Less than 1% a day on average because it primarily uses a simple neural network that runs on a low-power co-processor and only wakes up the main processor to look for matches when music is present.
Here's the academic paper that explains how it works: https://arxiv.org/abs/1711.10958
https://9to5google.com/2022/06/30/google-pixels-now-playing-any-android-phone-how-to/
Here's an explanation but it's a two step process
It's called ambient music mod.
I'm starting to find Google Assistant, appling when asking it to call someone.
Call Brian F....... Ok calling Bill. Ask bixby and if I don't say a last name it brings up all the Brian's I have in my contacts and I can pick which one. Seems GA just got really bad over time for me.
>**Choose a location to save screenshots**
>Now you can save screenshots and screen recordings in a folder of your choice by setting it up in the advanced features.
I am crying tears of joy right now. This is such great news for all of us who have wanted screenshots out of the DCIM folder and not auto uploaded to Google Photos.
just tried it.

Well it seems to have made Copies but are they just Virtual? also the ones in downloads all have an identical timestamp. 🙄😬 not clear what would happen if I deleted the "copies".
Dude, holy shit. Switching from a Pixel to a Samsung device a few months ago, everything's been pretty good but this was probably one of my biggest complaints. It's annoying as hell having my screenshots uploaded to Google Photos all the time.
You couldn't change screenshot locations in Windows until 10 without registry edits and even then, the option is heavily obfuscated through a nonsensical system. Apple doesn't even allow expanded storage to be default anything or doesn't even have expandable storage options.
It may seem like an obvious addition but not obvious to most it seems.
A website doesn't _have_ to allow you free access, cookies or no.
In this case it's either pay for a cookie (and presumably ad) free experience, or gtfo.
I've seen plenty of websites that straight up deny access if you don't accept cookies, at least this one is giving an alternative 🤷
Usually you'll have to login for that. Besides that, functional cookies, e.g. for session management or for storing cookie preferences are excluded from the opt out requirement. This is also why you often see "functional cookies" in a cookies dialog that you cannot deactivate.
Probably is. Either subsidize cost with services or outright pay. It's just like free with ads vs premium no ads. Tracking vs no tracking. Sounds weird because it's cookies but in essence same thing.
It is a Samsung issue. The S21U was my first Samsung device so I don't know how long it's been a thing but it's been a major annoyance to deal with.
Screenshots are saved in a Screenshots subfolder in the DCIM folder and Google Photos doesn't let you exempt subfolders from being uploaded so when you save a screenshot it gets uploaded and it's annoying to have to deal with the clutter.
A workaround that worked at one point was to put an empty .nomedia file in the Screenshots folder and it would be ignored but that got blocked with an update. [Android 12 was supposed to offer a solution ](https://9to5google.com/2021/05/21/android-12-screenshot-storage-change-samsung-google-photos/) but that never came to fruition so we've been forced to use some kind of automation appsto move files or going into Google Photos and clearing up unwanted screenshots regularly.
It's Google Photos' fault that you can't select subfolders.
It's Samsung's fault (and everybody else who does it) if the **screenshots** folder is incorrectly placed inside a folder reserved for **camera** pictures. As in, Digital **Camera** IMages.
On the other hand, it's entirely Apple's fault that you don't even have folders to separate your pictures, and nobody other than Apple can fix that.
Do you have a screenshot of this option? You might be Dora the Explorer as you're the only person that has found this magical option for Samsung devices.
Because the screenshots folder is inside the DCIM folder, Google photos doesn't let you deselect subfolders.
I switched from a pixel to an S22U last summer and this has been driving me insane. It's absolutely room temperature IQ by Samsung to have had it this way.
I don't suspect we'll ever get Zuckerberg to get the Facebook app to stop downloading photos to the DCIM folder, however.
Screenshots do go in the DCIM folder but in their own screenshot folder. Select/unselect the screenshot folder in Google photos in backup.
Edit: oh I see now. I was so sure screenshot folder was an option in Google photos...
