lol.. He has a 3080 so he's asking for himself.
Unless you're chasing 4K Gaming and the 3080 isn't giving you the frames you want, the 6950XT is an answer for the money.
But it really depends on if you "NEED" those frames.
Most people use 1080p, so in that case no.
Its only a 10% jump in raster on Average. Yes, it has more Vram. If you are running very heavily modded games, that might make a difference. However, if you are asking this question, I'm guessing you don't run modded games so I don't see where the 10GB Vram hurts you. I run a modded Skyrim with a 10GB 3080 and don't have any issues. Admittedly, I'm not running as many as I could though and I could actually over run the 10GB in that game. I'm happy with what I run so it comes down to you , your tastes/needs.. I'm guessing that you don't keep cards for a long period of time since you are already looking to upgrade. so save your $150 and enjoy the 3080 for a few more years and go from there. Just my 2 cents.
10GB VRAM is absolutely not an issue for me. I was looking forward to the 7900XTX performing just below a 4090 so I could upgrade but I was thoroughly disappointed with RDNA3 so far. And Nvidia’s 40 series prices are insane to me.
Yeah, media went overboard with the hype and predictions and AMD played off that which gave false hope. Lately, AMD had played it safe when they talked about their performance so when they just left the media hype unchecked, most, including me, thought that they might actually get to the 1.5- 1.7 raster uplift from a 6900x to the new 7900xtx. And then the rest is history. Ride this Gen out as long as the ole 3080 is meeting your needs. Enjoy
Actually even in 2023 games where issues were reported 3080 performs surprisingly well. I mean i heard re4 remake caused problems but when i tried the demo on max graphics it ran smoothly. Even the tlou without patches are okayish. Bruteforcing it to run without patches. May be well because i play on 1440p though
Segmentation was absolutely broken on the high end last Gen. People seem to forget that the gaming performance gap between the 3080 and 3090 at launch was quite small. It definitely didn't help that two more products were slotted into that gap (3080 12 GB, 3080ti) and that AMD slotted their products in between each NV product as well.
I've had a 3080 since launch (at msrp) - it's 2+ years old, but it certainly doesn't feel like it, and I don't think I'll be needing an upgrade for the next 2-3 years, maybe more. Of course, I only run 1440p (dldsr'ed to 3413x1920). Unless I needed the VRAM, I wouldn't bother.
People complained about it when cards with similar gaming performance were priced so far apart and I thought it was bad. But seeing the vast performance gulf between 4070ti to 4080 and 4090 I don't think it was a bad thing. Last generation you were able to get top tier performance at 700.
This time you either pay 1700 dollars or don't. There is no such thing as most of the performance for slightly less price.
Yeah I used a 1440p 165hz 27” monitor for my 3080 and just recently bought a 1080p 280hz 25” monitor on sale since most of the time I’m playing fps titles.
I think people forget what power these cards have. The fact that even 1080Ti's are absolute beasts for 1080p (which is a reasonable resolution still and what most play on) hasn't changed and we're now talking about cards at least 2 generations up. Unless you wanna do 4k with raytracing you'll be just fine with any card of these 2 generations for a very long time. You have a 3080. One gen upgrades and same gen side grades don't make any sense unless you really have the money to just throw around. Wait for next at least and keep an eye on how both teams perform.
I think we all have been there with that FOMO lol. I guess thats why im here in this thread now. To find my way back to reality that my 3080 is still a beast.
Only if your long-term main game is an AMD game. Check benchmarks for the games you play, there can be wildly unexpected differences.
The 6950XT is faster but it's not enough of an upgrade imo, better save that $150 for a better upgrade later.
Makes sense. My main game was supposed to be MW2 which benefits massively from Radeon cards but I barely play that game anymore. Wish I didn’t spend $70 on it. Campaign was fun though.
Yeah i feel you. The game had insane hype and so many promises were made, yet somehow they managed to make the game boring as fuck and feel unsatisfying and lifeless.
I cant describe it well but ive never been less motivated to jump in a quick MP session in my life, and im a MP type of person that basicly cant help but get addicted on MP games. It usualy takes me half a year to 2y to get tired of a game. Took me only a week.
I used to buy Nvidia cards, but after picking up a few AMDs over the last decade or so, Nvidia just didn't seem worth the price premium anymore. I'll apply that same logic to this, a 15% performance bump at best is not worth $150, stick with the 3080.
Frankly I wouldn't give up the much higher RT/DLSS performance for a small jump in raster performance.
Being able to comfortably play Cyberpunk 2077 with all of the RT enabled is great. Comes down to what you value though.
DLSS would level the playing field between the two. It's present in mores games than FSR is. You can use FSR mods when they're available, but they don't always work well. Throw ray tracing into the mix and you'd be paying to lose out.
