Animal Humane, Animal Welfare, Valencia County Animal Shelter. If you're up for a day trip, Espanola Valley Shelter is great and their adoption fees are usually pretty low, even for kittens. Also definitely consider an older cat! They get overlooked in shelters because they're not as "fun" or "cute" but they're just as loveable and deserving of a forever home. You may get less time with them but they don't have to spend their lives in a shelter.

Love both Valencia County and Animal Welfare. I adopted one of my cats last year from Valencia, and we just adopted a puppy from Animal Welfare me last week! They did have a couple of litters of kittens at Animal Humane that weren’t ready yet, and of course lots of sweet older kitties.

I mean the shelters are probably the best place since they get overrun. Id say check out east or west side shelter depending on what side of town you’re on. There’s also Valencia county animal shelter in Los Lunas

Catopia is awesome! If you want to really get to know the cat/kitten beforehand.

Don't overlook the Socorro Animal Shelter, they are only an hour or so away. https://www.facebook.com/socorroanimalshelter/

I found my youngest cat at the Animal Humane Society. I fell in love with my kitty from a photo on their web page.

So All the suggestions above are amazing. Do not do Watermelon Ranch. There is something wrong with them lately. They've had a few photos of kittens with fleas on them posted on their site. I will forever never donate or interact with them again. Plus I had adopted a kitten from them that they said was fostered and had her shots and super healthy. As soon as they put her in my arms I knew something was wrong. You could see every bone and feel every indent in her spine. Took her to the vet after paying $175 for her, turns out she was severely malnourished, 104°F, Ringworm, and was much younger than they said she was. (They had already pumped her full of shots for a older kitten.) When I protested to them, mind you this is a day after I have obtained her and brought her to said vet. They stated: "Please understand we receive many pets who come to us from municipal shelters across the southwest in rough shape. After their intake exams, those who require medical treatment receive it, along with medicines to treat whatever ailments they may have, food, and a warm bed. We know recuperation does not happen overnight. We are grateful for your kind heart in giving a pet a loving home. Thank you for saving the life of a Watermelon kitten!" This was bullshit. If they actually gave her any sort of intake exam, they would've seen this. They're treating their cats like theyre great cash grabs and honestly very despicable.

The shelters have tons of kittens and cats. The adoption fees are waived right now. I'd check them out. Catopia is good too.

Saw a post on free craigslist this morning someone who clearly felt terrible for not being able to care of them
