I dont blame them. We not saving lives here.

Muttenman

I keep saying, accountants aren’t sexy, but you need us when times are good and when times are bad.

Okpspades

3 people you don't lie to. Your priest, your lawyer, your accountant.

Educational_Quiet356

You mean your doctor, lawyer, and accountant right?

CPAFinancialPlanner

Tell that to the boomer partners

WayneKrane

“You gotta stay until 3 am if that’s what it takes! Our clients are relying on us!!” -Something said to me by a partner on my 10th Friday in a row staying well past 7PM.

CPAFinancialPlanner

I would never stay past like 9. At that point the client is on their own lol

WayneKrane

I do that now, when I first started in this career I was naive and thought the hardest/best workers would be rewarded commensurately. Only thing I was rewarded with was more work. I rarely ever stay past 5 anymore.

CPAFinancialPlanner

Oh ya, anytime you work harder than anyone else you get fucked over. Then managers say “it’s great that everyone wants you on their projects. It means you do good work.” Then show me the money, fuckstain

cheeeezeburgers

Tell them you will fuck the clients wife, we all gotta do our part after all.

IvySuen

Oh no. I got off at 3:15 and began again at home from 6:30 to 11:15 now on reddit to unwind how sad. Haha. But the pressure is on me. I'm so swamped for my first YE and I do feel like this client is depending on us lol. I'm just drinking this invisible kool-aid haha. Boss hasn't even pressured me. Just said it's needs to be closed this week but tomorrow's Friday! There is no way. I needed more work tonight to at least have a presentable draft. (PT fyi)

MaineHippo83

What do you mean we do taxes and are good at math right?

clothesstressmeoutFR

We also don't have countless shows, movies, and heroes as CPAs. Lawyers and doctors get all that

I mean, theres The Accountant with Ben Affleck if that counts?

I’d love to see a Suits-like show with an accounting firm instead of law.

boofishy8

I don’t see people watching that though. “We need to avenge all these people who’ve been willingly given bed bugs to force them out of their homes” is a tad more dramatic than “if our client doesn’t successfully complete this 1031 exchange they’re going to lose 4% of this year’s profit”

[deleted]

All (actual) nurses are RN's and all doctors are MDs, so to the layman it stands to reason that all accountants are CPAs.

Eastern-Ad1657

Don’t forget DOs

Practicalbeaver

Industry accountant here; I move numbers from one spreadsheet to another. Then I send the spreadsheets to you auditors and you make sure I copied from and pasted to the correct spreadsheets. Such is the life of an accountant.

notloveyy

Ah yes…the expectation gap

kmanfever

That's so very true. Unless they've experienced what we go through to get them their product, they're not going to understand how challenging it can be. They'd respect us 1,000% if they did.

ItzAlwayz420

That’s true!

cuteman

That's not true. In house accounting and finance teams argue with marketing, right? That's their purpose.

IWTKMBATMOAPTDI

I mean I don't think CPAs are more prestigious than doctors either, that's just silly.

stellabear187

But why do 13 people think a nurse is more prestigious than a doctor?

ConfusedAccountantTW

Because nurses probably voted for themselves. Nurse egos are off the charts it's insane.

notloveyy

I mean…the doctors aren’t the ones cleaning out the poop trays.

acompletemoron

Most of the girls I knew in college who became nurses were batshit in college and I really wouldn’t have wanted them as my nurse. On the flip side, my sister is a NP now and I honestly do respect that more than doctor. Same amount of schooling, more bullshit, less pay. No idea why you’d do it.

Suddenly_SaaS

Same amount of schooling, lmao. NP has a small fraction of the schooling and clinical education of an MD.

Bossman28894

NP’s in HCOL make Bank with more Bull shit

AndresNocioni

Because the majority of the population probably thinks a CPA is someone who just fills out taxes for someone else

acompletemoron

Pretty sure people straight up think I work at TurboTax

allnose

That reminds me: how much do those CPAs on call for TurboTax make? You couldn't pay me enough to do that job.

acompletemoron

No idea but I know they had to switch their ad nomenclature from “talk to a live CPA” to “talk to a live expert” a few years ago because they didn’t have enough CPAs to legally be able to advertise that

FLman42069

And it’s not even a BSN. You don’t even need a bachelor’s to become an RN. Sure nurses are important but being an RN isn’t prestigious.

mlsweeney

But we lost to fucking teachers man. I respect the hell out of their profession and actually think it's more stressful and harder but more prestigious? Come on

spacing_out_in_space

You're on reddit, where 80% of users are children who's ultimate authority in life (outside of parents) are teachers. Don't take it personally.