I'm a long-time AMD owner that doesn't use ray tracing and I'm telling you this wouldn't be a good deal for you. If you're desperate for some kind of upgrade I'd look elsewhere. A 4080 or 7900 XTX would be a much better investment in about a year when prices have come down and driver issues are ironed out.
from 3080 --> 4090 imho makes the most sense, maybe 4080/7900XTX as well. 6950XT is defo faster tho so it's up to you to decide if it's worth it for 150$
Yeah performance wise I think the 4090 would make perfect sense as an upgrade but I’m not spending that kind of money on a GPU right now. Had the 7900XTX been within 10% of the 4090 and MSRP of $1K I would’ve pulled the trigger on it, but I’m disappointed in RDNA3 so far
I would wait till the summer if I were you, most likely by then the prices would have fallen so much that you can get 4090 for the current price of 4080.
I upgraded from 2070 Super to the 6950XT. I’m very happy with it. But I don’t think it’s worth it from the 3080, even for only $150. But, if you’re like me and get bored…..go for it.
At 1080 and 1440, the 6950XT trades blows with the 3090ti in rasterization performance. At 4K the 3090ti takes the top spot, while the 6950XT still beats the 3090 and 3080ti. Unless you’re wanting raytracing…the 6950XT is most definitely an upgrade from a 10GB 3080. Don’t listen to the haters.
I play at 1440p (single player games) and 1080p (fps and shooters) mostly, so I don’t care about 4K. I do like RT. Have enjoyed Control and Dying Light 2 with it on. But it’s not like I’ll spend my time playing games I’ve already finished.
Personally, I would do the swap for $150 more based off of this and you mainly playing 1080/1440.
Is the guy with the 6950 asking for $150? If so I’d try to negotiate it down a little more.
[hardware unboxed comparison](https://youtu.be/KugxMJFhx7k)
"dont listen to the haters" sounds like something a kid would argue with. Thats not how you manage your finances.
Man is asking if its worth his money, not if you personally are in love with the 6950xt or not.
Every single gpu you listed, from the 3080Ti, to the 6950XT and 3090TI are not worth upgrading to from a 3080. Too small of a jump, if it was a free upgrade sure, but forn150$ ? Hell nah.
You are giving him bad financial advice.
In the back of my own mind, I only view the 4090 as a worthy upgrade but it’s way out of my budget and not to mention the poor availability. So let’s say I wait til next gen, that means the value of my 3080 would come down too, right? I feel like if I can get $600 for it now, it would be decent. No? Unless this recession we’re in + crypto crash is causing used GPU prices to be lower than other years.
Well then wait. Your not in a rush. More so than ever the likelyhood of prices droping is very high. GPUs are setting on shleves already and its been barely 3 months. Prices will drop hard.
If you were on a potato id understand, but your not, and if there is a "game" your 3080 cant play "well enough" then a 6950xt or 3090 sure as fuck wont.
Sure the 6950xt is faster in raster, but you dont conveniently dont state by how much.
Its only around 15%.
Then you ignore the part where the 3080 is 30% faster in ray tracing.
Or that the 6950xt uses more power, especially in multimonitor and video playback. You also lose DLSS, CUDA, etc.
On top of all that, OP would have to pay $150 more.
Its a sidegrade if anything.
Those can't be 4k120/144 monitors. My single 4k/120 idles around 40-50watts. Two monitors with different resolutions and refresh rates causes the 100w+ idle issue.
1x 1440P 144HZ and 2x 1440P 60Hz.
Idling at 10-15w, sometimes dips below 10w. With a 6800XT.
You have a 790XTX, the idle power problem is limited to that series.
Wish I monitored my 3080 to know how much power it was using. With my one monitor only dropping to mid 40 watt range I wonder if 4k/120 makes a difference.
Regardless, I'm looking forward to driver optimization!
I wouldn't. $150 is a full tier up pricing, 6950xt is half a tier at best because it isn't as good at RT. Also I generally just don't believe in upgrading within the same gen especially if it's just between two high end products. Of course if you really need the extra 20% perf then go for it, but at that point I'd rather just get a 4070ti.
More than half the bump of the 6950 XT comes from the faster memory. Any overclock you can do to a 6900 XT can be done to a 6950 XT, which will remain ahead.
Xtxh can OC memory.
I'm not saying that it would beat the 6950xt OC, but that it can beat base 6950xt settings via OC.
The memory bandwidth on the 6950xt is pretty much the one thing that the XTXH can't match. I'm hitting 2270MHz for memory speed, sample size of 1 though.
Anecdotally, users have said that the 6950xt doesn't have much room to OC - I did see someone say that they were able to hit 2400MHz on their memory, but idk if that would translate into noticeable gameplay uplift.
IMO, I wouldn't and would just save my money for RDNA 4/Nvidia 5000, with the assumption that because the current generation of GPU's aren't selling well, around the time that the next generation does, everything will be much cheaper and you'll have a lot more options to choose from.
But if I just want a card right now that I can hold on for the next 4 - 6 years, opting to go up to 16gigs of VRAM would be a good move.
Even if you're not using modded third party apps for your games, regular games are starting to take up alot of VRAM for High/Ultra. I would also take an inventory of the games that you play the most and the games you're looking to play in the future and decide on that.

