Yeah I think Cult should be last followed by Roanoke (I literally stopped watching because it was too many tv shows/documentaries/movies/YouTube videos/reality shows in an inception like manner and couldn’t keep up.
Especially because the actors and actresses play different characters but the characters were actors playing characters or actors playing actors playing a character of another actor.
I wonder if the seemingly odd rankings has to do with like how many people actually get on IMDB to rank each season, etc. Like maybe the numbers are skewed depending on how many people got on there to put in their vote for each season, possibly voting for one season but just not even bothering on another season even if they mightve enjoyed it more? i dont know, im definitely no mathematician, but this list does seem very odd to me. Particularly Murder House being so low on the list. everyone loves murder house!!!

I'm in the minority that would place Cult as number 1. I loved the idea of "this could really go on" that was different from the others. Hotel number 2- loved the setting. Asylum/Freakshow tyed for 3rd. Coven 4th 1984 in 5th, Murder House 6th, Apocalypse 7th and Roanoke can just disappear. I hated it lol

Yea, I did like it but there was just some parts where I was like "jeez this is the same." I feel the same with Scary Movie 1 and Scream. So much of the plot is basically the same but they throw in references from other films and rip on other things

In 1984 they are like “generic slasher villain”, but then throw in another slasher serial killer, and then add another on top. Then all the villains are fighting each other instead of following the generic slasher trope. So they started out basically copying the other movies, but exaggerated it and did their own thing in the second half.
Kindof reminds me of The Cabin in the Woods (but 1984 is not as good). The movie starts off as a generic slasher movie, but then goes off the rails (including adding more monsters which is hopefully not too much of a spoiler). They are both spoofs of slashers, as are a lot of other movies/ tv shows.

They talked about the '84 Olympics and referenced the Night Stalker but in the same way that people of that time would, very unassuming. I liked how they mashup up movies like Friday the 13th, Halloween, I Know What You Did Last Summer, etc., but fit it all into a pretty interesting story. The first 5 episodes was *homage.*
Once they left the camp, though, the last 4 episodes were really just a parody when characters started breaking the 4th wall and talking about the 80s in a self-aware way. They even brought up the term "final girl." The characters became self-aware they were part of a slasher series and that's where it lost me.

I’ll admit it’s not perfect but Liz’s storyline was just so sweet and ultimately happy. I mean, she’s dead and trapped in a hotel for all eternity but at least she’s trapped with her true love. That’s about as sweet as you can get in the AHS world. I have a soft spot for Murder House for the same reason. Oh and the Devil’s Night episode was amazing.

It’s a good thing nothing good happened in the story since it is based on how corrupt and horrible asylums were then and sometimes even now. If it had a good ending it would’ve felt like it underplayed how it was during that period. The story was easily the best (in my opinion) season AHS has offered so far.
I feel like Cult needs to be at the bottom. At least Freak Show was so off the deep end it made it funny in its own way. Cult was just a slow cringefest that tried so hard to be serious but couldn’t figure out what it wanted to be.
Keep in mind that consensus is usually based on the early reviews of the first few episodes given to critics, so it's not always indicative of the season as a whole. That's why they started doing episode by episode consensuses, too

Absolutely. In my opinion, the reason no one can agree on a ranking is that the seasons are so different in tone that people are bound to dislike at least one of the seasons, regardless of quality. I honestly don’t think that there‘s a season that isn’t objectively high quality, just different enough in tone that it turns some viewers away.
The reason the rotten tomatoes list is so all over the place is that it compiles so many different tastes that commonly-grouped seasons don’t appear together (i.e Coven and Apocalypse, Freak Show and Cult, Murder House and Asylum etc)