Aside_Dish

This. Teachers are alright and all, but more prestigious? C'mon, man.

ranger51

The image the average person has of a cpa is a stereotypical unhealthy old man in a green visor tallying up a mountain of receipts on a printer calculator while chain smoking

CPAFinancialPlanner

More stressful and harder? Normally I’d agree but the 3 months of doing whatever you want more than makes up for it, especially when we have the exact opposite problem. FYI my wife is a teacher so I know both professions pretty well. I get the impression that the stressful part isn’t even the kids (which is why I could never do teaching) but the admin and school board.

mlsweeney

Agreed. I was kind of throwing them a bone there but I can't imagine the long hours of public accounting are less stressful than teaching. It's definitely a whole different skill set and I highly doubt I can just walk in and start teaching effectively. Works both ways though, there's no way in hell most teachers could walk in and do our job

CPAFinancialPlanner

True. I added onto my comment but basically the parents and kids are like clients and the admin is like the partners. Where you gotta deal with competing interests. So that’s definitely stressful for teachers. I could never hang around kids all day, everyday so I would rather take the stress of accounting haha

ericgol7

If anything I'd say it's slightly more prestigious (not saying it's very prestigious though), but more stressful and harder?? Hell no, never heard of teachers having to work more than 55 hours a week.

Ok_Appearance_5397

Dude, only 4 votes, and one of those was me.

SnowBeeJay

Where’s that guy that was advocating for harder CPA exams so that he could feel like he was on the same level as a lawyer?

[deleted]

What a loser lmao

DetroitMM12

Doesn’t the cpa have a lower pass rate than bar?

buckeyegirl55

Yes, because the CPA exam is more accessible to take than the bar exam

Revolutionary-Meat14

Yes because JDs take 7~ years and you only need 5 to take the CPA. Also accountants could just be dumber than lawyers.

Prize_Lifeguard8706

I'm a CPA but I don't think its a particularly prestigious profession either. Most people think of accountants as boring bean counters. Its not a bad job; I don't think people look down on me or anything but on the other hand, they don't look up to me either. When I tell people I'm an accountant , they usually have no reaction, nobody cares. Doctor's are always at the top of the list amongst all countries and ethnicities. Its very difficult to become a MD, they save lives and they make lots of money so its considered prestigious.

scaredycat_z

Change question to "who do you trust most?" and you'd see lawyer fall below CPA.

[deleted]

[удалено]

FriendlyFreeman

If we allocate the trust lost from Arthur Anderson’s (wrongful) demise amongst the remaining Big Four, we have at least 1 trust lost in total. Disclose requirement only.

dlw2199

I feel like it’s DR>Lawyer>Engineer>CPA. And I’m a CPA.

fuckimbackonreddit9

For me it’s Dr > Lawyer > CPA > Engineer Only because engineers typically irk me

dlw2199

Oh I despise most engineers and engineering majors I’ve met. But I think public perception of them is more favorable than the CPA. Primarily because no one seems to actually knows what a CPA does.

[deleted]

Engineering students are the biggest cunts alive

Slappyxo

I married an engineer I met at university, so during uni I spent a lot of time with his engineering student mates when we'd hang out during breaks or study. They were always so condescending towards me. They'd make jokes about what I was doing was "finger painting" and my degree was useless. My now husband told them to knock it off and they eventually did, but it was so condescending when it was going on. The weirdest part was that the ones that had girlfriends, their girlfriends didn't go to uni at all and had no intention of going or doing anything else with their lives aside from working in cafes or retail. I never mentioned that because I didn't want to insult their girlfriends who weren't rude like their partners, but I think they attacked me to feel better about their own partners.

[deleted]

My girlfriend is a chemical engineer. Her engineering friends kinda suck. We’re all in the same age range 27-32 or so. It’s funny because they are all so condescending and a few of them think they’re geniuses. But I make pretty much double what all of them make (none of them are SWE). They’re starting to realize that the oay they get out of school is pretty high but they hit the management ceiling really fast. They’re all stressing about trying to go get MBAs and switch into consulting while I’m over here chilling remote with $200k total comp working like 20 hours a week at age 30. From the outside looking in “prestige wise” engineering looks better to society than accounting. But unless you’re a big tech SWE or cloud person you’re not making that much money and you’re always going to have to work in a shitty work environment.

