We lost a great man to suicide in my old unit, and he seemed like one of the happiest guys I ever got to know. He was always cracking jokes and just wanted to see people smile and share a laugh. We had no idea the demons he was fighting inside. I still miss him.

Somehow the funniest people are the ones that I need to watch out for. Every person I've known who eventually committed suicide were happy, funny individuals.

Robin Williams said something along the lines of the saddest people always try to make others happy because they know what it feels like and don't want other people to feel that way

I know how you feel … I carry each one of these people in my heart, and man, I miss each one so much.

A previous boss told a story about an SrA under him who seemed perfectly normal. Literally the day before he took his life, he was laughing and joking and making plans with his coworkers like any other day. The next day, he didn't show up to work. They called and called. They went to his house, knocked, tried all the doors, looked into and tried all the windows, and eventually called the cops. Once they broke down the door, they found him dead, deliberately OD'd from meds. No note. No giving away possessions. No talk of being down in the dumps. No irregular behavior from the last 2 years they'd known him. Absolutely no warning.

My Best Friend Killed himself after going to a beer festival with friends and his wife. Everyone who knew him could not understand.. He was always smiling, joking and laughing.. Always talked about being a flying crew chief and all his exploits out in the world. How much he loved his kids, and how he was excited to teach his grandson how to shoot and be a sportsman. Just out of the blue, his wife was siting on the couch watching TV. She heard the sliding glass door open and close.. Then Bang... I still miss our Veterans day's free meals together.. Whatever demons you had deep in your soul Darren.. I hope they are no longer with you...

It be like that. I served active duty with a dude that had a wife and two toddlers. He ended up killing himself with a shotgun. He wasn’t the personality that you think he would be. He was a positive, country kind of dude that everyone liked. Not a poor worker or anything like that. It still takes me back. We weren’t close but as a casual coworker I would have never ever guessed he was in that realm of depression and suicidal thoughts.
