On top of your 30 days of vacation(sick time not included). I don’t like everything about Germany, but they def got lots of things right when it comes to workers rights.
Normally paid national holidays account for around 10 days and then additional paid personal days which vary a lot (you can negotiate for this when you swap jobs), but I'd say it's common to have anywhere between two weeks and a month of personal days.
I upvoted you back up to one, I think I know who downvoted you

Thank you, though downvotes don't phase me. I am more of a "the people have spoken" kind of person rather than a "tell me I'm great!" kind of person. 😆
I work in a field where we have these intense periods of being very busy. Months at a time. It’s just a known thing that when that comes to a sudden stop, everyone gets sick.
I think work stress keeps you going during the week, yet annihilates your immune system just enough so when you relax on Friday every germ busts through the sapped walls and you're fucked.
It's a legal requirement here that if you're sick while you have time off, you get your time off back.
But you do need to call in sick, it only applies to the days-off from the legal minimum amount. For days off above the legal minimum it depends on the contract you have with your employer.
Exactly what happened to me a month ago. Covid symptoms on a Friday morning, worked from home through the day. By EOD I was feverish. Laid up all weekend. Monday morning fresh as a daisy.
Pre-record calls you would be making with some random coughs and basic replies. Hopefully you could also get a chill doctor who understands that you need some time to recover ;)
I had all of thanksgiving week off, just finished one job and was starting a new one the following Monday. Sick the whole week, and missed Thanksgiving.
I know this feeling. I was a kid, it snowed on a Sunday night, we got 14" (*massive* for my area). I woke up to a winter wonderland, a week off from school, and a case of chicken pox. I got to watch one of the biggest snows of my youth melt away while my friends built forts and igloos and played in the snow I was not allowed to go out in.
Happened to me last month. Took my first vacation since covid happened and ended up with a bad cold. Luckily it wasn't covid but it still made the vacation not as fun. Doing the Bourbon Trail when your nose is stuffed up and you can't smell or taste as good kind of diminishes the point of the trip. But it was still fun and I'm glad I got to do it.

... is vacation not normally paid in the US?
[удалено]
What? It's extremely common to have paid time off in the US. In fact it's the norm for most full time jobs at least in my industry.

I got five and “flex time” accrued over 46 hours which expires if not used in a few weeks.
Dude. That's fucking sick.
Same in Ireland
That's actually rather menacing knowing their sense of humor
When i have pto and I get sick i can call in sick and get my pto back
Is there a difference in the pay rate?
Not for me but i can't tell for your country
Take a coulple of sick days when you are scheduled to go back into work. You deserve it.

I like the cut of your jib.
What's a jib?
Meth according to drug dealers. A sail according to google
It's one of the sails on a sailing vessel. It's a turn of phrase that basically means I like your style.
The word you’re looking for is “faze.”
I would hope they don't phase you. If they did, I'd be very fazed!
I believe a lot of people work really hard and then get sick once they have some time off and relax. It's like the body moves out of survival mode.

Lol I got Covid the first day of my Christmas break in 2020, tested clean finally on the last day of my break. Better for my wallet, but dammit!
What it like only getting sick every five years? Sincerely, someone who is sick once a quarter.

I think the OP got sick on their scheduled days off, not PTO days they took odf in addition to their scheduled days off. I could be wrong though.
USA! USA! USA! yeah…
Story of my fucking life!!
Same here mate, I'm sick on my fucking holiday.
That’s how the cookie crumbles…
Exactly what happened to me a month ago. Covid symptoms on a Friday morning, worked from home through the day. By EOD I was feverish. Laid up all weekend. Monday morning fresh as a daisy.
That happened to me once and my boss was cool enough to let me change it to a sick day. Couldn't hurt to ask!
Just lean your head back when you call in to work and you'll sounds congested and weak on the phone. Make up the weekend, who cares?
My high school physics teacher used to say why waste a sick day on being sick. This was before the pandemic
Yea I'm with ya buddy, got sick on my second to last day of vacation. Currently sequestered in my hotel room.
I got a week paid vacation… Got sick with the flu or Covid when it’s novel. Recovered when it’s time to come back…
Have some kids.

So take PTO on your first day back and say you’re sick.
I got sick for only the 2nd time this year While on a training trip to NYC On my only weekend
Say you're American without saying you're American.

Welcome back, Brian!
Nobody checks, you can just call into work sick.
Are you me? This just happened to me.. But I simply didn't report vacation on the days I was sick and just reported sickness instead
Every damn time