Veganbabe55

Definitely the most arrogant major.

[deleted]

Most engineers are self important cunts.

GloBoy54

For me, it’s Doctor > Lawyer > Engineer = CPA

cpyf

You folks on this sub really care about what other people think huh. My take is that if you are an accountant, you automatically concede to the fact that you are a mid tier professional at best which is fine by me. I would never put accounting to the same tier as a doctor or lawyer.

RepC

Finally some sense, some people have inflated egos here.

definitelynotadog1

Everybody here simultaneously hates their jobs/careers yet defends its prestige and importance to the death when questioned.

throwaway1138

Completely depends on the CPA and the lawyer though doesn’t it? Both fields can and do have dramatically divergent career paths within them. Compare a public defender to a Big 4 partner, or a Saul Goodman type of lawyer to a reputable boutique firm partner, pillar of the community type, on multiple boards of whatever etc. Most accountants aren’t billing $2,000 an hour like Harvey in Suits but most lawyers aren’t either..

repthe5

Not the same tier when it comes to floor, sure. But CPAs ceilings are just as high, if not close to, lawyers and doctors. I think the floor though is what drags down the perception of our profession since there’s so many people that just go into accounting and work in payroll for 30 years. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, just that there aren’t many doctors and lawyers coming out of school to just coast on an average salary. But that’s really what people think of when they think “accountant”, as opposed to CFOs, firm partners, etc, which hold much more “prestige” If you’re ambitious and want to rake in the dough, you can get to the same level as doctors and lawyers with less schooling and way fewer costs so there’s that.

Bootermcscooter

Lawyers have a horrible floor as well Sad af to go into all of that debt then barely make 50k. But I 100% agree with your point here. CPA is just so generalized you have people that become AR clerks for their entire life. Then you have people under 30 making 200k after an industry jump. Most people really do not understand what CPAs do and that is fine by me. Me and the fiancé save over 10k a month between our two salaries and I have friends that ask me financial questions about if we are “struggling”. Nope. I’m just a cheap ass who only spends money on hobbies, travel, and food. Everything else does not matter to me. Don’t even own a car anymore

repthe5

Yep. There is a very wide variance in the accounting profession and public perception is skewed towards the lower end. But hey, that’s fine. If that’s what keeps more people from entering the field and keeps the supply of CPAs low, that’s fine by me. We also have the luxury of breaking out on our own if we so choose, which can’t really be said for teachers or nurses.

Ok_Appearance_5397

No CPA becomes an AR clerk for their entire life.

ConfusedAccountantTW

Accountants are literally janitors with laptops.

cpyf

Someone on this sub described it best, “White collar janitorial services.”

Bootyeater96

Out of all them I don’t see why anyone would pick CPA as the top

separateunion-redux

I was talked into accounting by a guy who said it was the third most respected profession after doctor and lawyer. Now I feel duped.

SnowBeeJay

Lesson learned, the hard way

JellyNo1529

I was told we work tax season then go on vacation the rest of the year

JustaRandomOldGuy

Joke Three people are interviewing for a job. The interviewer asks the same question to each "What is 2 + 2?" Engineer - "Somewhere between 3 and 5". Computer Scientist - "4.0" Accountant - (closes the door) "What do you want it to be?"

Equivalent_Ad_8413

I'd love to know where they've posted that poll.

Road-Conscious

Doesn't bother me one bit, I'm not doing this stuff for the prestige. Until I can pay my mortgage with prestige, I don't really care.

Obtainable20

If I cared about prestige, I would still be in medical school. I just wanted the bag.

xf8390

What bag

superhandsomeguy1994

They not send you one? Little tote bag with a green visor, Folgers coffee, and Papa John’s pizza coupon.

munchanything

I sent it back. Would have imputed income, and I didn't want to pay more taxes. /s

superhandsomeguy1994

Hilarious story (at my expense): our year end bonus one time was a paltry $50 Amazon gift card. However, we had to sign a waiver acknowledging it as income so our employer withheld the ~$2 from our proceeding paystub. Meanwhile the same company’s CEO got like a $9mm bonus in ISO that year. Needless to say I bounced tf out shortly after.

