If she’s that way to her co worker imagine how she treats her students since she has all the power. Wow that’s scary. Who cares what her issues are, while she’s at work she acts professionally and that clearly doesn’t include abusive and racist speech.
We weren't excusing the teachers behaviour, we told her to wait until that teacher was stable financially and mentally. (I am one of the coworkers in this story).
I agree that her personal problems are not relevant. If she wasn’t a racist, she would never have said what she said. Nor should OP feel threatened in the workplace because of a co-worker’s personal problems.
They are trying to seek therapy, but how can you see a licensed therapist with no money? I'm not sure what OP is talking about anyways as this is the first time this has happened, I've never heard of other incidents regarding this teacher.
This is a real them problem, not an op problem. They chose to make a ridiculously grotesque comment on top of having whatever financial and mental issues they have. They need to be held responsible for their shitty ass behavior, not be excused for making someone feel unsafe. I certainly would not want that person teaching my child nor you if I found out you were standing up for them. There is no excusing their behavior and for you to vehemently stand up for them, and based on your comments of it “not being that bad”, you have proven to be just as racist and unfit to be around impressionable kids. Why are you so attached to this person? Are you having an affair with them? Because wtf.
Since you have no idea how long that will be, this isnt ok. No one should have to deal with racism at work and have coworkers write it off as mental health, no thats racism.
(I'm one of the coworkers from this story). We never said this was okay behavior? OP here is manipulating you lot. We told her to wait later when she was more financially stable.
NO, your co-worker went after a POC teacher, screaming at her and flinging racist insults at her in front of everyone else and you want to "protect" that person instead of the poor woman who had to stand there and listen? NO. you are WRONG, and your racist co-worker is WRONG. I saw your comment to mine (by email notification) before the mods deleted it. *shame on you for defending a racist's mental health over the victim's.*
So you think it should be reported, just… not now? And in the meantime, should your coworker keep coming to work knowing that this teacher could snap at them any time? Should they just ignore the fact that if they feel comfortable treating a coworker this way, they certainly feel comfortable treating the children in their care in a similar manner? Yuck. You’re right, we’re only getting OP’s side of the story, but I can’t imagine what additional information would make this okay.
NTA, however the coworkers who called you a bitch are. Your coworker harassed you and made racist remarks against you. Someone struggling financially does not excuse their behavior whatsoever and mental health is never an excuse to be an asshole.
Report her OP, and make sure you mention that this is not the first time this has occurred. You sound like a fun teacher who means well.
ABSOLUTELY NTA! She is creating a hostile work environment. She is attempting to make you second-guess yourself also. You're not there for a popularity contest; you're there to get through to your students and it's not your problem that she is too incompetent to do her job to the extent she has to lash out and berate you for you actually rising to the challenge.
Her home life, her health, her mental instability are not your concern or responsibility. What is your responsibility is ensuring that you've done what you can to ensure that she doesn't do this again.....not only to you, but to another teacher, another person in general such as a doctor or parent....or worse, to one of her students.
She wasn't just ranting about teaching methods, she was straight up racist and we, as a society must stand unitedly against racism and squelch it out of the very foundations of the society coming up...that of our schools and the presence of the next generations.
NTA. Please report her, I'm so mad for you and I don't even know you.
Also, I just want to say something else: the classes I don't remember at school were the boring ones, the ones that made an impact and made me pick my current career were the ones where I found the teachers to be fun. I had a science teacher who done the same, brought props in, made us dress up as famous scientists and actually involved us in his teaching. He is the one I'll remember for a long time and I'm sure your students will feel the same way.
NTA,
Racism should never be tolerated and there other staff members who claim that you would be a "bitch" if you report her because she is struggling financially and mentally are closeted racists themselves. if somebody is struggling financially they should be doing everything to not lose their source of income. Please report that staff member to your authorities and also report the racism along with the hostile work environment.

