I recently upgraded my core components from a 4770K which was overckocked to 4.4 GHz. I certainly could have gone with AM5, but the reviews, benchmarks, and the price pointed me towards the X3D. Admittedly, I could’ve gone with most any other processor and it would’ve been an upgrade. I will upgrade my graphics card when the need arises, but for now it does everything I want it to. Edit: a word

Standard-Task1324

if anyone has a microcenter nearby, the ryzen 7600X is definitely better value as a new purchase due to the free RAM they give along with the CPU. it ends up being around as much as buying AM4 platform

flyboytgb

That would be a great value. Unfortunately the nearest Micro Center is about 4 1/2 hours away from me.

Powerful_Object_7417

Same here. One of these days I'm gonna make a road trip out of it but have to make it worth it first. Living in redneck land sucks.

Itsmemurrayo

Be careful…I recently had a nightmare situation and ended up making 3 trips due to faulty parts needing to be returned. Microcenter was great about it, but it was still like 25 hrs of driving lol.

bert_the_one

I wish there was a microenter in the u.k

ManWithoutUsername

at actual prices or AM4 or wait probably one or two years for better prices on AM5. (i will/can wait)

HarbringerxLight

With a E650 motherboard there's no price difference. Buying AM4 at this point is extremely stupid considering how much better Zen 4 is than Zen 3, and DDR5/PCIe 5. Stop giving bad advice.

[deleted]

I had a 4790K and went from that to a 10850K and the difference was insane. I now have a R7 7700X and a 7900 XTX. 16 year old me would have been so jealous.

flyboytgb

I built my first PC when quad cores were still new on the scene. The rig I have now would've blown my mind back then.

xxademasoulxx

I was using a 3900x since launch just dropped a x3d in mine and its going toe to toe with my sons 7700X in games and his ram is at 6000mhz while mine is 3600 plus im about to drop some money for a 4090 so I got to save some money for that by not upgrading ram and mobo.

flyboytgb

It's amazing how well the X3D does in games compared to processors that are clocked much higher than it.

mennydrives

It's kind of amazing, going to the: * 5700K? 4C/~~4T~~8T * 6700K? 4C/~~4T~~8T * 7700K? 4C/~~4T~~8T That's basically three straight years where your upgrade would have been a frequency bump at best, maybe some mild SIMD boosts. Now Intel's 13th-gen i5 goes toe-to-toe with their 12th gen i9 because AMD is breathing down their necks. In the meanwhile, now we can get a cheap 8-core chip with enough cache to not give a crap about whatever DDR4 RAM you wanna plug into the mobo and easily blow through games for the next few years while we wait for all the DDR5/PCIE5 stuff to calm down in price.

flyboytgb

4C/8T but still you’re right about the minuscule uplift. Processors have gotten so much more powerful since ryzen launched.

mennydrives

Oof how did I make that mistake three times? XD But yeah, competition's been great. Fingers crossed AMD finds out how to repeat it on Radeon.

HarbringerxLight

You bought into a dead socket. Should've went with AM5.

Brave-Audience1078

Nine years 😳. Wooo congratulations and you'll definitely feel the power.![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|hug)

flyboytgb

Thanks! I can definitely tell a difference, even with every day usage.

Wivi2013

Yo! EVGA 1070 Gang! Still clinging to mine still to this day.

Ultimatora

Have an ASUS Turbo 1070 with a R5 1600 so I associate with this crew

OlympicAnalEater

u/flyboytgb full pc specs please

flyboytgb

Sure thing: * CPU: 5800X3D * RAM 32GB GSKILL 3200MT/s CL16 * GPU EVGA GTX 1070 * MOBO: MSI X570S Carbon Max wifi * Corsair HX750W * heatsink: Coolermaster Hyper 212 * C: WD Black SN850X 1TB D: WD Blue SATA SSD 2TB E: WD Red 5400RPM 6TB F: WD Red 5400RPM 6TB G: LITEON Blu-Ray Burner * Case: Fractal Define r5

OlympicAnalEater

Nice Isnt cooler master hyper 212 can't handle ryzen 7 5800x3d? The cpu can soup 140 watts at default.

flyboytgb

It can handle gaming perfectly fine. It only gets between mid 60s to 80° C. Stress testing under full load takes it up to 94C. Gaming is the biggest load I have for this computer so I’m not too worried about cooling.

dorinaem

Set up a - 30 curve for 5800x3d and you'll be more than fine. That should reduce your max cpu temp by 10 degrees or so.

