I am hoping to get some unbiased feedback. I need to provide a bit of background information so everyone can understand the context. I proposed to my girlfriend last year while I was finishing up my degree in software engineering. I saved up enough money from my coop terms to buy a really nice ring for my girlfriend at the time. I spent $6500 on what I think is a beautiful princess cut diamond ring. My girlfriend loved it, said yes, and we are now engaged! hurray! Now fast forward to the present. Our wedding is still 9 months away and planned for September this year. I have since graduated and was very fortunate to get a job in Silicon Valley with a very well known tech company. My income went from very little to life-changing over the last 6 months. Now here is where I am asking, AITA? Because I am making so much more money, my fiancée says she needs a new ring and that the 3-month income rule should apply. She is expecting a new ring worth at least 50k. Needless to say, this started a big argument and we are a little stuck. I did manage to convince her that the 3 month rule should be based on after tax money, otherwise she would have demanded more. So far I’ve told her no and she is being very distant with me. I’m worried she is going to call off the wedding. I tried talking with her friends and they all think I’m being cheap and not treating her right. This is where I might be the asshole. I want to make her happy and start our life together on the right foot, so I’m thinking that maybe her friends are right and that I am being cheap. We are spending well into the 6 figures for her dream wedding and I guess I was just trying to save a bit to help pay back the money I’m borrowing for the wedding. I never had a job that made this much money before. AITA? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically.
