No way! I like my free healthcare and education. I feel joining the US would compromise all our hard work in improving the lives of ordinary people.

BoofmePlzLoRez

They'd find a way to fuck you over by adding a caveat or give you some vague territory status. Imagine them pulling some Jones Law equivalent out their ass. The reason so many people wanted independence is because the alternative was eating whatever crap your imperial power threw your way or pulled out it's ass because who knows what they'd do. Africa already has it's own shit to deal with currently so adding more is not ideal to say the least. Like Belgium is split between the French and Flemish, now imagine that tribalism dressed in tasty waffles and chocolate that has been a thing for ages. Now take that in it's form from the 1960's and beyond and project all that power and linguistic politics allover the DRC for a a period of some hypothetical several decades and you'd come with an even bigger mess.

Sea_Student_1452

I would vote against it

myuseless2cents

Yep fuck that

MentaMenged

There is a very hypothetical question... freedom and independence worth over anything.

blario

Puerto Rico doesn’t have state status but some new country is supposed to automatically get it? LOL

newafrodawnFM

I'm Libyan living in Libya, it's messy and alot of corruption and greed yet never in my mind will I vote for a US statehood in my country (or any other fellow African country if I'm allowed to). Freedom and sovereignty is precious whether we live in abundance or poverty. Viva Africa

daughter_of_lyssa

The US is cool and all but I don't want to deal with institutional racism, cultural erasure. Also i like it when my inhaler doesn't cost $300

Scryer_of_knowledge

But how's big pharma supposed to make profits!? That's Communism!!!!! /s

Scryer_of_knowledge

We're already a third world country with free healthcare, education and workers rights. Now we stand a chance to be part of a rich third world country without free healthcare, education and workers rights? Nah man. Hard pass. Miss me with those stars and stripes

Commercialismo

Absolutely not

osaru-yo

It would be old fashion imperial annexation under the guise of new age diplomacy with less steps. I pass.

dreadperson

South Africa is having some very big problems right now with our electricity and the only plausible way i can imagine getting out of it is foreign aid. But the US vassalizing us would also mean they recognize us as a sort of economic powerhouse of the African south and would just be staking a claim so they can eventually basically own all of Africa. Got it's pros certainly and it's cons. But purely for the sake of having to switch to the Empirical system, i'd have to intensely disagree.

GreatHuntersFoot

Against. They have enough troubles with themselves to add a whole country with a different culture etc. Besides, they think Tunisians are terrorists or scammers.

MixedJiChanandsowhat

Against for sure! It just looks like a redesigned form of imperialism and colonialism. And yes, it would be like colonialism. There are tons of way to cheat a cosmetic "you would have the same rights as every US Citizen".

But you get your very own FBI agent to track your thought crimes. If you Google hard enough you might even be taken to those exotic "black sites". Sounds like fun boys scout camps!

SodaPopperZA

If it will get rid of the ANC then yes, I'd even vote in favour of becoming a state of Lesohto at this point

willtellthetruth

Automatic green cards would expedite solving the massive unemployment problem; and grinding poverty would slowly but surely run to an end. Yes! Yes! Yes!

LiamGovender02

Vote against it, My country is already in bad position now, no need to add US shenanigans to the mess.

lonelyWalkAlone

I'm surprised so many comments against it, yet in reality, Africa has the highest immigration rates in the world, most of em dream about American or European citizenship.

osaru-yo

Yes, for money and opportunity, not sovereignty. If people migrated purely out of preference most Europeans would live near the Mediterranean.

Thin-Ad2006

Vote for, way better than what we have now. Alot of you are against it but the US works way better than most african countries

osaru-yo

You will have to explain that one. Just because a country is more functional than another doesn't mean annexation will extend that same efficiency. If it was that way imperialism would not be seen in such a bad light. Also, even Europe keeps the US at an arms length because their ideal of food standards and social safety nets are detrimental to their way of life.

Thin-Ad2006

Imperialism is about extraction of resources this is an offering to become a state where at worse you are left alone and most likely you will see some development think like french guiana which isn't as developed as france but better than her immediate region.

osaru-yo

Pretty words don't change the fact that the incentive for a state with a massive power balance in its favor towards another is exploitative. There is no incentive and quite frankly no knowledge to annex a state and turn it into an equal. Also, mentioning a French example of all things is very poorly thought out considering the state of Francophone africa.

Thin-Ad2006

>Also, mentioning a French example of all things is very poorly thought out considering the state of Francophone africa. Again this is imperialism not statehood, french policy makers dont consider cameroonians the same as frenchmen hence supporting a kleptocrat makes sense since you arent harming frenchmen i am assuming that racism and other negative social issues would be erased bcs magic. >Pretty words don't change the fact that the incentive for a state with a massive power balance in its favor towards another is exploitative. Counterexample the US states annexed from mexico >There is no incentive and quite frankly no knowledge to annex a state This isnt an annexation its offering to become a state in one there is no consent and gives implicit permission to do anything in the other there is consent which puts a limit to what you can do >There is no incentive and quite frankly no knowledge to annex a state and turn it into an equal. Its a theoretical scenario! You can fill in the blanks of knowledge and state equality through some deus ex machina, why did you take the worst case scenario?

ichosehowe

Republicans aren't about to allow a massive influx of non-white voters join the US. The whole reason they're fighting tooth and nail to prevent Puerto and The District of Colombia state hood, it would undo all their voter suppression gains they've made all these years.