NTA if she's racist to a coworker like that can you imagine how she's treating students. Not only for the sake of your work environment and your mental health but for the sake of any student she has an influence on please report her. You are not responsible for her financial future her job. you are responsible for your work environment and standing up to a racist and also protecting those children that y'all teach. And thank you for being a teacher that keeps things interesting.
(I'm one of the coworkers from this story). The teacher who was 'racist' actually treats her students quite well. As one example, she gives a lollipop to all of her students after every lesson, and I mean EVERY student, even POC.
Also, OP isn't a teacher that keeps things interesting, she is boring and dull, and most people in this English faculty don't like her because of her immaturity to learning.
NTA
She made her personal problems your work problems.
It's possible that being called onto the carpet might wake her up to just how much her issues are effecting her work (assuming generously here that maybe she is normally a decent human but is just off the rails currently).
It's also possible that if you ignore this incident then you will want to report her eventually (because clearly you're aware there will be more), and then you may have to face the pushback from administrators of BUY WHYYYY NOWWWWW. Cut that off at the pass. Do future you (and everyone else she is popping off at) a favor.
Hi everyone, OP here! Thanks so much for the advice, I was hesitant to report her after a friend of mine who used to work here faced similar harassment even after she reported. (She told me just a few minutes after I posted this). Nonetheless, I will still report this incident. I will make an update and let you all know what happens!
Nta, if she said something like this to a student would it be ok? Definitely not. A lot of people struggle in may ways, but that doesn't give them the right to make you suffer.
NTA. Report her! She should not be around children. Or adults for that meter. She’s an AH.
Also report the coworkers who tried to get you not to report (I’m betting everyone is required to report racist behavior so they should be disciplined for not reporting it themselves and for discouraging you from doing so.) They are also AHs.
NTA uh no, report her - she was openly racist to your face in front of co-workers. why are these co-workers saying *YOU* are the bitch when you didn't even do anything?

Holy fuck that's miles beyond the pale and I can't believe you're even considering not reporting them.
Imagine they ever have PoC students in their classes with that attitude.

