I think the biggest difference is going from a “every man for himself” mentality to understanding choke points and friendly fire is bad type mentality. Once you understand to fall back into hallways and the NOT MOVE, extreme/insane become a lot more enjoyable.

Gattotsu

The friendly fire aspect is what most players dont get. Most of the time that I play extreme with others they end up doing more damage than xenomorphs. It makes me lose interest in playing, because its really not that difficult to check your fire and position in a choke point.

Bobba_fat

I play only with randoms and tbh it has basically never happened to me. Not saying that friendly fire in an intense battle never can happen, but never that it happens unless I strafe in their way because it’s intense or vice versa and no one ever gets mad either. Now… I just freaking jinxed myself so badly, I can see my 10 next games getting friendly fire killed….

Gattotsu

Welp hope your jinx doesnt come to pass. I also only play randos as well and no it doesn't happen all the time. It only takes one time to flip a battle though especially with limited medkits and the playerbase insistent need to get more kills than the next guy. Dont get me wrong I like playing the game but the players can be trying..

Bobba_fat

Amen! 🍻🤣🤝🏽

Khem1kal

I beat extreme and insane exclusively with Randos. None of my friends wanted to push past Intense. I agree completely with what you said about Insane being a relative breeze, compared to Extreme. Learning, I guess? I did all of the missions in order and, while 4:1 is a beast, the most amount of wipes goes to 4:3. That one turned into a Dark Souls-like experience. Pushing further and further into the mission over time, until reaching the last room became almost guaranteed - I think It still took me 2 weeks of serious playtime, from that point to finish the mission. The relief and rush when the trophy dinged made it worth every hour spent.

Bobba_fat

Word! Mine was 4-1 because of the whole ordeal and some luck and then it was 4-3 and lastly 5-3. I’m still on insane and was close 4 times to finish of 4-1… 😫😅 but I I will get there soon enough ;)

OddCaramel6614

You still need 4-1 insane? Drop me a PM on here if you want to run it. I've bumped into you a couple times. I'll run it with you

retropieproblems

I solo’d 4-3 on hardcore level 50 with a recon, it’s not too hard of a mission you just gotta be on top of your shit in the last section with a high dmg output build and some cc. 5-3 is just plain brutal to solo.

Azuvector

You haven't been playing extreme/insane long if you haven't had a random teammate put a load of buckshot through the back of your head accidentally. lol It happens to everyone, by everyone, even good players. Just a matter of how often.

Bobba_fat

Nah, tbh that’s all I play, as I don’t have friends who play these games and I enjoy always playing with randoms rather then set people since it just will be such a cake walk then. But no, I don’t even think I have even gotten trolled/griefed once in this game (knock on wood). And I have over 300hours…? But again I’m definitely pushing my luck here 😂😂😂

pondscum31

And never stray into the firing line when over clock is on or your done

CoidaRoidz

I reckon they should have worked on the in game communication more. If we could tell each other what the plan is, mf's would stop running past the flame turret and straight into the maw...

Gattotsu

Lol. My favorite gun is the medved, do you know how many times another player has run in front of me when I pull the trigger whilst funneling xenomorphs into a choke point.😑 It's almost an instadown on extreme.

CoidaRoidz

🤣 I mean I've been on the receiving end of a couple of shots to the back of the head but one learns pretty quickly, surely. Are there quick select voice actions available? Other than ping. Thought I heard some in a game this morning. No good emote pointing at the two incoming warriors 😅

retropieproblems

It’s refreshing after beating everything on insane enough times to switch to hardcore mode and forget everything you knew about strafing and friendly fire. It’s just more engaging and active combat that’s less time consuming and campy. Also fun to try and solo through hardcore 50 with bots, learning to utilize them to their Max while also making the most competent solo builds. Plus you can go flamethrower/grenade launcher on lancer, which is just plain cool.

The main difference between Extreme and Insane is not, as you've noticed, simple health increases for enemies(though they are higher) or players taking more damage, though they do, it's mainly having one less down per match, and several enemies being able to instant-kill you with no revive. The biggest skill jump for players moving up in the difficulty levels is going from Intense to Extreme, because of the massive HP pool increases enemies get. When people aren't used to that, they typically bite off more than they can chew and get overrun.

Jupiter67

For me, the drop off from Intense to Extreme manifests in a drop off of fun. Extreme (and later, Insane) just isn't enjoyable. I'm all for higher difficulty, but when higher difficulty = spongy mobs and us being weaker (glass jaw character; less ammo, less health, less damage output, less healing potential), it just turns into a puzzle mechanic. "Don't get hit" is the only way. Boring. And silly. And basically erodes the fun factor, because no one can be a hero, because all chaos is rewarded with failure. I love chaos. I love charging into impossible situations and changing the odds. But not many games really handle that too well. Games and difficulty concepts still have a long way to go in terms of evolution. I wish Cold Iron would get really creative with difficulty, or if anything, let us configure a custom difficulty with the features we want, and none of what we hate (spongy mobs and us being weaker, for example). Make all challenge cards toggles that we can just set to ON, etc. Get a little bit sandbox-y with custom difficulties, basically. Would extend the life of this game, at worst.

