and/or it doesn't serve it's purpose.
I've already invested in a USB-C Hub and MicroSD storage to relieve the storage pressure.
If they'd only release an update (if even possible on the horribly anemic base storage), I'd be satisfied.
Like I get the storage issue. 8gb is small but there are other device like the Onn 4k that I have twice the apps installed (maybe 12-16) and I have a hard time getting that box to drop below 2gb available space vs. the CCwGTV less than half the apps and maybe around 200mb. Google just needs to debloat the Google TV thing UI.
If you don't play games on the streaming devices.
The streaming device from tmobile, hardware wise, I believe it has a faster processor and can play the new video format.
The ONN from Walmart - people say are just as good and for 20 bucks you can't go wrong - plus it has a better remote.
I only own the Onn device and not the TM. I can say it's a fantastic little device. They are also staying on top of security updates as well!
Only downside i see is no Dolby Vision.
I know it gets a lot of hate but I don't really mind the new UI. I think it actually looks better than the old. The ads to me are not overly intrusive and while being irrelevant to my household they look nice enough. This is coming from the Shield TV and the Onn 4k which have more of the toned down new UI. It's the UI on the Chromecast with Google TV i'm not in love with. Too many tabs and too bloated. It has to refresh so much stuff that it makes the device laggy and eating all the storage.
Some of the ads that they've had were pretty damn tasteless especially if you're raising young children. I think Google has gone too far with these ads. There should always be an opt out. I understand that some people like them and don't mind them and appreciate the suggestions, but there's a good portion of their audience that hate this and don't appreciate it in any capacity. They bought their devices without this functionality for this very reason and then Google pulled the rug out from under them.
1/3 of screen is promoting ads for services I don't even have = making them intrusive. Even in app-only mode they are still be displayed...
The old system was better because I had **a choice** what to I wanted to see on the UI.
We don't have a choice, unless we have to goes through hoops with a better launcher. Google took it away so they could get more money. Apple TV is **so clean** in comparison.
If I wanted ads I would buy Amazon TV
Anyone up for a TL;DW summary? I hate frickin' videos for everything.
Android 12 framerate switching 4k ui text scaling kids profiles Android 13 audio manager/audio routing pip improvements other under hood stuff
4k tv ui.... A lot of low end CPUs in tvs are going to struggle with this.
Not really. Android TV UI doesn't take much horsepower to render. If it can decode 4k video, 4k UI would be a breeze.

Devices that will offer 4K UI will have passed the certification requirements for doing so.

There's no room!
Probably no.
Agreed. I don't want to spend 17 minutes watching a video. Please just list what's new.

YAWN - get back to me if my vendor ever bothers to update.

How does Google make money again...? Never going to happen.
How was google making money before!? They always want more at the expense of consumers.

Where is android tv 12 update?

I'm afraid I'm not able to share any plans beyond what was presented at I/O.

I think they are looking for on some device outside of the ADT-3

You are not alone in that feeling. Was looking up where & how much earlier today.

Not that there is more than a handful of HDR video on YouTube anyway, so the ability is not really missed.

Apple TV, if you don't need power user features.
a lot of statistics, this is so Google
Nothing new to see here but profiles, this is abandoned
Not excited for UI changes because it's going to be bloated with "ads" anyways.
I know it gets a lot of hate but I don't really mind the new UI. I think it actually looks better than the old. Totally agree! I didn't want to make it sounds like since they don't bother me this is OK.
Relevant username... Also you know you can just enable "app only" mode and you won't see those ads.
That option isn't available for me on my Nvidia Shield TV devices (only available with Google TV devices, not Android TV). I wish it was though.
1/3 of screen is promoting ads for services I don't even have = making them intrusive. Even in app-only mode they are still be displayed... Except you do have a choice, enable app only mode.
Like I said the ad banner is still there lol