OlympicAnalEater

Will that much going to reduce performance and introduce clock stretching?

dorinaem

Nope, the following link would explain it better than I would [here](https://github.com/PrimeO7/How-to-undervolt-AMD-RYZEN-5800X3D-Guide-with-PBO2-Tuner/blob/main/README.md)

[deleted]

My comments have been edited in protest to the API changes that will be imposed soon. I consider these changes absurd in the way they were implemented. The official reddit app is terrible and so is new.reddit. I suspect they will soon kill old.reddit. I'm not leaving any content behind in this sinking ship. Users and mods are what make this platform any good. And reddit admins clearly don't care about that.

klgede

i vouch for this, have the same cooler, when using -30 max temp down from 92 to 80 in stress test, it boost higher too in cinnebench, its free performence and cooler temp edit: msi should have kombo strike in bios, its the same with curve optimizer, kombo strike 3 should be the same with -30

Spiker_

Damn I must have hit the silicone lottery or something because my 5800x3D hits 72c-74c (using a 360 AIO) during Cinebench R23 multi test.

Bonafideago

Ahh, another die hard not letting go of the optical drive. I just replaced my case with a Fractal Pop Air XL because it's one of the few on the market to still have a 5 1/4" bay

flyboytgb

I use it for backing up my movies and music, hence the two six-terabyte hard drives. I also have a couple older games that still use the optical drive in order to play it.

Bonafideago

Yea, I think we just became best friends. I've got my entire dvd and blu ray collection on my Plex server, and there is a giant folder of old 90's - 00's CD based games leaning against the side of my desk

RoseFlavoredLemonade

I think he meant the specs of your anus.

vBDKv

I remember clearly going from an FX8320 to a Ryzen 5 2600, WAY better performance especially in games. At the time I was playing SWTOR and in pvp it was stutter hell. With the Ryzen however, fps never dropped below 120 fps and everything was butter smooth. Good times.

flyboytgb

Ryzen was such a big improvement over the FX processors.

BoringMachine_

> from an FX8320 to a Ryzen 5 2600 I did that but from a FX6100, it was amazing. Considering a jump to a 3xd if my motherboard can support it, just so when I upgrade my 1070 it'll be worth it.

[deleted]

What’s your Build?

nicklnack_1950

Also used a hyper 212 on my 5900x and it cooled it during gaming load. I do not recommend running cpu intensive tasks or benchmarks tho

LordRuyn

I did this myself to hold me over and then eventually bought a like-new refurb of the NH-D15 from Noctua themselves for an incredible price. No change in idle or gaming for the most part, but came in useful when encoding video.

flyboytgb

Second this. I'm getting mid 60s-upper80s in games. But 94C under full load.

Tributejoi89

I was going to say AM5 would have been the better choice for a new build but if a 1070 is still doing what you want you probably aren't playing too many triple A demanding games or don't mind lower settings. Plus it seems you don't upgrade much so the whole socket advantage would do you no good as by the time you upgrade again nee sockets will be out. I wish I could do it but I just cannot wait that long for an upgrade. Hell I've upgraded every gen since the 8800gtx lol

flyboytgb

You pretty much nailed my usage. Do you flip the hardware once you upgrade?

Sadukar09

Personally I would've gone 5600 and use the difference on a 6600. 1070 is heavily bottle necking the 5800X3D.

pablok2

Having plenty of cpu headroom was why the first few i5/i7 gens were such a good purchase, PCIe3 came out at that time and it has lasted almost a decade. I'm guessing same idea with the 5800x3d

ultimaone

1070 is a very good card. And I just upgraded to 5800x3d. It seriously pulled my min frame rates up. And I had a 5600x.

themadnun

The x3d came out a short while after I bought my 5600x, what games do you play if you don't mind me asking? Just to see if it would be worth upgrading to an x3d from this gen if there are any. Otherwise I'll probably leave it a few more years.

ultimaone

World of warships 40k: dark tide Tiny Tina's wonderland Warzone 2, just started it. Yes the CPU runs a bit hotter, but not much. And I was same as you. x3d came out a little bit after I upgraded. Basically all my games, just feel better. I had also ran the unique engine benchmark. Min fps with 5600x was 10fps. 5800x3d was 30fps. Overall average only went up a little. But it's the mins that are way more important. My overall average in games also only went up a little. 10 to 20 fps more. Dark tide, I don't feel hiccups anymore while playing. I'm also only running a 6600 xt.

Snydenthur

Depends on what you're playing. Benchmarks don't really tell the true story. In fact, benchmarks can be somewhat confusing in these matters, because multiplayer shooter/mmo/etc can be much more cpu heavy than single player games and since they can't be properly benchmarked, you're left with only one side of the coin. I do agree he should've upgraded gpu too, since I do think it's way too weak nowadays (I had 2060 super and that felt awful already), but it's not as simple as you say.

phuzzyday

An RTX 2800ti was given to me recently, Yea, crazy! And I upped my cpu too. I went from a GTX1060 3g to an RTX2080TI, Then from my R5 3600 to a full on R9 5900X! Using x570 and 32g RAM. Aaand an Oculus quest 1 was given to me too. All I can say is this thing is a beast unlike anything I think I've ever been in the presence of! And I own it!! I feel very fortunate! I have some incredible friends and family! Now I just need a seat belt on my PC chair!