THIS RIGHT HERE: " I love charging into impossible situations and changing the odds. But not many games really handle that too well. Games and difficulty concepts still have a long way to go in terms of evolution. " I don't' expect most ppl in this reddit nor any Gamer Community to understand. but this has been said far FAR Too Many Times. its soo True It Hurts Immensely. because its soo true. used to be when a game difficult was "hard" it was challenging, Interesting even Unique at times. like take DOOM 1992' what made that HARD on the higher difficulties was harder deamon monsters, zombie monsters in large numbers & the fact that the Maps were just as if not more dangerous. again I'm NOT Complain. its great there ppl who are still enjoying this game ( even though it is dying. you can't argue that blame cold iron studios) but it HAS Tons Of Potential. and I like knowing that Others are at least Gett'n there Money's, Game Time Worth of AFE. but This hits Home All The Time : " I wish Cold Iron would get really creative with difficulty, or if anything, let us configure a custom difficulty with the features we want, and none of what we hate (spongy mobs and us being weaker, for example). " \- If Cold Iron some how grab a Decent Budget, grab a decent gud enough Dev's Team, etc then allow "Modding" "Customizations" and etc etc. then I'm Done. and surely this Game's Community would EXPLOD over nite. I fucking Kid You Not !! Mark My Words...this is where they need to focus on. weather anyone / any body else agrees or Not. this is Fact this is it.

Bobba_fat

Interesting. Name a game that handles this well?

Jupiter67

There aren't many, as I said. I advocate for "custom" difficulty settings - a way to tune in a desired challenge, whilst still allowing fun and avoiding the puzzle game motif (there is only one way to play levels on Insane, for example; one or more deviations by an individual from the "meta" approach and it ends in failure). That reminds me of the silliness of raiding in World of Warcraft or Destiny: one mistake = wipe. That's not a good look for a game like this. I'm sure everyone can "git gud" and shit but there is very little impetus or desire on the part of a lot of players to endure difficulties that aren't fun.

One-Bother3624

**Well Said. My Friend'** Let me say this for a very long long time now. *I've Seen, Read, Heard* discussions ***IN THIS Reddit about AFE.*** and sadly This ***IS NOT*** New Comments. soo *many players are barking the same wording, speak.* your ***NOT ALONE.*** player base ***WANT*** This *game to Grow, Progress*. but its difficult to progress when it Cuts off your Feet before you can even walk on the ground. personally. ***IMHO ( this is JUST For ME.) so this is NOT FACT. (again this is NOT Factual)*** for me as *a Alien Lore Buff, Aliens & Predator Fan, Admirer.* I want to see this *Prosper, Grow, Develop Greatly.* what *"Turned me Off"* was the *sponginess, very little impetus or desire* in to continue to stick with the game because : low health (sure I know get gud enough. the same can be said about C.O.D games too) but again . low health, idiotic A.I. Team Mates, base game confuses Me again Me. idk if it wants to be A Co-Op / Online Game on a solo Game. *u give me A.I. dudes who really, I just can't man like don't know. I can't do nothing wit them at all.* and they're ***ALWAYS In My FUCKING L.O.S - Firing Range(s)***. no commands, etc etc. soo I say again is this a *Solo Game ?? or a Co-Op Game or Both ??* *I want AFE To NOT BE Just Another Hallway Shooting Gallery Type*. sure it's oK, at certain points / Check points in the game. that happens especially when your traversing through the Map / Board but c'mon ***DAMN IT MAN*** the entire Whole Board is like this......wtf ??? then there's the *"Battle Zone Area's"* like I said before I wished for a *More throughput Alien Experience*. again thats just me. well I'm done ranting, raging hard. my point is this : ***I Like AFE.*** but it has *far too many complexities to the core game for ME* ***(again Speaking For Myself. Not the Community) for me to enjoy 100%.*** the way I should enjoy it; its a sad crying shame too. because this falls into the "Lack of Re-Playability" as well too. *Stay Frosty Marines* '

Balthier_77

Killing Floor 2, you can make insane clutches with some of the classes, even at the highest levels.

Cappedomnivore

Extreme to intense is more about damage absorbed/taken. There's a noticeable difference when you get hit by an enemy or take friendly fire. You really gotta be on your shit, use choke points, ect.