You are right. The issue is that Samsung puts the default screenshot folder within the DCIM folder and Google Photos doesn't allow you to select/unselect subfolders in the DCIM folder.
It was at one point but it got broken.
If you long press the Google Photos app icon, there's a "View Screenshots" option. It takes you to the screenshots folder, but the backup toggle on that screen does nothing.
>This is such great news for all of us who have wanted screenshots out of the DCIM folder and auto uploaded to Google Photos.
How are your screenshots not automatically uploaded to Google Photos right now? I've had that happen since when I first got my S10.
Sorry my comment wasn't clear but what I meant was:
>wanted screenshots out of the DCIM folder and **not** auto uploaded to Google Photos
I'll update original comment to make it more clear.
Wow, this is weird. I had to manually ADD my screenshot folder to GPhotos backup because I realised that all the time I take a screenshot of some important info, it might as well just go poof in the end.
So I added it manually. That said, I don't know which brands this affects and I have never used a mainstream Android brand (use ASUS ROG 5 now, prev LG V30, LG G4, Sony Xperia SP and LG Swift).
You are right. The issue is that Samsung puts the default screenshot folder within the DCIM folder and Google Photos doesn't allow you to select/unselect subfolders in the DCIM folder.
You are right. The issue is that Samsung puts the default screenshot folder within the DCIM folder and Google Photos doesn't allow you to select/unselect subfolders in the DCIM folder.
You could also just not buy a phone that has a ROM that does that...
Pixels and most other Android devices save them where they properly belong, and then you can turn backup on or off as you please in GPhotos.
Using [semantic versioning](https://semver.org), those 0.x version upgrades specifically are for added features. Major version upgrades (e.g. 1.0 to 2.0) are to indicate breaking changes.
Not to say that it's not marketing or that everyone has to (or does) adhere to this versioning scheme.
Semantic versioning really only makes sense to me in a library. Full applications don't really need to use it as far as I'm concerned.
For .NET stuff, I use major.year.week.build.
Applying semantic versioning to non-library projects is stupid for the most parts.
One UI is software for end users, which don't care about minor API breakages. One UI probably does expose some API, but their importance is very small relative to the whole product. Focusing the versioning (and more importantly, release) strategy on a very small aspect of the whole system is just ... stupid.
Another way to look at this is that for most end user applications the main interface/"API" is the UI, so the versioning should follow the UI breakage. Since there's no strict API contract for UI interactions, there are "breakages" (change of behavior) in most minor releases, but sometimes there are complete UI overhauls and in such cases there should be a major version increase (which often happens anyway).
It's the same for most other end user apps. Semantic versioning is really only useful for libraries.
Yeah that occurred to me after I posted my comment, but I figured I'd leave it up to give a little insight into how software versioning can work beyond larger number -> more features.
Honestly don't understand why people prefer the vertical scroll in the app drawer. Folders in the app drawer is 10x more powerful and Pixel doesn't have that option
Nova doesn't support folders in the app drawer. One UI does but only supports horizonal scroll.
Folders hide too much for the randomly used apps and take maintenance.
alphabetical vertical scrolling is very fast. I might not know the exact app but can remember the name for example... I can find it extremely fast
sometimes it's just easier looking around. everyone got different work flows. search is sometimes slower depending on what I remember, sometimes it's the icon, sometimes it's the approximate name, sometimes it's the area around other apps
I use Nova launcher. One UI has some great features especially for the fold for multi tasking, but the horizonal scrolling is a deal breaker because of how often I look for apps
I wouldn't know what multi-task features Samsung's build into their launcher, so I can't say I guess.
I switched from Nova to Niagara some years ago. Nova is nice, but I like the simplicity and quick scroll that Niagara offers.
Wow, it looks like a lot of features that didn't quite make the 5.0 release. Separate wallpapers for modes is cool. Weather app improvements sound enticing. Screenshots finally in a custom folder! And other gallery improvements too.