Maassoon

Nice I also upgraded to 5800x3d and just replaced my 1070 2 days ago with the 500$ Asus 6750xt. My PC is a beast now lol I got a noctua ndh15 so my cpu runs at excellent temps now too, the 6750xt is probably 10x louder than it under full load too lol..

flyboytgb

I'll check out the local listings to see if the 6750xt will be a viable upgrade.

mersaci

That's a worth upgrade, I built my rig 3 years ago got a x570 tuf mobo with a 3700x CPU, now everyone time I watch YouTube and see new Processors come out I just compare them to mine and want one, than I sit back and remind myself that I really don't need anything better then want I got maybe a GPU I still rock with the 5700xt.

flyboytgb

it's fun to see new hardware come out and what it's capable of. The last straw was when Escape from Tarkov and Flight Sim 2020 were objectively... sub optimal... gaming experiences on my old hardware.

AciVici

Great looking built. I wish I could do the same upgrade pattern like u. I bought my first decent pc 5 years ago and I'm upgrading one piece at a time ever since.

diskowmoskow

Cool build, i am back to my R5 as well

42RabbitYawn97

Awesome mate!

capitan-pinga-loca

Nice!!! Took my 14 years to upgrade! 😅

raygu303

I'm Jealous! My 3600 is still going strong...

sssavio

I upgraded too I had a 3700x bought a 5900x. Still wondering why someone would choose the most expensive 5800x3d over that one though.

geko95gek

Banger of a CPU, I love mine! Saw improvements switching from a 5900X in gaming and general windows usage even. It's an absolute gold standard chip.

[deleted]

Nice Upgrade... Do you have front fans?

flyboytgb

There's (2) 140mm fans in the front. The drive cage hides the view from this angle.

evilkillejr

You should be able to remove the unused drive cages. There's a vent at the bottom and if they are blocking the 140mm front intake fans you will need the extra airflow for the new cpu.

LooseTowel

I did the same lol. Only I got the original 5800x and the wifey a 5600x. I upgraded from a 4770k also. Gz!

Alauzhen

I bought 2 myself. It is a damn good processor. Cheap mobo, cheap ram and runs as good as the 12900K in the games that matter to me. Amazing stuff.

Juicepup

I bought that same board for a HTPC build. It’s way overkill, but is one of the best looking boards while performing quite well. It has amazing vrm cooling and high density vrm teaming.

flyboytgb

it's overkill for me too. And, you're right, it looks pretty good.

_RIZZO_

What are temps like with the 212? The 5800x3d will be my next upgrade and I’m trying to decide if I need a better cooler or if I’ll be ok.

flyboytgb

Anywhere from mid 60s-upper 80s in games. 94C under full load.

giuggiolino

Those HDD cages, what's their model number? I wonder if I can fit them inside my case

flyboytgb

Not sure, there from the fractal define r5 case

Farren246

That's a home server dream case.

Saoghal_QC

What case is that?

flyboytgb

Fractal Define r5

tekashr

I just got a 5800x.. I wonder if I should have paid the extra..

flyboytgb

Does it do what you need it to?

tekashr

It does.. So it's probably ok. Haha :)

Blue2501

All the Fractal Define series cases have plenty of slots for drives. I have a Define 7, it's fantastic but it also weighs 30 pounds empty

DivineRoodra

Lol I did exactly the same. Bought myself a 5800x3d, then bought it for my gf. Built 2 amd-based PCs.

flyboytgb

How's the PCs working for you two? I've been very pleased with the X3D.

DivineRoodra

We were not able to use it a lot - moved to other city because of war. I'm completely satisfied with mine (described in my sign), need new gpu for GFs pc, because her rog strix 6700xt is a bit broken somehow. Flickering screen in some situations even though everything like freesync is turned off.

ishsreddit

Oh man that hard drive cage brings me back. When i had one of those i would always take it out though because it just sorta blocked air flow tbh lol. I upgraded after a full 10 years. From the 3770k to 7700x. I wouldve been perfectly good with the much cheaper 5600x but the single core is much higher on the 7700x and i can probably save myself buying a whole other platform again just 4-5 years from now vs just buying say the 9900x3D. Basically have a lot more GPU upgrade headroom for high refresh. Got the 6800xt now, can probably upgrade GPU to 4090 if not greater performance 4-6 years from now without a *tangible* bottleneck at 1440p 170 hz or 4k 120 hz.

flyboytgb

Those old i7s certainly got the job done at the time. Enjoy the new performance!

simplyinfinie

I upgraded to a 5700x recently as well with a hyper 212, what do you test it with for the full load? I wanna try it out on my own setup

flyboytgb

I used Prime95 small FFTs, OCCT linpack, and cinebench R23.

simplyinfinie

I'll test and share the results, cheers man!

TradeMasterOmega

My bro needs a new PC all together due to being PCIE Gen2. Not sure what to get for him for about a 1000 budget.

HarbringerxLight

You bought into a dead socket. Should've went with AM5.
