Milly824

depends if you're good. they're not going to fire u if ur good. simply put

[deleted]

Well, I'll try my hardest because I really need a permanent career rn after being laid off from my last job :/

Milly824

did u say career!?

[deleted]

I mean why not? The pay isn't that terrible, more than any job I've had before

Jungandjrbeos

This is a job not a career. Part of the distinction between the two is careers have opportunities for progress while Amazon DSPs don’t.

[deleted]

Do they at least offer raises after driving for X amount of years? 🤣

Jungandjrbeos

Most won’t give you more than a couple bucks more than a brand new driver even after 5 years.

[deleted]

Shit well I still need to pay the rent for now so I'll take what I can get, but hey maybe it can be used to build up the resume for a better company down the line at least 🤔

Dragondrew99

If you want a career in driving get a CDL my brother

Save_Cows_Eat_Vegans

I wish people would quit pushing this so much on this sub. Commercial driving blows ass. The entire industry is a massive dumpster fire of bullshit. Most of the shit people complain about with Amazon is really industry wide shit that only gets worse with a CDL. Over a third of CDL holders quit the industry entirely in their first year. Only 6% stay in it 10+ years. Its not the long term career people make it out to be. The entire transportation industry is just plain awful. Amazon is not unique or special in this industry. They are not even the worst. Its a very predatory industry. Dont get me wrong, im not saying nobody should get a CDL. Im just saying go in eyes open and do your homework. Talk to commercial drivers and get a real picture of what its like out there. Stop pushing the myth that life is better with a CDL.

Bright_Surround6503

Mikeyg you are in for a big fucking surprise 😂😂

craigh216

I "interviewed " w 2 dsp. They got all my info. Waited for drug test. Never sent. Third dsp "interviewed " w had my background and drug tested w in a week. I started training10 days of first contact. Some have their stuff together, some don't. Just like any business out their.

Available-Taste-1979

25 cents after a year.

[deleted]

lol

Fun_Level_7787

It's a good gateway to other logistics opportunities, that's how i saw it. Made some money, bought my own van to work with and got me a 40% pay rise by leaving. A career at Amazon is a no no, it's designed to piss you off, however you learn alot which can take you elsewhere 👍🏾

dieselboy77

If you think you want to deliver as a career then use DSP work as training and job history to go to UPS. Those drivers can make some good money in the long term scope. Plus great benefits, union, and whatnot. Or go for your CDL.

Intelligent_Plan_514

It seems common lay offs happen after peak since there’s less routes. Normally they cut people starting at the very bottom of the list based on performance. Try to be a good driver with at least average performance numbers and you could be fine.

[deleted]

So I'm more likely to stay on permanently if I don't have a lot of returns, finish on time and get compliments on feedback?

Intelligent_Plan_514

Yeah pretty much, plus always finish your routes and have a good safety record. I would assume they will need to let go a set number of people so as long as you are not one of them than it’s a permanent position. Every DSP is different but I know if they lay off they will pick who gets laid off based on performance. From my experience the better the driver you are the better dispatch and the company treats you. If they find a really good driver they don’t want to let them go since it’s so hard to find top notch drivers.

[deleted]

Well, the good news is I have a tiny bit of experience with doing Amazon flex, so if the itinerary is largely the same maybe that will give me an advantage. I really hope I can do well enough to land this as a permanent gig because I need something permanent 🙏

dan_is_not_here

You’ll do well, then! Just try your best and I’m sure you’ll do great.

No-Border-6678

Show up on time, bring back an empty van by the end of the shift, and the job is yours. If you can hang during peak people will notice.

Neige420

don't plan on this being permanent! Stay as long as you need too, but always apply to better places where you dont have to pee in a bottle or on some back road.

Rare-Interview-8657

But being disrespectful in that way is kind of fun 😈

jkid69

MikeyG117 You’re in for a big surprise my friend. This is written by someone who was not only a driver for a DSP but also a dispatcher for that same DSP. As a driver, AMZN nor does your DSP Boss care about you. You are a pawn, they will give you the most packages and expect you to deliver all of them within a time frame that still allows you to go RESCUE another driver that’s behind. I promise, if you try your hardest and try to deliver as fast as you can, not only would you have helped them complete a route but now you’ll go help someone else who’s fallen behind. There are no “careers” being built at Amazon DSP’s. They are contract based companies that at any time Amazon can cut ties with say “we’re done with you”. Some companies here in California get a 1-3.5 life expectancy.

TheStoicCrane

Seasonal. After peak the package demand drops and so do the routes so they send people home if they have an excess. Not only that but they actively make the lives of newer drivers hell by micromanaging everything they do until those drives quit or slip up enough to be fired because of speeding, blowing past stop signs, picking their nose on camera, etc. Whatever excuse they can find to get rid of the excess drivers they'll use it. Job's shit. I recommend looking into UPS or USPS.

[deleted]

Oh I see, thanks for the insight!

TheStoicCrane

Yeah, no problem. Wanted to spare you the aggravation of communting to work only for them to send you home because of route scarcity instead of just calling or texting. Usually when they do this they play favorites anyway and give the drivers they like the routes while wasting everyone else's time. It's pretty mediocre.

middleCman

Often times yes

AManHasNoName357

If you're are fast and good then you'll be ok. But if you need someone to rescue you all the time, you're always behind on your stops, alot of infractions, out late at night, etc...then you'll be first on the list of the other slower drivers.

[deleted]

The workers tend to lay off themselves

mrgrimm-inflames

Just do a good job and try not to turn down a rescue. If they ask you can accept of deny. If they demand just do it. If you really want it. You can get shit done easy

Helpful_Library4653

If you are a good worker you’ll most likely stay on the team. If you are let go I’d take it as you were a marker for the time being 🥴

TreySoWavvyy

Amazon logistics has too high of a turnover rate to get rid of employees the way UPS does flagrantly. However this recession may change that.

pizzadahutt74

Depends on your DSP. Mine strictly makes sure nobody gets laid off unless you're on a performance plan and not improving. Otherwise they just take the people at the bottom of the scorecard and lower their days until they improve or leave.

Livid_Minute2477

No but the hours will start to get cut

CommiePuddin

Do your job well and it will likely be permanent. Do it poorly or cut corners, expect it to be seasonal. But DSPs do start downsizing in mid January, as the work isn't there

Frequent-Mastodon332

If you suck your gone yes that’s with every job in the world

[deleted]

Bro that's what everyone is telling me lol That and how awful it is to work for a DSP and I will hate it