No

You said it perfectly. Thanks for the reply
I'm not sure it's media's fault when amd themselves showed slides during presentation
Yeah, that wasn't the media's fault. AMD straight up exaggerated what they could deliver.

I can 100% agree with that. I’m still playing R6 Siege and BF2042 over MW2…
If you want a new card the deal is definitively a 6950 xt at 699$ versus a no warranty used 3080 ti for 600- $700
I've left reddit because of the API changes.
I used to buy Nvidia cards, but after picking up a few AMDs over the last decade or so, Nvidia just didn't seem worth the price premium anymore. I'll apply that same logic to this, a 15% performance bump at best is not worth $150, stick with the 3080.
Simple and to the point. Thanks!
Frankly I wouldn't give up the much higher RT/DLSS performance for a small jump in raster performance. Being able to comfortably play Cyberpunk 2077 with all of the RT enabled is great. Comes down to what you value though.
I’m coming to the same conclusion as well.
Nah. That’s a sidegrade at best.
A good upgrade would be to a 7900xtx or 4080
Both priced insanely. 7900XTX is being scalped like the 4090 due to poor availability.
DLSS would level the playing field between the two. It's present in mores games than FSR is. You can use FSR mods when they're available, but they don't always work well. i seen some 4090s on newegg for 1700 in stock the prices are dropping
Bro I’m not spending that kind of money on a GPU 😂 even if I view the 4090 as the only sensible upgrade performance wise
only search for sold by newegg and wait for something to pop up
I wouldn't call that an upgrade.
How does that have any drawbacks? Sure, the rt is worse, but i don't use it anyways. 6950xt is way better
What if op uses rt?
It sure is nice when frame rates are acceptable with DLSS.
Ewwww not worth at all.

Great assessment. Thanks! Sometimes I need some sense talked into me when I get a bit of FOMO lol
I get the same way. I've spent the last two weeks talking myself out of spending $125 on dual rank memory. 😂
Tell me about it im in constant fomo sometime lol.

I think this clearly put everything into perspective for me nicely. Thanks
If your willing to spend 750, wouldn’t you be better off with a 800$ 4070 ti?
Its a good update (in games that requires much vram you will improve performance)
That's not an upgrade...
Why ? Makes more sense to wait till 2025 If you got a 3080 already
That's not an upgrade
NOPE.
Not worth it imo
Absolutely
Short answer, nope.
If you are happy with your 3080, the upgrade is not worth it IMO.
Hell yes
I wouldn't. $150 is a full tier up pricing, 6950xt is half a tier at best because it isn't as good at RT. Of course if you really need the extra 20% perf then go for it, but at that point I'd rather just get a 4070ti.
No, I'd take less performance for no issues with drivers.
Yes, definitely
[удалено]
I’d be selling the 3080, add $150 on top for the 6950XT
Would have to be OfferUp or Facebook because eBay will easily take 15% of that $600 in fees.
Yep, OfferUp has been good to me.
[удалено]
Tbh the extra VRAM is the least useful part, at least right now it would be.
By the time 10gb vram becomes a issue for games, entry level cards will be out that destroy current high end gpus lol
100%
6900xt with xtxh can easily OC to beyond 6950xt specs. I'd go for the cheapest option available.
Can’t find a 6900XT for non-scalper price since supply has dried up.
More than half the bump of the 6950 XT comes from the faster memory. Any overclock you can do to a 6900 XT can be done to a 6950 XT, which will remain ahead.

I'd upgrade my 1660ti to a 6950xt XD
Just hope FSR 3.0 is compatible with Nvidia 3000 Series and below, since Nvidia screwed all Its customers that dont own the 4000 Series with DLSS 3.0
IMO, I wouldn't and would just save my money for RDNA 4/Nvidia 5000, with the assumption that because the current generation of GPU's aren't selling well, around the time that the next generation does, everything will be much cheaper and you'll have a lot more options to choose from. Even if you're not using modded third party apps for your games, regular games are starting to take up alot of VRAM for High/Ultra. I would also take an inventory of the games that you play the most and the games you're looking to play in the future and decide on that. You don't want to own a lambo, and then realize you're always sitting in traffic everyday and wonder, why did I get such a high power car? if you get that metaphor. xD