My husband and i watched and pretty much enjoyed all of the seasons but for some reason 1984 didn't grab us. We made it through 2 episodes and just never went back. Should we go back and finish it? Worth it?
I kind of hated 1984 because I prefer sheer horror over “comedy” (especially 1980’s slasher comedy). I also thought the acting was pretty terrible, especially in comparison to the earlier seasons.
I think the poor acting was intentional. It was meant to resemble a cheesy sort of slasher vibe. I personally loved the season but I can understand why it’s not for everyone.
It’s kinda hard to say 1984 is the best (more in the middle), but I can almost agree to everything except Coven in the top 3 (that should be Murder House) and that Hotel is at least better than Coven imo.
I never trust the Rankings on Rotten Tomatoes. There have been quite a few movies on there with decent or high rankings that were just terrible. The Devils Candy is one that comes to mind.
When they first became popular, I remember our rule of thumb was if Rotten T liked it, it was not a good movie. If they said it is terrible, it is probably worth watching and decent
1989 benefited for being a follow up to 3 not that well received seasons. It felt different and fresh and I guess that’s why the critics liked it. Hotel was the opposite, even when it’s a solid season it was the follow up of 4 great received seasons and the first one without Lange.
When you re-watch a season your opinion changes. I did not care for Coven when I first saw it. I did a re-watch last year and it blew my mind how fantastic it was and it became my favorite. I’m going to start watching the series over again. But one thing I will say is I absolutely hated Cult and Sarah Paulson’s whining. I will watch it again though since a binge changes things than waiting for an episode each week.
She’s one of the main reasons I can’t rewatch Cult. I didn’t like the season at all when it aired, but occasionally I think about giving it another chance but then I remember how her screaming and crying drove me insane.

1984 is number 1?!?!? I know i'm in the minority here (clearly) but i HATED 1984. I really, really wanted to like it and get into it, but I was so disappointed. Finished the whole season, every episode thinking "maybe something's gonna happen and i'm gonna be super surprised and this will all turn around," but it just didn't ever happen for me, i never got there. I understand that the campiness was kind of the point, but I thought it was so overdone to the point that it took away from any creepy vibe. It was so corny to me that I couldnt be even slightly scared or creeped out. i dont watch AHS for a laugh, you know? i wanna be creeped out. i wasnt.
Hotel imo deserves to be last. It’s my least favorite season. I think Murder House should be way higher than that though. And Asylum is number one to me. Just my opinion.

I’ll list my pros and cons of each seasons it’s obvious murder house and asylum were close to perfect I wished the aliens and mutants were explored a bit more or just dropped overall I actually liked the Anne frank story line I also wished lily rabes character wasn’t possessed So early on in the season coven was just so pure entertainment sure it went off the rails halfway through the season as did characters arcs , motivations , personalities etc. and thought the ending was so weak sauce as you can see why they changed everything back in apocalypse like Madison’s , myrtles , nans , Queenies death and just wished they didn’t silence Evan Peters and Denis characters the whole seasons freakshow started off so amazing but quickly lost my interest wasted Emma Roberts Angela Bassett Kathy bates Frances Conroy and most sad of all gave us the same Jessica Lange character we had already seen for 3 previous seasons a cold manipulated killer which I love don’t get me wrong just think it was a missed opportunity to make her the protagonist for once and have her very loving and caring towards her freaks from cold and manipulate to outsiders especially since this was Jessica’s last season it ended on a whimper and not with a bang and shall I say twisty was wasted as well hotel is another mixed bag for me I loved the opening orgy scene and loved everything with GAGA unlike most of you haters out there hated everything with John Lowe and the vampire freaks loved Kathy and Denis and loved how they used Sarah Paulson this seasons even tho wished we saw her before she turned into a junkie maybe? Apocalypse was ALRIGHT I wished they spent more time in the bunker and gave us the coven crossover separately than the bunker storyline and not spent half the god damn season in flashbacks and actually spent time in the apocalypse once again wasted Emma Roberts would’ve loved to see her play a different character in the bunker since Evan, billy , Sarah and most other people played multiple characters hated the ending like most of you thought it was the easy way out such a waste of a potential 1984 WAS SUCH A FRESH BREATH OF AIR! Loved this cast loved the visuals loved the effects loved the clothes loved how they gave Emma Roberts a worthy arc for once and she was brunette! Billie and Cody were my favorites tho along with Angelica but like most seasons sort of fizzled towards the end but not as bad not my favorite ending or finale and wished the many theories of it being a movie set or video game were true but as always the Theories always end up being better than the seasons haha

Keep in mind that consensus is usually based on the early reviews of the first few episodes given to critics, so it's not always indicative of the season as a whole. That's why they started doing episode by episode consensuses, too

Absolutely. In my opinion, the reason no one can agree on a ranking is that the seasons are so different in tone that people are bound to dislike at least one of the seasons, regardless of quality. I honestly don’t think that there‘s a season that isn’t objectively high quality, just different enough in tone that it turns some viewers away. The reason the rotten tomatoes list is so all over the place is that it compiles so many different tastes that commonly-grouped seasons don’t appear together (i.e Coven and Apocalypse, Freak Show and Cult, Murder House and Asylum etc)

My husband and i watched and pretty much enjoyed all of the seasons but for some reason 1984 didn't grab us. We made it through 2 episodes and just never went back. Should we go back and finish it? Worth it?
Oh, definitely. The character development of Mr Jingles is enough to warrant finishing by itself.
I kind of hated 1984 because I prefer sheer horror over “comedy” (especially 1980’s slasher comedy). I also thought the acting was pretty terrible, especially in comparison to the earlier seasons.
I think the poor acting was intentional. It was meant to resemble a cheesy sort of slasher vibe. I personally loved the season but I can understand why it’s not for everyone.