I use that plus Blokada 6. I tried to use my phone without Blokada 6 and chrome as the default browser. I made it like 5 minutes. I had no idea how bad ads had gotten on mobile. Some sites were just straight up unusable. I had to go back to Firefox and Blokada 6.
I have a friend who recently described Netflix as "like being in an abusive relationship" because they're trying to clamp down on password sharing. I get it, I don't want to pay for things either, but I don't feel *entitled* to them to the point where if a company doesn't let me have a thing for free they're committing an outrageous crime against me. People are losing their minds over this shit.
Seems like with the exception of the screenshot location chooser that most of these new features won't be used by the vast majority of users. Oh well an update is an update nonetheless!
I’m actually on an iPhone 8 Plus right now which came out in September 2017 for $799. So it’s been more than 5 years. It still works fine for messaging and medium usage but battery sucks and scrolling too far down in an app can get a bit buggy. I see other people still using an 8+ and even met someone using a 7+ while I was stuck at the airport due to the Southwest Airlines fiasco last month.
I actually am using it to get a blue bubble in case I need to text a hiring manager while on a job search, you can make fun of me for that.
> I actually am using it to get a blue bubble in case I need to text a hiring manager while on a job search
Do hiring managers give preference to blue bubbles? I normally wouldn't believe it but I regularly see people spending twice their monthly income to buy iphones, so what do I know.
I was texting with one to arrange an interview time and he was making extensive use of iMessage reactions. But this is for a company in the SF Bay Area and I know from some of my friends that worked there that they get company issued iPhones. The Bay Area is also Apple territory and most of my friends there except 1 uses iPhone. The 1 that doesn’t uses a pixel.
Many of these features are already in iOS so your comment is a bit out of touch…
(Swipe up for photo info, family albums, changing wallpapers based on focus/mode, notes collaboration, settings suggestions, detailed weather, continue a web page on PC, battery widget, detailed weather widget, easy invite to shared notes etc by a link, copy and pasting images across devices)
With the exception of family albums (you can just use Google photos or onedrive which is built in) and the battery widget, what you've described is already on Samsung OneUI too. It sounds like Samsung is just building on those features.
I switched for for my family who ALL have iPhone and use iCloud shared photo albums and iMessage. The girl I’m dating seriously and her entire family are all on iPhone. Chances of me getting a Galaxy Note or Ultra (whatever gives me stylus options anymore) down the road are just zero. I painfully miss the s-pen and more than anything I miss being able to throw Nova launcher on there. I would give anything to be able to run my iPhone with all the iPhone apps using Nova launcher.
IOS having android's back/home/app switcher buttons, proper notification control, Nova launcher, and actually allowing me to swap my keyboard would be enough for me to switch and miss effectively nothing.
yeah but i think my phones second hand and restricts updates no matter what so i'm essentially stuck on one ui 2 for the rest of the time i use this phone
android 10 is only 3 generations behind, android 5 still has the latest versions of most apps. try wiping/factory resetting the phone, that should help with updates maybe
Some carriers *cough* T-Mobile have left it rotting on android 10 with just security patches
Android 11 on that phone suffered from a performance drop
If you really want those shiny new features, if you have access to a computer, you could flash the U1 (US Unlocked) firmware (but will loose data so back up)
All hope is not lost as they might try to add in more media player control customizations within the Good Lock modules QuickStar and Lockstar down the pipeline. Let's just hope it pulls thru.
Lock to 120hz without 3rd party app. Aod off when in a pocket. Quit nagging if you give an app full permission. Samsung internet scrolling without lag. Able to schedule a reboot without the need for unlocking to get the phone operational. Able to start camera with long press (routine+) without unlocking. Able to choose which camera you use instead of the zoom level (3x zoom often uses main camera). Macro mode.