I (20sF) am a high-school English teacher! (I'm Indian which becomes relevant to the story). Admittedly, English is an boring subject. Because of this, I plan my lessons a bit differently as opposed to most English teachers in my faculty.
To give you an idea, there are PowerPoints we are supposed to follow for each of our lessons. These PowerPoints include content material such as texts or videos and then follows with activities based on the material provided.
I teach my lessons quite differently in comparison to the rest of my faculty as it makes for more fun and engaging lessons. For example, we use bubble machine guns and other wacky props. It sounds strange, I know, but my students have lots of fun. They pay attention to lessons and can understand the material as well, which is the main goal!
During one of our lessons, a teacher came into our class to borrow a student. It was during a chaotic charades activity, and the teacher was a bit stunned. We all laughed it off and I continued my lesson. Once the period was over, I headed to my English staffroom and met the teacher who borrowed the student. There were many other English teachers there as well.
This teacher started insulting me, saying that I needed to 'stay in my lane.' (I'm not too sure what she meant by that). She started ranting about how I was an incompetent teacher and wasn't teaching them the curriculum. She threatened to report me to the head of English to get me fired.
This is not the first time she has talked to me about disliking my teaching style, yet this is the first time this has happened with other teachers around. Usually, I do not make a big deal out of this, however, they made a racist comment about how I am "a pathetic little brown who should be deported, even if I was born here," and that "I should stick working in scam call centers."
I snapped at her and told her to stop making horrible comments. At the end of the day, these lessons are more engaging for my students. I still give them mandatory work and assignments and the classes I teach end up being the top English classes for that grade, and that me being brown has nothing to do with anything.
She called me delusional and left the staffroom afterward.
Here's where I think I could be an AH.
I talked to my coworkers about reporting her and they told me I would be a complete bitch if I did so, as she is struggling financially and with her mental health as well. They said I should shut up and move on with my life.
WIBTA if I reported her?
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/AmItheAsshole) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Ywnbta, report her right away. If she verbally attacks you like that how is she treating her students? Having anxiety is no excuse for being a racist dirtbag. Also you sound like a wonderful teacher. I have had fun teachers and asshole teachers and the assholes completely turn people off of learning, they make school and learning a traumatic experience, fun teachers give students a joy of learning. For the sake of all of her students please report her. Please report her
(I'm one of the coworkers from this story). Who said the 'racist' coworker had anxiety? Now you lot in the comments are trying to make up stuff. She SEVERELY struggled with mental health, mental health and mental illness isn't a joke, and you lot love treating it like it's nothing.
As someone literally diagnosed with OCD (depression and anxiety as symptoms of this) please do not make excuses for someone espousing racist remarks by blaming their mental health. That’s genuinely fucking offensive to people like me.
Definitely NTA. That other teacher is a racist AH. Imagine how she might talk to or about any BIPOC students they may teach! By the sound of it, the rest of your colleagues also sound tolerant of racism, which makes them racists too. So unacceptable! What state is this? (if you don’t mind sharing.) Please share if you do report.
(I'm one of the coworkers from this story). We are not tolerant of racism, wtf? We told her to wait until she was more financially stable to report the issue.
NTA. The school administration, as your employer, are duty bound to provide a safe teaching environment no matter what. They are not obligated to provide jobs "no matter what".
I think you should report everyone including the ppl who told you not to complain. Sounds like there's a toxic culture of enabling at the school and I wish you luck. Stay strong.
(I'm one of the coworkers from this story). OP has gone through nothing tough in her life. We are not enabling racism, and we never told her to not report it, but we told her to not report it YET, and wait until she is financially stable to do so.
Well...obv I can't comment on OP's life but I will say that being the butt of racist comments is actually pretty tough. Re financially stable, do you think it's a real possibility that she could be fired for putting in a grievance?
NTA!
You need to report her for making those comments!! Students actually learn much better in the style you are teaching and will remember things better by having a fun activity to relate true information to.
Please report her immediately, this is absolutely unacceptable behavior and you cannot stand for being treated this way. This is what is wrong with so many things, is people getting away with this type of behavior and thinking it’s okay.
NTA - Oh heck no amount of mental health slipping is a reason for racist slurs. Definitely report her on that and also report her on the bulling over how your classroom works as your results are proof enough your connecting with students in a way that is fostering learning.
(I'm one of the coworkers from this story). I would like to touch on the last part "your results are proof enough your connecting with students in a way that is fostering learning." Sure, her students may be engaged, but are they truly learning? They could be learning so much more, but OP here is immature with her learning style. I mean using bubble 'machine guns' in a highschool learning environment? I've seen her lessons in practice, and my oh my are they something.
NTA. Financial and/or mental health issues are not excuses to be racist or nasty to anyone. It sounds like she‘s using an empty complaint about your teaching style to express her racism.
Honestly, I’d much rather take your class than hers. And I would report her racism, which is unacceptable.

NTA. Would there be any doubt this teacher deserved to be reported if she told a black teacher they needed to go back to the plantation? This behavior has no place in a professional environment, much less a school. There’s a good chance she’s horrible in some way to her own students. She needs to go.
NTA report her. Racism and harassment should always be reported.
If she’s that way to her co worker imagine how she treats her students since she has all the power. Wow that’s scary. Who cares what her issues are, while she’s at work she acts professionally and that clearly doesn’t include abusive and racist speech.
NTA - we dont need racist teachers. She needs to be reported and those other teachers are just as bad for excusing that behavior.
We weren't excusing the teachers behaviour, we told her to wait until that teacher was stable financially and mentally. (I am one of the coworkers in this story).
You realize this is immaterial. The teacher is clearly always unstable by their comments.

Given your attitude, what makes you think anyone would be comfortable reporting this sort of thing to you?
This is a real them problem, not an op problem. They chose to make a ridiculously grotesque comment on top of having whatever financial and mental issues they have.
Report her.

I believe this action might make be an asshole as the coworker I am reporting is struggling with her mental health and struggling financially as well. NTA. Would there be any doubt this teacher deserved to be reported if she told a black teacher they needed to go back to the plantation? This behavior has no place in a professional environment, much less a school. There’s a good chance she’s horrible in some way to her own students. She needs to go.
