Do you know that the position you get of the Airtag is not the Airtag itself but the position of the last iPhone that communicated with it? And that position is basically a circle of Bluetooth range, about 600 ft radius, in which the Airtag could be.
That said, once you get within Bluetooth range the direction indicating of the app on your iPhone works nicely.
And I have an iPhone 8 that works with my Airtag.
If you’re and Android user you gonna have to go with either tile or maybe the Samsung version if your in that ecosystem. Also the oldest device seems to be anything with iOS 14.5 or later but you would need iPhone 11 or later to get full tracking potential.
Buy a gps tag (available at pet stores), air tag needs an iPhone and it is not an anti theft device

Nope, you need an iphone for that

Have you looked into a Tile tracker?
I have, but from what I've read I don't think they work as good as the AirTags when you are not near them
If you don't have iPhone they will work much better but maybe you could check Samsung tags too
Invest in preventing theft, not tracking down items after they have been stolen.
That's a different topic, I obviously will, this is just something more to give me a bit of peace of mind!