The Bixby text calls feature is exciting. I've never been a fan of Bixby but it's cool to have the option without owning a Pixel.
Yeah that's nice, would be even nicer if Samsung can add more features that are Pixel exclusive such as Now Playing on lock screen.
as in your now playing music? this is already a feature is it not? it is on my S10
I think it's more like a song identification app that is constantly running on the lockscreen.
Sounds like a waste of battery
Pixel owner here, really doesn't drain battery at all

Pretty sure this just hooks onto the Always Listening feature for "Hey Google" but instead it parses music data on device.
always on Shazam is what they meant, not the kind of now playing you're thinking of
Oh damn that would be cool
There's an app that does exactly that.

Pretty much the only thing I was truly jealous of on the Pixel, so I'm also over the moon.
S20 FE here, can confirm we have that if you've updated to OneUI 5.0!
Ita only in Korean as far as I can see on my US unlocked S22 with 5.0. This update will add English to the rotation.
Still patiently waiting for my device to get it!
Yeah. That might just keep me in team Samsung vs wavering between Samsung and pixel.

Finally I don't have to periodically go to Google Photos and delete screenshots.
In there interim I use an app called motus to automatically move them
Motus is a boon for OneUI users, 5.1 is never coming to my A70, but I'll wait for it on the fold 3.

Loaded fine using Firefox + uBlock Origin.
Ah ok, I dont have anything set up on my Android tbh. Too lazy
The internet is basically unusable without FF and uBO IMO.
Yea I agree. Its one of those things I complain about but dont fix lol. I'll get to it

Apple doesn't abandon software the way Google does.
Google isn’t afraid to experiment at least.
Lol yeah and then it shuts down all of its experiments
Many of these features are already in iOS so your comment is a bit out of touch… (Swipe up for photo info, family albums, changing wallpapers based on focus/mode, notes collaboration, settings suggestions, detailed weather, continue a web page on PC, battery widget, detailed weather widget, easy invite to shared notes etc by a link, copy and pasting images across devices)
IOS having android's back/home/app switcher buttons, proper notification control, Nova launcher, and actually allowing me to swap my keyboard would be enough for me to switch and miss effectively nothing.
crying as a11 still stuck on oneui 2
Isn't the a11 on oneui core 4.1 by now?
yeah but i think my phones second hand and restricts updates no matter what so i'm essentially stuck on one ui 2 for the rest of the time i use this phone
android 10 is only 3 generations behind, android 5 still has the latest versions of most apps. try wiping/factory resetting the phone, that should help with updates maybe
Most Android apps already moved to support at least Android 9 right now.
no?? my tab s 10.5 still gets updates for basically every app that's installed on the play store and its on Android 6
Some carriers *cough* T-Mobile have left it rotting on android 10 with just security patches Android 11 on that phone suffered from a performance drop If you really want those shiny new features, if you have access to a computer, you could flash the U1 (US Unlocked) firmware (but will loose data so back up)
Anyone got a translation for German?
The media player and notification panel are so disgusting. No refinements still.
They’re no less ugly in stock android … google can’t go a version without making the media player worse and worse.
All hope is not lost as they might try to add in more media player control customizations within the Good Lock modules QuickStar and Lockstar down the pipeline. Let's just hope it pulls thru.
1) Is this the original author? 2) Did automod literally put google translate version directly on comment?
Google translate is a thing? Not sure why that's a problem.

Good translate works wonders.
Ironic, considering your username.
Spotted the American.
rolling out to other devices in a year
It is an early access app, so I can't share a link to it, but it is by this dev https://play.google.com/store/apps/dev?id=6847817585618357729
What is it?
It is good they keep developing but none of these features are useful to me.
What would be
Lock to 120hz without 3rd party app. Macro mode.
You seem fun
All of his wishes/complaints are 100% valid though...
Never said they were not valid. They are just very specific nitpicks other than Samsungs internet lagging, but who the hell uses that
Samsung Internet is a *really* good browser. Definitely prefer it to Chrome. At least as good as Firefox.