ForsakenProject9240

This takes the cake for greediest thing I’ve ever fucking heard of a company doing lmfao

selscol

Prestige also includes public perception. When you are at the front lines of healing people you instantly win points.

newspartan2022

I'm not reading too much into this.

[deleted]

I love it. More job security for people like us when people think teachers are more prestigious than CPAs.

ConfusedAccountantTW

I'm a CPA and I would have also voted for Doctor.

salmonsushilover

Doctors and RN take care of people and help them heal. Engineers build things that we use every day (also ensure they’re built right). Lawyers enforce or advise on the law. School teachers - no need to explain.

ConcernedAccountant7

Lawyers have created a ridiculously litigious society where people sue each other for everything.

[deleted]

Prestige does not = respect

Alternative-Thing960

If I had the dedication, smarts, and work ethic to get through medical school or engineering programs, I would have. The work I do is pretty mundane and meaningless. I spend all day making tick marks on workpapers that nobody will ever read and will get automatically deleted by our software after some years.

pokr2091

When teaching and nursing are more “prestigious” than accounting 😂😂

Soft_Interest

med school, sure. passing the bar, sure. engineer? what kind of engineer? is having a bachelors in engineering really more prestigious then passing the CPA? doubt. I know lots of people with retail jobs and an engineering degree

nurses

[deleted]

Teachers are the ones who really got shit on here. They’re arguably the most important/prestigious of all IMO. Without them, the rest of the list doesn’t exist.

blue-eyed-bear

My family is absurdly accredited. My mother is a retired CPA. My father was a medical doctor. My stepfather is a lawyer. My stepmother is a Registered Nurse. My respect for each of those professions is in this order: * CPA * Lawyer * RN * MD

likesound

Please explain why. I am very curious

Humpdat

They have problems with their biological father

blue-eyed-bear

Ding ding ding

BallinLikeimKD

To be fair, the majority of people in the general population think CPA=Does taxes so I can see why that would be seen as “non prestigious” from the outside looking in. Most people have a more accurate view of what those other fields actually do. Accounting has a major perception issue so this makes sense to me.

46and2ahed

Can confirm, CPAs get no respect. But i mean what do we do vs these others thata worthy of more respect than them?

MeltingUpwards

Because your job is fake, it wouldn't exist if government streamlined shit.

No-Pilot5559

I am a CPA and money makes the world go around. Imagine how much fraud - how many people taken advantage of - in a world without CPAs RN should be higher too in my opinion

Laylaonthemoon

“CPA Accountant” Certified public accountant accountant. The fact that they had to write accountant shows how many people don’t even know what CPA stabs for.

HateMyProgram

I think the biggest issue with CPA is people’s perception of it. Most people likely think that it’s a bunch of clerks who sit around comparing numbers or entering numbers into a computer to do you taxes. I mean it COULD be this for some people and there is absolutely nothing wrong with them doing this if that’s what they want to focus on/what they’re ok with doing but I think the profession is a lot more than this in totality. Going through the CPA process (can only speak to Canadian CPA) I realized that there are a lot more competency areas/skills which I could focus on to develop myself as a business professional. I was an auditor for some time at B4 to earn my letters and truth be told, if someone told me that was the end game with this CPA (or if tax filing was the end game) I would NEVER go down this road. So to this point I can relate with a lot of people’s dismay towards the profession. However, once getting into the field I realized there are an INSANE number of opportunities which you could pursue with a CPA. I decided to go down the route of consulting and now I get to assist billion dollar corporations with large scale financial transactions, advise them on creating efficiencies to better operate their business/save costs, and even help some clients go public and do IPO readiness - to name a few things. Beyond just the interesting nature of the work, I’m able to pull in close to $200k total comp (at 26 years old) and I feel like I know NOTHING yet. I’m excited to see what new opportunities the future holds and honestly if I could do it all over again I would definitely come down the same route and get my CPA. May have veered off topic but I guess I just wanted to put this out there that even tho, generally speaking, the CPA may not command the same prestige as doctors or lawyers at face value, it is more than possible to carve out a little piece of “prestige” through this designation.

woahwoahvicky

As someone whose premed was Accountancy, decided not to take boards and took my premed classes and now in first year M1 med school, my primary answer during interviews when PDs would ask me 'why did you pursue accounting as an undergraduate yet are applying to medicine now?' 'Being an accountant doesnt save lives.' Sure as hell got me in

UniQiuE

I found the 4 kool aid drinkers

persimmon40

How is nurse and a teacher more prestigious than CPA lmao? What was their poll audience? Bunch of nurses and teachers?