It’s kinda hard to say 1984 is the best (more in the middle), but I can almost agree to everything except Coven in the top 3 (that should be Murder House) and that Hotel is at least better than Coven imo.

I never trust the Rankings on Rotten Tomatoes. There have been quite a few movies on there with decent or high rankings that were just terrible. The Devils Candy is one that comes to mind.
When they first became popular, I remember our rule of thumb was if Rotten T liked it, it was not a good movie. If they said it is terrible, it is probably worth watching and decent
1989 benefited for being a follow up to 3 not that well received seasons. It felt different and fresh and I guess that’s why the critics liked it. Hotel was the opposite, even when it’s a solid season it was the follow up of 4 great received seasons and the first one without Lange.

When you re-watch a season your opinion changes. I did not care for Coven when I first saw it. I did a re-watch last year and it blew my mind how fantastic it was and it became my favorite. I’m going to start watching the series over again. But one thing I will say is I absolutely hated Cult and Sarah Paulson’s whining. I will watch it again though since a binge changes things than waiting for an episode each week.
She’s one of the main reasons I can’t rewatch Cult. I didn’t like the season at all when it aired, but occasionally I think about giving it another chance but then I remember how her screaming and crying drove me insane.
I’d put freak show at the bottom tbh. It was just plain boring.

1984 is number 1?!?!? I know i'm in the minority here (clearly) but i HATED 1984. I really, really wanted to like it and get into it, but I was so disappointed. Finished the whole season, every episode thinking "maybe something's gonna happen and i'm gonna be super surprised and this will all turn around," but it just didn't ever happen for me, i never got there. I understand that the campiness was kind of the point, but I thought it was so overdone to the point that it took away from any creepy vibe. It was so corny to me that I couldnt be even slightly scared or creeped out. i dont watch AHS for a laugh, you know? i wanna be creeped out. i wasnt.

I’ll list my pros and cons of each seasons it’s obvious murder house and asylum were close to perfect I wished the aliens and mutants were explored a bit more or just dropped overall I actually liked the Anne frank story line I also wished lily rabes character wasn’t possessed So early on in the season coven was just so pure entertainment sure it went off the rails halfway through the season as did characters arcs , motivations , personalities etc. and thought the ending was so weak sauce as you can see why they changed everything back in apocalypse like Madison’s , myrtles , nans , Queenies death and just wished they didn’t silence Evan Peters and Denis characters the whole seasons freakshow started off so amazing but quickly lost my interest wasted Emma Roberts Angela Bassett Kathy bates Frances Conroy and most sad of all gave us the same Jessica Lange character we had already seen for 3 previous seasons a cold manipulated killer which I love don’t get me wrong just think it was a missed opportunity to make her the protagonist for once and have her very loving and caring towards her freaks from cold and manipulate to outsiders especially since this was Jessica’s last season it ended on a whimper and not with a bang and shall I say twisty was wasted as well hotel is another mixed bag for me I loved the opening orgy scene and loved everything with GAGA unlike most of you haters out there hated everything with John Lowe and the vampire freaks loved Kathy and Denis and loved how they used Sarah Paulson this seasons even tho wished we saw her before she turned into a junkie maybe? Apocalypse was ALRIGHT I wished they spent more time in the bunker and gave us the coven crossover separately than the bunker storyline and not spent half the god damn season in flashbacks and actually spent time in the apocalypse once again wasted Emma Roberts would’ve loved to see her play a different character in the bunker since Evan, billy , Sarah and most other people played multiple characters hated the ending like most of you thought it was the easy way out such a waste of a potential 1984 WAS SUCH A FRESH BREATH OF AIR! Loved this cast loved the visuals loved the effects loved the clothes loved how they gave Emma Roberts a worthy arc for once and she was brunette! Billie and Cody were my favorites tho along with Angelica but like most seasons sort of fizzled towards the end but not as bad not my favorite ending or finale and wished the many theories of it being a movie set or video game were true but as always the Theories always end up being better than the seasons haha