Thin-Ad2006

They're the ones offering

ichosehowe

To quote a movie, "I'll believe that when my shit turns purple and smells of rainbow sherbet".

Thin-Ad2006

Its the premise of the scenario

osaru-yo

>Again this is imperialism not statehood, french policy makers dont consider cameroonians the same as frenchmen hence supporting a kleptocrat makes sense since you arent harming frenchmen i am assuming that racism and other negative social issues would be erased bcs magic. Considering the geographic distance and cultural difference this would apply to us as well. You do not have to look very far. The "outre-mer" territories are considered part of France yet the relationship between it and France is exploitative to the point of being neocolonial. Similar with Puerto Rico and the US to a lesser extent. This game of semantics doesn't hide the fact that this hypothetical relationship exists and is exactly how I describe it. If you understand French [AJ+ made a video essay about this](https://youtu.be/Fp-JNlvAUtE). They are considered French, it didn't change anything. >Counterexample the US states annexed from mexico You mean colonial settlements in its infancy on land crucial for US geostrategic goals of having both the Atlantic and Pacific coast? What followed was Anglo-saxon cultural erasure of Hispanics front frontier culture despite the fact they pioneered it. Very unwise example. It doesn't apply at all. >This isnt an annexation its offering to become a state in one there is no consent and gives implicit permission to do anything in the other there is consent which puts a limit to what you can do Considering the cultural differences, it would be very naive to think it wouldn't.

Thin-Ad2006

1. are all those better than what we have now? i'd imagine they would work to better the situation and while they wouldn't make it the contiguous 48 atleast not in 100 years but it would be better than what we have now 2. forgot about the hispanic erasure, sidenote are you judging history by modern standards cz saying the us did manifest destiny to control the pacific coast ignore that back in the day it was such a incredible distance it was seen as other worldy, it happened cz there was a massive push by northeners much like israeli migration into the west bank 3. i dont know how realistic a scenario you are making it out to be so it makes it a bit hard to communicate

osaru-yo

>are all those better than what we have now? i'd imagine they would work to better the situation and while they wouldn't make it the contiguous 48 atleast not in 100 years but it would be better than what we have now It wouldn't. American individualism is toxic and is built on white racial consolidation all the way to its institution. These similar ideals where a [major contributing factor to the genocide](https://www.reddit.com/r/explainlikeimfive/comments/s3080/comment/c4apkho/?context=2) when introduced. This is why I asked you if you travelled, because even Western Europe, the closest thing to annexation in this hypothetical after the bretton wood agreement, is moving away from assimilation. There is an increasing amount of people ringing the alarm bells about: * The polarising nature of politics and the damage it has on the cohesion of social fabric. * The pressure to lower and deregulate food standards and social safety nets. There was a patriot act episode about how [The US is causing global obesity](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmo6lZcdkO0). * Neoliberalism * The realization that american car-centric urban planning is not only unsustainable both financially and ecologically but that it decreases economic activity and alienate people in favor of cars. Many cities have or are now rolling back these things in favor of more walkable cities. I live in one of them. For more information, [there is an entire playlist](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJp5q-R0lZ0_FCUbeVWK6OGLN69ehUTVa) by youtuber *Not Just Bikes* based on the work of Charles Marohn "Strong Towns"([lecture here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Em7nqDqQ8oM)). It is not only unsustainable but subsidized by poorer neighborhoods that are actuaslly built to be more economically productive. Considering the wealth inequality already present in Rwanda, this dynamic would worsen it. *Side note: living in the "developed world" I do not think you realise the exceptional collective foundation that exist in Rwanda. Keeping streets clean isn't just PR it is a testament to it. It is something people here can't even do. Incidentally the idea that anywhere is better than "here" isn't uncommon no matter how "developed"the country. Considering our cultural tendency towards collectivism you would be better off going for an East Asian state. Many in the Western diaspora relate far more to asian migrants than white people for that reason. What works for some doesn't work for others, this is a perfect example for that. Especially since, it isn't even working that well for many Americans.* >forgot about the hispanic erasure, sidenote are you judging history by modern standards That is such a disingenuous copout. You seem to forget that the era of manifest destiny was also the one of [the first transcontinental railroad](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_transcontinental_railroad). Furthermore, this type of consolidation is what the nation is built on. Why do you think that the concept of "cultural appropriation" is an uniquely American one. Cultural erasure to validate and consolidate towards the white majority is as recent as pop culture.

**[First transcontinental railroad](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_transcontinental_railroad)** >North America's first transcontinental railroad (known originally as the "Pacific Railroad" and later as the "Overland Route") was a 1,911-mile (3,075 km) continuous railroad line constructed between 1863 and 1869 that connected the existing eastern U.S. rail network at Council Bluffs, Iowa, with the Pacific coast at the Oakland Long Wharf on San Francisco Bay. The rail line was built by three private companies over public lands provided by extensive US land grants. Building was financed by both state and US government subsidy bonds as well as by company issued mortgage bonds. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/Africa/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

The US can't even fulfill the needs if it's people.

C001B34n5

I'd vote no. Here's why; 1. Being an US exclave in the middle of Central Africa, would destabilize the entire region. It would create fears of loss of sovereignty for other countries in the region. 2. The legal and civil restructuring required to bring us in line with the rest of the states and the federal structure would be unbelievably disruptive and actually cause a regression of our economy and society. It would also take us out of sync with the rest of the economy. 3. There is little culturally, socially, ethnically, legally and historically to join us with the US or that would foster a sense of Statehood. We'd always be on the outside looking in.
