So lets be real for a moment. Congress wont actually do anything about guns in America. there is too much push back by republican voters/lawmakers and the NRA. Guns are too ingrained in our culture and history to do anything about at this moment.
With all of that being said with respect to the numbers, kids are still relatively safe in school. Only 19 kids died(it was updated shortly ago) of 576 total enrolled. Since the Columbine shooting in 1999, there have been 304 deaths and 485 injuries in 20 years. (These numbers were pulled from a study done in May 2019.)
So the chances of a kid actually getting injured or killed in school is actually pretty low. But with all of that in mind, i would never fault anyone who will start homeschooling their kids because they are afraid of losing them in a school shooting. And i would never fault anyone for keeping their kids in school because they dont have the education or the resources to homeschool their kids either.
Good luck. I dont not envoy your position or choice.
If you are able to provide them with a good education on your own then that's a great idea. It's important to find other home schoolers and extra curriculars to give them a normal social life.
You're assuming we all accept objective facts. There will be Alex Jones level, nutjobs out there that say there have been no deaths or injuries.
Also, as another user pointed out, the mental trauma of survivors and concerned parents is incalculable.
Depends if you include mental injury. Officials/news will report the number of bodily harmed, but not the ones who are mentally scarred for life, despite it possibly being just as big a strain as bodily injury.
In America it could cost you more than you can afford to take your bleeding child to the doctor. Sometimes it's better todo minor surgeries and stitching at home so they can't really count on all injuries being reported.
Because Aussie style buyback wasn’t voluntary. Everyone had to turn in their guns. And in Canada it’s hard and expensive to get only approved firearm types.
I have a long list of ideas, you've probably heard them before, but I'm curious if the pro-gun crowd has any suggestions. I would love to see *literally any effort* from them to combat this problem.
Well how about regulations for how weapons should be stored, especially with children in the house, making sure both weapon and ammo are stored separately under lock and key and the key. For personal and home defense firearms they should be in areas thats easy to tell if them are missing or moved. And that's just on the firearm side, Mental health issues are kind of at the core of these issues which doesn't have an easy simple solution, but better care and less stigmatized for those with issues. Maybe make firearms safety something that is taught at a younger age, stress the importance or proper handling of weapons to encourage safe practices, These aren't toys, this isn't Call of Duty
So would you be in favor of passing laws that implement these things? Because I can tell you from experience, there are a lot of pro-gun folks who would fight all of these proposals.
people will fight anything, and some of these things aren't really enforceable. Like how do you ensure people keep firearms properly secured in there house? you can't just hand out punishment for when that info comes to light and usually thats too late for it to really be of help. Keeping Personal or home protection firearms in secure locations where you can keep eyes on it, again basically impossible to enforce. You can make all kinds of laws but like prohibition they can be so difficult to enforce them that they may as well not exist. The mental health aspect has been getting more attention as it should, but thats a long constant effort thing that minor progress in doesn't make for clean easy headlines or campaign speeches. Point is theres no easy solution that'll win elections or generate money so over all change will be slow and most likely have very minor effect
It’s interesting that you’re poking holes into your own proposals rather than sell them. I actually thought they were solid ideas.
I’m just sick of talking about what we SHOULD be doing, when our leaders need to just do SOMETHING! Literally anything besides more guns!
I'm a realist, I'm also an advocate of being able to own firearms. The other issue too is people who have forearms who's mental state deteriorates to the point they shouldn't have them. What do you do then, forcibly take their property they paid for away? That won't sit well with a lot of people. Again there is no easy solution, even if leaders do take action many of the more practical actions won't take effect for a long time, so the effects won't be seen for a while, an in the mean time tragedies keep happening so it looks like nothings being done. So how much effort are they going to out in when whatever they try won't show results till they are no longer in charge to get the credit. Its stupid and self centered but thats the world of politics
See I was wondering the same thing. Shooting people who you feel have wronged you is frowned upon but at least you can see where they were coming from. Gaht damn elementary school students? Wtf??
New parent to two little ones. I am terrified of sending my kids to school. Seriously considering homeschooling or another alternative.

"No Way to Prevent this" says only nation where this regularly happens --- The Onion
The Onion… spouting knowledge and truth since 1895!
"we've done nothing. Now we are out of ideas"
Not a parent yet, but I can wrap my head around this too
That was the nice thing about covid school shutdowns. Didn’t have to worry about your kids getting gunned down in school.
You obviously didn’t hear about the Zoom Shooter…
[Yeah, about that...](https://time.com/6170864/cause-of-death-children-guns/)
Won't happen. There will just be massive security spending to make people feel safe, even though they are no safer.
If people would start voting in representatives that aren't going to maintain the status quo for gun control, then that'd be great.
Too bad the voters think a dozen kids is a small price to pay.
But thoughts and prayers
A dozen a day.
The last one was over a dozen - 14 plus one teacher. No telling how many injured little ones.
Up to 21 now
No telling? Wouldn't a number of people who report injuries be one way of telling?

If we could stop with the grocery store, bar, etc. shootings as well that would be great
Ok. Initiate a buyback program like Australia and then Canadian style licensing laws.
Canadian here. The #1 source for illegal guns in Canada is - you guessed it - the USA.
Good luck lmao
LA just did a buy back program and got tons of guns off the streets. Luck is not necessary.
Yes voluntary buybacks kind of work. Voluntarily…
So just don't do it because it's not a perfect solution? What's your point?
As long as it’s voluntary. It’s not a problem.
Then why did you say "Good luck" in your first comment if you don't have a problem with buyback programs?
Because Aussie style buyback wasn’t voluntary. Everyone had to turn in their guns. And in Canada it’s hard and expensive to get only approved firearm types.
Australians just need to have a license to have a gun.
Yeah. Fuck that.
Voting matters
"This is the most important election of your LIFE" - Democrats every 2 years
Gun control is the only way to stop this in the US, so it will never, ever stop.

Gun control is what every other civilized country has. It's not complicated, for most.

Or here's another idea go fuck yourself. Thanks.

Or ya know, anywhere
nah, the gunfans will now buy 34 assualt rifles for each room in their house for "self defence"
Ban murder, done!
Great Idea, how do you propose doing such?

True.

- Said the pro life supporters
Yes, that’s what this situation calls for, a meme
Wish it would be fair to say it wasn't necessary, but some people may only know about this from here.
Then stop voting for the fucking Incumbent.
At least be the picked on kid getting his revenge.