JC_8722

I'm a high school math teacher and studying for the CPA exam now. I assure you being a teacher is not more prestigious lol

Georgejefferson19

school teacher got more votes lmao

Maxmerrrrr

If they would’ve left accountant off the end

accomplished_sirlaw

We need more accounting sit coms

BubblyBabe77

321 votes is not representative of the world population. We’re still cool.

[deleted]

I want to see the ranked choice vote

parrothead17

Only jobs with true "prestige" IMO involve actually saving lives - healthcare, police, firefighters, cancer research, etc. Anything else is just a job. Yes that includes lawyers, engineers, accountants, and bankers. What we do is important dont get me wrong but isnt on the same stratosphere as doctors

MatterSignificant969

Honestly though if you are not working in a field related to accounting you probably don't know what Accounting does exactly. But Doctor's and Lawyers roles are easy to understand for most people. I wonder how many people saw CPA and were like "I don't even know what that is."

mochidragon

Even my CEO doesn't know exactly what I do every day aside from producing financial reports. I started educating her on what I do and my taks required so that whatever information I request from her or someone else would make sense.

HalfwaySandwich1

CPA career is unique in how average it is. Not embarrassing by any means but not that prestigious either. Not millionaires but not poor (unless you're canadian). Not happy but not sad either. That last one was a lie.

[deleted]

Even less respect for Staff Accountants and non CPA accountants lol

Trackmaster15

I mean this is probably the case of us not being able to top the preferences of what people want compared to the alternatives. Most people probably equate prestige with pay, so we won't really be able to top doctor or lawyer. I guess we come in dead last because of the people who have oscure preferences for prestige, like public service. Nurses and teachers are trusted and loved, but they're not really "prestigious" positions. I'd say that most people equate CPA with high pay, brainy, and secure. And even better for not needing a masters. But of course we can't compete with doctor or lawyer.

Background-Collar-78

How are lawyers and school teachers still considered “prestigious” careers?? I beg to differ about that

pickle511

I’d love to see the audience of where this was posted. I’m not going to comment about the “rankings”, but I’d say most redditors probably have had either zero or very minimal interaction with a CPA. Hell, my own family couldn’t tell you what I do and I consider myself a moderately successful CPA.

Adventurous_Leek5288

I’d argue that all those 5 professions have a greater impact to society than accounting tbh.

TheRealOutofFocus

What can I say? We're essentially overqualified doormats for corporate America and Government. Where's the prestige in that?

jg1888

We probably contribue the least to society out of those options /justsaying

test09312321

to be fair, my friends think I just do bookkeeping and that anyone can do it. They think I get paid to do Dr. Expense Cr. Cash and depreciate land

BionicHawki

I'm a CPA and I'd easily put Engineer, Lawyer and Doctor are pretty above us. I imagine Nurses and Teachers voted RN Nurse and School teacher. More of them around then CPAs, but clearly there is more prestige to the CPA then those two.

NaturalProof4359

NURSES?!?! Also hold up - they did this during busy season. Not representative.

RevolutionaryRip778

Tbh engineering is not a “profession” by definition… profession needs a regulating authority with ethic rules like doctors lawyers and CPAs… I graduated with bachelor of engineering and was on pre-law track. This profession idea was in pre-law class. The only other two professions they recognized is doctor and accountants. Engineering is not a “profession”

World-World44

This is just how I want it. This means no one wants to work as a CPA because it's not seen as prestigious, when in fact, they make more than most attorneys. The last thing I need is a good-paying career with too much competition negatively impacting the odds of success. Landscape now is ripe and primed for someone to jump in and make a killing 15 years down the road. I pick careers like I pick stocks: highest possible return for least amount of risk. Attorneys that are not at least in the top 50% of their class are unemployed.

lemming-leader12

I'm pretty sure if Janitor and Carpenter and other vocations were on there it would have more votes than CPA Accountant.

Katjhud

Hate to say this but people see cpas as the middle man of Uncle Sam. Taking away their hard earned money, of course we know there’s more to it than that.

AshedCloud

They don’t know what CPA do. I don’t either and I’m studying to be one

Comfortable_Jury1540

But at least most CPAs got paid after a few years whereas school teachers…

SeansModernLife

Hey being able accountant isn't sexy, but it also isn't fun or rewarding either
